Item type:Item, A broadband microstrip-to-waveguide transition using planar technique(2001) ;Lee, CJ ;Wu, HS ;Tzuang, CKC ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThis paper presents a novel methodology, which employs a multi-layer structure to act as an interconnection between microstrip and rectangular waveguide. A Ka-band microstrip-to-waveguide transition consisting of two back-to-back mode converters are designed and implemented on the microwave printed circuit board. The field-matching between the microstrip and the partially filled rectangular waveguide can obtain great scattering characteristics of over 40% bandwidth and low transmission loss of -0.28 dB. These attractive performances indicate that the proposed microstrip-to-waveguide transition can provide a feasible approach to integrate all the RF front-end components in one module by using conventional PCB (printed circuit board) fabrication process.Item type:Item, A fully all-planar integrated Ka-band FSK transceiver module(2001) ;Lee, CJ ;Hung, TP ;Lin, SC ;Wu, HSTsai, CYAn open RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit) architecture employing ACSS (Advanced Coplanar Strips System) guiding technology is presented in this paper. This approach can integrate all the RF front-end components in one module using conventional PCB (printed circuit board) fabrication process. A 10 Mb/s FSK signal is upconverted to 30.18 GHz and 30.28 GHz and broadcasted through a cone-shaped antenna at power level of 10 dBm. The received signal is directly converted to baseband by even harmonic quadrature mixer, which shows a great isolation of 30 dB between RF and LO signal. The measured waveforms of the reported transceiver demonstrate the potential of constructing the wireless system with all-planar integrated circuits.Item type:Item, A real-time poling approach for preparing second-order nonlinear optical polymer thin films(1997-07-30) ;Jou, JH ;Wu, HS ;Chiou, JF ;Yang, PKHuang, JYA new real-time poling approach for preparing second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer thin films is presented. The presented method may be conveniently applied to many polymer thin film systems without going through the complicated conventional synthesis and poling procedures. This method, which is proven in this work to be feasible experimentally, is done by simultaneously co-depositing a NLO active dye, disperse red 1 and two polyamide thin film forming monomers on a gold electrodes pre-patterned glass substrate while concurrently applying an electrical field for poling. A second harmonic generation (SHG) signal is detected from the resultant thin films at a very low poring field ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 MV/cm which increases in intensity as the poling field increases. The SRW is made by multilayered integrated circuit processes, which typically have large ratios of SRW lateral dimensions to substrate thickness. Two theoretical methods, finite-element method and deembedding of composite structure consisting of SRW and mode converters, are applied to investigate the propagation characteristics of the SRW. Application of the dispersion characteristics of the two-dimensional periodical structures coupled with appropriate mode converter designs leads to results in SRW designs supporting TE(10), TM(00), and TM(10) modes. Measurements and the two theoretical approaches indicate that the slow-wave factor is 4.9 and Q-factor is 260 at 6.85 GHz for the TE(10) mode propagation with a cutoff frequency of 4.10 GHz (0.348 factor of cutoff frequency of conventional rectangular waveguide using the same material and dimensions). The theoretical data show the TM(00) mode to have a slow-wave factor of 1.8, Q-factor of 187.6 at 11.4 GHz, and cutoff frequency of 10.2 GHz. The TM10 mode has a slow-wave factor of 1.98, Q-factor of 187.6 at 12.5 GHz, and cutoff frequency of 10.4 GHz.Item type:Item, Coalesced single-input single-output dual-band filter(2003) ;Chang, CH ;Wu, HS ;Yang, HJ ;Tzuang, CKC電信工程研究所An experimental proof-of-concept two-terminal single-input and single-output (SISO) 1.7GHz/4.1GHz; dual-band filter is presented. It incorporates the so-call frequency-selective resonators that are composite in structure, cascading a microstrip and microstrip on a two-dimensional periodical surface or the so-called PBG(photonic bandgap) ground plane. The composite resonators add additional degrees of freedom for controlling the relative positions of the passband center frequencies, Thus making the dual-band filters, which essential share one common layout. Measured and theoretical filter characteristics for such coalesced dual-band filter agree excellently, validating the proposed concepts.Item type:Item, Electric-magnetic-electric slow-wave microstrip line and bandpass filter of compressed size(2002-08-01) ;Wu, CK ;Wu, HS ;Tzuang, CKC ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThis paper presents a novel integrated microstrip low-loss slow-wave line. The new microstrip replaces the conventional metal strip by composite metals paralleling the electric surface and magnetic surface (MS). The MS made of an array of coupled inductors shows a high-impedance state in the stopband, below which the propagation properties can be well controlled by varying the dimensions of the electric surface and MS. The dispersion curves obtained by matrix-pencil analyses closely correspond to those obtained by scattering-parameter extraction. Theoretical results, as confirmed experimentally, indicate that an increase of over 60% in the slow-wave factor can be achieved without sacrificing propagation losses, using the proposed structure. This electric-magnetic-electric (EME) microstrip is insensitive to the alignment position of the periodical structure, and can be constructed using conventional printed-circuit-board fabrication processes and integrated with other microwave components in a multilayered circuit. A compact EME bandpass filter (BPF) with suppressed harmonic responses is presented. The length of the filter is reduced by 26%, and the measured insertion loss and fractional bandwidth is comparable to that of a conventional microstrip BPF on the same substrate.Item type:Item, Integrated tungsten chemical mechanical polishing process characterization for via plug interconnection in ultralarge scale integrated circuits(2002-08-01) ;Wang, CK ;Wu, HS ;Ou, NT ;Cheng, HC電子工程學系及電子研究所One integrated tungsten (W) chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process characterization with wide production margin is developed for W plug application in sub-quarter micron technology. In this study, it is identified that donut-type function failure and reliability degradation on a designed application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) product vehicle result from an extra oxide layer atop the W plugs. W recess in via holes makes the plugs more vulnerable to oxide layer formation. CMP polish rate uniformity, layout dependence of via holes and queue-time (Q-time) control between WCMP and post-cleaning treatment are key parameters for preventing failure from interfacial oxide layer. Integrated optimization of WCMP process combined with W extrusion by a slight oxide polish immediately after WCMP is proposed to achieve a robust W plug process. Significant yield improvement from 45% to 82% in wafer edge region and 0% failure in three qualification lots in a product reliability test are demonstrated.Item type:Item, Miniaturized high-gain synthetic rectangular waveguide antenna of near-omnidirectional radiation pattern(2004) ;Wu, HS ;Tzuang, CKC ;傳播研究所Institute of Communication StudiesA miniaturized synthetic dielectric-filled rectangular waveguide antenna of near-omnidirectional radiation pattern is presented. The main body of the antenna is the synthetic rectangular waveguide (SRW), consisting of two-dimensional (2D) photonic bandgap (PBG) arrays at both top and bottom surfaces of the SRW. The waveguide antenna with size of 71.0 mm by 10.5 mm, consisting of 4 slots (each 7.0 mm by 0.4 mm) in the broadside wall, is built by conventional FR4 (epsilon(r) = 4.1) processes. Between 4.78 GHz and 5.65 GHz, the measured input reflection coefficient including the effects of the connector and microstrip-to-waveguide transition is kept below -10dB. The proposed synthetic waveguide antenna shows the maximum antenna gain of 4.28 dBi and 3dB beamwidth of 130degrees at 9.5degrees from the broadside of the antenna at 5.25 GHz, demonstrating a great potential for portable communication devices.Item type:Item, Miniaturized microwave passive filter incorporating multilayer synthetic quasi-TEM transmission line(2005-09-01) ;Wu, HS ;Yang, HJ ;Peng, CJ ;Tzuang, CKC電信工程研究所This paper presents a novel approach to miniaturizing a transmission-line (TL)-based bandpass filter (BPF). The BPF is miniaturized by incorporating multilayer stacked synthetic quasi-TEM TLs made of complementary conducting strip (CCS) metal surfaces. The stacked CCS TLs are separated by a meshed ground plane, whose coupling effect was experimentally shown negligibly to affect desired circuit performance. A brief description of the symmetric third-order TL filter synthesis procedure is reported to map such an idealized BPF to the prototype made of the stacked synthetic CCS TLs. Excellent agreement is obtained by comparing the experimental and theoretical filter frequency responses showing a 2.46-dB insertion loss, a -16.8-dB return loss with under 5% offset of low-side out-band transmission zeros, and a 2% offset of center frequency. A quick estimate of the proposed miniaturized filter design based on synthetic quasi-TEM lines shows that the particular filter prototype approaches the process limit.Item type:Item, Miniaturized synthetic rectangular waveguide(2003) ;Wu, HS ;Tzuang, CKC ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringAn artificially engineered, dielectric-filled rectangular waveguide is presented. Such synthetic waveguide, made by conventional printed-circuit board (PCB) process, consists of two-dimensional periodical arrays at the top and bottom surfaces and two metallic sidewalls. A synthetic waveguide of cross-section 8.0 mm by 0.609 mm relative permintivity (epsilon(r)) 3.38, shows cutoff frequency at 4 GHz with normalized propagation constant asymptotically approaching 4.5 at frequencies much greater than the cutoff frequency. Rigorous measurements show that the extracted dispersion curves agree well with theoretical data, demonstrating the feasibility of size reduction of the synthetic rectangular waveguide breaking the well-known limit of 1/rootepsilon(r) imposed on the conventional rectangular waveguide. Measured data show that the slow-wave factor is 185% higher and cutoff frequency 61.9% lower when comparing the synthetic waveguide with the conventional waveguide of identical dimensions and material constant.Item type:Item, PBG-enhanced inductor(2002) ;Wu, HS ;Tzuang, CKC ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA novel inductor configuration, consisting of a two-dimensional photonic bandgap (PBG) periodical array in addition to the existing inductor, e.g., spiral inductor, is built, analyzed, and tested. Measurements show that a one-turn, 13.1 mm long spiral inductor (3 mm by 3 mm) placed on a PBG ground plane made of unit cells using coupled inductors of dimension 1.5 mm by 1.5 mm on Roger 4003(TM) substrates can increase the inductance by 34%, reduce the series resistance by 45%, improve the Q-factor by 33%, and extend the peak Q-factor frequency by 14% as compared to the conventional spiral inductor of the same size. Dispersion characteristics of both PBG-enhanced and conventional spiral inductors are reported.Item type:Item, Synthesized high-impedance CMOS thin-film transmission line(2004) ;Wu, HH ;Wu, HS ;Tzuang, CKC ;傳播研究所Institute of Communication StudiesA synthetic quasi-TEM CMOS transmission line (TL) of wide range characteristic impedance from 58.3 to 95 Omega is presented for miniaturization of CMOS RFIC. The synthetic TL consists of unit cells made of complementary-conducting strips (CCS) and connecting arm for signal interface residing on the M5 and M1 metal layers of a typical 0.25 mu m 1P5M CMOS process. Measured results and theoretical data indicate that the loss per guiding Wavelength of the meandered CCS TL is about 13 % lower than that of the meandered microstrip of characteristic impedance 86.4 Omega at 40 GHz.
