Item type:Item, A 24/60GHz Dual-Band Millimeter-Wave On-Chip Monopole Antenna Fabricated with a 0.13-mu m CMOS Technology(2009) ;Huang, Jie-Huang ;Wu, Jin-Wei ;Chiou, Yi-Lin ;Jou, Christina F.電信工程研究所A 24 / 60GHz dual-band millimeter-wave on-chip antenna fabricated in TSMC 0.13-mu m CMOS process is presented here. We design the feeding network by using the coplanar waveguide (CPW) structure. For the dual-band design, there are two major current paths to radiate. To avoid the harmonic frequency band of the low frequency-band, we add two strips to couple the harmonic frequency of the low frequency-band. Besides, the two strips let the higher frequency-band performance better. At this work, the simulator is based 3-D full-wave EM solver, Ansoft HFSS. The on-chip antenna size is 0.76 x 1.045 mm(2). The bandwidth of the lower band and higher is about 180MHz and 700MHz, respectively. The simulated gain is about -9dB for 24GHz and about 1 dB for 60GHzItem type:Item, A Compact Wideband Leaky-Wave Antenna With Etched Slot Elements and Tapered Structure(2010-07-01) ;Wu, Jin-Wei ;Jou, Christina F. ;Wang, Chien-Jen ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA compact wideband leaky-wave antenna (LWA) with etched slot elements and tapered structure is studied. The proposed antenna is composed of an asymmetric-fed multi-section tapered short leaky-wave antenna with two embedded slots and a ground plane with etched slot elements. Base on the concept of LWA, the asymmetric-fed is utilized to excite the first higher order mode. By etching slot elements on the ground plane, the current distribution of this antenna can be influenced to compact the width of conventional LWA. In order to achieve the impedance matching, this multi-section tapered short leaky-wave antenna is embedded with two rectangular slots. This technique not only improves the impedance matching but also suppresses the back lobe. According to the measured results, the impedance bandwidth achieves about 1.30 GHz for 7-dB return loss, which covers the range from 3.30 to 4.60 GHz, and the scanning angle of the measured main beam is about 36 degrees, which covers the range from 17 degrees to 53 degrees. This short LWA is only about 1.14 lambda(0) 3.4 GHz, and the back lobe can be suppressed by 7.5 dB at 4.3 GHz. Due to the etched slot elements on the ground plane, the frequency of the radiation angle is shifted to lower frequency by 750 MHz, which can compact the width of LWA by more than 20%.Item type:Item, A CPW-FED TWO-ARM SPIRAL SLOT ANTENNA(2009-01-01) ;Wang, Chien-Jen ;Wu, Jin-Wei ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA wideband coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed two-arm spiral slot antenna without a balun circuit is presented in this article. Phase progressions at arm ports are realized through the coplanar waveguide excitations. A detailed characterization of all antenna components and parameters is provided along with guidelines and reconimendations for broad bandwidth and small reflection. Variations of the impedance matching due to the turn numbers, the ground width separated between two neighboring turns and the slot width are tested and studied. The measured impedance bandwidth (if a S, I : 10 dB ranges from 1.03 to 8 GHz and covers most of the commercial wireless communication systems, such as DCS, PCS, IMT-2000, WLAN, Bluetooth, and HIPERLAN. The proposed loop-like antenna comprised of a monopole antenna, a sleeve strip connected with the ground plane and an L-shaped slit embedded in the ground plane. The C-like monopole generates a resonant mode for wideband impedance-bandwidth at the GPS and DCS bands, and the sleeve and the slit are capable of exciting two orthogonal electric fields with equal amplitude and phase difference of 90 degree for radiating circular polarization at 1.575 GHz. Both simulated and measured results are provided to validate the CP performance of the proposed antenna.Item type:Item, A Novel Short Leaky-Wave Antenna for Suppressing the Back Lobes(2009) ;Chiou, Yi-Lin ;Wu, Jin-Wei ;Huang, Jie-Huang ;Jou, Christina F.電信工程研究所A method to suppress the back lobes of a short leaky-wave antenna by two designed considerations is present in this paper. The right triangular end of the LWA is used to reduce the power reflected backwardly and the linked rectangular is guided the remainder power to the ground. With a short LWA length, the back lobes are suppressed successfully both in simulated and measured results at 4.6 and 4.7 GHz. The differences of the gains between the back lobes and main beams are 13.1 dBi and 7.2 dBi at 4.6 and 4.7 GHz, relatively in the measurements. In contrast to the conventional LWA, the proposed short LWA would rather be useful in scanning systems.Item type:Item, A NOVEL SHORT LENGTH HALF-WIDTH MICROSTRIP LEAKY WAVE ANTENNA WITH SUPPRESSED BACK LOBES(2009-12-01) ;Chiou, Yi-Lin ;Wu, Jin-Wei ;Huang, Jie-Huang ;Jou, Christina F.電信工程研究所A novel short half-width microstrip leaky wave antenna (MLWA) with suppressed back lobes is introduced. The design contains an oblique shape termination and a linked square metal with a grounded via hole. The oblique shape termination changes the direction of the reflected wave, and a linked square metal with a grounded via hole guides the remainder power of the reflected wave to the ground plane. As a result, the large back lobe of the short half-width MLWA could be suppressed. The measured results show that the proposed design (length of only 1 lambda(0)) improves the back lobes by 9 dB at 4.7 GHz compared with the original half-width MLWA. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The antenna module was fabricated on the same plane of the substrate, so that the circuit process and the position alignment could be simplified. The passband responses of the filter ranging below 2.6 GHz and from 5.0 to 6.0 GHz cover most of the commercial wireless communication systems. Simulated results are compared with measurements performed on the antenna module. This antenna can generate a broadband impedance-bandwidth from 2.17 to 8.47 GHz, and excite a left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) at 2.48 GHz and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) at 3.90 GHz. The measured 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths are about 140 MHz from 2.41 to 2.55 GHz approximately 5.6% with respect to the center frequency at 2.48 GHz and 900 MHz from 3.45 to 4.35 GHz approximately 23.1% with respect to the center frequency at 3.90 GHz.Item type:Item, Method of Suppressing the Side Lobe of a Tapered Short Leaky Wave Antenna(2009) ;Wu, Jin-Wei ;Wang, Chien-Jen ;Jou, Christina F. ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThis letter demonstrates a method for suppressing the side lobe of a tapered short leaky wave antenna (LWA). The proposed LWA contains a tapered microstrip radiator with a shorting pin and two rectangular slots. This design of the two slots and the shorting pin can interfere with the current distribution of tapered LWAs to suppress the radiation of the side lobe. A matching stub is added along the feeding line to achieve impedance matching. According to the measured results, the proposed design improves the side lobe level (SLL) from 0 dB for the tapered short LWA (about 1.5 lambda(0) at 4.5 GHz) to -6.13 dB for the proposed LWA at 6.4 GHz. The 7-dB impedance bandwidth is about 1.6 GHz, and the scanning range is about 43 degrees.Item type:Item, Novel Broadband Monopole Antennas With Dual-Band Circular Polarization(2009-04-01) ;Jou, Christina F. ;Wu, Jin-Wei ;Wang, Chien-Jen ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringNovel broadband monopole antenna designs with dual-band circular polarization (CP) are presented. The proposed antenna comprised of a ground plane embedded with an inverted-L slit, which is capable of generating a resonant mode for broadband impedance-bandwidth, and excites two orthogonal E vectors with equal amplitude and 90 degrees phase difference (PD) for radiating left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) at 2.5 GHz and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) at 3.4 GHz. A bevel is cut in the rectangular radiator to increase the impedance-bandwidth. The measured result of the impedance-bandwidth is about 4.46 GHz from 2.12 to 6.58 GHz; the 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths are about 150 MHz at the lower band (2.5 GHz) and 230 MHz at the upper band (3.4 GHz). Furthermore, embedding an I-shaped slit in the rectangular radiator and adding an I-shaped stub in the ground plane, the impedance-bandwidth can be further increased to 6.30 GHz (2.17-8.47 GHz), and the 3-dB AR-bandwidth at the upper band is greatly enhanced from 230 to 900 MHz.
