Item type:Item, A 60-GHz, 14% Tuning Range, Multi-Band VCO with a Single Variable Inductor(2008) ;Yu, Chi-Yao ;Chen, Wei-Zen ;Wu, Chung-Yu ;Lu, Tai-You電子工程學系及電子研究所This paper presents the design of a 60-GHz, 14% tuning range VCO with a single variable inductor (VID). By employing the proposed frequency tuning scheme, wide-tuning range as well as multi-band operations are achieved without sacrificing its operating frequency. Fabricated in a 90-nm CMOS process, the VCO is capable of covering frequency range from 53.1 to 61.3 GHz. The measured phase noise from a 61.3 GHz carrier is about -118.75 dBc/Hz at 10-MHz offset, and the output power is -6.6 dBm. The VCO core dissipates 8.7 mW from a 0.7-V supply. Chip size is 0.28 x 0.36 mm(2).Item type:Item, Design and analysis of a millimeter-wave direct injection-locked frequency divider with large frequency locking range(2007-08-01) ;Wu, Chung-Yu ;Yu, Chi-Yao ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsIn this paper, direct injection-locked frequency dividers (ILFDs), which operate in the millimeter-wave (MMW) band, are analyzed. An analytically equivalent model of the direct ILFD)s is developed, and important design guidelines for a large frequency locking range are obtained from it. These guidelines are: 1) maximize the quality factor of the passive load; 2) maintain low output amplitude; and 3) increase the dc overdrive voltage of the input device. A direct ILFD without varactors is designed and fabricated using a 0.13-mu m bulk CMOS process to verify the developed model and design guidelines. A pMOS current source is used to restrict the output amplitude and to increase the de overdrive voltage of the input device to achieve a large frequency locking range. The size of the input device is only 3.6 mu m/0.12 mu m and the measured frequency locking range is 13.6% at 70 GHz with a power consumption of 4.4 mW from a supply voltage of 1 V. In short, the proposed divider has the potential to be integrated into an MMW phase-locked loop system.Item type:Item, VOLTAGE-CONTROLLED OSCILLATOR(2010-03-11) ;Chen, Wei-Zen ;Wu, Chung-YuYu, Chi-YaoA voltage-controlled oscillator comprises a variable inductor, a negative impedance circuit, an operating voltage source and a ground point. The variable inductor comprises a transformer and a transistor switch, the transformer comprising a primary side coil and a secondary side coil, the primary side coil comprising a first coil and a second coil, and the secondary side coil comprising a third coil and a fourth coil. The transistor switch is connected in parallel with the primary side coil to adjust an inductance value of the variable inductor based on a gate voltage. The negative impedance circuit is connected in parallel with the secondary side coil to compensate the power consumption of the voltage-controlled oscillator during oscillation. The operating voltage source is electrically connected between the third coil and the fourth coil, and the ground point is electrically connected between the first coil and the second coil.Item type:Item, Wide Tunning Range 60 GHz VCO and 40 GHz DCO Using Single Variable Inductor(2013-02-01) ;Lu, Tai-You ;Yu, Chi-Yao ;Chen, Wei-Zen ;Wu, Chung-Yu電子工程學系及電子研究所This paper presents a 60 GHz, 16% tuning range VCO, and a 40 GHz, 18 bits, 14% tuning range DCO incorporating variable inductor (VID) techniques. The variable inductor, consisting of a transformer and a variable resistor, is tunable by adjusting its resistor. By employing the proposed frequency tuning scheme, wide-tuning range as well as multi-band operation are achieved without sacrificing their operating frequencies. To verify the operation principles, the VCO and DCO are both fabricated in 90 nm CMOS technology. The tuning range of VCO is from 52.2 GHz to 61.3 GHz. The measured phase noise from a 61.3-GHz carrier is about -118.75 dBc/Hz at 10-MHz offset, and the output power is -6.6 dBm. It dissipates 8.7 mW from a 0.7-V supply, and the chip size is 0.28 x 0.36 mm(2). On the other hand, the DCO is capable of covering frequency range from 37.6 GHz to 43.4 GHz. The measured phase noise from a 43 GHz carrier is about -109 dBc/Hz at 10-MHz offset, and the output power is -11 dBm. The DCO core dissipates 19 mW from a 1.2-V supply. Chip size is 0.5 x 0.15 mm(2).
