In general, the design of reconfigurabilities and impedance matching of reconfigurable antennas is individually achieved by different parts of antenna structure. However, designs of this kind increases switching mechanism complexity and the cost of antennas. This paper presents an innovative multi-eared antenna with frequency and polarization reconfigurability. The proposed ear-like structures can concurrently control and influence the resonant frequency, phase, and antenna impedance to simultaneously achieve the design of frequency reconfigurability, polarization reconfigurability, and impedance matching. The proposed antenna demonstrates that it can switch its frequency to 3.2 GHz, 3.35 GHz, or 3.5 GHz with linear polarization (LP); or it can switch its polarization to linear, left hand, or right hand circular polarization (LHCP/RHCP) at 3.35 GHz. The simulated and measured results of the proposed antenna indicate that it possesses good impedance bandwidth and axial ratio (AR). Hence, the proposed reconfigurable antenna is well suited to wireless communication applications.Item type:Item, A Multiband Quasi-Yagi Type Antenna(2010-02-01) ;Wu, Sung-Jung ;Kang, Cheng-Hung ;Chen, Keng-Hsien ;Tarng, Jenn-Hwan電信工程研究所A new design of multiband quasi-Yagi type antenna for 700 MHz band, GSM900, DCS1800, GPS, and Bluetooth/WLAN applications is presented. The proposed antenna has a low-profile 3D structure that consists of a bevel-edge feed structure and a metal plate with folded strip. The bevel edge feed structure achieves broadband impedance matching and the metal plate acts as the main radiator. Moreover, the folded strip not only extends the lower frequency band but also provides additional resonant frequency around 6 GHz. The final bandwidth covers from 3.1 GHz to 12 GHz. The proposed antenna shows the directional patterns with low backward radiation due to the patch-like structure and the ground plane also prevents from the proximity effects of human bodies. Furthermore, the simulated SAR values of the proposed antenna are lower than the values of omnidirectional disc planar monopole. These features demonstrate that the proposed antenna is suitable for WBAN application.Item type:Item, A Novel Three-Dimensional Hybrid Spatial Model for Wideband MIMO Channel in Indoor Environments(2010) ;Tarng, Jenn-Hwan ;Chang, Wei-Ju ;Wu, Sung-Jung ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringStudies of the effects of three-dimensional (3D) propagations on MIMO channel correlation and capacity have been presented in some literatures based on given 3D stochastic models of angle spectrum. However, it is only for narrowband MIMO channels and can not properly include specular reflections due to walls and/or the ground. In this letter, a hybrid spatial channel model, which combines a 3D ray-tracing based model for deterministic rays with a new 3D model for single-bounce randomly scattering rays, is proposed to investigate wideband spatial/polarized MIMO channel correlation. Based on the proposed model, the per-tap correlation among MIMO sub-channels is formulated and is validated by indoor measurements. From the comparison between measured and computed sub-channel correlations, it is found that our 3D model is more accurate than the 2D model, which only considers the propagation path in the horizontal plane, for both the co-polarized and the cross-polarized antenna cases. It is noted that the concept of effective scattering region is introduced in our model, which can increase computation efficiency without sacrifice the prediction accuracy.Item type:Item, A wideband, slotted bow-tie antenna with reconfigurable CPW-to-slotline transition for pattern diversity(2008-02-01) ;Wu, Sung-Jung ;Ma, Tzyh-Ghuang ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityWe propose a slotted bow-tie antenna with pattern reconfigurability. The antenna consists of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) input, a pair of reconfigurable CPW-to-slotline transitions, a pair of Vivaldi-shaped radiating tapered slots, and four PIN diodes for reconfigurability. With suitable arrangement of the bias network, the proposed antenna demonstrates reconfigurable radiation patterns in the frequency range from 3.5 to 6.5 GHz in three states: a broadside radiation with fairly omnidirectional pattern and two end-fire radiations whose mainbeams are directed to exactly opposite directions. The proposed antenna is investigated comprehensively with the help of the radiation patterns in the two principal cuts and Also the antenna gain responses versus frequencies. The simulation and measurement results reveal fairly good agreement and hence sustain the reconfigurability of the proposed design.Item type:Item, An Ultra-Wideband Millimeter Wave Aperture-coupled Patch Antenna Using a Comb-shaped Metasurface(2019-01-01) ;Hsu, Ching-Cheng ;Liu, Nai-Chen ;Wu, Sung-Jung ;Tarng, Jenn-Hwan交大名義發表In this study, a novel ultra-wideband aperture-coupled patch antenna using a comb-shaped metasurface (MS) was investigated for millimeter wave applications. The proposed antenna was fabricated with 4 layers of PCB and can be realized based on two parts, an aperture coupling feeding network, and a radiator. The coupling feeding network comprises a microstrip line with a radial stub and a coupling aperture (slot line). The radiator is a combination of a driven patch and a comb-shaped MS, which are made of uniform 4 x 4 metallic patch cells. The driven patch is used to provide good coupling performance that conveys the current to be distributed on the comb-shaped MS. The comb-shaped MS also functions as a wideband radiator that enhances the impedance bandwidth. To validate the design, a prototype operating on 28 GHz to 56 GHz was fabricated and measured. The simulated and measured results are in reasonable agreement. The prototype antenna with dimensions of 0.45 lambda(0) x lambda(0) x 0.45 lambda(0) x 0.16 lambda(0), has a 10 dB impedance bandwidth of 65%, and a gain range of 5-8 dBi.Item type:Item, Compact four bands hybrid filtering antenna using step impedance resonators and tuning stub transition structures(2018-06-13) ;Chen, Keng-Hsien ;Lo, Yu-Chen ;Lee, Yi-Shi ;Wu, Sung-JungTarng, Jenn-HwanA novel compact four bands hybrid filtering antenna composed of a hybrid radiator and a four bands bandpass filter is presented. The hybrid radiator is constructed using the micro-strip line fed, the square-ring and the T-stub near the ground plane. The proposed four bands bandpass filter is composed of two parts, one is two-step impedance resonators (SIRs) and the other is the tuning stub transition structure. With tuning stub transition structure, two SIRs effectively match to 50 hybrid radiator. Furthermore, the geometry of the proposed filter is U-shaped with the micro-strip fed around the hybrid radiator. The evolution of the hybrid radiator and the construction of the four bands bandpass filter using the two SIRs and the transitions are discussed in detail. The proposed filtering antenna not only possesses numerous operation bands with good band edge gain selectivity but also reduces the occupied size in the modern communication device. The overall size of the proposed filtering antenna is 33mmx36.4mmx0.508mm, and the operation frequencies are 1.8/2.45/3.5/5.2GHz bands for GSM1800/WLAN/WiMAX applications. The measured results agree with simulated outcomes.Item type:Item, High Directional Compact PIFAs for the Indoor Position Searching Scheme(2017-01-01) ;Liao, Shao-Chun ;Wu, Sung-Jung ;Chen, Keng-Hsien ;Tarng, Jenn-Hwan電信工程研究所High directional compact PIFAs for the indoor position searching scheme is presented. A notched band, located in the 5 GHz WLAN band, is created using a resonator at the center of a fork-shaped antenna. The resonator is composed of an open-looped resonator and two tapped lines. With the open-looped resonator, the antenna has a good band-notched performance and bandstop-filter-like response in the target band. A parametric study of the notched bandwidth is described that explored the antenna operating mechanism. Then, an equivalent circuit model illustrates the band-notched behaviors more clearly. The antenna input admittance calculated with the equivalent circuit model reasonably agrees with the HFSS simulated result. The proposed antenna also features flat gain frequency responses, small varied group delay and 15 to 35 dB gain suppression at the notched band. Accordingly, the band-notched antenna can effectively select target bands by adjusting these antenna parameters.
