Item type:Item, Compact optical curvature sensor with a flexible microdisk laser on a polymer substrate(2009-09-15) ;Shih, M. H. ;Hsu, K. S. ;Kunag, Wan ;Yang, Y. C.Wang, Y. C.We demonstrate a chip-scale compact optical curvature sensor. It consists of a low threshold InGaAsP microdisk laser on a flexible polydimethylsiloxane polymer substrate. The curvature dependence of lasing wavelength was characterized by bending the cavity at different bending radii. The measurements showed that the lasing wavelength decreases monotonously with an increasing bending curvature. A good agreement between experiment and three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation was also obtained. The sensitivity of the compact device to the bending curvature is -23.7 nm/mm from the experiment. F.This paper describes an embedded workflow framework (EMWF) that enables flexible personal and home automation and assistive devices and service and social robots (collectively referred to as SISARL) to be built on workflow architecture. The process definition language supported by EMWF is called SISARL-XPDL. It consists of a subset of the WfMC standard XML Process Definition Language (XPDL) 2.0, together with elements that implement common mechanisms for robot behavior coordination. EMWF provides workflow engines for Linux and Windows CE platforms. The engines are written in C in order to keep their memory footprint and runtime overhead small. Performance data show that the overheads introduced by the engine and workflow data are tolerable for most SISARL devices.Item type:Item, Flexible compact microdisk lasers on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate(2009-01-19) ;Shih, M. H. ;Hsu, S. ;Wang, Y. C. ;Yang, Y. C.Tsai, S. K.Compact microdisk cavities were fabricated on a polydimethylsiloxane substrate. The lasing of the flexible compact cavity was achieved with a low threshold power. The whispering-gallery mode of the microdisk was also characterized with three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation. The curvature dependence in output power and threshold was also demonstrated by bending the microdisk cavity. Y. ;Chang, C. C.Dong, C. L.Rubidium tungsten bronzes (RbxWO3) have recently attracted much attention due to their intriguing phenomena, such as complex structural phase transitions, strong electron-phonon coupling, and superconducting properties. This study investigates the local atomic and electronic structures of RbxWO3 (0.17 <= x <= 0.33). X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed a hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB) phase. X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) at the W L-3-edge and Rb K-edge of RbxWO3 were carried out. The XAS analysis indicated a local distorted WO6 octahedron which leads to a splitting of e(g) and t(2g) energy states in the tungsten 5d orbital and this splitting of energy levels exhibited an asymmetrical behavior at x = 0.23 and 0.27. Overall analysis revealed a distortion of local atomic structure of the WO6 octahedra by rubidium doping, leading to the modification of the electronic structures of e(g) and t(2g) states in the tungsten 5d orbital, thereby accounting for the property changes in CDW formation and superconducting transition temperature of these materials.
