This study offers several implications and recommendations for further research.Item type:Item, A Fully Integrated 8-Channel Closed-Loop Neural-Prosthetic CMOS SoC for Real-Time Epileptic Seizure Control(2014-01-01) ;Chen, Wei-Ming ;Chiueh, Herming ;Chen, Tsan-Jieh ;Ho, Chia-LunJeng, ChiAn 8-channel closed-loop neural-prosthetic SoC is presented for real-time intracranial EEG (iEEG) acquisition, seizure detection, and electrical stimulation in order to suppress epileptic seizures. The SoC is composed of eight energy-efficient analog front-end amplifiers (AFEAs), a 10-b delta-modulated SAR ADC (DMSAR ADC), a configurable bio-signal processor (BSP), and an adaptive high-voltage-tolerant stimulator. A wire-less power-and-data transmission system is also embedded. By leveraging T-connected pseudo-resistors, the high-pass (low-pass) cutoff frequency of the AFEAs can be adjusted from 0.1 to 10 Hz (0.8 to 7 kHz). The noise-efficiency factor (NEF) of the AFEA is 1.77, and the DMSAR ADC achieves an ENOB of 9.57 bits. The BSP extracts the epileptic features from time-domain entropy and frequency spectrum for seizure detection. A constant 30-mu A stimulus current is delivered by closed-loop control. The acquired signals are transmitted with on-off keying (OOK) modulation at 4 Mbps over the MedRadio band for monitoring. A multi-LDO topology is adopted to mitigate the interferences across different power domains. The proposed SoC is fabricated in 0.18-mu m CMOS and occupies 13.47 mm(2). Verified on Long Evans rats, the proposed SoC dissipates 2.8 mW and achieves high detection accuracy 92% within 0.8 s.Item type:Item, A Fully Integrated 8-Channel Closed-Loop Neural-Prosthetic SoC for Real-Time Epileptic Seizure Control(2013-01-01) ;Chen, Wei-Ming ;Chiueh, Herming ;Chen, Tsan-Jieh ;Ho, Chia-LunJeng, ChiItem type:Item, A hierarchical approach for online temporal lobe seizure detection in long-term intracranial EEG recordings(2013-08-01) ;Liang, Sheng-Fu ;Chen, Yi-Chun ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Chen, Pin-TzuYang, Chia-HsiangObjective. Around 1% of the world's population is affected by epilepsy, and nearly 25% of patients cannot be treated effectively by available therapies. The presence of closed-loop seizure-triggered stimulation provides a promising solution for these patients. Realization of fast, accurate, and energy-efficient seizure detection is the key to such implants. In this study, we propose a two-stage on-line seizure detection algorithm with low-energy consumption for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Approach. Multi-channel signals are processed through independent component analysis and the most representative independent component (IC) is automatically selected to eliminate artifacts. Seizure-like intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) segments are fast detected in the first stage of the proposed method and these seizures are confirmed in the second stage. The conditional activation of the second-stage signal processing reduces the computational effort, and hence energy, since most of the non-seizure events are filtered out in the first stage. Main results. Long-term iEEG recordings of 11 patients who suffered from TLE were analyzed via leave-one-out cross validation. The proposed method has a detection accuracy of 95.24%, a false alarm rate of 0.09/h, and an average detection delay time of 9.2 s. For the six patients with mesial TLE, a detection accuracy of 100.0%, a false alarm rate of 0.06/h, and an average detection delay time of 4.8 s can be achieved. The hierarchical approach provides a 90% energy reduction, yielding effective and energy-efficient implementation for real-time epileptic seizure detection. Significance. An on-line seizure detection method that can be applied to monitor continuous iEEG signals of patients who suffered from TLE was developed. An IC selection strategy to automatically determine the most seizure-related IC for seizure detection was also proposed. The system has advantages of (1) high detection accuracy, (2) low false alarm, (3) short detection latency, and (4) energy-efficient design for hardware implementation.Item type:Item, An energy efficient real-time seizure detection method in rats with spontaneous temporal lobe epilepsy(2013) ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Liang, Sheng-Fu ;Shaw, Fu-Zen ;Huang, Yu-ShinChen, Yin-LinThe presence of an on-line seizure detection system could drive an antiepileptic stimulator in real time to suppress seizure generation and to enhance the patients' safety and quality of life. In this paper, the continuous long-term EEGs of three Wistar rats with spontaneous temporal lobe seizure were analyzed. We proposed the development of an energy efficient real-time seizure detection method that employs a hierarchical architecture. The first stage was used to fast detect the seizure-like EEG segment, and a classifier was utilized in the second stage for final confirmation. Only when a suspected seizure segment is found, the second stage is activated. With 2-staged architecture, it saved about 99.4% computation energy in the experiment. Therefore, it is useful to improve the longevity of the closed-loop seizure control system. Three classifiers, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) and support vector machine (SVM), were applied for comparison. From the experimental results, three classifiers yielded the comparable performances. However, considering of the trade-off between detection performances and power consumption, LDA which yielded the 100% detection rate, 0.22 FP/hr, and 1.69 s detection latency is suggested for a portable closed-loop seizure controller.Item type:Item, Design of wireless multi-parameter monitoring system for oral feeding of premature infants(2016-07) ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Kuo, Hsing-Chien ;Wang, Lin-Yu ;Ko, Mei-JuLin, Bor-ShyhPremature infants often cannot successfully and coordinately complete their oral feeding. Mature sucking, swallowing, and respiration activities are crucial indicators for the survival of newborn infants. Due to the vulnerability and unobvious muscle activities of premature infants, current clinical care givers mainly depend on the subjective behavioral observation of infants during oral feeding. There is still lack of an integrated oral feeding monitoring system to objectively and quantifiably monitor the related physiological parameters of premature infants. In this study, a wireless multi-parameter monitoring system for oral feeding of premature infants was proposed to monitor the sucking-swallowing-respiratory activities and the heart rate variability to provide quantitative indices of oral feeding. Here, a novel sucking pressure sensing module was also developed to monitor the premature infant\'s sucking pressure under oral feeding to avoid the immersion influence of milk. The experimental results showed that the proposed system detected the related physiological parameters of premature infants during oral feeding effectively and may provide an objective clinical evaluation tool for oral feeding ability and safety of premature infants in the future.Item type:Item, Detection of Spontaneous Temporal Lobe Epilepsy in Rats by Means of 1-axis Accelerometor Signal(2013-01-01) ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Liang, Sheng-Fu ;Shaw, Fu-Zen ;Huang, Yu-HsinWu, Ssu-YenEpilepsy is the most common psychological disorders in humans. Patients suffering from epilepsy usually experience behavioral symptoms, such as involuntary movement and rage reaction. Conventional monitoring with electroencephalogram and video is unpleasant for patients and not feasible for long-term monitoring. In this work, a seizure detection system with an accelerometer set on the subject\'s head is proposed to monitor the behavioral activities and to detect the seizure events in subjects. The Wistar rats with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) were used in our experiment. To reduce the computational energy, only one axis signal was utilized for seizure detection. A three-state finite state machine (FSM) was applied to determine the seizure activities, and the temporal features of y-axis ACC signal were calculated for state transition. The results show that our proposed on-line detection method can achieve 100% accuracy with extremely low false alarm rate of 0.035. It has the advantage of easy measurement and good performance for real-world applicability.Item type:Item, Development of a Wearable Mobile Electrocardiogram Monitoring System by Using Novel Dry Foam Electrodes(2014-09-01) ;Tseng, Kevin C. ;Lin, Bor-Shyh ;Liao, Lun-De ;Wang, Yu-TeWang, Yu-LinThe development of many telemedicine systems focus on the utility of communication techniques. However, the comfort of long-term Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring in daily life is necessary and is also an important unresolved issue. A wearable mobile electrocardiogram monitoring system (WMEMS) is proposed to monitor ECG in this study. It mainly consists of a wearable ECG acquisition device, a mobile phone platform, and a healthcare server. A novel dry foam electrode is also designed and embedded in the wearable ECG acquisition device. The novel dry foam electrode can provide good conductivity to acquire ECG effectively without conduction gels. By using the adapting property of the dry foam electrode, the skin-electrode impedance and the motion artifacts under movement can also be reduced by adapting to irregular skin surface. Moreover, by using the mobile phone as the system platform, the proposed WMEMS can monitor the user\'s ECG state continuously and anywhere in the globe if they are under the coverage of Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) cellular network. Finally, WMEMS is tested for detecting atrial fibrillation in the hospital. It really provides a good performance and is a good prototype for ECG telemedicine applications.Item type:Item, Development of a Wireless Oral-Feeding Monitoring System for Preterm Infants(2015-05-01) ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Hung, Jing-Sheng ;Wang, Lin-Yu ;Ko, Mei-JuChou, WillyOral-feeding disorder is common in preterm infants. It not only shows the adverse effect for growth and neurodevelopment in clinical but also becomes one of the important indicators of high-risk group for neurodevelopment delay in preterm infants. Preterm infants must coordinate the motor patterns of sucking, swallowing, and respiration skillfully to avoid choking, aspiration, oxygen desaturation, bradycardia, or apnea episodes. However, up to now, the judgment and classification severity in preterm infants are mostly subjective and phasic evaluations. Directly monitoring the coordination of sucking-swallowing-breathing during oral feeding simultaneously is difficult for preterm infants. In this study, we proposed a wireless oral-feeding monitoring system for preterm infants to quantitatively monitor the sucking pressure via a designed sucking pressure sensing device, swallowing activity via a microphone to detect swallowing sound, and diaphragmatic breathing movement via surface electromyogram. Moreover, a sucking-swallowing-breathing detection algorithm is also proposed to evaluate the events of sucking-swallowing-breathing activities. Furthermore, verification of the accuracy and rationality of oral-feeding parameters with clinical findings including sucking, swallowing, and breathing in term and preterm infants had proved the practicality and value of the proposed system.Item type:Item, Entrepreneurial orientation, learning orientation, and innovation in small and medium enterprises(2011) ;Huang, Shihping Kevin ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityFrom the resource-based perspective, entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation are two separate but complementary strategic orientations that emphasize the business philosophy and behavior in proactively detecting industrial environment, including market information and competitors strategy, in order to innovate and respond to the customers needs timely. Empirical studies have separately discussed the variables of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation in relation to firm-level innovation performance. However, there is limited research simultaneously examined the direct effect of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation on innovation performance, especially individual-level innovation performance. Scholars have suggested that future research may examine strategic human resource practices to explore if organizational factors may enhance or diminish the entrepreneurial orientation on innovation. Both entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation still require organizational learning practices to facilitate higher-order learning and innovation. Although scholars are interested in figuring out if additional moderator variables simultaneously affect market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation on firm performance, limited empirical studies have existed. An organization with high degree of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation still require learning orientation mechanism to create an environment where mutually beneficial relationships between employees and their organizations to facilitate learning and innovation. Therefore, learning orientation may make an organization innovate effectively. As a result, the overall purpose of this study is to assess the influence learning orientation on relationships between entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation and individual-level job related performance variable, employee innovative behaviors.Item type:Item, Entrepreneurship and Innovation: A Review of the Theory and Literatures(2011-01-01) ;Huang, Kevin Shihping ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis paper reviews entrepreneurship and innovation literature. The spectral analysis has been popularly applied to study the electrophysiological activities. However, the resolution is dominated by the window function of the algorithm used and the sample size. In this report, a temporal waveform analysis method is proposed to investigate the relationship of electrophysiological discharges and motor outcomes with a kindling process. Wistar rats were subjected to electrical amygdala kindling to induce temporal lobe epilepsy. During the kindling process, different morphologies of afterdischarges (ADs) were found and a recognition method, using template matching techniques combined with morphological comparators, was developed to automatically detect the epileptic patterns. The recognition results were compared to manually labeled results, and 79%-91% sensitivity was found. In addition, the initial ADs (the first 10 s) of different seizure stages were specifically utilized for recognition, and an average of 85% sensitivity was achieved. Our study provides an alternative viewpoint away from frequency analysis and time-frequency analysis to investigate epileptogenesis in an epileptic brain. The recognition method can be utilized as a preliminary inspection tool to identify remarkable changes in a patient\'s electrophysiological activities for clinical use. Moreover, we demonstrate the feasibility of predicting behavioral seizure stages from the early epileptiform discharges.Item type:Item, Highly Sensitive Lead Ion Detection in One Drop of Human Whole Blood Using Impedance-Modulated Field-Effect Transistors and a Portable Measurement Device(2020-06-29) ;Wang, Shin-Li ;Hsieh, Ching-Yen ;Sukesan, Revathi ;Chen, Jung-ChihWang, Yu-LinThis study reports the development of a rapid heavy metal ion screening tool for whole blood samples. The test system consists of an ion selective membrane-based impedance modulated field effect transistor (FET) sensor and a portable sensor measurement unit. This study focuses on the direct detection of lead ions in whole blood, without extensive sample pre-treatments. The sensing methodology is based on impedance changes in the membrane due to the specific ionophore-target metal ion interaction in the presence of a strong electric field. The changes in impedance caused by heavy metal ions are amplified by the FET to obtain a highly sensitive lead ion detection, with very low detection limit (near 10(-11) similar to 10(-10)M Pb2+). To reduce the complexity and enhance sensor performance, the whole blood samples are fractionated on chip without any external actuation/automation using simple gravitational blood cell separation. The test results in PBS, human serum and whole blood samples demonstrate high sensitivity and wide dynamic range of lead ion detection. The miniaturized extended gate FET sensor system is ideal for point of care and home-care diagnostics for heavy metal ion in blood.Item type:Item, Information technology innovation in India: The top 100 IT firms(2012-05-01) ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Huang, Shihping ;Wu, Yen-Chun Jim ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyPatents serve as an indicator of the innovation capability of countries, industries, or firms. Design/methodology/approach - Questionnaire data were collected from research and development (R&D) managers or owners of 49 SMEs of the bicycle industry in Taiwan. The questionnaire was designed to measure variables including knowledge absorptive capacity, knowledge acquisition of company, technical and industrial experiences of owner's and the R&D staff, innovation performance measures, and control variables. Findings - The results show that the depth and the breadth of its owner's technical and industrial experiences best explained absorptive capacity of an SME. In turn, the absorptive capacity and the knowledge acquisition activities of an SME affect its innovation performance. Research limitations/implications - The findings show that, first, SME owners' technical and industrial experiences are contributing factors to their companies' knowledge absorptive capacity; second, instead of R&D investment, SME personnel's scientific knowledge collection and diversity of knowledge sources contribute to innovation performance of companies. Because the data were limited to bicycle industry, future studies need to validate these findings in the SMEs of other industries. Originality/value - The value of the paper lies in the fact that SME owner's and its personnel's contributions to company's knowledge absorptive capacity and the concomitant effects of knowledge acquisition and knowledge absorption capacity on a firm's innovation performance are two issues seldom addressed in previous studies.Item type:Item, Monitoring of Retinoic Acid Uptake into H9c2 Cells Using Electric-Double-Layer (EDL) Gated Field-Effect Transistors(2020-08-24) ;Tsai, Shu-Yi ;Wang, Jen-Hsuan ;Chen, Po-Hsuan ;Paulose, Akhil K.Wang, Yu-LinFibronectin-immobilized extended gated electric-double-layer field-effect transistors are demonstrated for non-invasively monitoring retinoic acid uptake by H2c9 cell lines. The diffusion of retinoic acid into the cells is electrically measured as the drain current gain based on the change of the voltage drop in culture medium produced by the capacitance change of the cells. Impedance measurement and analysis reveal that the imaginary part dominates the major voltage drop in medium and the sensing characteristics as well. The sensor chip is confirmed to be a capacitive equivalent model and combining with the signal amplification by FETs. This non-invasive cell-based sensor platform enables to monitor the interaction between molecules and cells, which is promising for prospective applications in all kinds of intracellular study and drug screening.Item type:Item, Quantitative Real-Time Assessment for Feeding Skill of Preterm Infants(2017-06-01) ;Chen, Chang-Ting ;Wang, Lin-Yu ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Lin, Bor-Shyh影像與生醫光電研究所Nutritive sucking is the approach of obtaining primary food for newborns within six months. However, completing the precise coordination of sucking-swallowing-respiratory actions under oral feeding is usually difficult for preterm infants and may affect the body and neural development of the premature infant. For this reason, how to obtain the quantitatively physiological information related to oral feeding is useful for physicians making more accurate clinical diagnoses for oral feeding disorders. However, there is still lack of monitoring systems for evaluating the feeding skill of infants quantitatively and objectively. The assessment of the feeding skill or the diagnosis of oral-feeding disorders still depends on the clinical experience of medical staffs. In this study, a novel wireless monitoring system is proposed to evaluate the feeding behavior of infants quantitatively and objectively and analyze the characteristics of these actions under oral feeding. Here, a specific feeding bottle and an optical probe are also designed and successfully applied to noninvasively monitor the sucking and respiratory actions, and a microphone is also applied to monitor the swallowing action. From the experimental results, the sucking and swallowing rate increases and the respiratory rate decreases with the increase of the infant age. Moreover, the duration increases and the interval of sucking-action sequence decreases with the increase of the infant age respectively. The proposed system successfully assesses the feeding behavior of preterm infants and may provide an objective evaluation tool for oral feeding ability and identifying the risk of infant developmental delay in the future.Item type:Item, Rapid and Highly Sensitive Extended Gate FET-Based Sensors for Arsenite Detection Using a Handheld Device(2020-01-12) ;Tatavarthi, Sai Sudheer ;Wang, Shin-Li ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Chen, Jung-Chih分子醫學與生物工程研究所Heavy metals are very harmful to the environment and is toxic which affects the human health. Monitoring the heavy metal ion in food and water is necessary. In this research, we developed a FET based ion selective sensor for detecting Arsenite (As(III)) ions by a hand held device. The sensor characteristics are carried out and illustrated. This selective sensor shows higher sensitivity (35.19 mV/log [As3+]) than the ideal Nernstian slope. The dynamic range of the Arsenite based ion sensor is from 10(-10)M to 10(-4)M. The detection limit of this FET based ion selective sensor is below 10(-10)M and is comparable to ICP-MS. The sensor captures the particular target ion and is not affected by the interfering ions such as Cadmium and Lead. The sensitivity and selectivity characteristics are comparatively better than the traditional potentiometric Ion selective electrode (ISE). The sensor has shorter response time and is easy to operate. This sensor is affordable for everyone and convenient to use for monitoring the food and drinking water frequently.Item type:Item, Spike densities of the amygdala and neocortex reflect progression of kindled motor seizures(2018-01-01) ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Liang, Sheng-Fu ;Su, Alvin W. Y. ;Shaw, Fu-Zen生醫電子轉譯研究中心Amygdala kindling is a common temporal lobe-like seizure model. In the present study, temporal and spectral analyses of the ictal period were investigated throughout amygdala kindling in response to different behavioral seizures. Right-side amygdala was kindled to induce epileptiform afterdischarges (ADs). ADs of both the frontal cortex and amygdala were analyzed. Powers of the low (0-9 Hz)- and high (12-30 Hz)-frequency bands in response to different behavioral seizures were calculated. Densities of upward and downward peaks of spikes, which reflected information of spike count and spike pattern, throughout kindle-induced ADs were calculated. Progression was seen in the temporal and spectral characteristics of amygdala-kindled ADs in response to behaviors. Numbers of significant differences of all 1-s AD segments between two Racine's seizure stages were significantly higher in upward and downward indexes of the temporal spike than those using the spectral method in both the amygdala and neocortex. Ability for distinguishing seizure stages was significantly higher in temporal spike density of amygdala ADs compared to those of frontal ADs. Our results showed that amygdala kindling caused spectrotemporal changes of activities in the amygdala and frontal cortex. The density of spike-related peaks had better distinguishability in response to behavioral seizures, particularly in a seizure zone of amygdala. The present study provides a new temporal index of spike's peak density to understand progression of motor seizures in the kindling process.Item type:Item, Use of accelerometers to detect motor states in a seizure of rats with temporal lobe epilepsy(2012) ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;Liang, Sheng-Fu ;Shaw, Fu-Zen ;Su, Alvin W. Y.Chen, Yin-LinEpilepsy is the most common psychological disorders in humans. Patients suffering from epilepsy usually experience behavioral symptoms, such as involuntary movement and rage reaction. Conventional monitoring with EEG and video is unpleasant for patients. Use of the accelerometer and electroencephalogram to access the state of vigilance has been discussed recently. In addition to simply detecting the occurrence of a seizure event or not, we proposed a concept of motor detection method which detects the subtle change of motor states in a kindling-induced seizure by using the accelerometer's signals in this study. The Wistar rats with temporal lobe epilepsy were used in our experiments, and the accelerometers were set on the rat's head. The features of 3-axis accelerometer signals were extracted, and the support vector machine (SVM) was applied to determine the motor states. The results show that our proposed on-line detection method can detect the changes of motor responses in a kindling-induced seizure with 78% accuracy in average. It has the advantage of easy measurement for real-world applicability.
