Item type:Item, Architecture of an embedded internet robot system controlled by brain waves(2006-06-15) ;Wu, Li-WeiLiao, Hsien-ChengThe present invention discloses an architecture of an embedded internet robot system controlled by brain waves, wherein the brain-computer interface and the internet robot system cooperate with the alertness level detection technology and the instruction translation technology, and thereby, the user can control a distal-end robot purely via consciousness activities and can interact with the environment as if there were an entity representing the user's consciousness appearing in the distal end. The seriously disabled person can regain his expressive ability via the present invention. Further, the present invention can also be applied to a multi-player interactive game system.Item type:Item, Association between Gastroenterological Malignancy and Diabetes Mellitus and Anti-Diabetic Therapy: A Nationwide, Population-Based Cohort Study(2015-05-15) ;Lin, Chien-Ming ;Huang, Hui-Ling ;Chu, Fang-Ying ;Fan, Hueng-ChuenChen, Hung-AnBackground The relationship between diabetes mellitus (DM) and cancer incidence has been evaluated in limited kinds of cancer. The effect of anti-diabetic therapy (ADT) on carcinogenesis among diabetic patients is also unclear. Materials and Methods Using population-based representative insurance claims data in Taiwan, 36,270 DM patients and 145,080 comparison subjects without DM were identified from claims from 2005 to 2010. The association between the top ten leading causes of cancer-related death in Taiwan and DM was evaluated. Whether ADT altered the risk of developing cancer was also investigated. Results Incidence of cancer at any site was significantly higher in patients with DM than in those without (p<0.001). The risk of carcinogenesis imparted by DM was greatest in gastroenterological malignancies (liver, pancreas, and colorectal cancer) as well as lung, breast and oral cancer (p<0.001). Among the oral types of ADT, metformin decreased the risk of lung and liver cancer, but had less effect on reducing the risk of colorectal cancer. alpha-glucosidase inhibitor decreased the risk of developing liver, colorectal, and breast cancer. Apart from intermediateacting insulin, rapid-acting, long-acting, and combination insulin treatment significantly reduced the overall cancer risk among all DM patients. In subgroup analysis, long-acting insulin treatment significantly decreased the risk of lung, liver, and colorectal cancer. Conclusion Our results supported the notion that pre-existing DM increases the incidence of gastroenterological cancer. ADT, especially metformin, alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, and long-acting insulin treatment, may protect patients with DM against these malignancies. It is crucial that oncologists should closely collaborate with endocrinologists to provide an optimal cancerspecific therapy and diabetic treatment to patients simultaneously with cancer and DM.Item type:Item, Brain-controlled robot agent: an EEG-based e Robot agent(2008) ;Wu, Li-Wei ;Liao, Hsien-Cheng ;Hu, Jwu-Sheng ;Lo, Pei-Chen電控工程研究所Purpose - This paper aims to present a novel embedded-internet robot system based on an internet robot agent and the brain-computer interface (BCI) scheme. Design/methodology/approach - A highly flexible and well-integrated embedded ethernet robot (e Robot) was designed with enhanced mobility. In the e Robot, a circuit core module called a tiny network bridge (TNB) is designed to reduce robotic system cost and increase its mobility and developmental flexibility. The TNB enables users to control e Robot motion via embedded ethernet technology. Through electroencephalogram (EEG) feedback training, the command translation unit (CTU) and alertness level detection unit (ADU) allow the e Robot to perform specific motions (for example, lying down or standing up) to reflect alertness levels of the user, and move forward, turn left or right following the user's command. Findings - After a short training period, subjects could achieve at least 70 percent accuracy in the CTU game testing. And the error rate of ADU, estimated from the results of classifying 496 labeled EEG epochs, was approximately 10.7 percent. Combining an encoding procedure, the commands issued from the CTU could prevent the robot from performing undesired actions. Originality/value - The e Robot could reflect some physiological human states and be controlled by users with our economical design and only two bipolar EEG channels adopted. Thus, users could make the EEG-based e Robot agent his or her representative. Based on the proposed EEG-based e Robot system, a robot with increased sophistication will be developed in the future for use by disabled patients.Item type:Item, Embedded network-controlled omni-directional motion system with optical flow based navigation(2007-06-28) ;Wu, Li-Wei ;Cheng, Jung-Hung ;Chang, Yung-JungHu, Jwu-ShengThe present invention discloses an embedded network-controlled omni-directional motion system with optical flow based navigation, wherein multiple motion units and at least one embedded network control system are installed to the body, and at least one optical flow sensor is installed on the ground-facing surface of the body. The movement of the body is driven by the motion units, and the motion unit has an omni-directional wheel and a motor device. The optical flow sensors detect the state of motion and create optical-flow detection data. The embedded network control system exchanges motion control instructions and optical-flow detection data with an external information-processing unit via a communication network. Further, the motion system of the present invention may also connect with peripheral control devices to increase the control convenience of the system. As the system of the present invention adopts an optical flow based navigation technology, the system of the present invention can be free from the influence of wheel sliding, environmental variation, and accumulated errors and can achieve accurate navigation.Item type:Item, Embedded system design for robots - Design concept, system architecture, and implementation(2008-06-01) ;Wu, Li-Wei ;Hu, Jwu-Sheng ;電控工程研究所Institute of Electrical and Control EngineeringItem type:Item, Gaussian mixture-sound field landmark model for robot localization(2005) ;Wu, Li-Wei ;Cheng, Chieh- Cheng ;Liu, Wei-Han ;Hu, Jwu-Sheng電控工程研究所This investigation proposes a robust robot localization system. The system contains a novel Gaussian Mixture-Sound Field Landmark Model (GM-SFLM) and can localize the robot accurately in noisy environments. Moreover, the proposed method depends nothing on the geometry relation between source locations and two microphones; it is able to cover both near-field and far-field problems. With this proposed GM-SFLM, we can localize robot in 2-dimentional indoor environments. Furthermore, we realize the GM-SFLM into a quadruped robot system composed of an eRobot and a robot agent by using embedded Ethernet technology. The experiment demonstrates that when the robot is completely non-line-of-sight, this system still provides high detection accuracy. Additionally, the proposed method has advantages of high accuracy, low-cost, easy to implement and environmental adaptation.Item type:Item, Gaussian mixture-sound field landmark model for robot localization applications(2007) ;Wu, Li-Wei ;Liu, Wei-Han ;Cheng, Chieh-Cheng ;Hu, Jwu-Sheng電控工程研究所This work proposes a novel Gaussian mixture-sound field landmark model for localization applications, based on the principle that sound fields produced by sources at different locations can be distinguished in terms of their statistical patterns. The experimental results indicate that two microphones are sufficient to differentiate among the patterns. The proposed method is robust against environmental noise and performs accurately in a complex environment. Moreover, it cannot only detect the non-line-of-sight locations when the direct path between the microphones and the location is blocked, but also can distinguish the locations aligned with respect to the line connecting the microphones. However, using only two microphones, these scenarios are difficult to handle by traditional direction-of-arrival or beamforming methods in microphone array research. The experiments were conducted on a quadruped robot platform with an eRobot agent using embedded Ethernet technology. Because of its high accuracy and low-cost, this method is suitable for robot localization in real environments. The experimental results also show that the proposed method with only two microphones outperforms the conventional multiple signal classification method (MUSIC) technique with six microphones at various signal-to-noise ratios.Item type:Item, Gender Differences in the Association between Moderate Alcohol Consumption and Hearing Threshold Shifts(2017-05-19) ;Lin, Yuan-Yung ;Chen, Hsin-Chien ;Lai, Wen-Sen ;Wu, Li-WeiWang, Chih-HungHearing loss is a global public health problem with a high prevalence, significantly impairing communication and leading to a decrease in the quality of life. The association between moderate alcohol consumption (MAC) and hearing impairment has been addressed in several studies with inconsistent results. The intent of our study is to clarify the correlation between MAC and the hearing threshold and further investigate the interplay between MAC and the hearing threshold categorized by gender. The study included 4,075 participants aged 20-69 years from the 1999-2004 data of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The associations among MAC, gender differences, and high-frequency and low-frequency hearing thresholds were analyzed. We found that current female drinkers with MAC tended to have lower hearing thresholds. There is a significant protective effect of MAC on hearing threshold shifts in the US adult population, especially in females. Our research was the first study to further indicate that there is a gender difference in the association between MAC and hearing impairment. In accordance with our results, if people drink, they should consume moderate rather than higher amounts, especially in women, which may result in a reduced risk of hearing loss.
