Item type:Item, A layer-integrated approach for shallow water free-surface flow computation(2008-12-01) ;Hung, Meng-Chi ;Hsieh, Te-Yung ;Tsai, Tung-Lin ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang土木工程學系A novel semi-three-dimensional (semi-3D) layer-integrated approach was proposed in this study for the shallow water free-surface flow computation. A quadratic shape function proposed to approximate the velocity distribution in the layer ensures the continuity of velocities and shear stresses at interfaces. To discretize the governing equations, the finite volume formulation with staggered grid is used. As the two-dimensional (2D) sub-model for locating the free surface is not needed in this approach, the computational time consumption has been dramatically reduced. The model was verified through the wind-induced circulation in a closed basin by comparing the velocity profiles to the analytical solution. The formation of the velocity profiles due to change of viscosity distribution and the evolution process of water surface slope were also investigated. Further, the eddy viscosity is estimated by a function related to discharge, water depth, and Manning's n under the assumption of parabolic distribution of longitudinal velocity along the vertical direction for open channel flows. Two designed hypothetical cases were conducted to examine the proposed eddy viscosity relation and to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed model. Omitting vertical spatial variation of soil and hydraulic properties within each layer, a three-dimensional solute transport can be simplified as a quasi-three-dimensional solute transport which couples a horizontal two-dimensional simulation and a vertical one-dimensional computation. The finite analytic numerical method was used to discretize the derived two-dimensional governing equation. A quadratic function was used to approximate the vertical one-dimensional concentration distribution in the layer to ensure the continuity of concentration and flux at the interface between the adjacent layers. By integration over each layer, a set of system of equations can be generated for a single column of vertical cells and solved numerically to give the vertical solute concentration profile. The solute concentration field was then obtained by solving all columns of vertical cells to achieve convergence with the iterative solution procedure. The proposed model was verified through examples from the published literatures including four verifications in terms of analytical and experimental cases. Comparison of simulation results indicates that the proposed model satisfies the solute concentration profiles obtained from experiments in time and space.Item type:Item, An analytical method of stage-fall-discharge rating(2008-07-30) ;Wu, Reuy-Bean ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringThis paper presents an analytical method for establishing a stage-fall-discharge rating using hydraulic performance graphs (HPG). The rating curves derived from the HPG are used as the basis to establish the functional relation of stage, fall and discharge through regression analysis following the USGS procedure. In doing so, the conventional trial-and-error process can be avoided and the associated uncertainties involved may be reduced. For illustration, the proposed analytical method is applied to establish stage-fall-discharge relations for the Keelung River in northern Taiwan to examine its accuracy and applicability in an actual river. Based on the data extracted from the HPG for the Keelung River, one can establish a stage-fall-discharge relation that is more accurate than the one obtained by the conventionally used relation. Furthermore, the discharges obtained from the proposed rating method are verified through backwater analysis for measured high water level events. The results indicate that the analytical stage-fall-discharge rating method is capable of circumventing the shortcomings of those based on single-station data and, consequently, enhancing the reliability of flood estimation and forecasting. Since the modified storage function runoff has seven parameter, a parameter-calibration method, which combines the genetic algorithm with the least square criterion. For model calibration and validation, twenty rainfall-runoff events (1968-2005) recorded at Wudu gage in Keelung River in northern Taiwan were used in the study. The results of model validation reveal that the modified storage function runoff model not only produces the realistic storage-discharge relationship, but also provides a good estimation of the runoff. An automatic monitoring system was installed to record channel water levels, and the displacement and pore water pressure variations inside the riverbank revetments. The results show that the variations of water levels and pore water pressure were almost at the same pace, which indicates the drainage system inside the revetments work well. The flow-induced lateral shear stress and safety factor (S.F.) of river embankments from numerical simulations are the two indexes used to assess the vulnerability of the riverbank revetments. By using the 610 flood and Typhoon Kong-Ray as test cases, the combined hydrodynamic and revetment stability model is able to indicate if riverbank revetments are in danger during the storm or typhoon events. In the observational site, the damages of the revetments in the 610 flood may be due to the exceedance of the flow-induced shear stress over the critical resistance shear stress of the revetments. Overall, this study show the combined hydrodynamic and revetment stability model is a useful non-engineering method on assessing stability of riverbank revetments during storm or typhoon events.Item type:Item, Conjunction effect of stream water level and groundwater flow for riverbank stability analysis(2011-02-01) ;Chiang, Shih-Wei ;Tsai, Tung-Lin ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;防災與水環境研究中心Disaster Prevention and Water Environment Research CenterVariations in pore-water pressure determined by the groundwater table within a riverbank have been investigated and recognized as an essential factor in determining riverbank stability with respect to mass failure. However, the effect of pore-water pressure is taken into account for most of the existing riverbank stability models under some simplified assumptions, and the limitations of predicting ability may arise. To avoid the unrealistic estimation of pore-water pressure distribution, the new approach proposed here is to couple riverbank stability with groundwater flow modeling, and apply this to tackle the conjunction effect between river stage and groundwater table. Moreover, riverbank material characteristics and the influence of infiltration can be taken into consideration via groundwater flow modeling. Two hypothetical examples, stage rising and stage falling, are used to investigate the capabilities of the present study and two representative methods. The simulated results show that riverbank failure is triggered particularly during the falling stage, which has been pointed out by other researchers as well. Furthermore, the riverbank material characteristics predominantly control the occurrence of failure and should be considered regarding assessment of riverbank stability. Additionally, the effects of parameters indicate that riverbanks with soil properties of low permeability or high specific yield with great infiltration intensity during the falling stage have a tendency to riverbank failure.Item type:Item, Effect of Rainfall, Runoff and Infiltration Processes on the Stability of Footslopes(2020-05-01) ;Chen, Hung-En ;Chiu, Yen-Yu ;Tsai, Tung-Lin ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang防災與水環境研究中心To analyze the effect of runoff on shallow landslides, a model coupling one-dimensional rainfall-runoff and two-dimensional infiltration was established to simulate rainfall, infiltration, and runoff processes. Based on Bishop's limit equilibrium method, the slope failure of a hypothetical footslope was studied. First, conditions with and without inflow were compared. The results reveal a remarkable difference in factors of safety (FS) between the two conditions, suggesting that considering the effect of runoff is crucial for landslide modeling. In terms of a series of tests of the various magnitudes, durations, lag-time, and peak position of the hydrograph, analyses show that larger inflow leads to more accumulated infiltration and triggers landslides earlier. A long-term duration inflow decreases the stability more than short intensive inflow does. With subsequent surface inflow, slope failure may occur after rainfalls stop, owing to the inflow, and the shape of inflow hydrographs could slightly affect the variance in FS. Results also indicate the necessity of considering the surface runoff when using a numerical model to analyze landslide, particularly on a footslope.Item type:Item, Examination of characteristics method with cubic interpolation for advection-diffusion equation(2006-12-01) ;Tsai, Tung-Lin ;Chiang, Shih-Wei ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;土木工程學系防災與水環境研究中心In this study, the use of the characteristics method integrated with the Hermite cubic interpolation or the cubic-spline interpolation on the space line or the time line, i.e., the HCSL scheme, the CSSL scheme, the HCTL scheme, and the CSTL scheme, respectively, for solving the advection-diffusion equation is examined. The advection and diffusion of a Gaussian concentration distribution in a uniform flow with constant diffusion coefficient is used to conduct this investigation. The effects of parameters, such as Peclet number, Courant number, and the reachback number, on these four schemes used herein for solving the advection-diffusion equation are investigated. The simulated results show that the CSSL scheme is comparable to the HCSL scheme, and the two schemes seem insensitive to Courant number as compared with the HCTL scheme and the CSTL scheme. With large Peclet number, for small Courant number the HCTL scheme is more accurate than the HCSL scheme and the CSSL scheme. However, for large Courant number the HCTL scheme has worse computed results in comparison with the HCSL scheme and the CSSL scheme. With small Peclet number, the HCTL scheme, the HCSL scheme, and the CSSL scheme have close simulated results. Despite Peclet number, for small Courant number the CSTL scheme is comparable to the HCTL scheme, but for large Courant number the former scheme provides unacceptable simulated results in which very large numerical diffusion is induced due to the effect of the natural endpoint constraint. For large Peclet number the HCSL scheme and the CSSL scheme integrated with the reachback technique can improve simulated results, but for small Peclet number the HCSL scheme and the CSSL scheme seem not to be influenced by increasing the reachback number. This paper presents a study of groundwater- pumping management for mitigating flood hazard in a subsidence infested area in the southwest coast of Taiwan. An optimal groundwater-pumping model is developed for preventing flood hazard from worsening and for satisfying the groundwater demand. In an area where the land is susceptible to pumping-induced subsidence, the study shows that proper long-term pumping strategy to manage spatial-temporal variation of future land subsidence should be an integral part of flood risk management as it can sustain the effectiveness of the flood mitigation measures.Item type:Item, Incorporating Daily Rainfall to Derive At-Site Hourly Depth-Duration-Frequency Relationships(2009-09-01) ;Wu, Shiang-Jen ;Tung, Yeou-Koung ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringTwo models are herein presented to derive at-site hourly based rainfall depth-duration-frequency (DDF) relationships by incorporating daily rainfall information. The model development is motivated by the desire to utilize daily rainfall data that are in existence prior to the conversion from a manned gauge to an automatic one for improving the establishment of hourly based rainfall DDF relation at the site. The performance of the proposed models is assessed by comparing the rainfall DDF relationships derived from the conventional method using solely annual maximum rainfalls of various durations. Hourly rainfall data at Hong Kong Observatory over the period of 1884-1990 are used to demonstrate the application of the two proposed models and to examine their performance. Results from the numerical experiments show that the two proposed models, which incorporate daily rainfall data, are capable of producing more accurate and reliable rainfall DDF relationships than the conventional method solely on the basis of annual maximum hourly rainfalls.Item type:Item, Investigating effect of water level variation and surface tension crack on riverbank stability(2017-06-01) ;Chen, Chien-Hua ;Hsieh, Te-Yung ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;土木工程學系防災與水環境研究中心During high flow season, the rise and fall of river water level could induce riverbank instability and threaten structural safety of flood-protection facilities on floodplains. Through a flume experiment, this paper investigates the influences of three factors (namely, drawdown rate of river stage, initial water elevation, and riverbank slope angle) on riverbank stability due to the fall of river water level. From the laboratory experiments it was observed that tension crack appeared in all riverbank failure cases and all failure patterns were of planar type. Moreover, this paper presents a riverbank stability analysis model that explicitly incorporates the integral effect of all forces acting upon the failure plane and tension crack. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined by using experimental data obtained in this study and field data of the Hotophia Creek in the USA and the Sieve River in Italy. A comparison of model simulation results with and without considering tension crack clearly indicates the importance and necessity of including tension crack for achieving good accuracy in riverbank stability simulations. For practical application of the improved riverbank stability model, two empirical formulas for estimating tension crack location and failure plane angle were examined and modified to enhance their appropriateness in riverbank stability simulation. Finally, the improved model with the modified empirical formulas was verified to show its good prediction in riverbank stability analysis. In this model, the suspended load and bed load are both included to reproduce actual sediment transport characteristics of steep-sloped channels in the chosen study river reaches. A rheological relationship for Bingham fluid and the formula for the sediment carrying capacity, established through laboratory experiments, are used to describe the hyperconcentrated flow behaviour in the model. At peak discharge during Typhoon Morakot, bed shear stress from the hyperconcentrated flow model can be 150% larger than that from the clear water model. According to the simulation for Tung-Pu-Rey Creek, an upstream tributary of Zhuoshui River, the temporal evolution of bed changes obtained from the model can be used to provide plausible explanations for the reasons behind levee failure during Typhoon Toraji.Item type:Item, Numerical modeling of rainstorm-induced shallow landslides in saturated and unsaturated soils(2008-09-01) ;Tsai, Tung-Lin ;Chen, Hung-En ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringFor the assessment of shallow landslides triggered by rainfall, the physically based model coupling the infinite slope stability analysis with the hydrological modeling in nearly saturated soil has commonly been used due to its simplicity. However, in that model the rainfall infiltration in unsaturated soil could not be reliably simulated because a linear diffusion-type Richards' equation rather than the complete Richards' equation was used. In addition, the effect of matric suction on the shear strength of soil was not actually considered. Therefore, except the shallow landslide in saturated soil due to groundwater table rise, the shallow landslide induced by the loss in unsaturated shear strength due to the dissipation of matric suction could not be reliably assessed. In this study, a physically based model capable of assessing shallow landslides in variably saturated soils is developed by adopting the complete Richards' equation with the effect of slope angle in the rainfall infiltration modeling and using the extended Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion to describe the unsaturated shear strength in the soil failure modeling. The influence of rainfall intensity and duration on shallow landslide is investigated using the developed model. The result shows that the rainfall intensity and duration seem to have similar influence on shallow landslides respectively triggered by the increase of positive pore water pressure in saturated soil and induced by the dissipation of matric suction in unsaturated soil. The rainfall duration threshold decreases with the increase in rainfall intensity, but remains constant for large rainfall intensity.Item type:Item, Risk analysis for flood-control structure under consideration of uncertainties in design flood(2011-07-01) ;Wu, Shiang-Jen ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;Tung, Yeou-Koung ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringThis study presents a risk analysis model to evaluate the failure risk for the flood-control structures in the Keelung River due to the uncertainties in the hydrological and hydraulic analysis, including hydrologic, hydraulic, and geomorphologic uncertainty factors. This study defines failure risk as the overtopping probability of the maximum water level exceeding the levee crown, and the proposed risk analysis model integrates with the advanced first-order and second-moment (AFOSM) method to calculate the overtopping probability of levee system. The proposed model is used to evaluate the effects of the freeboard and flood-diversion channel on the flood-control ability of the levees in the Keelung River, which were designed based on the 3-day, 200-year design rainfall event. The numerical experiments indicate that the hydrologic uncertainty factors have more effect on the estimated maximum water level than hydraulic and geomorphologic uncertainty factors. In addition, the freeboard and the flood-diversion channel can effectively reduce the overtopping probability so as to significantly enhance the flood-control capacity of the levee system in the Keelung River. Eventually, the proposed risk analysis successfully quantifies the overtopping risk of the levee system under a scenario, the increase in the average 200-year rainfall amount due to climate change, and the results could be useful when planning to upgrade the existing levee system.Item type:Item, Stochastic generation of hourly rainstorm events(2006-12-01) ;Wu, Shiang-Jen ;Tung, Yeou-Koung ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringOccurrence of rainstorm events can be characterized by the number of events, storm duration, rainfall depth, inter-event time and temporal variation of rainfall within a rainstorm event. This paper presents a Monte-Carlo based stochastic hourly rainfall generation model considering correlated non-normal random rainstorm characteristics, as well as dependence of various rainstorm patterns on rainfall depth, duration, and season. The proposed model was verified by comparing the derived rainfall depth-duration-frequency relations from the simulated rainfall sequences with those from observed annual maximum rainfalls based on the hourly rainfall data at the Hong Kong Observatory over the period of 1884-1990. Through numerical experiments, the proposed model was found to be capable of capturing the essential statistical features of rainstorm characteristics and those of annual extreme rainstorm events according to the available data.Item type:Item, Stochastically optimal considering groundwater management land subsidence(2007-11-01) ;Chang, Yin-Lung ;Tsai, Tung-Lin ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;Tung, Yeou-Koung土木工程學系This paper presents a stochastic groundwater management model explicitly considering land subsidence. Through the use of response matrix technique and one-dimensional consolidation equation, a deterministic management model is first developed. By Latin hypercube sampling technique, along with numerical subsurface flow simulation, statistical features of unit response coefficients due to random hydrogeologic parameters, including hydraulic conductivity (K) and Lame constants (mu and lambda), are quantified. The first-ordervariance-estimation method is adopted to analyze the uncertainties of drawdown and land subsidence based on which the concept of chance-con strained programming is applied to transfer the original deterministic management model into its stochastic form. The stochastic management model enables the determination of optimal total pumpage subject to the constraints that drawdown and land subsidence do not exceed the allowable values with a specified reliability. A hypothetical example is utilized to demonstrate the applicability of the stochastic model to five cases in which various levels of parameter uncertainty are considered. The results indicate that joint consideration of drawdown and land subsidence is essential, and the proposed stochastic management model can be generally applied for regional groundwater resources management in conjunction with controlling land subsidence.Item type:Item, Threshold of Slope Instability Induced by Rainfall and Lateral Flow(2017-09-01) ;Chen, Hung-En ;Tsai, Tung-Lin ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringIn this study, a two-dimensional numerical landslide model was developed to investigate the effects of the amount of rainfall and lateral flow on induced slope failures. The Richard's equation was used to evaluate pore water pressure distribution in response to moisture content variations induced by rainfall and infiltration in soil mass. The slope stability was then assessed using the limit equilibrium method of slices, and the moment equilibrium was considered. Several hypothetical cases involving various rainfall amounts and durations were simulated using the proposed model to investigate the possible tendency toward slope instability caused by rainfall time-series processes. After the rainfall conditions were analyzed, rainfall patterns were categorized as uniform, intermediate, advanced, and delayed types. Furthermore, the lateral flows running through the upstream and downstream boundaries of a slope were analyzed to investigate the lateral effects on the hillslope. The results indicated that the lateral flow may increase or reduce the groundwater table and, thus, accelerate or reduce the occurrence of slope failure. In addition, several rainfall threshold curves that accounted for the rainfall amounts, durations, and patterns were developed and appeared more realistic and to approximate real conditions more accurately than those created using one-dimensional landslide modeling do.Item type:Item, Two dimensional shallow-water flow model with immersed boundary method(2011-12-15) ;Chung, Hau-Rong ;Hsieh, Te-Yung ;Yang, Jinn-Chuang ;防災與水環境研究中心Disaster Prevention and Water Environment Research CenterThis study demonstrates an immersed boundary (IB) method which integrates a depth-averaged two dimensional flow model is proposed to tackle a typical fluid-solid phase problem in fluid dynamics field. The finite-difference scheme with curvilinear coordinate system is employed to discretize the shallow-water flow equations. Lagrangian markers and Eulerian grid are applied to portray the geometric contour of interior boundary and discretize the flow domain, respectively. The Dirac delta function is accordingly conducted to link both Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinate systems. The numerical simulations of single pier are performed and compared to examine the effect of marker's mesh width, grid size, and the various Dirac delta functions. Experimental data from literatures are compared with numerical results to justify the validity of the proposed IB model. To further demonstrate the model capability, the model is applied to the hypothetical cases of piers in parallel, and compared with theoretical results. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. However, most habitat studies only considered existing or proposed channel geometries in their WUA computations and not how the channel will evolve over time. This study reports a numerical investigation for the effects of spur dikes on WUA along the Juanchiao levee, Touchien River, Taiwan. Seven virtual dikes were placed along the outer bend in the study reach and the Rhinogobius candidianus was selected for target species. The horizontal two-dimensional (2D) flow fields at various flows and the corresponding WUAs for R. candidianus were computed under four channel bathymetry configurations, including: (1)existing; (2)immediately after dikes are implemented; (3)after 10-year channel migration without dikes; and (4)10years after dikes are implemented. The WUA obtained from the first two bathymetry configurations aimed to investigate the short-term spur dikes effect, whereas the last two examined the long-term effect. The channel geometry after 10years channel migration under the conditions of both with and without spur dikes were simulated through a 2D mobile bed model. The analyses of short-term effect showed the WUA of R. candidianus, shortly after the virtual dikes were placed, increases due to increased water depth near the dikes, especially in low-flow conditions. As for long-term effects, however, the WUA in the case with spur dikes are lower than the case without spur dikes, especially in relatively high-flow conditions. The adverse effects of spur dikes on WUA appeared in the long-term investigation and resulted from the ever-increasing water depth and flow velocity around the tip of spur dikes and the main channel. This study showed that the habitat quality and availability might be overestimated if the channel bed changes over time. When using the WUA approach to evaluate the effects of instream structure on physical habitat prior to actually placing them in the river, quantitative predictions of the long-term variation of channel geometry and the associated physical habitat conditions are important.
