Item type:Item, A comparison of innovation policy in the smart grid industry across the pacific: China and the USA(2013-06-01) ;Lin, Chen-Chun ;Yang, Chia-Han ;Shyua, Joseph Z. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyUtilities are increasing their investment in smart grid technologies because of the rising demand for electricity, the aging transmission and distribution infrastructure in developed countries and the need for real-time visibility of energy supply and demand to optimize service reliability and cost. Government policies are contributing to this rising investment in the smart grid in many countries around the globe. Using Rothwell and Zegveld's innovation policy framework as a starting point, this paper compares innovation policy in smart grids across the Pacific; specifically, China and the USA. This research describes the policy tools used by both countries and presents results that indicate national preferences for innovation policy that differ in the ways in which they are linked with the state of the power system. China has preferred to use "supply-side policy," which focuses on "public enterprise, scientific and technical development and legal regulation." The USA has preferred to use "environmental-side policy," which focuses on "scientific and technical development, financial, political and public enterprise." This paper also describes in detail a number of innovation policies being pursued in the smart grid industry in both China and the USA. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Particularly, an empirical competition case between Southern and Central Taiwan Science Park (STSP and CTSP) will be adopted in this study to demonstrate the validity of the dynamic approach. The results reveal that the competitive relationship between STSP and CSTP may be a predator-prey interaction type. The existence of STSP and its investment growth will be a positive assistance for developing the latter CTSP area. Contrarily, the growth of CTSP will probably compete with the resource of STSP and inhibit the sustained growth of STSP. In addition, there do not exist an equilibrium point in the competition relationship of these two clusters recently, which the STSP and CTSP area could coexist with a sustained growth in this current short-term stage.Item type:Item, A model analysis of industrial specialization for innovation intensive service: Case of Telematies service industry(2008) ;Yang, Chia-Han ;Chen, Jou-Chen ;Shyu, Joseph Z. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis research focuses on analyzing the specialization models of service industry. Particularly, a correlation between innovation types and specialization strategies will be constructed for the analysis of industrial specialization enabled by the IIS (innovation intensive service) platform model. A case study of Taiwan's Telematics service industry is also used in this research to demonstrate the validity of this specialization model. The IIS platform framework depicts the inter-linkages among six innovation types and eight specialization strategies in accordance with the requirements of value activities and externalities. This model connects firm's core competence, value activities, externalities, and specialization strategy, allowing analysis of needed integration of value activities and externalities based on pre-determined specialization strategy. Results of the empirical study reveal that the optimal specialization strategies of Taiwan's Telematics service industry is the marketing brand & channels specialization based on market innovation, and the network & platform operations specialization based on structural innovation.Item type:Item, A Symbiosis Model for New Product Development through Open Innovation Process(2008) ;Yang, Chia-Han ;Shyu, Joseph Z. ;Li, Yiming ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis research aims to propose a symbiosis model for new product development based on the open innovation concept. In the meanwhile, scientific & technical and information are the factors intensely affected by other policies.Item type:Item, Cross-national and cross-industrial comparison of two strategy approaches for global industrial evolution(2009-01-01) ;Yang, Chia-Han ;Shyu, Joseph Z. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis research focuses on analyzing the two prime science and technology (S&T) strategy approaches for industrial evolution based on the concept of S&T gap, namely, the optimist and pragmatist approaches. Particularly. the cases of global IC, pharmaceutical, and computer industries, are used to make cross-national and cross-industrial comparison of these two approaches. The optimist approach is developed based on the product life cycle theory which envisions technology transcending everyday limitations. With this perspective, market demand is the most critical factor in selecting the S&T strategy approaches. The pragmatist approach is formed based on the new trade theory which recognizes the power of science and technology but seeks to fit it into structures that already exist, and government must manage resources pouring into science and technology. Case studies of global IC, pharmaceutical, and computer industries during the 2nd half of the 20th century are used as research targets to reflect policy impacts on the technological evolution. The results of this study reveal that, strategy approaches have to be adapted and turned to the specific stage, technology level, and market segment that have been selected for intervention. This result of comparison also offers the criteria of strategy selection for developing different industry based on distinct national base. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Particularly, a service approach of innovation strategy, namely, the intermediary platform, is used as an analytical model to explain the business operation of innovation intermediaries and their interaction with knowledge clusters in regional innovation system. In this model, the concepts of industrial environment and technological system were adopted to represent the building blocks of knowledge cluster. Accordingly, the correlation between the firm-level operational resources of innovation intermediaries and industrial environment as well as technological system, would be constructed to discuss the necessary support of sectoral innovation system for fostering the development of innovation intermediaries The result reveals that the regional innovation intermediaries could integrate their value activities and externalities effectively with the support of specific industrial environment and technological system, thereby facilitating the knowledge spillover and creating the regional knowledge capabilities in the sectoral innovation system.Item type:Item, Innovative strategies of Taiwanese firms in response to the regional economic development(2007) ;Yang, Chia-Han ;Chang, Ting ;Shyu, Joseph Z. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis paper aims at studying strategic imperatives of Taiwanese firms amid the trend of regional economic development in China enabled by the era of globalization. In particular, high-tech firms operating at different levels of technology will face different pressure to change, as technology posts the central spot in highly intensive competition. An analytical model of industrial innovation resource is used in this research to evaluate high-tech firms at different levels of technology including cognitive, coordinative, and cooperative technology, for proposing the firm-level innovative strategies. Globalization and proliferation of product knowledge in knowledge-based economy demands a new approach for industrial specialization under the regional economic development, where integration of systems knowledge is pivotal in controlling information trafficking and management. With this perspective, an unprecedented new policy is likely to be exercised based on firm-driven in lieu of traditional government-driven growth. Secondly, consumption-based economic development will take a greater priority over investment-oriented growth due to the role change of government in China from a planner to a facilitator in this market-driven economy. Under this interpretation, we constructed an analytical model of industrial innovation resource to depict the inter-linkages between three levels of technology and eight industrial innovation resources, thereby evaluating the influences of regional economy for different high-tech firms. The results of this research show that cognitive technology in a mature market will experience the greatest challenge, whereas Taiwanese firms intends to use emergent technology to gain product leadership requires to work close with their counterparts in China to gain speed and cost advantages. This result is of great academic and practical importance. Not only does it provide an analytical anatomy of innovative strategies in different life cycle stages, it also makes firm-level suggestions for competing in regional economy.Item type:Item, Public Innomediary as Driver for Open Innovation in National Innovation System(2009) ;Yang, Chia-Han ;Li, Chen-Hsing ;Shyu, Joseph Z. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis research aims to analyze the role of public innomediaries as driver for fostering technology diffusion through open innovation in national innovation system.
