Item type:Item, Adopting AHP Approach on Evaluation and Selection of Outsourcing Destination in East and Southeast Asia(2013) ;Chen, James K. C. ;Van Kien Pham ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyOutsourcing is regarded as one of the most popular strategies whereby firms can focus on core competencies when outsourcing to the rest of their overseas partners. Before companies step beyond their country boundaries, it is vital to evaluate and select the best destination for an outsourcing service. Unfortunately, only a few studies have been done to help firms make decisions in relation to evaluating a potential outsourcing partner. The purpose of this paper is to solve this problem by constructing a hierarchy model via the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach. In the study, seven typical outsourcing countries in the East and South East Asia (China, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) were chosen as possible alternatives for outsourcing companies based on four main evaluating criteria. These are: (1) cost competiveness; (2) human resources; (3) business and economic environments; (4) government policies and legal framework. Each criterion includes key sub-criteria as shown in the hierarchy model. The results showed that cost competiveness is the most important factor in the second level of the hierarchy and it results in the dominance of employee salary, taxes, freight price, and real estate costs respectively in the third level. For these reasons, China and Indonesia are the best outsourcing destinations. Besides, Vietnam and Thailand are emerging to be attractive countries due to their low labor costs and new government policies. Finally, the research meets the need of rational selection of the outsourcing countries and provides a great practical significance to practitioners.Item type:Item, An application of a foresight-based new product planning model A case study of a large household appliance manufacturer in China(2012) ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;Liu, Chun Yi ;Ho, Shun Chuan ;Kao, Hector K. M.Shen, Po ChangPurpose - Under such circumstances, how to assign the highest priority for future products which will create the greatest value will be the key success factor for a product planning model. The purpose of this study is to construct an improved planning model for new products based on the theoretical structures of technology roadmaps and patent analysis. Design/methodology/approach - This study takes the perspective of a product planning strategy, using technology roadmap developed by Institute of Manufacturing Technology of the University of Cambridge, combining with scenario planning and patent analysis. The main body of the proposed model is the technology roadmap of the product. Through patent analysis, the technology roalmap was integrated into the hierarchical execution of product planning to improve the disadvantages of the original technology roadmap and thereby clarify the content of the implemented procedure. With the planning of digital home products in a large household appliance manufacturer in China as a case study, the feasibility of the proposed model was verified. Findings - The improved planning model for new products comprised five planning phases: market scenario planning, product feature analysis, technological development analysis, patent combination analysis, and resource allocation. A matrix corresponding to product planning was established. The case study is to find out the developing trends in next-generation product features in six different scenarios of digital home for M, a home appliance manufacturer. There are five steps of the product planning model. The product planning model provides enterprises with integrated information from market demand, technology as well as patents. At the same time, it is easy to maintain and reproduce. The authors expect the model to make a contribution to practical product planning. Originality/value - This model should become an essential prediction tool for enterprises developing new products and can assist in decision-making and strategic implementation.Item type:Item, An assessment of exploiting renewable energy sources with concerns of policy and technology(2010-08-01) ;Shen, Yung-Chi ;Lin, Grace T. R. ;Li, Kuang-Pin ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C.科技管理研究所In recent years, the Taiwanese government has vigorously promoted the development of renewable energy to engage the challenges of gradual depletion of fossil fuels and oil, as well as the intensification of the greenhouse effect. Since the Sustainable Energy Policy Principles were announced in 2008, Taiwanese government has declared that the development of renewable energy should take into account goals that pertain to energy, the environment, and the economy (3E goals). This study aims to assess the 3E goals and renewable energy sources regulated by the Renewable Energy Development Bill that passed in 2009. The fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) is used to resolve the multi-goal problem for achieving our research purposes. That is, this research attempts to reveal the suitable renewable energy sources for the purposes of meeting the 3E policy goals. The results first show that environmental goal is the most important to the development of various renewable energy technologies in Taiwan, followed by the economic and energy goals. Additionally, hydropower, solar energy, and wind energy would be the renewable energy sources utilized in meeting the 3E policy goals. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. C. ;Tsai, Li-Min交大名義發表This paper suggests extending scores of technical efficiency as used in, for example, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to efficiency scores defined as so-called fuzzy intervals. Fuzzy scores allow the decision maker to use scores of technical efficiency in combination with other sources of available performance information e.g. expert opinions, key figures etc. In this sense, results of, DEA will be used to control the \'subjective\' information supplied by expert opinions while the subjective information will be used to supplement the narrow Input-output modeling of the production units used in DEA. So, fuzzy measures become formal images of the evaluation otherwise done implicitly by the decision maker.Item type:Item, INCREASING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE OF EMPLOYEES: EVIDENCE FROM RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TEAMS IN TAIWAN(2012) ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;Hsu, Wan-Lung ;Shieh, Jia-Horng ;Li, Kuang-Pin科技管理研究所Although the concept of emotional intelligence has captured the interest of researchers and the wider public, the mechanism by which transformational leadership exerts its influence on the development of emotional intelligence behavior of followers remains relatively unexplored. In this study we proposed a latent growth model, recruiting 342 employees from Taiwan information technology firms at multiple time points over a 6-month period to test the proposed model. The findings showed that, compared with their coworkers, those employees who perceived their leaders as demonstrating more transformational leadership at Time 1, were more likely than others to develop increases in emotional intelligence behavior over time, which consequently improved their task performance and led to the development of an increase in their organizational citizenship behaviors.Item type:Item, Key Consideration Factors of Adopting Cloud Computing for Science(2012) ;Yang, Chia-Lee ;Hwang, Bang-Ning ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThe scientific projects are characterized of requiring high performance computing resources, complex configuration environment, and massive storage. Compared with the traditional grid computing that has been employed by scientific projects for decades, the emerging cloud computing technology offers scientists an alternative of acceptable computing performance and massive storage required with lower infrastructure construction cost and more elastic and flexible system extendibility. Despite these enticing benefits and growing interest of exercising science cloud, there exist uncertainties and challenges that barricade the wide adoption of cloud computing in the scientific field. The goal of this paper is to identify the key consideration factors of adopting cloud computing for science and explore the interrelationship among them. We first developed a comprehensive hierarchy of consideration factors comprising four dimensions and ten underlying factors. Subsequently, we conducted an in-depth survey and interview of 22 domain experts who were actively involved in constructing Taiwan national science clouds. The surveyed data was finally analyzed by employing Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) technique to explore the influential network relationship of these consideration factors. Our findings suggest that Cost, Networking, and Elasticity are the top three dominant factors influencing the adoption of cloud computing for science.Item type:Item, Key Determinant Derivations for Information Technology Disaster Recovery Site Selection by the Multi-Criterion Decision Making Method(2015-05-01) ;Yang, Chia-Lee ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;Huang, Chi-Yo ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyDisaster recovery sites are an important mechanism in continuous IT system operations. Such mechanisms can sustain IT availability and reduce business losses during natural or human-made disasters. Concerning the cost and risk aspects, the IT disaster-recovery site selection problems are multi-criterion decision making (MCDM) problems in nature. For such problems, the decision aspects include the availability of the service, recovery time requirements, service performance, and more. The importance and complexities of IT disaster recovery sites increases with advances in IT and the categories of possible disasters. The modern IT disaster recovery site selection process requires further investigation. However, very few researchers tried to study related issues during past years based on the authors' extremely limited knowledge. Thus, this paper aims to derive the aspects and criteria for evaluating and selecting a modern IT disaster recovery site. A hybrid MCDM framework consisting of the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and the Analytic Network Process (ANP) will be proposed to construct the complex influence relations between aspects as well as criteria and further, derive weight associated with each aspect and criteria. The criteria with higher weight can be used for evaluating and selecting the most suitable IT disaster recovery sites. In the future, the proposed analytic framework can be used for evaluating and selecting a disaster recovery site for data centers by public institutes or private firms.Item type:Item, New Idea of Multi-Objective Programming with Changeable Spaces for Improving the Unmanned Factory Planning(2014-01-01) ;Gwo-HshiungTzeng ;Huang, Kuan-Wei ;Lin, Ching-Wei ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C.管理科學系Business decision-makers need various decision analyses to meet highly competitive environments. With increasing cost of intensive workforce and lowering marginal-profit products, how to break the limitation of resources and optimally reallocate all of the precious resources is the major issue to create the competitive advantages in the high-technology industry. Moreover, the second industrial upgrading has developed industrial robots in some production processes for providing more value-added production activities. Therefore, this study proposed a new idea of multi-objective programming with changeable spaces (decision space and objective space) named changeable spaces programming extending the concept of De Novo programming. The best production resources reallocation in re-designing the decision space can be considered how to improve the multi-objective of unmanned factory planning in a high-technology firm for achieving aspiration level. This method provides decision analysis planning and not only to reach ideal point but also how achieve aspiration level in resource reallocation/redesign. A numerical example illustrates how to release the trade-offs between industrial robots and a workforce subject to constrains of the wafer manufacturing and how stage by stage to improve each objective for closing aspiration level in objective space. Computational results are demonstrated supporting the proposed model is easily implemented with flexible effort in practical.Item type:Item, Special Issue on Managing Emerging Technologies and Industries in East Asia(2016-01-01) ;Su, Yu-Shan ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyWith the trend of globalization, many firms have come to stage where full utilization of own resource is no longer sufficient for industrial firms to keep sustainable competitive advantage in global market. Stimulating new industries from emerging technologies becomes essential for high-tech based economies to grow, increase employment opportunities and sustain competitive advantages. Recent studies show that Total Innovative Management (TIM) has been proposed to utilize knowledge economies advantages, integrate global resources to develop emerging technologies and undergo product innovation and technology breakthrough. In this paper we further extend the framework of TIM approach from firm level to the industrial cluster and regionalization. Under this framework, three stimulating mechanisms have been constructed to facilitate new industries from emerging technologies. These mechanisms encourage partnership in the commercialization process, foster entrepreneurship and venture initiatives in the innovation system and sustain commercialization and creation of new firms. The study of wireless communication industry in Taiwan has further illustrated this TIM framework through these proposed mechanisms to show the transformation of emerging technologies to new industries and regional clustering.Item type:Item, Technology Strategic Planning for an R&D Institute: The Case of Taiwan Textile Research Institute(2011) ;Jou, G. T. ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyTaiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI), a government-sponsored R&D institute in Taiwan, has conducted a technology strategic planning in September, 2009 to find its future R&D directions from 2011 to 2015. The Cross-SWOT methodology, which is analogous to TOWS[1], developed by IBM was adopted to arrange a series of educational seminars and brainstorming workshops for TTRI managing team. The information of global opportunities and threats (O/T) was collected from five aspects, i.e. social, technological, economic, ecological, and political (STEEP), whereas, the strengths and weaknesses (S/W) were identified by comparing TTRI with its five benchmarking organizations based on organizational capabilities. 24 people from TTRI managing team were divided into 2 groups. Each group consisted of 6 members from functional department heads and 6 members from cross-departmental project leaders and administrative staff. Through rational discussions and debates by providing proven data or reasons, 5 strategies and strategic areas (SA) were pinpointed: 2 attack strategies by maximizing TTRI strengths and external opportunities(S/O); 1 market creation strategies by utilizing TTRI strengths to avoid the threats(S/T); 2 transformation strategy by improving TTRI weaknesses to grab external opportunities(W/O). 5 strategic areas (SA) were further linked with 9 T-Plan themes to develop technology roadmap from 2011 to 2015.Item type:Item, THE EFFECTS OF PERCEIVED INTERACTIVITY ON E-TRUST AND E-CONSUMER BEHAVIORS: THE APPLICATION OF FUZZY LINGUISTIC SCALE(2013) ;Chu, Kuo-Ming ;Yuan, Benjamin J. C. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis paper identified the components of interactivity and investigated the impact of perceived interactivity on customer trust and transaction intentions in e-commerce. Data for this study were gathered in 2011 by means of a questionnaire administered to a convenience sample of 512 graduate students and business workers in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and Shanghai, China. Owing to the problem of dilution of measuring results due to the traditional linguistic value in which every scale interval is equal can be solved by using the fuzzy linguistic scale. Therefore, the empirical results indicate that the level of perceived interactivity is a major determinant of e-trust and e-loyalty through the fuzzy linguistic questionnaire. The findings suggest that perceived interactivity has positive effects on the user that ultimately result in e-loyalty behavior. Further, the fuzzy linguistic scale enables researchers not only to deal with different recognition styles, but also to notice differences in individuals by providing different linguistic variable combinations for researching purpose. Finally, the outcomes will be of interest to web designers and online marketers for how to enhance interactive online web applications.Item type:Item, Toward successful commercialization of university technology: Performance drivers of university technology transfer in Taiwan(2015-03-01) ;Hsu, David W. C. ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThe fuzzy front-end plays a most crucial part in new product development (NPD), leading to the success of product development and product launch in the market. This study proposes a novel method, TTRI_MP, by combining Crawford and Di Benedetto's model and Cooper's model, to strengthen the management of the fuzzy front-end. The proposed method comprises four stages: market exploration and technology forecasting, idea generation and segmentation, portfolio analysis and technology roadmapping (TRM). In the first stage, SWOT was utilized to identify the key strategic areas, and the technology readiness level (TRL) was adopted to position the level of developed technologies. In the second stage, the business concepts were required to go through the viability test and customers, collaborators, competitors and company (4C). In the third stage, the Strategic Position Analysis (SPAN) and Financial Analysis (FAN) developed by IBM were employed in the portfolio analysis to screen out potential NPD projects. In the last stage, the selected NPD projects were linked with their functions and technologies in the TRM chart. The method was successfully implemented by a research team working on a flexible fabric supercapacitor at the Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI).
