Item type:Item, Accurate real-time sensing tip for aqueous NO with optical fibers embedded in active hydrogel waveguide(2018-02-01) ;Chung, Chieh-Wen ;Tsai, May-Jywan ;Lin, Peng-Wei ;Huang, Ding-WenWang, Kuan-HsunA NO sensing tip is made by inserting two parallel optical fibers inside a poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (PolyHEMA) hydrogel waveguide mixed with the probe molecule 1, 2-Diaminoanthraquinone (DAQ). There is a length difference of 1 mm between the two fibers, and the light has to propagate through the difference from the short fiber to the long fiber. The total cross section area of the active hydrogel waveguide embedded with the fibers is only 3mm x 1.2 mm. For practical use the tip is housed in a needle for mechanical protection and the sensing tip is able to detect aqueous NO concentration around 1 mu M with time resolution about 5 minutes. Such a sensing tip can be used to monitor the medical conditions inside the brain after a stroke or a brain injury. Despite this critical need, there are few studies on the strain evolution of magnetic order in BiFeO3 films. Here, in (110)-oriented BiFeO3 films, we reveal that while the polarization structure remains relatively unaffected, strain can continuously tune the orientation of the antiferromagnetic-spin axis across a wide angular space, resulting in an unexpected deviation of the classical perpendicular relationship between the antiferromagnetic axis and the polarization. Calculations suggest that this evolution arises from a competition between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy wherein the former dominates at small strains and the two are comparable at large strains. Finally, strong coupling between the BiFeO3 and the ferromagnet Co0.9Fe0.1 exists such that the magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnet can be effectively controlled by engineering the orientation of the antiferromagnetic-spin axis.Item type:Item, Giant photoluminescence enhancement in tungsten-diselenide-gold plasmonic hybrid structures(2016-05-01) ;Wang, Zhuo ;Dong, Zhaogang ;Gu, Yinghong ;Chang, Yung-HuangZhang, LeiImpressive properties arise from the atomically thin nature of transition metal dichalcogenide two-dimensional materials. However, being atomically thin limits their optical absorption or emission. Hence, enhancing their photoluminescence by plasmonic nanostructures is critical for integrating these materials in optoelectronic and photonic devices. Typical photoluminescence enhancement from transition metal dichalcogenides is 100-fold, with recent enhancement of 1,000-fold achieved by simultaneously enhancing absorption, emission and directionality of the system. By suspending WSe2 flakes onto sub-20-nm-wide trenches in gold substrate, we report a giant photoluminescence enhancement of similar to 20,000-fold. It is attributed to an enhanced absorption of the pump laser due to the lateral gap plasmons confined in the trenches and the enhanced Purcell factor by the plasmonic nanostructure. This work demonstrates the feasibility of giant photoluminescence enhancement in WSe2 with judiciously designed plasmonic nanostructures and paves a way towards the implementation of plasmon-enhanced transition metal dichalcogenide photodetectors, sensors and emitters.Item type:Item, Land Subsidence in Chiayi, Taiwan, from Compaction Well, Leveling and ALOS/PALSAR: Aquaculture-Induced Relative Sea Level Rise(2018-01-01) ;Hung, Wei-Chia ;Hwang, Cheinway ;Chen, Yi-An ;Zhang, LeiChen, Kuan-HungChiayi County is located in the largest alluvial plain of Taiwan with extensive aquaculture and rice farming sustained by water extracted from groundwater wells. Chiayi is a typical aquaculture area affected by land subsidence, yet such lands worldwide combine to provide nearly 90% of global aquaculture products, greatly reducing oceanic overfishing problems. This study uses precision leveling, multi-layer compaction monitoring well (MLCW) and spaceborne SAR interferometry (InSAR) to examine the cause and effect of land subsidence in Chiayi associated with groundwater extractions and changes. Heights at benchmarks in a leveling network are measured annually and soil compactions at 24-26 layers up to 300-m depths at 7 MLCWs are collected at one-month intervals. Over 2007-2011, 15 ALOS/PALSAR images are processed by the method of TCPInSAR to produce subsidence rates. All sensors show that land subsidence occur in most parts of Chiayi, with rates reaching 4.5 cm/year around its coast, a result of groundwater pumping from shallow to deep aquifers. MLCWs detect mm-accuracy seasonal soil compactions coinciding with groundwater level fluctuations and causing dynamic compactions. Compactions near Taiwan High Speed Rail may reduce the strength of the rail's supporting columns to degrade its safety. The SAR images yield subsidence rates consistent with those from leveling and compaction wells after corrections for systematic errors by the leveling result. Subsidence in Chiayi's coastal area leads to relative sea level rises at rates up to 15 times larger than the global eustatic sea level rising rate, a risk typical for world's aquaculture-rich regions. At the fish pond-covered Budai Township, InSAR identifies subsidence spots not detected by leveling, providing crucial geo-information for a sustainable land management for aquaculture industry.Item type:Item, Manipulating magnetoelectric energy landscape in multiferroics(2020-06-05) ;Huang, Yen-Lin ;Nikonov, Dmitri ;Addiego, Christopher ;Chopdekar, Rajesh, VPrasad, BhagwatiMagnetoelectric coupling at room temperature in multiferroic materials, such as BiFeO3, is one of the leading candidates to develop low-power spintronics and emerging memory technologies. Although extensive research activity has been devoted recently to exploring the physical properties, especially focusing on ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism in chemically modified BiFeO3, a concrete understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling is yet to be fulfilled. We have discovered that La substitutions at the Bi-site lead to a progressive increase in the degeneracy of the potential energy landscape of the BiFeO3 system exemplified by a rotation of the polar axis away from the < 111 > (pc) towards the < 112 > (pc) discretion. This is accompanied by corresponding rotation of the antiferromagnetic axis as well, thus maintaining the right-handed vectorial relationship between ferroelectric polarization, antiferromagnetic vector and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector. As a consequence, La-BiFeO3 films exhibit a magnetoelectric coupling that is distinctly different from the undoped BiFeO3 films. BiFeO3 has a wide application but the impact of rare-earth substitution for the evolution of the coupling mechanism is unknown. Here, the authors reveal the correlation between ferroelectricity, antiferromagnetism, a weak ferromagnetic moment, and their switching pathways in La-substituted BiFeO3.Item type:Item, Monolithically Integrated Multi-Color (Blue and Green) Light-Emitting Diode Chips(2015) ;Teng, Chu-Hsiang ;Zhang, Lei ;Tsai, Yu-Lin ;Lin, Chien-ChungKuo, Hao-ChungAn LED chip with monolithically integrated, individually addressable multi-color pixels was demonstrated with a color tuning range from blue to green on a single epitaxial wafer.Item type:Item, Monolithically Integrated Multi-Color InGaN/GaN Nanopillar Light Emitting Diodes(2015) ;Teng, Chu-Hsiang ;Zhang, Lei ;Tsai, Yu-Lin ;Lin, Chien-ChungKuo, Hao-ChungItem type:Item, Remote sensing of glacier distribution and change over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(2016) ;Ke, Linghong ;Ding, Xiaoli ;Zhang, Lei ;Shum, C. K.Hwang, CheinwayGlacier change over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) provides an important clue to climate change in the remote high-altitude areas, and impacts various aspects of regional environment. Observations of mountain glaciers over the QTP are yet far from sufficient. Remote sensing techniques enable mapping and monitoring glaciers over an extensive region, from different dimensions and with regular revisit time. At present, mapping debris-covered glaciers and estimating glacier mass balances are one of the most challenging issues. This study illustrates the use of remote sensing techniques for glacier mapping and change detection, with multi-temporal and multi-source data. We show contrasting behavior of different type glaciers (temperate, semi-continental and continental) in three typical densely glacierized sub-regions of the plateau, mainly based on elevation data from ICESat and Landsat imagery. Glacier-climate interaction is analyzed further. Here we stress the challenges of applying remote sensing techniques for mapping and monitoring glaciers over the QTP, and prospects in future studies.Item type:Item, Smurf Downregulates Echinoid in the Amnioserosa To Regulate Drosophila Dorsal Closure(2017-06-01) ;Lin, Chiao-Ming ;Xu, Jiajun ;Yang, Wen-Ting ;Wang, ChaoLi, Yu-ChiaoDrosophila dorsal closure is a morphogenetic movement that involves flanking epidermal cells, assembling actomyosin cables, and migrating dorsally over the underlying amnioserosa to seal at the dorsal midline. Echinoid (Ed)-a cell adhesion molecule of adherens junctions (AJs)-participates in several developmental processes. The disappearance of Ed from the amnioserosa is required to define the epidermal leading edge for actomyosin cable assembly and coordinated cell migration. However, the mechanism by which Ed is cleared from amnioserosa is unknown. Here, we show that Ed is cleared in amnioserosa by both transcriptional and post-translational mechanisms. First, Ed mRNA transcription was repressed in amnioserosa prior to the onset of dorsal closure. Second, the ubiquitin ligase Smurf downregulated pretranslated Ed by binding to the PPXY motif of Ed. During dorsal closure, Smurf colocalized with Ed at AJs, and Smurf overexpression prematurely degraded Ed in the amnioserosa. Conversely, Ed persisted in the amnioserosa of Smurf mutant embryos, which, in turn, affected actomyosin cable formation. Together, our results demonstrate that transcriptional repression of Ed followed by Smurf-mediated downregulation of pretranslated Ed in amnioserosa regulates the establishment of a taut leading edge during dorsal closure.
