Item type:Item, Carrying an arbitrarily large amount of information using a single quantum particle(2020-08-25) ;Hsu, Li-Yi ;Lai, Ching-Yi ;Chang, You-Chia ;Wu, Chien-MingLee, Ray-KuangTheoretically speaking, a photon can travel arbitrarily long before it enters into a detector, resulting in a click. How much information can a photon carry? We study a bipartite asymmetric "two-way signaling" protocol as an extension of that proposed by Del Santo and Dakic. Suppose that Alice and Bob are distant from each other and each of them has an n-bit string. They are tasked to exchange the information of their local n-bit strings with each other, using only a single photon during the communication. It has been shown that the superposition of different spatial locations in a Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer enables bipartite local encodings. We show that, after the travel of a photon through a cascade of n-level MZ interferometers in our protocol, the one of Alice and Bob whose detector clicks can access the other's full information of the n-bit string, while the other can gain one bit of information. That is, the wave-particle duality makes two-way signaling possible, and a single photon can carry an arbitrarily large (but finite) amount of information.Item type:Item, Curvature-assisted wave localization in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers(2017-01-01) ;Hong, Kou-Bin ;Lin, Chun-Yan ;Chang, Tsu-Chi ;Liang, Wei-HsuanLai, Ying-YuBy implementing surface structures in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers as manifolds for curved space, we experimentally study the impacts of geometrical constraints on wave localization. We observe localized waves pinned to the maximal curvature in an ellipticalring, and confirm the reduction in the localization length of waves by measuring near and far field patterns, as well as the corresponding dispersion relation. Theoretically, analyses based on a dissipative model with a parabola curve give good agreement remarkably to experimental measurement on the transition from delocalized to localized waves. The introduction of curved topology allows to control and design lasing modes in the nonlinear regime.Item type:Item, KDM4B as a Target for Prostate Cancer: Structural Analysis and Selective Inhibition by a Novel Inhibitor(2014-07-24) ;Chu, Chia-Han ;Wang, Ling-Yu ;Hsu, Kai-Cheng ;Chen, Chung-ChinCheng, Hsing-HungThe KDM4/JMJD2 Jumonji C-containing histone lysine demethylases (KDM4A-KDM4D), which selectively remove the methyl group(s) from tri/dimethylated lysine 9/36 of H3, modulate transcriptional activation and genome stability. The overexpression of KDM4A/KDM4B in prostate cancer and their association with androgen receptor suggest that KDM4A/KDM4B are potential progression factors for prostate cancer. Here, we report the crystal structure of the KDM4B.pyridine 2,4-dicarboxylic acid. H3K9me3 ternary complex, revealing the core active-site region and a selective K9/K36 site. A selective KDM4A/KDM4B inhibitor, 4, that occupies three subsites in the binding pocket is identified by virtual screening. Pharmacological and genetic inhibition of KDM4A/KDM4B significantly blocks the viability of cultured prostate cancer cells, which is accompanied by increased H3K9me3 staining and transcriptional silencing of growth-related genes. Significantly, a substantial portion of differentially expressed genes are AR-responsive, consistent with the roles of KDM4s as critical AR activators. Our results point to KDM4 as a useful therapeutic target and identify a new inhibitor scaffold.Item type:Item, Lasing on nonlinear localized waves in curved geometry(2017-11-13) ;Hong, Kou-Bin ;Lin, Chun-Yan ;Chang, Tsu-Chi ;Liang, Wei-HsuanLai, Ying-YuThe use of geometrical constraints exposes many new perspectives in photonics and in the fundamental studies of nonlinear waves. By implementing surface structures in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers as manifolds for curved space, we experimentally study the impacts of geometrical constraints on nonlinear wave localization. We observe localized waves pinned to the maximal curvature in an elliptical-ring, and confirm the reduction in the localization length of waves by measuring near and far field patterns, as well as the corresponding energy-angle dispersion relation. Theoretically, analyses based on a dissipative model with a parabola curve give good agreement remarkably to experimental measurement on the reduction in the localization length. The introduction of curved geometry allows to control and design lasing modes in the nonlinear regime. For playing as actuators, the micro-coil generate local magnetic field with applied current of 15 mA to quickly manipulated magnetic beads to center of micro-coil within one minute. For functioning as heaters, the micro-coil heater can be quickly heated up to denatured temperature of 95 degrees C with input power of 50.5 mW, and its heating and cooling rate are 19.7 and 11.8 degrees C/s, respectively. For the typical 25 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) cycles, it took only 770 seconds. To further shrink and optimize the multi-layer planar micro-coils chip can be possibly used to manipulate single cell with magnetic beads to specific region and analyze its gene sequence by using single cell PCR technique.
