Item type:Item, Ag Doping of Organometal Lead Halide Perovskites: Morphology Modification and p-Type Character(2017-02-23) ;Shahbazi, Saeed ;Tsai, Cheng-Min ;Narra, Sudhakar ;Wang, Chi-YungShiu, Hau-ShiangWe report a simple synthetic approach to grow uniform CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite (PSK) layers free of pinholes via ciE varied portions of silver iodide (AgI) added to the precursor solution. XRD/EDS elemental mapping experiments demonstrated nearly uniform Ag distribution inside the perovskite film. When the 1% AgI- assisted perovskite films were fabricated into a p-i-n planar device, the a) photovoltaic performance was enhanced by similar to 30% (PCE increased from 9.5% to 12.0%) relative to the standard cell without added AgI. . Measurement of electronic properties using a hall setup indicated that perovskite films show p-type character after Ag doping, whereas the film is n-type without Ag. Transients of photoluminescence of perovskite films with and without AgI additive deposited on glass, p-type (PEDOT:PSS), and n-type (TiO2) contact layers were recorded with a time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) technique. The TCSPC results indicate that addition of AgI inside perovskite in contact with PEDOT:PSS accelerated the hole-extraction motion whereas that in contact with TiO2 led to a decelerated electron extraction, in agreement with the trend observed from the photovoltaic results. The silver cationic dopant inside the perovskite films had hence an effect of controlling the morphology to improve photovoltaic performance for devices with p-i-n configuration.Item type:Item, Anisotropic Electric Field Effect on the Photoluminescence of CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Sandwiched between Conducting and Insulating Films(2017-10-19) ;Awasthi, Kamlesh ;Wang, Chi-Yung ;Fathi, Amir ;Narra, SudhakarDiau, Eric Wei-GuangPhotoluminescence (PL) of a nanocrystalline film of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI(3)) sandwiched between an electrode of a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) layer and an insulating film of poly(methyl methacrylate) is found to increase and decrease significantly with the application of an external electric field (F-ext), depending on the direction of the applied field, based on the measurements of electrophotoluminescence (E-PL) spectra, i.e., field-induced change in PL spectra. The field-induced change in PL intensity is confirmed to originate from the field-induced change in the number of free carriers which induce radiative recombination, based on temporally resolved E-PL measurements. We propose that an internal field (F-int) exists even without application of F-ext. The anisotropic behavior of the effect of F-ext on PL is interpreted in terms of a synergy effect of F-int and F-ext; both fields are additive with the applied field direction from Ag to FTO electrode (positive direction) or subtractive with the opposite applied field direction (negative direction), where FTO is the positive electrode, resulting in an increased or decreased total electric field as well as quenching or enhancement of PL, respectively. The PL lifetime in the nanosecond region increased and decreased with an application of an electric field in the positive and negative directions, respectively, which is attributed to a field-induced change in the concentration of free carriers.Item type:Item, Anomalous Charge-Extraction Behavior for Graphene-Oxide (GO) and Reduced Graphene-Oxide (rGO) Films as Efficient p-Contact Layers for High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells(2018-01-25) ;Jokar, Efat ;Huang, Zhong Yi ;Narra, Sudhakar ;Wang, Chi-YungKattoor, VidyaReduced graphene oxides (rGO) are synthesized via reduction of GO with reducing agents as a hole-extraction layer for high-performance inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells. The best efficiencies of power conversion (PCE) of these rGO cells exceed 16%, much greater than those made of GO and poly(3,4-ethenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) films. A flexible rGO device shows PCE 13.8% and maintains 70% of its initial performance over 150 bending cycles. It is found that the hole-extraction period is much smaller for the GO/methylammonium lead-iodide perovskite (PSK) film than for the other rGO/PSK films, which contradicts their device performances. Photoluminescence and transient photoelectric decays are measured and control experiments are performed to prove that the reduction of the oxygen-containing groups in GO significantly decreases the ability of hole extraction from PSK to rGO and also retards the charge recombination at the rGO/PSK interface. When the hole injection from PSK to GO occurs rapidly, hole propagation from GO to the indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) substrate becomes a bottleneck to overcome, which leads to a rapid charge recombination that decreases the performance of the GO device relative to the rGO device.Item type:Item, Electroabsorption Studies of Multicolored Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystalline Solid Films(2018-06-01) ;Awasthi, Kamlesh ;Du, Kai-Bo ;Wang, Chi-Yung ;Tsai, Chao-LinHamada, MorihikoElectroabsorption (E-A) spectra of lead halide perovskites, that is, CH3NH3PbI3-xBrx (x = 0-3), which show large spectral shift depending on the ratio between iodine and bromide, have been measured. By analyzing E-A spectra with the S. integral method, spectral shape of the absorption spectra for the first exciton band and binding energy of exciton have been determined. Magnitudes of the change in electric dipole moment and molecular polarizability following excitation into the exciton state have been also evaluated in these perovskites. The binding energy of electron and hole in exciton of these materials as well as the magnitude of change in electric dipole moment following exciton absorption is roughly the same, suggesting that the difference of the photoenergy conversion in photovoltaic cells using these materials comes from the difference in light harvesting effect and difference in carrier mobility, not from the difference in carrier generation efficiency. The frequency-dependent third-order nonlinear susceptibility chi((3)) has also been calculated, based on the E-A spectra.Item type:Item, Femtosecond Excitonic Relaxation Dynamics of Perovskite on Mesoporous Films of Al2O3 and NiO Nanoparticles(2014-08-25) ;Hsu, Hung-Yu ;Wang, Chi-Yung ;Fathi, Amir ;Shiu, Jia-WeiChung, Chih-ChunThe excitonic relaxation dynamics of perovskite adsorbed on mesoporous thin films of Al2O3 and NiO upon excitation at 450 nm were investigated with femtosecond optical gating of photoluminescence (PL) via up-conversion. The temporal profiles of emission observed in spectral region 670-810 nm were described satisfactorily with a composite consecutive kinetic model and three transient components representing one hot and two cold excitonic relaxations. All observed relaxation dynamics depend on the emission wavelength, showing a systematic time-amplitude correlation for all three components. When the NiO film was employed, we observed an extent of relaxation proceeding through the non-emissive surface state larger than through the direct electronic relaxation channel, which quenches the PL intensity more effectively than on the Al2O3 film. We conclude that perovskite is an effective hole carrier in a p-type electrode for NiO-based perovskite solar cells showing great performance.Item type:Item, Formation of Stable Tin Perovskites Co-crystallized with Three Halides for Carbon-Based Mesoscopic Lead-Free Perovskite Solar Cells(2017-10-23) ;Tsai, Cheng-Min ;Mohanta, Nayantara ;Wang, Chi-Yung ;Lin, Yu-PeiYang, Yaw-WenWe synthesized and characterized methylammonium (MA) mixed tri-halide tin perovskites (MASnIBr(2-x)Cl(x)) for carbon-based mesoscopic solar cells free of lead and holetransporting layers. Varied SnCl2/SnBr2 ratios yielded tin perovskites with three halides (I, Br, and Cl) co-crystallized inside the tin-perovskite. When the SnCl2 proportion was >= 50% (x >= 1), phase separation occurred to give MAS-nI(3-y)Br(y) and MASnCl(3-z)Br(z) in the stoichiometric proportions of their precursors, confirmed by XRD. A device with MASnIBr(1.8)Cl(0.2) (SnCl2= 10%) showed the best photovoltaic performance: J(SC)= 14.0 mAcm(-2), V-OC= 380 mV, FF= 0.573, and PCE= 3.1%, and long-term stability. Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) show superior charge recombination and dielectric relaxation properties for the MASnIBr(1.8)Cl(0.2) cell. Transient PL decays showed the intrinsic problem of tinbased perovskites with average lifetimes less than 100 ps.Item type:Item, Functionalization of Graphene Oxide Films with Au and MoOx Nanoparticles as Efficient p-Contact Electrodes for Inverted Planar Perovskite Solar Cells(2018-09-12) ;Bhosale, Sumit S. ;Jokar, Efat ;Fathi, Amir ;Tsai, Cheng-MinWang, Chi-YungA graphene oxide (GO) film is functionalized with metal (Au) and metal-oxide (MoOx) nanoparticles (NPs) as a hole-extraction layer for high-performance inverted planar-heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs). These NPs can increase the work function of GO, which is confirmed with X-ray photoelectron spectra, Kelvin probe force microscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectra measurements. The down-shifts of work functions lead to a decreased level of potential energy and hence increased V-oc of the PSC devices. Although the GO-AuNP film shows rapid hole extraction and increased V-oc, a J(sc) improvement is not observed because of localization of the extracted holes inside the AuNP that leads to rapid charge recombination, which is confirmed with transient photoelectric measurements. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the GO-AuNP device attains 14.6%, which is comparable with that of the GO-based device (14.4%). In contrast, the rapid hole extraction from perovskite to the GO-MoOx layer does not cause trapping of holes and delocalization of holes in the GO film accelerates rapid charge transfer to the indium tin oxide substrate; charge recombination in the perovskite/GO-MoOx interface is hence significantly retarded. The GO-MoOx device consequently shows significantly enhanced V-oc and J(sc), for which its device performance attains PCE of 16.7% with great reproducibility and enduring stability.
