Item type:Item, A fast iterative solver for the variable coefficient diffusion equation on a disk(2005-09-01) ;Lai, MC ;Tseng, YH ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsWe present an efficient iterative method for solving the variable coefficient diffusion equation on a unit disk. The equation is written in polar coordinates and is discretized by the standard centered difference approximation under the grid arrangement by shifting half radial mesh away from the origin so that the coordinate singularity can be handled naturally without pole conditions. The resultant matrix is symmetric positive definite so the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method can be applied. Different preconditioners have been tested for comparison, in particular, a fast direct solver derived from the equation and the semi-coarsening multigrid are shown to be almost scalable with the problem size and outperform other preconditioners significantly. The present elliptic solver has been applied to study the vortex dynamics of the Ginzburg-Landau equation with a variable diffusion coefficient. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. Agile enterprise whereby an organization can change and adapt quickly to changing circumstances is increasingly viewed as a winning strategy. However, in embracing agile enterprise, there are important questions to be asked: what precisely is agility and how can it be measured? How can one assist in achieving and enhancing agility effectively? Answers to such questions are critical to the practitioners and to the theory of agile enterprise design. The foundation of agile enterprise lies in the integration of information system/technologies, people, business processes and facilities. Due to the ill-defined and vague indicators which exist within agility assessment, most measures are described Subjectively by linguistic terms which are characterized by ambiguity and multi-possibility, and the conventional assessment approaches cannot suitably nor effectively handle such measurement. However, fuzzy logic provides a useful tool for dealing with decisions in which the phenomena are imprecise and vague. Thus, the novelty in the paper is development of the absolute agility index, a unique and unprecedented attempt in agility measurement, using fuzzy logic to address the ambiguity in agility evaluation. Details of the approach and a framework of a fuzzy agility evaluation will be presented. An example is also used to illustrate the approach developed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. The resulting white light-emitting device reaches a maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.82% and a maximum brightness of 12 900 cd/m(2) at 12 V. The Commission Internationale d'Enclairage chromaticity coordinates of the device remain very close to that of pure white emission at a relatively broad bias range from 6 V (x=0.36, y=0.37) to 12 V (x=0.34, y=0.34). We have investigated this polymer's thermal properties, electronic properties (viz., absorption and photoluminescence), and electrochemical behavior. Photoluminescence studies indicate that color tuning can be achieved through efficient Forster energy transfer from the higher-energy polyfluorene backbone to the lower-energy pendant DPAS units. We have fabricated light-emitting diodes with the structure indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/ emitting layer/1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene (TPBI)/Mg:Ag. The devices, based on blends of PF-DPAS in polyfluorene-triphenylamine-oxadiazole (PF-TPA-OXD), exhibit significant improvements in device performance relative to that of the pure PF-TPA-OXD device; we attributed this improvement to both a red-shift of the electroluminescence (EL) spectra and an enhancement in quantum efficiency. At a blend ratio of 1:20, the EL spectrum is voltage-independent and stable, and exhibits the characteristic emission of a DPAS moiety: a peak at 461 nm and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.1.5, 0.18). The maximum external quantum efficiency is 2.08 % (2.87 cd A(-1)) at a bias of 9 V (86.1 mA cm(-2)) with a brightness of 2467 cd m(-2); the maximum brightness (6916 cd m-2) occurred at an applied voltage of 13 V and a current density of 361 mA cm(-2).Item type:Item, Highly efficient red electrophosphorescent devices based on an iridium complex with trifluoromethyl-substituted pyrimidine ligand(2004-08-30) ;Niu, YH ;Chen, BQ ;Liu, S ;Yip, HBardecker, JHighly efficient red-emitting electrophosphorescent devices were fabricated by doping an iridium (Ir) complex containing trifluoromethyl (CF3)-substituted pyrimidine ligand into a conjugated bipolar polyfluorene with triphenylamine and oxadiazole as side chains. The device efficiency can be enhanced through effective exciton confinement using a layer of 1,3,5-tris(N- phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene on the cathode side and a layer of in situ polymerized tetraphenyldiamine-perfluorocyclobutane on the anode side. For a blend with 5 wt % of the Ir complex, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 7.9 photon/electron % and a maximum brightness of 15800 cd/m(2) are reached with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of x=0.65 and y=0.34. The host polymers, which contain both hole- and electron-transporting or merely electron-tran sporting side chains, are capable of facilitating charge injection and transport. After determining the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of these materials, we were able to match the dopant with its most suitable host to achieve the direct formation and confinement of an exciton at the dopant. This configuration also leads to a reduction in the electrical excitation of the host polymer, which in turn decreases the degree of exciton loss arising from nonradiative decay of the host triplet. Using this approach, we were able to realize the production of high-performance red-electrophosphorescent devices. For Os(fppz)-doped devices, we obtain a balanced charge recombination in conjunction with higher current and luminance when using PF-TPA-OXD as the host matrix; this device reached a maximum external quantum efficiency of 8.37% with a peak brightness of 16 720 cd/m(2). The absence of charge-transporting pendant units, i.e., the device fabricated from poly [9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl] (POF), led, however, to relatively poor electroluminescence characteristics (5.81% and 2144 cd/m(2)).Item type:Item, Interfered-character recognition by removing interfering-lines and adjusting feature weights(1998) ;Tseng, YH ;Lee, HJ ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceCharacters sometimes overlap with non-textual lines in form documents and these interfered-characters would generally be recognized with poor accuracy. In this paper we propose a two-step interfering-line removing method. Positions and orientations of interfering-lines are first detected by the Hough transform. Interfering-line widths are then determined from projection histograms. An ambiguous area is defined to bound an interfering-line. Black runs in the ambiguous are classified into four types and grouped into run-groups. The directions of hidden character strokes in each run-groups are predicted. Black pixels located in these hidden strokes are regarded as character pixels and the other black pixels are considered as interfering pixels, which will be removed then. Most OCR engines are trained by non-interfered sample characters. In order to recognize interfered-characters, we adjust the feature values by assigning a stability value to each of sub-regions. In our collected 1820 interfered handwritten Chinese characters, the recognition accuracy was 24.02% for interfered-characters and 89.91% for characters after removing interfering-lines.Item type:Item, Poly(p-phenylenevinylene) presenting pendent pentaphenylene dendron groups for light-emitting diodes(2005-11-01) ;Tseng, YH ;Wu, FI ;Shih, PI ;Shu, CF應用化學系We have synthesized, using the Gilch method, a novel poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative (PPV-PP) containing two pendent pentaphenylene dendritic wedges, and have characterized its structure and properties. The incorporated side chain pentaphenylene dendrons serve as solubilizing groups, prevent pi-stacking interactions from occurring between the polymer main chains, and suppress the formation of excimers in the solid state. Photoluminescence studies indicate that efficient intramolecular energy transfer occurred from the photoexcited pentaphenylene groups to the poly(p-phenylenevinylene) backbone. The polymer film exhibits a maximum emission at 510 nm and had a photoluminescence efficiency of 46%, which is similar to that measured in dilute solution. The photoluminescence spectra remained almost unchanged after thermal annealing at 150 degrees]C for 20 h, and displayed inhibited excimer formation. Polymer light-emitting diodes that we fabricated in the configuration ITO/PEDOT/PPV-PP/Mg:Ag/Ag exhibited a maximum emission peak at 513 nm, corresponding to the green region [x = 0.30 and y = 0.62 in the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates]. The maximum brightness and maximum luminance efficiency were 1562 cd/m(2) and 1.93 cd/A, respectively. Possible non-linear segmentation paths are initially located using a probabilistic Viterbi algorithm. Candidate segmentation paths are determined by verifying overlapping paths, between-character gaps, and adjacent-path distances. A segmentation graph is then constructed using candidate paths to represent nodes and two nodes with appropriate distances are connected by an are. The cost in each are is a function of character recognition distances, squareness of characters and internal gaps in characters. After the shortest path is detected from the segmentation graph, the nodes in the path represent optimal segmentation paths. In addition, 125 text-line images are collected from seven form documents. Cumulatively, these text-lines contain 1132 handwritten Chinese characters. The average segmentation rate in our experiments is 95.58%. Moreover, the probabilistic Viterbi algorithm is modified slightly to extract text-lines from document pages by obtaining non-linear paths while gaps between text-lines are not obvious. This algorithm can also be modified to segment characters from printed text-line images by adjusting parameters used to represent costs of arcs in the segmentation graph. The Y2O2S:Eu phosphor powders were prepared with a flux fusion method and electrophoretically deposited on an ITO-coated glass substrate to form a thin layer. Both cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence emission spectra of Y2O2S:Eu were measured. The highly intense emission lines at 616 and 626 nm are attributed to the transition from D-5(0) to F-7(2) levels. The color of Y2O2S:Eu phosphor varies from orange to red as the Eu concentration increases from Eu/ Y = 0.025 (molar ratio) to 0.06. The luminescence decay times are shorter than 1.1 ms for Eu concentrations ranging from 0.025 to 0.06 (Eu/ Y molar ratio). The luminescent color becomes redder but less bright as the Eu concentration is increased. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. Our character recognition system, including the candidate-cluster selection and modified branch-and-bound detail-matching modules, is implemented using two statistical features: crossing-counts and contour-direction counts. In the training stage, we divide characters into different clusters by using reference characters. To have a very high recognition rate, the candidate-cluster selection module selects the top 60 clusters with minimal distances from among 300 predefined clusters. To further speed-up the recognition speed, we use a modified branch-and-bound algorithm in the detail-matching module. In the automatic document reading system, characters and punctuation marks are first extracted from printed document images and sorted according to their positions and the document orientation. The system then recognizes all printed Chinese characters between pairs of punctuation marks. The results are then spoken aloud by a speech-synthesis system. The character recognition system and the text-to-speech synthesis system are integrated in the Windows-based document reading system, which provides a user-friendly environment. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the dibromo monomer revealed that the spiro-fused fluorene and xanthene moieties lie perpendicular to one another. As a consequence of the incorporation of the spiro pendant group, PSFX possesses a high glass transition temperature and good thermal stability while displaying its stable blue emission in the solid state. A light-emitting diode device prepared using PSFX as the emitting layer exhibits an efficient, stable blue emission; it has a turn-on voltage of 6 V and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.74% ph/el. Even when the brightness was increased up to 10(3) cd/m(2) (ca. 11 V), the CIE color coordinates of the resulting EL spectrum remained in the deep-blue region (0.15, 0.07) and the device's efficiency was 1.33% ph/el.Item type:Item, Typeface identification for printed Chinese characters(1998-03-01) ;Tseng, YH ;Kuo, CC ;Lee, HJ ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we propose a methodology for identifying typefaces of printed Chinese characters in documents. Three kinds of features, stroke width means, stroke width variations, and aspect ratio, are first used to classify character typefaces as: Black, Li, Kai-Round, or Ming-Song. Each of the last two groups contains two typefaces. Vertical/horizontal stroke width ratios are used to distinguish between the Ming and Song typefaces and accumulative pixel ratio to distinguish between the Kai and Round typefaces. Six different typeface feature distributions measured from 5401 printed Chinese characters are considered, and a trapezoid-shaped membership function is constructed for each distribution. Based on these membership functions, we determine what typeface each input character belongs to using a two-level decision tree. To increase the identification rate, the typeface of a certain character is adjusted according to the typeface identification results of the front and the next characters. In the character recognition system, we use two statistical features: crossing counts and contour directional counts. We achieved an 89.87% typeface identification rate in our experiments, and a 95.60% character recognition rate.Item type:Item, Using a fuzzy piecewise regression analysis to predict the nonlinear time-series of turbulent flows with automatic change-point detection(2001) ;Tseng, YH ;Durbin, P ;Tzeng, GH ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyResearch has already shown that turbulent flow consists of some coherent time- and space-organized vortical structures. Some dynamic systems and experimental models are employed to understand the turbulent generation mechanism. However, these approaches still cannot provide a good nonlinear analysis of turbulent time-series. In the real turbulent flow, very complicated nonlinear behaviors, which are affected by many vague factors are present. Based on the nonlinear behavior and the results of from this traditional research, we introduce multivariate statistical analysis of an experimental study to explain practical phenomenon. In this paper, a new approach of fuzzy piecewise regression analysis with automatic change-point detection is proposed to predict the nonlinear time-series of turbulent flows. In order to show the practicality and usefulness of this model, we present an example of predicting the near-wall turbulence time-series as a verifiable model. The results of practical applications show that the proposed method is appropriate and appears to be useful in nonlinear analysis and in fuzzy environments to predict the turbulence time-series.
