Item type:Item, A Dynamic Competition Analysis on the Personal Computer Shipments in Taiwan Using Lotka-Volterra Model(2008) ;Chiang, Su-Yun ;Wong, Gwo-Gauang ;Li, Yiming ;Yu, Hsiao-Cheng科技管理研究所In this work, we explore the innovative growth of personal computer (PC) shipments in Taiwan. We estimate the marketing diffusion with the consideration of the competition of desktop (DT) and notebook (NB). Mathematically, using the Lotka-Volterra model, we analyze the dynamic competitive relationship between the shipments of DT and NB. All the parameters in the Lotka-Volterra model are calibrated with the realistic shipment data, and the predicted trends to 2010 are thus drawn. Our results clarify a pure competition between DT and NB in PC market. The competitive relationship of dynamic PC shipments in Taiwan is thus examined, including consideration of the interaction between two species to explain the actual diffusion phenomenon in the competitive market. Comparison between well-known growth model, Bass model, and competitive Lotka-Volterra Model is also drawn. In addition, it is shown that the competition between DT and NB would reach an equilibrium point which is stable over time and we further analyze how the deviation returns to the stable equilibrium.Item type:Item, A hybrid selection model for emerging technology(2010-01-01) ;Shen, Yung-Chi ;Chang, Shu-Hsuan ;Lin, Grace T. R. ;Yu, Hsiao-Cheng科技管理研究所Technology selection, which influences the advantages of an enterprise or a country, is a rnulticriteria decision issue that can be improved by integrating different methods. In addition, it is more and more difficult to identify the right technologies because the technologies are increasing in number and complexity. This study proposes a technology selection process integrating fuzzy Delphi method, analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and patent co-citation approach (PCA) for technology selection. The former effectively gathers experts' judgments toward technology selection criteria and conducts the fuzziness existing in their responses. The analytic hierarchy process has the strength of identifying criteria and obtaining their relationship and their weights. The patent co-citation approach identifies the major R&D fields of a specific technology from patent data. Through this proposed process. the key technology fields can be identified in the end. The organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology in Taiwan is used to bean example to illustrate the proposed technology selection process. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Vendor selection is an essential factor affecting outsourcing operations performance and has been determined as a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel hybrid MCDM technique to cope with the complex and interactive vendor evaluation and selection problem which can determine the structural relationships and the interrelationships amongst all the evaluation's dimensions and support the Analytic Network Process (ANP) method to arrange appropriate weightings to each dimension and criterion in the evaluation model by summarizing the opinions of the experts. Finally, the overall performance ranking of all alternatives can be obtained to assist the decision making. Taiwan semiconductor industry is the largest provider in worldwide market. It is vertically disintegrated and outsourcing is a main stream practice. Wafer-testing is a critical manufacturing step in the semiconductor supply chain that distinguishes whether the IC can meet the specifications. Consequently, it's crucial to establish a thorough model for selecting the wafer-testing vendors in order to achieve the success of the outsourcing operation. A case study of a Taiwan semiconductor company in selecting its wafer-testing outsourcing vendor by using the proposed MCDM technique is demonstrated to enhance the decision making quality. The results and proposed solution can be referred to by not only the semiconductor companies, but also other industries so that they can improve the vendor selection process in order to achieve a higher performance and satisfaction level. The number of people paying to download music is on the rise. Digital music files, mainly in MP3 format, have become widespread on the internet. Downloading digital products for free may harm creators and music publishers, because it is very easy to obtain free-music through peer-to-peer sharing technologies over the internet. At the same time, portable entertainment devices and mobile phones are now able to carry music files, enabling people to access music much more easily. On the other hand, with the coming of the 5G in the telecom infrastructure, the rise in downloading music using mobile devices becomes possible. People can access online-music platform services through cable/ADSL with their digital devices (e.g., Personal computer, Notebook and Smart phone) or through the telecom services accompanying their mobile devices. Therefore, a critical issue for record publishers, or digital music service providers, is how to provide services to create value and fulfill customer needs. By determining customer music service needs and intentions, this study identifies the selection criteria necessary for customers to evaluate and select digital music service platforms. A novel MCDM (Multiple Criteria Decision Making) technique is developed that integrates the Decision making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Analytical Network Procedure (ANP), and VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). This technique ranks and improves the digital music service platforms to obtain the best win-win service selection. This paper will propose the key driving aspects of the digital music service platforms and rank them by using the model proposed. The conclusions are composed of suggestions for service providers to improve their existing functions and plan further utilities for the digital music service platforms. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. At the moment of fast evolutions of high technology products, precise predictions of consumer behaviors can serve as the foundation of product/specification definitions. Traditionally, qualitative approaches (e.g. brain storming) or multivariate statistical (e.g. principal component analysis, factor analysis, etc.) were applied widely on consumer behavior analysis. However, the qualitative methods can be objective while the statistical approaches could be hard to be manipulated. Thus, a rule-based prediction method can be very helpful for analyzing and predicting consumer behavior. Moreover, precise prediction rules for consumer behavior being derived by the forecast mechanism can be very useful for marketers and designers to define the features of the products. Therefore, this research intends to define a Cluster Analysis (CA), Rough Set Theory (RST), flow graph (FG) and formal concept analysis (FCA) based forecast mechanism for predicting segmental consumer behavior. An empirical study on 124 Taiwanese 4G handset users was leveraged for verifying the feasibility of the proposed forecast mechanism. The empirical study results demonstrate the feasibility of this proposed framework. Meanwhile, the proposed consumer behavior forecast mechanism can be leveraged on defining features of other high technology products/services.Item type:Item, Developing Digital Content Industry in Taiwan(2007) ;Yu, Hsiao-Cheng ;Tsai, Hsin-Hann ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyAccording to predictions by PriceWaterHouseCoopers in 2004, the average global annual growth rate of digital video & audio products (VOD, MOD., etc) will reach 235%, wireless contents will reach 91%, and digital archives will reach 84%. This is due to the advancement, cost reduction and availability of the enabling technologies e.g. digital processing, digital storage and digital telecommunications. The development of Digital Content Industry (DCI) requires fine culture, initiative ideas, respect of intellectual property (IP) rights, and telecommunications infrastructure, which are all very dependent on government supportive policies. The empirical results show that in the long-run equilibrium, emissions appear to be energy use elastic and output inelastic. This elasticity suggests high energy use responsiveness to changes in emissions. The output exhibits a negative significant impact on emissions and does not support EKC hypothesis. These indicate that both economic growth and energy conservation policies can reduce emissions and no negative impact on economic development The causality results indicate that there is a bidirectional strong Granger-causality running between output, energy use and emissions, and whenever a shock occurs in the system, each variable makes a short-run adjustment to restore the long-run equilibrium. The average speed of adjustment is as low as just over 0.26 years. Hence, in order to reduce emissions, the best environmental policy is to increase infrastructure investment to improve energy efficiency, and to step up energy conservation policies to reduce any unnecessary waste of energy. That is, energy conservation is expected to improve energy efficiency, thereby promoting economic growth. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASE) is the world's leader in semiconductor assembly and testing. From 1998 to 2004, the two companies completed electronic integration of I I key business processes through the Internet. The result is a seamless interface between TSMC, ASE and their joint customers. They can now obtain accurate, timely information on their product status and respond appropriately when needed. While the direct economic benefits are estimated to be around US$ 10 million through productivity increase over a total investment of about US$ 2 million, the indirect benefits of this initiative could be on the order of US $100 million if the joint customers' benefits are considered. In collaboration with the RosettaNet organization, TSMC and ASE leveraged their pioneering experiences to define three data exchange standards which can then be widely adopted in the semiconductor industry. This case study is a demonstration of how two leading companies in their respective fields can join forces to make a difference in creating value for the entire semiconductor industry, which in turn benefits society at large. With the momentum continuing to build and the sphere of influence continuing to expand, it is anticipated that TSMC, ASE and the entire sector will upgrade their competitiveness in terms of cost, quality, responsiveness and customer orientation.Item type:Item, THE CEOs OF HSINCHU SCIENCE PARK(2009-11-01) ;Chang, Yu-Shing ;Lin, Tyng Ruu ;Yu, Hsiao-Cheng ;Chang, Shih-Chi科技管理研究所Item type:Item, The competitive advantages of Quanta Computer - The world's leading notebook PC manufacturer in Taiwan(2008) ;Chang, Shih-Chi ;Pan, Lee-Yun ;Yu, Hsiao-Cheng ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyQuanta was founded in 1988 by an Electrical Engineering (EE) engineer with the objective to manufacture laptop PCs. The process of ensuring the overall performance of the subcontractor is essential to a successful operation. Photomask is a major outsourcing item in the semiconductor manufacturing. Its complexity, precision, and quality requirements have become crucial for 90-nm technology node and beyond. However, the photomask outsourcing management is currently inadequate. The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework to resolve the inadequacies and enhance the photomask supply management in terms of quality, delivery, manufacturing management, and lower the risks and cost of photomask purchasing. The literature review of outsourcing, supply chain management, and information technology application has been conducted and obtained the most concerned management topics. In-depth interviews have also been performed with the experts in Taiwan's semiconductor industry to analyze the imperfection of current practice and fine-tune our proposed Internet-based supply management framework and system. Furthermore, this research has employed a real case study of a Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing company, which is the top 5 worldwide photomask buyer, to demonstrate the procedure, cost, and benefits. The estimated benefits of the proposed framework include overall performance improvement, significant cost reductions, and timely responses between suppliers and customers. This solution can be a general framework that is able to be tailored and applied in other supply domains in the semiconductor industry or other industries.Item type:Item, The radio frequency identification industry development strategies of Asian countries(2010) ;Wu, Nienchu ;Tsai, Hsin-Hann ;Chang, Yu-Shing ;Yu, Hsiao-Cheng科技管理研究所The radio frequency identification (RFID) system uses radio waves to remotely capture and process information stored in a tiny silicon chip. Various methods and tools are employed in current bioinformatics to screen, retrieve and analyze lead compounds from databases for drug design and industrial use, bringing marked advantages in terms of reducing the time and cost of studies. However, a pivotal point in lead compounds retrieval is the proper understanding and representation of their binding interactions. In this review we compare current methods used in virtual screening and post screening analysis of lead compounds which employ interaction profiles as a key feature. We also emphasize the use of such methods in mining novel compounds for manufacturing nutritional supplements, cosmetics and other industrial products.Item type:Item, The RFID industry development strategies of Asian countries(2007) ;Wu, Nienchu ;Chang, Yu-Shing ;Yu, Hsiao-Cheng ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyRadio Frequency Identification (RFID) system uses radio waves to remotely capture and process information stored in a tiny silicon chip. Continuous evolvement has driven the Integrated Circuit (IC) design service in becoming a critical and emerging sub-industry to the semiconductor value chain since year 2000. The IC design service companies are important enablers and mediators to integrate the IC design and manufacturing process in the semiconductor value chain. However, there is a lack of business or management related researches due to the fact that the IC design service industry is still in the emerging stage. Therefore, it is difficult to understand what competences an IC design service needs to possess in order to become successful. This research is composed of literature review and in-depth interviews with the focus group formed by the management members of the selected cases. Seven competences have been defined throughout the research as follow: IP design capability, integrated IP turnkey solution, customized design capability, integrated supply chain services for turnkey IC production, comprehensive design capability for various applications, effective reduction of new product development cost for customers, and integrated streamline manufacturing technologies for IC production. The contribution of this paper is to explore the essential competences of this emerging industry and to serve as a foundation for further extended researches.Item type:Item, Using DEMATEL method to explore the core competences and causal effect of the IC design service company: An empirical case study(2011-05-01) ;Lin, Ya-Ti ;Yang, Yeou-Herng ;Kang, Jin-Su ;Yu, Hsiao-Cheng經營管理研究所The booming of Integrated Circuit (IC) design service has become a critical sub-industry to the evolution of semiconductor industry. In this paper, we took the case of a tier one IC design service company to explore the core competences of this emerging industry. Seven core competences are defined throughout the research. More specifically, this paper analyzes the in-depth of the interrelation among the core competences by utilizing the DEMATEL method. They are divided into causal and effect groups, enabling readers to gain a better understanding of the interactive relationship between them, as well as making suggestions for improvement to enhance their overall performance. The result has shown that the Intellectual Property (IP) design capability is the most important core competence. Enhancing five of the core competences in the causal group will improve the overall performance. Further, DEMATEL method is demonstrated as a useful approach in exploring the interrelationship.
