Item type:Item, A concentration photovoltaic system adopting a liquid crystal light modulation(2012) ;Tsou, Yu-Shih ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Wei, An-Chi ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA concentration photovoltaic (CPV) system adopting a liquid crystal light modulation is demonstrated. The LC light modulation adjusts the optical power density of the incident light based on the electrically controllable distribution of LC directors. The electrically tunable concentration ratio of the LC light modulation can help to achieve the highest and a fixed efficiency of the CPV system because the LC light modulation helps to increase the photocurrent at a low illumination and prevent the effect of the series resistance at a high illumination. This study opens a window in solar cells by using LC light modulations.Item type:Item, Concentrating Photovoltaic System Using a Liquid Crystal Lens(2012-12-15) ;Tsou, Yu-Shih ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;Wei, An-Chi ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) system with a steady electric output adopting an electrically tunable concentration ratio of the liquid crystals (LC) lens is demonstrated. The distribution of the LC directors of the LC lens can be controlled by an applied voltage in order to adjust the number of incident photons in an area. As a result, the CPV system adopting an LC lens can be operated with a static and maximum output power density under different ambient illuminations because the LC lens with an electrically tunable concentration ratio helps to increase the photocurrent at a low illumination and prevent the effect of the series resistance at a high illumination. The detailed operating principles are discussed, and the experimental results are performed. We believe this letter can help enhance the output power density of CPV systems by using active optical elements whose concentration ratio is tunable.Item type:Item, Designs for optimizing depth of focus and spot size for UV laser ablation(2010-11-01) ;Wei, An-Chi ;Sze, Jyh-Rou ;Chern, Jyh-Long ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsThe proposed optical systems are designed for extending the depths of foci (DOF) of UV lasers, which can be exploited in the laser-ablation technologies, such as laser machining and lithography. The designed systems are commonly constructed by an optical module that has at least one aspherical surface. Two configurations of optical module, lens-only and lens-reflector, are presented with the designs of 2-lens and 1-lens-1-reflector demonstrated by commercially optical software. Compared with conventional DOF-enhanced systems, which required the chromatic aberration lenses and the light sources with multiple wavelengths, the proposed designs are adapted to the single-wavelength systems, leading to more economical and efficient systems.Item type:Item, Designs for optimizing depth of focus and spot size for UV laser ablation(2010-11-01) ;Wei, An-Chi ;Sze, Jyh-Rou ;Chern, Jyh-Long ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsThe proposed optical systems are designed for extending the depths of foci (DOF) of UV lasers, which can be exploited in the laser-ablation technologies, such as laser machining and lithography. The issues resulting from the misalignment of the ALEL and OLED pixels were investigated with respect to the effects of the pixel spacing and Moire pattern. The pixel spacing effect has been shown to be the main cause of gain loss during alignment, whereas the Moire pattern effect has been shown to be suppressed under the conditions of an appropriate rotational alignment and identical sizes for the ALEL and OLED pixels.Item type:Item, LEDs on curved ceramic substrate with primary optics for modification of luminous intensity(2011-01-01) ;Wei, An-Chi ;Sze, Jyh-Rou ;Chern, Jyh-Long ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsUnlike the conventional LED luminary with a planar substrate and only the forward emission, the proposed LED luminary with a curved ceramic substrate can perform both the forward and the backward emissions. Assembled with the proper primary optics, an illustrated LED bulb has been designed, fabricated and measured. The measured luminous intensity of the LED bulb has shown the backward emission and designed distribution with the beam-angle of 133. To broaden the application areas, such a LED bulb on a curved substrate has been modularized as a streetlight. The measured results of the proposed streetlight have shown that the beam angle of the luminous intensity and the luminaire efficiency are 132 degrees and 86%, respectively. Meanwhile, its luminous characteristics also fit the standard for lighting design of urban roads.Item type:Item, Light-emitting diodes on curved ceramic substrate with primary optics for modification of luminous intensity(2012-04-20) ;Wei, An-Chi ;Sze, Jyh-Rou ;Chern, Jyh-Long ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsUnlike the conventional light-emitting diode (LED) luminaire with a planar substrate and only the forward emission, the proposed LED luminaire with a curved ceramic substrate can perform both the forward and the backward emissions and inherits the merits of good heat-dissipation and low cost from the ceramic substrate. The simulation results show that a top-emission OLED/PLED with the designed mesa-cone as the LEL yields the efficiency, of 26.0%, a factor of 1.57 improvement.Item type:Item, Plastic planar-integrated free-space optical interconnector(2007-08-01) ;Wei, An-Chi ;Gruber, Matthias ;Jarczynski, Manfred ;Jahns, JUrgenShieh, Han-Ping D.The planar integration of free-space optical (PIFSO) systems on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrates was demonstrated using an example of a fiber-to-free-space-to-fiber interconnector module. This plastic module was designed to accommodate standard mechanically-tran sferable-(MT-) connected fiber cables and contained a set of two nested refractive imaging lenses, one of which was used as an off-axis lens. In our experiment, an average coupling efficiency of -4.4 dB and a crosstalk suppression larger than 33 d13 were measured. The perfortnance, fabrication tolerances, and operation conditions of this interconnector module as well as the general benefits of plastic materials for the PIFSO systems were discussed.
