Item type:Item, A solar-thermal energy harvesting scheme: enhanced heat capacity of molten HITEC salt mixed with Sn/SiOx core-shell nanoparticles(2014) ;Lai, Chih-Chung ;Chang, Wen-Chih ;Hu, Wen-Liang ;Wang, Zhiming M.Lu, Ming-ChangWe demonstrated enhanced solar-thermal storage by releasing the latent heat of Sn/SiOx core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a eutectic salt. The microstructures and chemical compositions of Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs were characterized. In situ heating XRD provides dynamic crystalline information about the Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs during cyclic heating processes. The latent heat of similar to 29 J g(-1) for Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs was measured, and 30% enhanced heat capacity was achieved from 1.57 to 2.03 J g (1) K (1) for the HITEC solar salt without and with, respectively, a mixture of 5% Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs. In addition, an endurance cycle test was performed to prove a stable operation in practical applications. The approach provides a method to enhance energy storage in solar-thermal power plants.Item type:Item, Dielectric metasurfaces: From wavefront shaping to quantum platforms(2020-05-01) ;Li, Chuanlin ;Yu, Peng ;Huang, Yongjun ;Zhou, QiangWu, JiangMetasurfaces are nanopatterned structures of sub-wavelength thickness. Their effective refractive index and spectral characteristic can be tailored by material composition, intrinsic and extrinsic resonances, structure size, and ambient conditions. Consequently, they allow for phase, amplitude, polarisation, and spatial control of an optical field beyond what natural materials can offer. Dielectric metasurfaces with lower loss have opened a wide range of new applications such as enhanced imaging, structural colour, holography, and planar sensors. In particular, beam steering and control measures such as nonlinear optics, ultrafast optics, and quantum optics are of increasing importance for quantum communication, computation, and information processing. In this review, the recent progress on dielectric metasurfaces is summarised, including advanced fabrication technologies and novel applications from advanced wavefront shaping to quantum platforms. In addition, a perspective for the future development of the field is presented.Item type:Item, Improved Efficiency of a Large-Area Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 Solar Cell by a Nontoxic Hydrogen-Assisted Solid Se Vapor Selenization Process(2014-04-09) ;Wu, Tsung-Ta ;Hu, Fan ;Huang, Jyun-Hong ;Chang, Chia-hoLai, Chih-chungA nontoxic hydrogen-assisted solid Se vapor selenization process (HASVS) technique to achieve a large-area (40 X 30 cm(2)) Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 (CIGS) solar panel with enhanced efficiencies from 7.1 to 10.8% (12.0% for active area) was demonstrated. The remarkable improvement of efficiency and fill factor comes from improved open circuit voltage (V-oc) and reduced dark current due to (1) decreased interface recombination raised from the formation of a widened buried homojunction with n-type Cd-cu participation and (2) enhanced separation of electron and hole carriers resulting from the accumulation of Na atoms on the surface of the CIGS film. The effects of microstructural, compositional, and electrical characteristics with hydrogen-assisted Se vapor selenization, including interdiffusion of atoms and formation of buried homojunction, were examined in detail. This methodology can be also applied to CIS (CuInSe2) thin film solar cells with enhanced efficiencies from 5.3% to 8.5% (9.4% for active area) and provides a facile approach to improve quality of CIGS and stimulate the nontoxic progress in the large scale CIGS PV industry.Item type:Item, Wafer Scale Phase-Engineered 1T-and 2H-MoSe2/Mo Core-Shell 3D-Hierarchical Nanostructures toward Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction(2016-11-23) ;Qu, Yindong ;Medina, Henry ;Wang, Sheng-Wen ;Wang, Yi-ChungChen, Chia-WeiThe necessity for new sources for greener and cleaner energy production to replace the existing ones has been increasingly growing in recent years. Of those new sources, the hydrogen evolution reaction has a large potential. In this work, for the first time, MoSe2/Mo core-shell 3D-hierarchical nanostructures are created, which are derived from the Mo 3D-hierarchical nanostructures through a low-temperature plasma-assisted selenization process with controlled shapes grown by a glancing angle deposition system.
