Item type:Item, A PRECISION EXPERIMENT ON ELECTRONS, PHOTONS AND MUONS AT LHC(1993-02-01) ;AZIZ, T ;BOCK, R ;BRAUNSCHWEIG, W ;GEULIG, EHILGERS, KWe describe the upgrade of the L3 detector for running at LHC. The principle goals are the precise measurement of electrons, photons and muons.Item type:Item, AN ALTERNATIVE EXPLICIT CONSTRUCTION OF N-SOLITON SOLUTIONS IN 1+1 DIMENSIONS(1991-07-01) ;CHAU, LL ;SHAW, JC ;YEN, HC ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsUsing the special Riemann-problem technique of Zakharov et al. [Sov. Phys. JETP 47, 1017 (1978)], an explicit N-step Backlund transformation is derived for a class of 1 + 1-dimensional nonlinear evolution equations, thus providing an alternative explicit expression of their N-soliton solutions which no longer involves computations of the intermediate solutions, nor leaves any expansion of N x N determinants (and their differentiation) to be done.Item type:Item, CLASSICAL N=2 W-SUPERALGEBRAS FROM SUPERPSEUDODIFFERENTIAL OPERATORS(1995-01-07) ;HUANG, WJ ;SHAW, JC ;YEN, HC ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsWe study the supersymmetric Gelfand-Dickey algebras associated with the superpseudodifferential operators of positive, as well as negative, leading order. We show that, upon the usual constraint, these algebras contain the N = 2 super Virasoro algebra as a subalgebra when the leading order is odd. The decompositions of the coefficient functions into N = 1 primary fields are then obtained by covariantizing the superpseudodifferential operators. We discuss the problem of identifying N = 2 supermultiplets and work out a couple of supermultiplets by explicit computations.Item type:Item, MATRIX MODELS AT FINITE-N AND THE KP HIERARCHY(1992-08-01) ;SHAW, JC ;TU, MH ;YEN, HC ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsWe give an alternative proof that the partition function Z(n)(t(l)) of the hermitian one-matrix model at finite N is a particular Wronskian type tau-function of the KP hierarchy, and is related to the orthogonal polynomials P(n)(lambda, t) by P(n)(lambda, t) = lambda(n)Z(n)(t(l) + l-1-lambda(-l))/Z(n)(t(l)). We also derive a bilinear relation for the Baker-Akhiezer function of the matrix model, generalizing the bilinear identity of the KP hierarchy.Item type:Item, MIURA AND BACKLUND-TRANSFORMATIONS FOR HIERARCHIES OF INTEGRABLE EQUATIONS(1993-12-01) ;SHAW, JC ;YEN, HC ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsWe present a further study on the Miura and Backlund transformations for the Sato-type hierarchies of integrable equations in the formulation of Konopelchenko and Oevel. We identify the elementary Miura and Backlund transformations, and apply them to recover, in a simple and unified fashion, various types of solutions to the 2+1 dimensional KP and mKP equations.Item type:Item, N-SOLITON-TYPE SOLUTIONS OF SU(2) SELF-DUALITY YANG-MILLS EQUATIONS IN VARIOUS SPACES AND THEIR BACKLUND-TRANSFORMATIONS(1994-11-07) ;CHAU, LL ;SHAW, JC ;YEN, HC ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsWe show that Getmanov's N-soliton-type solutions in the self-duality Yang-Mills (SDYM) equations in the (+---)-signatured M4-space can be derived in a unified way similar to that of deriving 't Hooft's instanton solutions in the (++++)-signatured E4-space. Further, we show that such N-soliton-type solutions can also be constructed for the SDYM equations in the (+-+-)-signatured real D4-space.Item type:Item, SOLVING THE KP HIERARCHY BY GAUGE TRANSFORMATIONS(1992-10-01) ;CHAU, LL ;SHAW, JC ;YEN, HC ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsWe show that it is convenient to use "gauge" transformations (sometimes called explicit Backlund transformations) to generate new solutions for the KP hierarchy. Two particular kinds of gauge transformation operators, constructed out of the initial wave functions, are of fundamental importance in this approach. Through such gauge transformations, a very simple formula for the tau-function is obtained, encompassing and unifying all kinds of existing solutions. The corresponding free fermion representation and Baker functions for the new tau function can also be constructed.Item type:Item, THE 2-MATRIX MODEL AT FINITE N AND THE 2D TODA HIERARCHY(1993-10-01) ;TU, MH ;SHAW, JC ;YEN, HC ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsWe give a rigorous proof that the partition function of the standard hermitian two-matrix model at finite N is a tau-function of the 2d Toda hierarchy. The proof is based on the establishment of a characteristic bilinear relation for the associated Baker-Akhiezer functions, which we have explicitly constructed in terms of the orthogonal polynomials of the matrix model.
