Item type:Item, Eye-Tracking Assisted Self-Directed Learning System(2015) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Fan, Chih-Tien ;Lin, Wei-Jun ;Peng, Zih-YouYuan, Shyan MingGuiding young learners\' attention improves their self-directed learning skills, and that attention can be analyzed via the learners\' eye movements. Thus, we propose a self-directed learning system integrating eye trackers with a web based interface to provide an attention guiding function that aims at notifying the learners about the ignored or the skipped parts from the learning material as well as providing hints about the confusing sections. We aim at implementing a cost-effective system that can be used by learners not only at school, but also at home. In conclusion, we believe that the proposed system can be considered as effective tool to enhance the learners\' self-directed learning skills.Item type:Item, Hybrid teaching assistant for developing students interactivity and comprehension(2007) ;Awwad, Yousef ;Lin, Hsien Tang ;Yuan, Shyan Ming ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceThe hybrid teaching assistant for developing interactivity and comprehension is a model to enhance students' learning by involving them in different testing types and discussions, providing them with advices and allowing them to send their feedbacks. The system makes use of the Internet and Communication Technologies (ICT) to provide a reliable and secure environment. The system consists of exams, discussions, query, charts and feedbacks. Web and mobile phone SMS are used as a communication base among the system's users. The system is hybrid two directional because students can answer the questions using the web form or the SMS form. In addition, students can receive advices and send their comments in both ways. Experiments results showed that students were more enthusiastic during the lesson, they were totally involved in the class room and they achieved better grades. Answers charts improved students' cooperation since they need to discuss the choices to find the correct answer.Item type:Item, In-domain neighborhood approach to heterogeneous dynamic load balancing in real world network(2013-01-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Yuan, Shyan Ming ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we present a novel in-domain neighborhood approach to clarify the dynamic load balancing problem on a heterogeneous network and to solve many practical problems. The distributed system consists of a network of workstations with different domains, speeds and capacities. Since the number of workstations and the diameter of the network affect the convergences rate, our approach introduces the in-domain relation that classifies the entire network into sub-networks called domains. The algorithm runs in each workstation in order to reach the fairness state in-domain and in entire network rapidly. In this paper, our approach is applied to a cafeteria system as a case study, each workstation is viewed as a cafeteria where the maximum number of orders that can be submitted to one cafeteria corresponds to the capacity of that cafeteria workstation, the communication channels are modeled between the in-domain cafeterias, and the workload is represented as orders. An algorithm is presented to simulate the migration of the orders between in-domain cafeterias and to distribute a proportion of the excessive workload of heavily loaded node to lightly loaded node by considering the capacity of each node such that when the algorithm terminates, the effective-load in all cafeterias is the same. Therefore, each workstation receives an amount of workload proportional to its total capacity. This framework is analyzed mathematically, and it is proved that the proposed algorithm converges and achieves the fairness state.Item type:Item, Mobile Phone Enabled Barcode Recognition for Preferences Monitoring(2011-01-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Lin, Chia-Feng ;Yuan, Shyan Ming ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we present an innovative software system called Preferences Monitoring that makes use of modern middleware technologies and available hardware and communication systems. People can use the system to easily buy products that fit with their preferences. The system consists of mobile-phone side to scan product barcodes, submit user inquiries to a server, and display results. Results are related to whether users can eat or drink the product based on their preferences such as religion (no meat, beef, pork, or wine), or based on health settings such as allergies, chronic diseases or calories. Also, the system includes web services to facilitate user access to online profiles for editing accounts, viewing history-shopping and subscribing to other services. The preliminary results of testing our system show that the system can provide useful services for consumers. We also highlight some technical issues that arc related to reading barcode using mobile phones.Item type:Item, Mobile Phone Enabled Barcode Recognition for Preferences Monitoring(2011-01-01) ;Daraghmi, Eman Yasser ;Lin, Chia-Feng ;Yuan, Shyan Ming ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityIn this paper, we present an innovative software system called Preferences Monitoring that makes use of modern middleware technologies and available hardware and communication systems. It is one of important and effective learning approaches by recording and reflecting student's' own learning attitude and learning performance and referring to others' learning portfolio daily. Although many of students know this approach, but seldom of them put this approach into action owing to the problem of preserving content of reflection and learning portfolio. In this paper, a networked learning reflection mechanism based on blog service is presented. Students can make their learning reflection and view others' with ease. An experiment was conducted at an Institute of Technology upon system completion. The experimental results show that there is a positive correlation between students' learning performance and attitude of learning reflection. It reveals that students who have better learning performance tend to make more reflection on their learning. More than 80% of students express this mechanism has positive affection on their learning.Item type:Item, Use of peer feedback to enhance elementary students' writing through blogging(2011-01-01) ;Chen, Yu Liang ;Liu, Eric Zhi Feng ;Shih, Ru Chu ;Wu, Chin TsungYuan, Shyan MingItem type:Item, Using RFID guiding systems to enhance user experience(2009) ;Lin, Hsien Tang ;Lin, Chia Feng ;Yuan, Shyan Ming ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer SciencePurpose - The purpose of this article is to present a guiding system with enhanced functionality based upon radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to promote a user friendly experience. Design/methodology/approach - Based on a user survey, the paper provides a guiding system using RFID with blog platform for further interaction. An example of this technology was built into a gallery at a college in Taiwan. Findings - This guiding system is defined as pull type because users actively pull the relevant information using RFID readers. With such functionalities, users have the opportunity to acquire information, using a mobile device, about a specific object in a context-aware manner. In addition, users can share ideas and comments related to the object on blogs with others who had visited or will visit the object or site. The user survey results showed that visitors seldom met the artists at an exhibition of their works, but desired to discuss and shares comments with them and other visitors. The proposed system addressees this need with a blog, and the user satisfaction survey confirmed that the proposed system met the requirements. Originality/value - The paper provides a guiding system to enhancing user experience by RFID and blog. The system also builds a channel between the creators of the artworks and others.Item type:Item, Web Resource Cacheable Edge Device in Fog Computing(2016-01-01) ;Fan, Chih-Tien ;Wu, Zong-You ;Chang, Che-Pin ;Yuan, Shyan Ming資訊科學與工程研究所The bandwidth of the network is precious. As cloud computing provides powerful computation power and more and more devices are connected to the Internet there is a need to seek for methods to reduce the traffic. Fog computing was proposed to adding the computation and storage ability to the edge devices. The requests from the end device can be preprocessed or even responded at the edge device. In this work, the ability of Web Resource Caching is added to the edge device to serve as a caching proxy server. In order to obtain more caching storage, the end devices are also exploits to provide some caching space. As the whole caching storage is enlarged, large resource like media files are able to be cached near to the end devices once any of the end devices in the same network just recently requested it. The result shows that the proposed architecture has better downloading latency compares to the single caching proxy approach.
