Item type:Item, An immersed boundary method for interfacial flows with insoluble surfactant(2008-07-20) ;Lai, Ming-Chih ;Tseng, Yu-Hau ;Huang, Huaxiong ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsIn this paper, an immersed boundary method is proposed for the simulation of two-dimensional fluid interfaces with insoluble surfactant. The governing equations are written in a usual immersed boundary formulation where a mixture of Eulerian flow and Lagrangian interfacial variables are used and the linkage between these two set of variables is provided by the Dirac delta function. The immersed boundary force comes from the surface tension which is affected by the distribution of surfactant along the interface. By tracking the interface in a Lagrangian manner, a simplified surfactant transport equation is derived. The numerical method involves solving the Navier-Stokes equations on a staggered grid by a semi-implicit pressure increment projection method where the immersed interfacial forces are calculated at the beginning of each time step. Once the velocity value and interfacial configurations are obtained, surfactant concentration is updated using the transport equation. In this paper, a new symmetric discretization for the surfactant concentration equation is proposed that ensures the surfactant mass conservation numerically. The effect of surfactant on drop deformation in a shear flow is investigated in detail. (c) 2008 Elsevier Inc. The viscoelasticity effect of extra stress is well incorporated into the immersed boundary formulation using the indicator function. Our numerical methodology is first validated in comparison with theoretical results in purely Newtonian fluid, and then a series of numerical experiments is conducted to study the effects of different dimensionless parameters on the vesicle motions. Although the tank-treading (TT) motion of Newtonian vesicle in Oldroyd-B fluid under shear flow can be observed just like in Newtonian fluid, it is surprising to find that the stationary inclination angle can be negative without the transition to tumbling (TB) motion. Moreover, the inertia effect plays a significant role that is able to turn the vesicle back to positive inclination angle through TT-TB-TT transition as the Reynolds number increases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first numerical work for the detailed investigations of Newtonian vesicle dynamics suspended in viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluid. We believe that our numerical results can be used to motivate further studies in theory and experiments for such coupling vesicle problems. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. The model is derived using an energy variation approach that accounts for different lipid surface phases, the excess energy (line energy) associated with surface phase domain boundaries, bending energy, spontaneous curvature, local inextensibility and fluid flow via the Stokes equations. The equations are high-order (fourth order) nonlinear and nonlocal due to incompressibility of the fluid and the local inextensibility of the vesicle membrane. To solve the equations numerically, we develop a nonstiff, pseudo-spectral boundary integral method that relies on an analysis of the equations at small scales. The algorithm is closely related to that developed very recently by Veerapaneni et al. [81] for homogeneous vesicles although we use a different and more efficient time stepping algorithm and a reformulation of the inextensibility equation. We present simulations of multicomponent vesicles in an initially quiescent fluid and investigate the effect of varying the average surface concentration of an initially unstable mixture of lipid phases. The phases then redistribute and alter the morphology of the vesicle and its dynamics. When an applied shear is introduced, an initially elliptical vesicle tank-treads and attains a steady shape and surface phase distribution. A sufficiently elongated vesicle tumbles and the presence of different surface phases with different bending stiffnesses and spontaneous curvatures yields a complex evolution of the vesicle morphology as the vesicle bends in regions where the bending stiffness and spontaneous curvature are small. The governing equations are the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the usual mixture of Eulerian fluid variables and Lagrangian interfacial markers. The immersed boundary force has two components: one from the nonhomogeneous surface tension determined by the distribution of surfactant along the fluid interface, and the other from unbalanced Young's force at the moving contact lines. An artificial tangential velocity has been added to the Lagrangian markers to ensure that the markers are uniformly distributed at all times. The corresponding modified surfactant equation is solved in a way such that the total surfactant mass is conserved. Numerical experiments including convergence analysis are carefully conducted. The effect of the surfactant on the motion of hydrophilic and hydrophobic drops are investigated in detail.Item type:Item, Numerical Simulation of Moving Contact Lines with Surfactant by Immersed Boundary Method(2010-10-01) ;Lai, Ming-Chih ;Tseng, Yu-Hau ;Huang, Huaxiong ;數學建模與科學計算所(含中心)Graduate Program of Mathematical Modeling and Scientific Computing, Department of Applied MathematicsIn this paper, we present an immersed boundary method for simulating moving contact lines with surfactant.
