Item type:Item, A dynamic analysis of motorcycle ownership and usage: A panel data modeling approach(2012-11-01) ;Wen, Chieh-Hua ;Chiou, Yu-Chiun ;Huang, Wan-Ling ;運輸與物流管理系 註:原交通所+運管所Department of Transportation and Logistics ManagementThis study aims to develop motorcycle ownership and usage models with consideration of the state dependence and heterogeneity effects based on a large-scale questionnaire panel survey on vehicle owners. To account for the independence among alternatives and heterogeneity among individuals, the modeling structure of motorcycle ownership adopts disaggregate choice models considering the multinomial, nested, and mixed logit formulations. Three types of panel data regression models - ordinary, fixed, and random effects - are developed and compared for motorcycle usage. The estimation results show that motorcycle ownership in the previous year does exercise a significantly positive effect on the number of motorcycles owned by households in the current year, suggesting that the state dependence effect does exist in motorcycle ownership decisions. In addition, the fixed effects model is the preferred specification for modeling motorcycle usage, indicating strong evidence for existence of heterogeneity. Among various management strategies evaluated under different scenarios, increasing gas prices and parking fees will lead to larger reductions in total kilometers traveled. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The standard generalised nested logit (or the cross-nested logit model) is a special case of the latent class generalised nested logit model (LCGNL) that accounts for heterogeneity in individuals' preferences by a number of segments and simultaneously identifies segment sizes and individual profiles. In addition, the LCGNL model allows flexible substitution patterns among alternatives. This extends the standard LC model with the multinomial logit formulation, such that the independence from irrelevant alternatives property does not hold within segments. The proposed model was used to identify potential segments of travellers' preferences towards air and bus carriers. The estimation results of the LCGNL models indicate that degrees of competition vary across carriers and that differential sensitivity in preference parameters exists between segments. The LCGNL model outperforms the other models; therefore, it is a better approach for analysing carrier choice behaviour.Item type:Item, EFFECTS OF TEMPORALLY DIFFERENTIAL FARES ON TAIPEI METRO RIDERS' MODE AND TIME-OF-DAY CHOICES(2010-02-01) ;Lan, Lawrence W. ;Lee, Hsiang-Yi ;Wen, Chieh-Hua ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityIntroducing temporally differential fares to shift a portion of peak-hour demand to off-peak hours shows promise in mitigating the overcrowded Taipei Metro system during peak hours. This study looked to elucidate how Taipei Metro riders would change their times of travel or use of other travel modes, should peak-hour surcharge or off-peak discount fare schemes be introduced Multinomial logit and nested lop models were employed to depict the riders' stated behavior, in terms of arrival times and mode choices, within the context of a scenario involving tested differential fare levels Results showed that introducing temporally differential fares would prompt a portion of peak-hour Metro riders to shift to off-peak periods, or even to choose the use of other modes The Metro riders were sensitive to the tested differential fare levels, especially the peak-hour surcharge The afternoon riders were more sensitive to proposed fare changes than the morning riders To implement the temporally differential fares successfully within the Metro system, it is suggested that peak hours be carefully designated and that peak-hour riders be clearly distinguished from off-peak ridersItem type:Item, Integrated modeling of car/motorcycle ownership, type and usage for estimating energy consumption and emissions(2009-08-01) ;Chiou, Yu-Chiun ;Wen, Chieh-Hua ;Tsai, Shih-Hsun ;Wang, Wei-Ying運輸與物流管理系 註:原交通所+運管所Devising effective management strategies to relieve dependency on private vehicles, i.e. cars and motorcycles, depends on the ability to accurately and carefully examine the effects of corresponding strategies. Disaggregate choice models regarding the ownership, type and usage of cars and motorcycles are required to achieve this. Consequently. this study proposes integrated car and motorcycle models based on a large-scale questionnaire survey of Taiwanese owners of cars and motorcycles, respectively. Incorporating gas mileage and emission coefficients for different types of cars and motorcycles into the proposed models can enable the estimation and comparison of reductions in energy consumption and emissions under various management strategies. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed integrated models, scenarios involving 10% and 30% increases in gas prices are analyzed and compared. The results indicate that gas price elasticities of cars and motorcycles are low, ranging from 0.47 to 0.50 for cars and 0.11 for motorcycles. Additionally, a high ratio of discouraged car users shifting to use of motorcycles neutralizes the effects of increased gas price in reducing energy consumption and emissions. Pollution of CO and HC even slightly increased because motorcycles are much more polluting in terms of CO and HC. At last, the reductions of energy consumption and emissions under 10% and 30% increase (or decrease) in other manipulating variables are also estimated and compared. The countermeasures for reducing ownership and usage of cars and motorcycles are then recommended accordingly. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The latent class nested logit model is used to capture flexible substitution patterns among alternatives and preference heterogeneity across individuals while simultaneously identifying the number, sizes, and characteristics of market segments. The results indicate that a four-segment latent class nested logit model with individual characteristics in segment membership functions is the most preferred specification. Most high-speed rail travelers were cost-sensitive to access modes, and thus strategies that reduce the access costs can be more effective than reducing the access times. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The analysis has produced perceptual maps of relative positions of airlines and their service attributes. Empirical data were collected from Taiwanese air passengers who had flown from Taipei to Tokyo and to Singapore. Factor analysis was performed to reduce a large number of airline service attributes into a small set of underlying factors. The results of multidimensional scaling analyses reveal that some air carriers are closely competitive; this can be seen by their close proximity in the perceptual map. However, certain airlines possess a unique service quality profile and are not strongly associated with other airlines; such unique firms appear as isolated points on the perceptual map. Interestingly, both multidimensional scaling and correspondence analysis produce similar perceptual maps of the airlines' relative positions and service attributes. However, the advantage of correspondence analysis over multidimensional scaling is that data collection is relatively quick and easy because the analyst is not required to obtain respondents' ratings for each attribute. This study provides specific suggestions about how air carriers on each route can use the results to improve their performance or to build a differential edge.Item type:Item, Using multiple correspondence cluster analysis to map the competitive position of airlines(2011-09-01) ;Wen, Chieh-Hua ;Chen, Wei-Ying ;運輸與物流管理系 註:原交通所+運管所Department of Transportation and Logistics ManagementAirlines can use market positioning to identify the major strengths and weaknesses of their services. The empirical analysis examines the international airlines operating on the Taipei-Tokyo and Taipei-Osaka routes. The multiple correspondence analysis results illustrate the relative positions of airlines, service attributes, and travelers' characteristics in a perceptual map. The cluster analysis clearly identifies two groups of airlines that compete on particular services. The findings suggest that each airline can simultaneously adopt strategies to maintain and enhance its current strengths and to strengthen attributes in which it is lacking. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
