Item type:Item, A macro analysis of Taiwan's international tourist hotel industry by using the sliding window method(2006-09-01) ;Yang, Chyan ;Lu, Wen-Min ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementThis paper proposes an alternative data envelopment analysis for assessing the operational performance of 46 international tourist hotels (ITHs) in Taiwan over the period 1997-2002. This study is the first research that combines the discriminant power of a slack-based measure and the dynamic view of window analysis in applying DEA. It is shown that the trend of mean managerial efficiency is increasing, whereas the variation converges. Most ITHs operate at decreasing returns to scale, indicating that ITHs are facing a highly competitive environment. Taiwan's 921 earthquake in 1999, the 911 incident in 2001, and the compulsory government subsidies all play key roles which affect the ITHs' managerial performance for different operating characteristics in the short term. Results also indicate that differences in management style do have a very significant influence upon ITHs' performance over time (1997-2002). Finally, the efficiency/profitability matrix of ITHs is further examined.Item type:Item, A multicriteria analysis on the strategies to open Taiwan's mobile virtual network operators services(2007-03-01) ;Fu, Guey Lan ;Yang, Chyan ;Tzeng, Gwo Hshiung ;經營管理研究所科技管理研究所This study investigates the trends followed by MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) in the last three years and analyzes the strategies that can contribute to the success of Taiwan's telecommunications industry and marketing. We apply the method and concept of PATTERN (Planning Assistance Through Technical Evaluation of Relevance Number) to establish relevant systems for searching out the key successful factors of strategies to attract MVNOs. We also use the fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method for analyzing the defferent preference of a decision group in the criteria weights and for ranking the alternatives in a fuzzy environment in order to provide a strategy scheme. These results provide a reference to assist telecommunications operators, 3G license owners, potential MVNOs, and equipment manufacturers when working out business plans.Item type:Item, A PROCESS-BASED KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY IN TAIWAN(2010-10-01) ;Lee, Chi-Lung ;Lu, Hsi-Peng ;Yang, Chyan ;Hou, Huei-Tse交大名義發表Knowledge management systems, or KMSs, have been widely adopted in business organizations, yet little research exists on the actual integration of the knowledge management model and the application of KMSs in secondary schools. In the present study, the common difficulties and limitations regarding the implementation of knowledge management into schools' organizational cultures are reviewed and discussed. Furthermore, relevant theories of knowledge management models are summarized, and a model of process-based knowledge management appropriate for schools is proposed. Based on the proposed model, this study applied a low-cost, open-source software development framework to establish a process-based knowledge management system for schools, or PKMSS. We conducted a 30-day empirical observation and survey at a secondary school in Taiwan. This case study used methods including a satisfaction survey, qualitative content analysis of knowledge discussion, and unstructured interviews to explore the progress, performance, and limitations of PKMSS implementation. It was determined that PKMSS has some value in promoting schools' knowledge management. It not only facilitates the externalization and combination of knowledge and effectively keeps the objectives of knowledge sharing in focus, but it also promotes inter-member interactions. However, this study also found certain restrictions in terms of the classification of knowledge content and system functions. Based on the above findings, we propose relevant suggestions as references for the evaluation and introduction of a KMS in educational organizations.Item type:Item, A structural equation model for analyzing the impact of ERP on SCM(2010-01-01) ;Su, Yi-fen ;Yang, Chyan ;經營管理研究所 ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Institute of Business and ManagementEnterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management (SCM) represent important information technology investment options for operation or IT managers, and have been acclaimed in the practitioner and academic literature for their potential to improve business performance. The purpose of this article is to provide further insights into the adoption of ERP systems and the impacts on firm competence in SCM. We propose a model featuring ERP benefits to firm competences in supply chain management. We also hypothesize that three constructs of ERP benefits positively impact firm competences in SCM. To clarify the relationships among these constructs, structural equation model (SEM) is conducted to examine the model fit and nine hypotheses. The SEM results clearly demonstrate that there exist close interrelations among the benefits of implementing ERP systems and firm competences in SCM. The data from Taiwanese IT firms was collected through interviewing of experts and surveys. The results provide empirical evidence that the beneficial impacts of ERP on the supply chain do lead to better overall SCM competence. That evidence confirms that operational benefits, business process and management benefits, and strategic IT planning benefits of ERP in turn enhance firm competences of SCM in operational process integration, customer and relationship integration, and planning and control process integration. Design/methodology/approach - The structure, function, and process of a viable organization were discussed which provided a basis to construct a knowledge management (KM) framework and demonstrate knowledge structure in a knowledge-based organization. Based on systems view and viable systems model (VSM), a range of recently published KM practices were reviewed to position various knowledge content. Findings - This study proposed a viable systems framework for organizational KM based on the VSM of Beer. Using the viable systems framework, organizational knowledge can be classified into four categories. Knowledge content was articulated based on the systems view. Thus, knowledge structure of various management hierarchies can be captured. Originality/value - The result contributes to the practice of knowledge executive by supporting the diagnosis and design of an effective knowledge-based organization. The framework also provides a basis for future empirical studies on the relationships between KM strategies and organizational effectiveness. A specific KM strategy exists that can maximize the effectiveness of each of the four types of knowledge.Item type:Item, An authoring tool and extendable production architecture for interactive television services(2006) ;Hsu, Kuo-Shu ;Yang, Chyan ;Chao, T. -H. steve ;管理學院College of ManagementInteractive TV program is made possible by digital television standards. MHP, Multimedia Home Platform, is an open standard from DVB for creating interactive content application. MHP provides a rich set of application programming interface for designer to create various kinds of services by direct Java programming. In this paper, we will describe an innovative authoring tool for enhancing interactive TV service creation environments. A layered scene-and-shot model has been created to represent the interactive services content relationship and store in XML form. Individual object is mapped to the HA Vi user interface component and associated action so that it could response to the TV user\'s remote control action. With online Java code generation and compilation, the interactive service can be easily transformed into MHP Xlet application. This approach creates a flexible platform architecture that can be used to add new features, such as digital rights management and personal video recording, to the broadcast service(1).Item type:Item, An Integrated Home Financial Investment Learning Environment Applying Cloud Computing in Social Network Analysis(2011) ;Wen, Mao-Ping ;Lin, Hsio-Yi ;Chen, An-Pin ;Yang, Chyan資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所This paper tried to apply cloud computing technology in social network analysis for a comprehensive home financial learning environment that individual investors may use as a reference in establishing web-based learning and investment platforms. In addition to analyzing a homogeneous social network such as IHFILE, we also propose direction of how cloud computing can be performed on a social network analysis as our future work.Item type:Item, An intellectual structure of activity-based costing: a co-citation analysis(2014) ;Kuo, Hsiu-Kuei ;Yang, Chyan ;運輸與物流管理系 註:原交通所+運管所 ;經營管理研究所Department of Transportation and Logistics ManagementPurpose - The purpose of this paper is to show that by exploring the intellectual structure of activity-based costing (ABC) based on the citation database of Google Scholar, one can understand the evolution and core ideas of the ABC discipline. Design/methodology/approach - This study employs the document co-citation method to model the intellectual structure of ABC between 1988 and 2008. After an initial co-citation analysis of the condition-limited literature set to find the relationships between core articles, this study further implements multivariate statistical techniques to construct representations for the ABC intellectual structure. Findings - A total of four important subjects chronologically provide a panoramic view of the evolution of ABC. This study finds some dimensions of the results to be in accordance with prior research, but further achieves insights into the core ideas underpinning the ABC discipline. It demonstrates the validity of this study conducting a co-citation analysis based on the citation data of Google Scholar. Research limitations/implications - The classification, core articles, and evolution of the ABC literature published in the past two decades benefit academic researchers conducting future studies that build systematically on prior research. Practical implications - The intellectual structure of the ABC discipline explains and predicts the stages of ABC implementation's life cycle. For the accounting profession, this helps a consultant/practitioner in sub-fields of the ABC domain to quickly and easily enlarge the coverage and viewpoints or perspectives within his/her cluster of interest and to jointly consider the successful factors of implementing ABC in an organization. Originality/value - The empirical feasibility of using digitally archival information to model an intellectual structure of ABC is attained; and the intellectual structure and its various representations provide researchers, consultants, and practitioners with a macroscopic and dynamic view of the ABC discipline.Item type:Item, Assessing how service quality, airline image and customer value affect the intentions of passengers regarding low cost carriers(2012-05-01) ;Yang, Keng-Chieh ;Hsieh, Tsui-Chuan ;Li, Hendrik ;Yang, Chyan資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所This paper uses simple structural equation modelling to investigate relationships between service quality, airline image, customer value and behavioural intentions for passengers to fly on low cost carriers. In particular it focuses on flier's expectations of the types of services that they can enjoy. The analysis indicates that service quality has a significant positive effect on customer value, airline image and behavioural intentions, but that airline image does not itself significantly influence behavioural intentions. Design/methodology/approach - The study employed a survey method and data were collected from 250 companies in Taiwan's glass industry. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) technology, it specified the measurement properties of survey instrument such as reliabilities and validities and then identified causal relation among latent constructs to examine causal effects of hypotheses testing. Findings - The results show that a firm's agility capability and its network structure are a,critical competitive strategy source of firm performance. Moreover, network structure also partially mediates the impact of enterprise agility on firm performance. Research limitations/implications - Because the data were collected from a single industry and firm performance is evaluated by subjective managerial assessments, further research may be necessary by using the data involving multiple industries with objective performance indices for more meaningful and generalized results. Practical implications - The findings confirm the importance of enterprise agility for contemporary firms in today's dynamic business environment. By reinforcing enterprise agility, firms could react better to unpredictable changes. In addition, firms also are suggested to put more effort into developing and maintaining their network structures, both as repositories of external resources and as boosters of enterprise agility. Originality/value - The paper provides evidence regarding the impact of enterprise agility and network structure on firm performance."Item type:Item, Can organizational knowledge capabilities affect knowledge sharing behavior?(2007) ;Yang, Chyan ;Chen, Liang-Chu ;經營管理研究所 ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Institute of Business and ManagementRecent concerns about the issue of knowledge management (KM) within an organization have accentuated the need for more efficient and effective knowledge sharing - that is, knowledge sharing plays an increasingly significant role in determining the outcomes of KM. Most scholars explore this issue from the economic perspective, while only a few research studies have focussed on organizational capabilities. Drawing from the theories of resource-based view and KM, this study aims to investigate the relationship between organizational knowledge capabilities (OKC) and knowledge sharing (KS). Using regression analysis with data from questionnaires collected in different industries with a valid response rate of 62.4%, the results show that OKC have a positive association with KS. Technical, structural, and human knowledge capabilities are significant for organizational knowledge sharing. Moreover, the effects of implementing KM on OKC and KS are also significant.Item type:Item, Comparing Public and Private Employees' Job Satisfaction and Turnover(2012-09-01) ;Wang, Yau-De ;Yang, Chyan ;Wang, Kuei-Ying ;管理科學系經營管理研究所This study compares the job satisfaction and turnover intentions of private- and public-sector employees in Taiwan. Questionnaires were used to collect data from employees of various private enterprises and public organizations. The results show that the job satisfaction and turnover intentions of public employees are different from those of private employees'. First, public employees in Taiwan have lower extrinsic job satisfaction and lower turnover intentions compared to their counterparts in the private sector. Second, the negative relationship between extrinsic job satisfaction and turnover intention is weaker in public than in private employees. To enhance employee motivation, public-sector managers in Taiwan should improve their employees' extrinsic job satisfaction and help unsatisfied employees transfer to jobs they find more satisfying. In addition, they may wish to examine if turnover rate at their organizations is too low to support healthy workforce mobility.Item type:Item, Comparison of Cross-tour Traveling Service Satisfaction: A Correspondence-cluster Graphical Representation of Doubled Data Matrix(2008) ;Tseng, Shun-Yao ;Yang, Chyan ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementThe correspondence analysis and correspondence cluster analysis are useful and can be more clear and practical in the field of travel satisfaction research for the case of categorical criteria values. We demonstrate this claim by performing three tasks: (1) to transform the Likert scaling data matrix to binary data matrix, then double the binary data matrix, (2) the complementary use of correspondence analysis and (3) correspondence cluster analysis will be performed on the doubled binary data matrix. A simultaneous graphical representation of the relationship between multi-tour and service quality can be obtained. This diagram, the correspondence cluster dendrogram, is helpful to the decision maker in understanding the competitive advantage of different tours and in improving their travel service quality.Item type:Item, CORPORATE GOVERNANCE REFORM IN TAIWAN Could the Independent Director System Be an Effective Remedy?(2008-09-01) ;Liu, John S. ;Yang, Chyan ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementAt the forefront of corporate governance reform in Taiwan is establishment of the independent director system. China was one of the main options for these outward investments, with its huge and rapidly growing market, plentiful, low-cost labour and vast territory. The literature on foreign direct investment has analysed the location strategies of multinational enterprises across national borders, but there have been fewer studies of location decisions by foreign investors within the borders of a single country. We examine how companies determine which location offers the best opportunity to establish an assembly-type manufacturing site in China. We surveyed 17 Taiwanese enterprises that have established this kind of manufacturing base in China, and found that the major factors influencing location selection are economics, politics, the cluster effect and bureaucratic efficiency. It was found that the eastern region, which includes Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, was considered better for establishing manufacturing bases than other regions.Item type:Item, Developing and evaluating an IT specification extraction system(2006) ;Yang, Chyan ;Chen, Liang-Chu ;Peng, Chun-Yen ;經營管理研究所資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Purpose - This paper seeks to establish an extraction system for an information technology (IT) product specification named ITSIES which combines the natural language process (NLP) with the ontology concept and also to evaluate the system's effectiveness in advance. Design/methodology/approach - The development of the system is based on a prototype design and performance validation. This study adopts four classes of IT specification (PC, Unix server, Monitor, and Printer) that follow IBM's and HP's product lines as the baseline information in order to construct the extraction system in GATE (General Architecture for Text Engineering) tools and to examine the IT product specification with other brands and patterns. Additionally indices are adopted such as precision, recall, and F-measure as the matrices for evaluating system performance. Findings - The performance shows that the average recall, precision, and F-measure are all over 90 per cent, revealing that the JAPE (Java Annotation Patterns Engine) grammar rules in the IT domain are reasonably good and generally in line with expectations. Originality/value - The paper proposes an integrative framework to examine IT product specification information and demonstrates that the system is effective for IT application.Item type:Item, DO ONLINE LEARNING PATTERNS EXHIBIT REGIONAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC DIFFERENCES?(2012-01-01) ;Hsieh, Tsui-Chuan ;Yang, Chyan ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and FinanceThis paper used a multi-level latent class model to evaluate whether online learning patterns exhibit regional differences and demographics. This study discovered that the Internet learning pattern consists of five segments, and the region of Taiwan is divided into two segments and further found that both the user and the regional segments are highly interpretable. The individual segments are dictated by demographic variables, such as age and gender. For instance, younger people were good at employing Internet services; those 21-30 years old adopted e-learning, browsed blogs, and enjoyed the Internet more than others; and females preferred e-learning applications more than males did. On the other hand, the regional segments are dictated by the individual segments. For instance, the service area segment comprised a higher proportion of members who were good at online learning applications. The agricultural area segment made up a higher proportion of members who were traditional users. The findings provide both product or service providers/vendors and curriculum designers with an applicable guideline for developing service strategies for better matches and higher service satisfaction between the curriculum and the users' needs.Item type:Item, Does intellectual capital matter? Assessing the profitability and marketability of IC design companies(2012-10-01) ;Kuo, Mei-Huan ;Yang, Chyan ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and FinanceUnder a highly competitive market and a dynamic industrial environment, how to evaluate and enhance an integrated circuit (IC) design company's good performance is important. This paper develops a two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) combined intellectual capital theory through financial and non-financial data to evaluate a performance process on the IC design company. It adopts a new slacks-based measure (SBM) to obtain a more accurate performance estimation and rank between companies. This paper further uses the Simar and Wilson procedure with a truncated regression to explore the impact of intellectual capital variables on performance and competitive advantage. From the study we suggest to the company in how to enhance precisely its performance to create company value and success.Item type:Item, Does Job Standardization Increase Organizational Citizenship Behavior?(2009-09-01) ;Chen, Li-Chan ;Niu, Han-Jen ;Wang, Yau-De ;Yang, ChyanTsaur, Sheng-HshiungOrganizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is of key importance in the workplace. Researchers have discussed numerous motivation factors affecting OCB, but they have not examined the relative contributions of job standardization to OCB. This article describes an empirical study that examined the relationship between job standardization and OCB in the hospitality sector. Regression analysis of survey data from 214 hotel employees supported the relationship between job standardization and OCB. ANOVA analysis revealed that high degrees of job standardization indicate a higher level of OCB.
