Item type:Item, Alkyl chain self ordering, induction and suppression of mesophase by Cu(II) containing [1,2,3]-triazole-based bidentate salicylaldimine ligands: synthesis, characterisation and X-ray diffraction studies(2014-12-02) ;Heng, Boon-Teck ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Mahmood, Wan Ahmad Kamil ;Han, Chun-ChiehLin, Hong-CheuSome new Cu(II) complexes containing [1,2,3]-triazole-based bidentate salicylaldimine and its analogues with terminal substituent (F, Cl, Br and I) have been synthesieed. All the target complexes and their uncoordinated ligands were elucidated by elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques (UV-visible, FT-IR, 1D, 2D H-1 and C-13-NMR). The polarising optical microscope and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) have disclosed all complexes and ligands are mesomorphic except the complex without any terminal substituent. The fluoro-substituted complexes with even parity C14H29 and C16H33 exhibit new enantiotropic nematic phase which was absent in their corresponding ligands, whereas the suppression of SmC phase occurred for all complexes with longer C16H33 and C18H37. X-ray diffraction confirmed the existence of SmA, SmC and N phases for complexes and ligands. The other notable feature is that the self-ordering of terminal alkyl chain occurred in SmA and SmC phases of complexes with even terminal alkyl chain ranging from C14H29 to C18H33. Their corresponding ligands exhibit intercalated structure of SmA and SmC phases. The thermal behaviour studies show that the fluoro-substituted triazole-based complexes possess lowest phase transition temperature and more stable as compared to other substituent which decomposed during the isotropisation.Item type:Item, Heterocyclic benzothiazole-based liquid crystals: synthesis and mesomorphic properties(2009) ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Koh, Teck-Ming ;Lin, Hong-Cheu ;Yeap, Guan-YeowWin, Yip-FooTwo homologous series of 2-(4-alkanoyloxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles and 2-(2-hydroxy-4-alkanoyloxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles were synthesised and characterised. Their molecular structures differed wherein the latter comprised a lateral hydroxyl group, unlike the former. Spectroscopic techniques such as FT-IR, 1H 13C NMR and mass spectrometry together with elemental analysis were employed to elucidate the molecular structures. The transition temperatures and their mesophases were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarising microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Members with decanoyloxy till hexadecanoloxy chain in the series without the lateral hydroxyl group each exhibited a smectic A phase, while those in the series with the lateral hydroxyl group were non-mesogenic. The mesomorphic properties of the present series were compared with other structurally related series to establish the chemical structure-mesomorphic properties relationship.Item type:Item, Heterocyclic pyridine-based liquid crystals: synthesis and mesomorphic properties(2018-01-01) ;Ong, Lay-Khoon ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Lin, Hong-Cheu材料科學與工程學系A series of new calamitic liquid crystals, 4-{[(pyridin-4-yl)methylidene]amino}phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoates comprising a heterocyclic (pyridine) and two phenyl rings core system, terminal alkoxy chain, imine and ester linkers were synthesised and characterised. This series consists of nine members wherein the members differ by the length of alkoxy chain (CnH2n+1O-, where n=2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18). Spectral analysis results were in accordance with the expected structure. Their thermotropic behaviours were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarising microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. A single mesophase (nematic) was observed for the first three members of the series (n=2, 4 and 6). As the alkoxy chain increased to n=8 and n=10, the nematic phase appeared together with an additional smectic A (SmA) phase. When moving from n=12 until the highest members (n=18), the nematic phase disappeared and these compounds only exhibited a single mesophase (SmA). The terminal substituent was varied from halogen (X=F, Cl, Br and I) to non-halogen (X=C2H5 and OC2H5). The oligomers with C2H5 and OC2H5 substituents exhibit predominantly the monotropic nematic (N) phase. The OC2H5-containing derivatives possess long-range stability of N phase than its C2H5-containing analogue in which it has small range of N phase stability. As for halogen-containing analogues, oligomer with F exhibits monotropic N phase whilst oligomers with Cl and Br exhibit monotropic N and smectic A (SmA) phases. In addition, homologue with Br shows additional phase which is smectic B (SmB) phase upon further cooling. However, the oligomers in which F, Cl and Br were substituted by I exhibits purely monotropic SmA and SmB phases. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the smectic phase is inclined to the monolayer structure.Item type:Item, Liquid crystal dimers containing Cholesteryl and Triazole-containing mesogenic units(1970-01-01) ;Al-shargabi, Arwa ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Mahmood, Wan Ahmad Kamil ;Han, Chun-ChiehLin, Hong-CheuNew liquid crystals categorised as cholesteryl dimers have been successfully synthesised through the reaction between cholesteryl 4-(prop-2-ynyloxy)benzoate moieties with n-azido(cholesteryloxy-carbonyl)alkane. All the dimers display enantiotropic mesophases. Whilst the odd-numbered dimers exhibit chiral nematic (N*), twisted grain boundary (TGB) and chiral smectic C (SmC*) phases, the even-numbered members from the same series show chiral smectic A and C. A detailed inspection on mesophase reveals that the chiral centres and the bent conformation of the odd-numbered members are essential for the induction of TGB phase. However, upon decreasing the temperature, the ratio of the transition temperatures (TSmC*-SmA*/TSmA*-I) is found to be 0.95, which indicate the second order transition according to the McMillan's molecular theory. In addition, the X-ray diffraction study supports the presence of the smectic A phase on the even members rather than the N* by the appearance of the Bragg diffraction peaks at 190 degrees C. A comparison study with the other analogues in which the cholesterol entity is substituted by azobenzene or biphenyl tails has been carried out to assess the relationship between the molecular structure and mesomorphic behaviour. The members in this series possess different inner spacer with carbon number n ranging from 4 to 9 while the outer spacer length located in azobenzene moieties are remains unaltered. The members with even parity exhibit monotropic phase, whereas homologues with odd parity display enantiotropic phase. The appearance of nematic, smectic A and smectic B phases was validated with texture observation under polarised light and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD study on the S-shaped oligomer indicates that the arrangement of smectic phase exists as an intercalated structure. The S-shaped oligomer shows photoisomerisation properties in solution whereby the trans to cis isomerisation for this molecule is accomplished 1140 s, whereas reverse process under thermal back reaction occurred in 4620 min. Their mesomorphic properties were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. All compounds showed enantiotropic mesomorphism. Whilst the lower members of the series, hexanoyloxy and octanoyloxy derivatives exhibited nematic phase, the higher members (decanoyloxy, dodecanoyloxy, tetradecanoyloxy, hexadecanoyloxy and octadecanoyloxy derivatives) exhibited nematic and smectic C phases.Item type:Item, Mesogenic Schiff base esters with terminal chloro group: Synthesis, thermotropic properties and X-ray diffraction studies(2010-05-01) ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Ong, Lay-Khoon ;Sivasothy, Yasodha ;Yeap, Guan-YeowLin, Hong-CheuA new homologous series of Schiff base esters comprising a terminal chloro substituent was studied. The chloro substituent contributes to the molecular polarizability, thus, affecting intermolecular interactions, hence, resulting in smectic polymorphism. The mesomorphic properties were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and temperature-dependent X-ray diffractometry. Whilst the n-pentanoyloxy and n-heptanoyloxy derivatives exhibited enantiotropic smectogenic A and B phases, monotropic smectogenic A and B phases were observed in the n-butanoyloxy and n-hexanoyloxy derivatives. Enantiotropic smectogenic A and monotropic smectogenic B phases were observed in the n-octanoyloxy to n-hexadecanoyloxy derivatives. The highest member of this series, the n-octadecanoyloxy derivative, exhibited an enantiotropic smectogen A phase. The homologous members were compared with structurally related series to establish their chemical structure-mesomorphic behavior relationships.Item type:Item, Mesogenic Schiff's base ether with dimethylamino end group(2009) ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Ong, Lay-Khoon ;Wong, Joanna Pik-Wan ;Yeap, Guan-YeowLin, Hong-CheuA series of Schiff base ethers comprising a dimethylamino group at one terminal position and an even number of carbons at the other along the molecular axis was studied. The dimethylamino unit, acting as a charge-transfer donor in the formation of conjugative interactions, contributes to the molecule's polarizability and in turn affecting its intermolecular interactions, leading to the formation of less-ordered mesophase. The mesomorphic properties were studied using polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Whilst the n-butyloxy to n-hexadecyloxy derivatives exhibited nematic phase, the n-ethyloxy, n-propyloxy and n-octadecyloxy derivatives were not mesogenic. Their phase transitions during heating and cooling run were presented. The title compounds were compared with other structurally related series to establish their chemical structure-mesomorphic property relationships.Item type:Item, New mesomorphic benzothiazol derivatives: Synthesis and characterization(2013-10-01) ;Koh, Teck-Ming ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Lin, Hong-Cheu材料科學與工程學系In this paper, the synthesis of new mesomorphic benzothiazolyl derivatives, 6-ethoxy-2-[4-(4-alkyloxybenzoyloxy)benzylidenamino]benzothiazoles, is presented. The structures of the title compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic techniques, such as FT-IR, NMR (H-1 and C-13), elemental analysis and EI-MS. The mesomorphic behaviours of these compounds were determined by differential scanning calorimetric and polarizing optical microscopic techniques. Compounds exhibited nematic and tilted smectic phases upon heating from crystal phase. An obvious odd-even effect was observed in this homologous series. (C) 2013 Sie-Tiong Ha. At one end of the para-position of the azobenzene fragment consists of different terminal substituents X=F, Cl, Br, I, C2H5 and OC2H5. The thermal behaviour and mesomorphic properties of the star-shaped compounds were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction analyses. Moreover, the liquid-crystalline properties of all the intermediates 4-[(4-substituted-phenyl)diazenyl]phenoxy-6-bromohexane were also evaluated. Whilst all the star-shaped compounds exhibit nematic and smectic A phases, the mesogens with chloro- and bromo-terminal substituents were found to show soft crystalline phase. The smectic phase and the possible molecular arrangement of the star-shaped molecule within the anisotropic region were further substantiated by the XRD. In addition to a low-angle sharp peak (reflecting the layered structure), a diffuse wide-angle peak indicating the liquid-like order within the smectic layer was recorded. A comparative study between the properties of the present azo mesogens and the earlier reported star-shaped mesogens from Schiff bases is also discussed.Item type:Item, Non-symmetrical liquid crystal dimers armed with azobenzene and 1,2,3-triazole-cholesterol(2015-09-02) ;Alshargabi, Arwa ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Mahmood, Wan Ahmad Kamil ;Han, Chun-ChiehLin, Hon-CheuNew non-symmetrical dimers which contain respective side units of azobenzene and 1,2,3-triazole-choloesteral have been synthesised from the reaction between 6-azido-[4-(4-acetylphenylazo)phenoxy]alkane and cholesteryl-4-(prop-2-ynyloxy)benzoate. The results show that the derivatives of 6-bromo[4-(4-acetylphenylazo)phenoxy]alkanes which possess the odd alkyl spacers exhibit dimesomorphism of N and SmA phases whilst the members with even numbers are non-mesogenic. However, the 6-azido-[4-(4-acetylphenylazo)phenoxy]-alkanes show N and SmA phases in a wide temperature range. On heating and cooling the target compounds cholesteryl 4-[(1-(6-(4-(4\'-acetylphenylazo)phenoxy)alkyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methoxy]benzoate show chiral nematic (oily streak and fan-shaped texture) and focal conic texture characteristics of smectic A phases with high thermal stability. Present investigation also reveals the effect of the spacer length upon the phase transition temperature. Intercalated arrangement is favoured by the molecules in the smectic phase. The observation is well established by XRD measurement wherein the actual molecular length is smaller than the theoretical value.Item type:Item, Phase transitional behaviour of S-shaped oligomers incorporating biphenylene and cholesterol entities(2017-01-01) ;Osman, Faridah ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Maeta, Nobuyuki ;Ito, Masato M.Lin, Chien-MingA new series of symmetrical S-shaped oligomers 4,4'-bis[(5-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentyl alkoxy)hexyloxy]biphenyl consisting of outer spacers -(COCH2)(n)- as well as an inner spacer -(CH2)(6)- has been synthesised. Their liquid crystalline properties and phase transition temperatures with associated enthalpy changes are recorded. The outer spacers are varied from n=5-8 to 10 and 11. The compounds with even spacer exhibit enantiotropic phase and oligomers with odd parity display monotropic phase. The oligomers with odd membered n=5, 7 and 11 exhibit N* and SmC* phases upon cooling. Whilst upon heating, the homologues with even-numbered member n=6 and 10 show N* phase and upon cooling, both compounds exhibit N* and SmC* phases. However, oligomer with outer spacer n=8 displays enantiotropic N* and SmC* phases. The temperature range of N* phase for even and odd membered decreased as the outer spacers are increased. The odd-even effect has been found in the I-N* transition temperatures where the odd-parity oligomers exhibit lower values when compared to compounds of an even-parity series. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the appearance of SmC* phase that can be associated with the monolayer ordering of these oligomers.Item type:Item, Self-assembled 1,2-bis[4-(4-(10-decyloxy)phenylazo)]benzoylhydrazine dimer and its hydrogen-bonded complexes(2013-07-01) ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Balamurugan, Subramanian ;Rakesh, Samikannu ;Han, Chun-ChiehLin, Hong-CheuWe report the synthesis and investigation of a new self-assembled benzoylhydrazine-based compound, namely 1,2-bis[4-(4-(10-decyloxy)phenylazo)]benzoylhydrazine and their hydrogen-bonded complexes with different carboxylic acid derivatives, of which some exhibit liquid crystalline properties and some are non-mesogens. The conversion of the non-liquid crystalline target compound that is free from carboxylic acid to liquid crystalline complexes containing various carboxylic acids can probably be rationalised through the breaking of intermolecular hydrogen bonding within the supramolecular assembly by carboxylic acid dopants. The enhancement of liquid crystalline properties of benzoylhydrazine compounds with respect to various carboxylic dopants is documented. Other salient features can be exemplified by the formation of discotic columnar phase as shown by the azo-linkage containing 4-(4-(10-decyloxy)phenylazo)benzoic acid-doped complex.Item type:Item, Self-assembled 1,2-bis[4-(4-(10-decyloxy)phenylazo)]benzoylhydrazine dimer and its hydrogen-bonded complexes(2013-07-01) ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Balamurugan, Subramanian ;Rakesh, Samikannu ;Han, Chun-ChiehLin, Hong-CheuWe report the synthesis and investigation of a new self-assembled benzoylhydrazine-based compound, namely 1,2-bis[4-(4-(10-decyloxy)phenylazo)]benzoylhydrazine and their hydrogen-bonded complexes with different carboxylic acid derivatives, of which some exhibit liquid crystalline properties and some are non-mesogens. The members in this series differ by the length of the methylene unit of-(CH2)(n)-, where n, varied following ascending order from 5 to 10. The molecular structure was characterized by elemental (C, H and N) analysis and spectroscopic methods including Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (H-1 NMR). The texture and the phase transition temperatures were investigated by using polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The disc-shape molecule with shorter spacer (n = 5) showed monotropic nematic phase. The higher homologues with n = 8-10 exhibited enantiotropic nematic phase and monotropic smectic C phase. The XRD diffraction studies further confirm the presence of smectic C without any discotic columnar phase. The structure of the compounds was postulated using elemental analyses, FT-IR, NMR, and mass spectrometry techniques. Their liquid crystalline properties have been investigated by optical polarizing microscopy, DSC, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Whilst the n-octyloxy to n-hexadecyloxy derivatives exhibited a monotropic smectic A phase, the n-ethoxy to n-hexyloxy and the n-octadecyloxy derivatives were not mesogenic. The mesomorphic properties of the present series were compared with other structurally related series to establish the chemical structure-mesomorphic properties relationship.Item type:Item, Synthesis and Mesomorphic Properties of 4-(Methylthio)benzylidene-4 '-n-alkanoyloxyanilines(2011-10-01) ;Ha, Sie-Tiong ;Lee, Teck-Leong ;Yeap, Guan-Yeow ;Lin, Hong-CheuIto, Masato M.A homologous series of Schiff base esters, 4-(methylthio)benzylidene-4'-n-alkanoyloxyanilines possessing even number of carbon atoms at the alkanoyloxy chain (C(n-1)H(2n-1)COO, n = 2 to 18) was synthesized. Mesomorphic properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy techniques. Whilst n-butanoyloxy to n-octanoyloxy derivatives exhibited monotropic nematic phase, n-ethanoyloxy and n-decanoyloxy to n-octadecanoyloxy derivatives were non-mesogenic compounds. Structural elucidation was carried out using elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resources (NMR), and mass spectrometry. The mesomorphic properties and thermal stabilities of the title compounds were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. No liquid-crystal phases were observed for the short-chain members (n=2 and 3) in both series, and the remaining members all exhibited nematic phase with Schlieren or marble-like textures. Effects of the lateral hydroxyl group, terminal group, and the length of the terminal alkanoyloxy chain on the mesomorphic properties are discussed. Structure-property relationships were established upon comparison with other structurally related compounds.
