Item type:Item, A study of lattice elasticity from low entropy metals to medium and high entropy alloys(2015-05-01) ;Huang, E-Wen ;Yu, Dunji ;Yeh, Jien-Wei ;Lee, ChiAn, KeAn equal-molar CoCrFeMnNi, face-centered-cubic high-entropy alloy system and a face-centered-cubic stainless steel described as a medium-entropy system, are measured by in situ neutron-diffraction experiments subjected to continuous tension at room and several elevated temperatures, respectively. With spallation neutron, the evolution of multiple diffraction peaks is collected simultaneously for lattice-elasticity study. Temperature variation of elastic stiffness of a single face-centered-cubic-phase Ni and a single face-centered-cubic-phase Fe are compared as low-entropy metals. The CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy shows distinct lattice anisotropy. (C) 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The samples were prepared by reacting SiO2 NSs with AgNO3 in the seed-mediated growth process, from which the Ag particle size and decoration density can be readily controlled. The dependence of the SPR-mediated photocatalytic performance of Ag-decorated SiO2 NSs on the Ag morphology was investigated and presented. The as-prepared Ag-decorated SiO2 NSs showed a significantly red shifted and relatively broad SPR absorption when compared with the individually dispersed Ag nanoparticles. Owing to the considerably broad SPR absorption that spanned from the visible to the near-infrared region, Ag-decorated SiO2 NSs surpassed N-doped P-25 TiO2 powder and individually dispersed Ag nanoparticles in photocatalytic activity, demonstrating their potential as an active photocatalyst in nearly all the current photocatalysis applications. Furthermore, the result of performance evaluation under natural sunlight shows that the present Ag-decorated SiO2 NSs can be used as highly efficient photocatalysts that may practically harvest energy from sunlight. The current study provides a new paradigm for designing plasmonic metal nanostructures that can effectively absorb the entire solar spectrum and beyond for solar fuel generation.Item type:Item, Differences in texture evolution from low-entropy to high-entropy face-centered cubic alloys during tension test(2020-03-01) ;Lin, Kuan-Hao ;Chang, Shou-Yi ;Lo, Yu-Chieh ;Wang, Chun-ChiehLin, Su-JienTexture evolution during tension test was investigated on three face-centered cubic (FCC) metals, namely, Ni (unary), equiatomic CrFeNi (ternary), and equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi (quinary) with small and large grain sizes of similar to 20 and similar to 100 mu m, respectively. The microtextures for 18%, 36% and 54% engineering strains of a tension-interrupted specimen were characterized on the same area. The three metals exhibited a similar texture evolution, which the fraction of {001}//ND remains constant However, the fraction of {011}//ND decreases, whereas that of {111}//ND increases. On the other hand, the fraction of <001>//RD also remains constant, that of <011>//RD decreases, and that of <111>//RD increases. However, the several differences still were found during plastic deformation. Fine-grained Ni initiated a significantly crystallographic rotation (CRo) at the lower strain, increased with strain and then remained nearly unchanged as strain was higher than 18%. Coarse-grained Ni delayed this rotation and slowly developed the trend at large strains. As for CrFeNi, the comparison between fine-grained and coarse-grained structure does not have obvious difference. As for fine-grained CoCrFeMnNi, it can be seen that an obvious CRo develops under 36% strain, and maintains constant over 36% strain. But the coarse-grained CoCrFeMnNi reveals that the significant CRo develops continuously from 0% to 54% strain. The mechanisms for the effects of number of element and grain size in the present study are elucidated.Item type:Item, In-situ neutron diffraction studies on high-temperature deformation behavior in a CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy(2015-07-01) ;Woo, Wanchuck ;Huang, E-Wen ;Yeh, Jien-Wei ;Choo, HahnLee, ChiAn equiatomic, face-centered-cubic, CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy was tensile tested at 800 K and 1,000 K with a nominal strain rate of 6.7 x 10(-6) s(-1). In addition to the macroscopic (bulk) behavior, mesoscopic (lattice) phenomena during the pseudo-creep deformation were investigated simultaneously using in-situ neutron diffraction. The evolutions of lattice strains, peak widths, and intensities of several hkl reflections suggest that the dominant deformation mode is the dislocation glide at 800 K and diffusion-controlled dislocation creep at 1,000 K. Studies to date have been devoted to what the severe lattice distortion induces. However, most researchers focus on its stimulation to plastic deformation instead of scrutinizing the variations on elasticity. Compared with conventional alloys, HEAs may perform disproportionate elasticity with uneven local lattice strain resulting from the severe lattice distortion. Therefore, it is necessary to survey its influence on the mechanical properties of HEAs systematically. In this study, the Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential, the embedded atom method (EAM) potential, and the modified embedded atom method (MEAM), are respectively conducted to investigate the lattice distortion effect on Young's modulus E (hkl) and Poisson's ratio nu (hkl, theta) along [100], [110], and [111] loading directions for several fcc metals composed of 1 similar to 5 atomic types, including Ni, Ni98W2, Ni96W4, FeCrNi, and CoNiCrFeMn HEAs. Also, a method is used to analyze the performance of the individual element on the elastic properties in the HEA environment. As a result, it can be unveiled that the effect of electron density inconsistency is more dominant than the effect of lattice distortion associated with the atomic size difference. The electronic configuration in the HEA environment plays a major role in elastic anisotropy while the difference of the atomic radii does the minor one. The anisotropy of CoNiCrFeMn HEA analyzed by this work is also consistent with in-situ neutron diffraction measurements. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. The microstructures of the synthesized wiry and cubic piezoelectric materials were investigated, and the details of the reactions were elucidated as well. The piezoelectricity of individual NaNbO3 (Pbma) nanowires was confirmed by piezoresponse force microscopy, and an effective piezoelectric coefficient along the vertical direction of around a few pm/V was obtained. To our knowledge, the present work is the first report of the preparation of NaNbO3 nanowires as well as the determination of piezoelectricity.Item type:Item, Studies on the annealing and antibacterial properties of the silver-embedded aluminum/silica nanospheres(2014-06-17) ;Pan, Ko-Ying ;Chien, Chia-Hung ;Pu, Ying-Chih ;Liu, Chia-MingHsu, Yung-JungSubstantial silver-embedded aluminum/silica nanospheres with uniform diameter and morphology were successfully synthesized by sol-gel technique. Based on the result of the above analyses, the silver-embedded aluminum/silica nanospheres are eligible for fabricating antibacterial utensils.Item type:Item, Studies on the photocatalysis of core-shelled SiO2-Ag nanospheres by controlled surface plasmon resonance under visible light(2014-08-30) ;Pan, Ko-Ying ;Liang, Yi-Fan ;Pu, Ying-Chih ;Hsu, Yung-JungYeh, Jien-WeiAbundant core-shelled silica-silver nanospheres with uniform diameter and morphology were successfully synthesized by Stober and seed-mediated method, in sequence. By the different additions of glucose, the silver nanoparticles were deposited on silica spheres by redox reaction, which well controlled in the range from 10 to 50 nm. The surface plasmon resonance absorption band shifted toward infra-red region and became broader gradually during the dimensions of silver nanoparticles were increased in the growth range. The amazing data imply that using core-shelled silica-silver nanospheres efficiently enhances the degradation of the organic pollutants under solar energy, which means the core-shelled silica-silver nanospheres is not only a cost-effective route but an energy-saving way to our planet. Although metallic diffusion barriers offer many advantages, their application is hindered due to their inferior thermal stability relative to ceramic barriers. Here we report on a metallic diffusion barrier, NbSiTaTiZr, which shows thermal stability comparable to ceramic barriers. The outstanding performance of NbSiTaTiZr is due to its better structural and chemical stability at high temperatures. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Herein, the focus is on recent advances in three emerging paradigms: entropy engineering, phase-boundary mapping, and liquid-like TE materials in the context of thermodynamic routes. Specifically, entropy engineering is underpinned by the core effects of high-entropy alloys; the extended solubility limit, the tendency to form a high-symmetry crystal structure, severe lattice distortions, and sluggish diffusion processes afford large phase space for performance optimization, high electronic-band degeneracy, rich multiscale microstructures, and low lattice thermal conductivity toward higher-performance TE materials. Entropy engineering is successfully implemented in half-Huesler and IV-VI compounds. In Zintl phases and skutterudites, the efficacy of phase-boundary mapping is demonstrated through unraveling the profound relations among chemical compositions, mutual solubilities of constituent elements, phase instability, microstructures, and resulting TE properties at the operation temperatures. Attention is also given to liquid-like TE materials that exhibit lattice thermal conductivity at lower than the amorphous limit due to intensive mobile ion disorder and reduced vibrational entropy. To conclude, an outlook on the development of next-generation TE materials in line with these thermodynamic routes is given.
