Item type:Item, A DEA benchmarking methodology for strategic management of new product development based on decentralized profit-center business model(2007-01-01) ;Trappey, Amy J. C. ;Chiang, Tzu-An ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Hou, Eric J. -R.管理科學系In today's highly competitive marketplace, technology-driven large organizations widely adopt decentralized profit-center business model. In order to complete a series of NPD activities on time and in budget, the profit-center managers need an objective benchmarking approaches to gain precious perception into the relation of different resource allocations, profits, costs and times for each NPD activity. Thus, this study put forward a novel benchmarking methodology to optimize the NPD activities within a profit center for achieving the maximum profit goal and to guide NPD engineers to learn the best benchmarking practices. By applying the real case of the electric scooter design project, this research demonstrates the methodology at work with superior results, comparing to other existing approaches.Item type:Item, A simple method of determining the pitch of a chiral nematic liquid crystal(2007) ;Tang, Tsung-Ta ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Lin, Chia-Jen ;Pan, Ru-Pin電子物理學系The pitch value P of a chiral nematic liquid crystal is a critical parameter fin. azimuthal anchoring strength measurement. The Grandjean-Cano wedge method is a conventional technique for pitch determination, but the perfect wedge cell with known angle and uniform disclination lines are required. In this work, we have developed an improved Grandjean-Cano method, which is simple and gives accurate pitch value. The sensitivity of this new method is +/-lambda/2 Delta n.Item type:Item, A tunable terahertz filter and its switching properties in terahertz region based on a defect mode of a metallic photonic crystal(2011-06-15) ;Kim, Yong Sung ;Lin, Shawn-Yu ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Pan, Ru-Pin電子物理學系We theoretically investigate and discuss an electrically tunable terahertz filter design and its optical switching properties based on the defect mode of a woodpile metallic photonic crystal (MPC). The model filter design is based on a dual use of an MPC as a resonator and as electrodes with a liquid crystal used as a defect layer. The static and the dynamic responses of a realistic liquid crystal are obtained using the Oseen-Frank elastic continuum theory, and the corresponding transmission spectra are calculated using an analytic modal expansion method combined with a transfer-matrix method. The tuning range of f = 1.430 similar to 1.577 THz and the order of milliseconds switching property are observed in our design. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. This research studies the forecast accuracy of long and short product lifecycle datasets using simple logistic, Gompertz, and the time-varying extended logistic models. The performance of the models was evaluated using the mean absolute deviation and the root mean square error. Time series datasets for 22 electronic products were used to evaluate and compare the performance of the three models. The results show that the time-varying extended logistic model fits short product lifecycle datasets 70% better than the simple logistic and the Gompertz models. The findings also show that the time-varying extended logistic model is better suited to predict market capacity with limited historical data as is typically the case for short lifecycle products. Leveraging a crowd of smartphone users to collect annotated activity data in the wild is a promising direction because the data being collected are realistic and diverse. However, current research lacks a systematic analysis comparing different approaches for collecting such data and investigating how users use these approaches to collect activity data in real world settings. In this paper, we report results from a field study investigating the use of mobile crowdsourcing to collect annotated travel activity data through three approaches: Participatory, Context Triggered In Situ, and Context-Triggered Post Hoc. In particular, we conducted two phases of analysis. In Phase One, we analyzed and compared the resulting data collected via the three approaches and user experience. In Phase Two, we analyzed users' recording and annotation behavior as well as the annotation content in using each approach in the field. Our results suggested that although Context-Triggered approaches produced a larger number of recordings, they did not necessarily lead to a larger quantity of data than the Participatory approach. It was because many of the recordings were either not labeled, incomplete, and/or fragmented due to the imperfect context detection. In addition, recordings collected by the Participatory approach tended to be more complete and contain less noise. In terms of user experience, while users appreciated automated recording and reminders because of their convenience, they highly valued having the control over what and when to record and annotate that the Participatory approach provided. Finally, we showed that activity type (Driver, Riding as Passenger, Walking) influenced users' behaviors in recording and annotating their activity data. It influenced the timing of recording and annotating using the Participatory approach, users' receptivity using the Context-Triggered In Situ approach, and the characteristics of the content of annotations. Based on these findings, we provide design and methodological recommendations for future work that aims to leverage mobile crowdsourcing to collect annotated activity data.Item type:Item, CHINA RFID PATENT ANALYSIS(2009) ;Trappey, Charles V. ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Taghaboni-Dutta, Fataneh ;Trappey, Amy J. C.管理科學系China is one of the world's largest manufacturers and consumers of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) applications. Current estimates show that China will need over 3 billion RFID tags to satisfy demand in the year 2009. The applications for RFID patents have spread across a very diverse range of inventions and in the future it is likely that most products manufactured in China will contain an RFID tag. China's RFID industry has grown along with the demand and researchers are making significant technological advances. In this research, patent data from the State Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China (SIPO) have been used to explore RFID technology development and its trends. Patent abstracts containing the key word and phrase "RFID" and "Radio Frequency Identification" were collected for analysis, content extraction, and clustering. In total, 1,389 patents from the SIPO database covering the years 1995 to 2008 were retrieved and archived for analysis. Patents provide exclusive rights and legal protection for inventors, play an important role in the development and fair diffusion of technology, and contain detailed specifications necessary to define and protect the boundaries of an invention. Through patent analysis, companies monitor the development of technology and evaluate the position of potential competitors in the market. This research applies patent content analysis to map and interpret the current trends of RFID technology development in China. A patent content clustering method is used to cluster different patent documents into homogenous groups, and then technology forecasting is applied to evaluate possible market opportunities for future inventors and investors. The results suggest that the cluster called RFID wireless communication devices has entered the saturation stage and thus provides limited opportunity for development. Four other clusters; RFID concepts and applications, RFID architecture, RFID tracking implementation, and RFID transmission apparatus, have entered the mature stage. The RFID frequency and waves cluster appears to be in early growth stage with good development potential. Since the technology related to basic RFID concepts and devices has reached a mature stage in China, the research and development seems to be targeting the improvement of the RFID frequencies and waves as a means to develop more reliable RFID systems and applications.Item type:Item, Controllable alignment modes of nematic liquid crystals on argon ion beam bombarded polyimide films(2007) ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Wang, Chih-Chieh ;Pan, Ru-Pin ;Tang, Tsung-TaChang, Shao-JuWe investigate the alignment properties of nematic liquid crystal on polyimide films bombarded by Ar ion beams with a small diode sputter type ion-beam source. The alignments of nematic liquid crystal 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) on treated polyimide surface are characterized by using polarizing optical microscope and conoscope. The polyimide surfaces are also studied by using atomic force microscope and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. We have demonstrated that the polyimide surface treated by Ar ion beams can give both homogeneous and homeotropic alignments with the same ion beam apparatus but varying the energy of ion beam and the bombarding time.Item type:Item, Electrically tunable room-temperature 2 pi liquid crystal terahertz phase shifter(2006-07-01) ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Hsieh, Cho-Fan ;Tang, Tsung-Ta ;Pan, Ru-PinPan, Ci-LingTunable phase shift up to 360 degrees at 1 THz is demonstrated using electrically controlled birefringence in a vertically aligned nematic liquid crystal (E7) cell, 1.83 mm in thickness. This research proposes an analysis process to analyze unstructured input from consumer dialogues. The goal is to apply the critical incident and text mining methods to discover factors that contribute to customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The critical incident method is used to construct an open-ended questionnaire to collect customer's positive and negative opinions toward the service provided. Valid and reliable text mining techniques are used to cluster significant text to help analyze incidents that customers care about. A case study of consumers riding the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit System (KMRT) was cased to evaluate the proposed analysis process. Based on dialogues collected from the open-ended questionnaires, the analysis process extracts key phrases related to consumer's best and worst service experiences, creates significant dialogue clusters, and derives meaningful trends, baselines, and interpretations of consumer satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The results of this case study can be used as a basis for building more complete analytical methods to understand consumer experiences and provide strategic feedback for service providers.Item type:Item, Liquid crystal alignment on the a-C : H films by Ar plasma ion immersion(2007-07-31) ;Chang, S. J. ;Wu, K. Y. ;Yang, Y. H. ;Hwang, J.Wu, Hsin-YingA plasma ion immersion treatment has been developed to enhance the liquid crystal (LC) alignment on the hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) layer in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) chamber. No LC alignment was observed for the a-C:H layer tilted at an angle of 0 degrees during the bombardment with plasma ions. The LC alignment occurs for the a-C:H layer tilted at an angle of 30 degrees or 60 degrees. Their pretilt angles (similar to 1.4 degrees) are approximately the same. The azimuthal anchoring strength is 1.98 x 10(-6) J/m(2) at a tilted angle of 30 degrees and 1.14 x 10(-4) J/m(2) at a tilted angle of 60 degrees. The mechanism for the LC alignment is attributed to the oblique incidence of ions within the matrix sheath of non-uniform thickness near the a-C: H surface under a negative pulse bias. The matrix sheath of non-uniform thickness is confirmed by the plasma density distribution in the ICP chamber and the X-ray photoemission spectra across the a-C:H layer. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Pre-coating by polyimide is not necessary. We use a diode-type sputter to treat the glass substrates with Ar ion-beam. The homeotropic alignments for nematic liquid crystals are achieved. The alignments are characterized by using the polarizing optical microscope and the conoscope. To find out the alignment mechanism, the studies by using super conducting quantum interference device and scanning probe microscopy are carried out. The surveyed surface morphology reveals that the films are amorphous and composed of nanoparticles with dimensions around 30 nm. The magnetization anisotropy of the sputtered magnetic films is analyzed. The polar anchoring strengths of the coated films with different thicknesses are measured and compared with their saturation magnetization. We deduce that the homeotropic alignment is achieved due to the orientation of the diamagnetic nematogenic molecules in the magnetic field caused by the gamma-Fe2O3 ferrimagnetic thin films. A simple model of alternatively distributed magnetic moments with opposite direction is proposed. The profile of magnetic field strength near the surface is then calculated to compare with the measured alignment strength.Item type:Item, Liquid crystal surface alignments by using ion beam sputtered magnetic thin films(2007-08-13) ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Pan, Ru-Pin ;電子物理學系Department of ElectrophysicsA method for liquid crystal surface alignment by using a one-step, ion beam bombardment of the glass substrates is demonstrated. Precoating by polyimide is not necessary. The authors show that the homeotropic alignment is achieved due to orientation of the diamagnetic nematogenic molecules by the magnetic field from the gamma-Fe2O3 ferrimagnetic thin films created on the substrates by ion beam bombardment. The film exhibits a high Curie temperature well above 300 K and a compensation temperature which is the typical feature of ferrimagnetism. This is a simple, noncontact, and reliable alignment method for liquid crystal devices. According to our design, the photonic crystal has specific photonic band gap (PBG) and can be utilized as a filter. The device is filled with nematic liquid crystal (NLC), MDA-00-3461. The refractive indices of NLC can be magnetically controlled by reorienting the NLC molecules. Consequently, the corresponding PBG and the filtering performance of the device are tunable. According to our experimental results, the low frequency boundary of PBG at 0.121 THz can be blue shifted by 6.17 GHz, and the high frequency boundary of PBG at 0.175 THz can be shifted to the blue by 11.04 GHz. As a tunable THz filter, the peak transmittance at 0.187 THz can be blue shifted by 3.66 GHz.Item type:Item, Mechanism in determining pretilt angle of liquid crystals aligned on fluorinated copolymer films(2009-08-07) ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Wang, Chih-Yu ;Lin, Chia-Jen ;Pan, Ru-PinLin, Song-ShiangThis work explores the surface treatment of copolymer materials with fluorinated carbonyl groups in various mole fractions by ultraviolet irradiation and ion-beam (IB) bombardment and its effect on liquid crystal (LC) surface alignments. X-ray photoemission spectroscopic analysis confirms that the content of the grafted CF(2) side chains dominates the pretilt angle. A significant increase in oxygen content is responsible for the increase in the polar surface energy during IB treatment. Finally, the polar component of the surface energy dominates the pretilt angle of the LCs.Item type:Item, Method of alignments of liquid crystal employing magnetic thin films(2010-05-06) ;Chao, Ru-PinWu, Hsin-YingAlignments of liquid crystal are obtained. The surface alignment with high pretilt angle is achieved by the UV treatment. The induced pretilt angle by ion beam treatment on this photo-reactive polymer film, however, is relatively small. Surface analyses by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and contact angle measurement are carried out to deduce the underlying mechanism. The result shows that the higher content of the fluorinated side-chain in polymer contribute to the lower surface energy and the higher pretilt angle. The atomic ratio of fluorine is largely decreased by ion beam treatments. The alignment uniformity and stability of the surfaces treated by linearly-polarized UV light and ion beam bombardment are also demonstrated.Item type:Item, The Anchoring Strength of Liquid Crystals on Polyimide Surfaces Treated by a Direct-Current Ion Beam Sputter(2011) ;Tai, Chao-Yu ;Wu, Hsin-Ying ;Huang, Meng-Chiou ;Pan, Ru-Pin電子物理學系In this work we report the alignment property of nematic liquid crystal with variable pretilt angle on surfaces treated by argon plasma. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) image indicates that nanoparticles are deposited on treated PI film. Groove-like aggregating structures are observed and the direction of aggregate tends to parallel to the ion beam direction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis confirms that -Fe2O3 nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of polyimide (PI) films. We also deduce that the maghemite is the main factor determining the pretilt angle while a competition exists between the homogeneous and homeotropic alignments.
