Item type:Item, A 0.55THz Y-Vector Network Configured Beam Steering Phased Array in CMOS Technology(2018-01-01) ;Zhao, Yan ;Al Hadi, Richard ;Lu, Hsin-Chia ;Tseng, Tzu-ShiuanZhang, YanA Y-vector oscillator network is devised to configure (sub)-mm-wave/terahertz (THz) beamforming systems with minimized footprint and energy consumption. It requires no traditional adjustable phase shifter at multi-channel front end which usually suffer from high insertion loss at these frequencies. A compact (1.4mm(2)) CMOS 1x4 Beam Steering Phased Array (BSPA) based on this network is validated at 0.55THz with +/- 30 degrees steering angle range. This is the first monolithic BSPA reported beyond 0.5THz.Item type:Item, A 183-GHz InP/CMOS-Hybrid Heterodyne-Spectrometer for Spaceborne Atmospheric Remote Sensing(2019-05-01) ;Kim, Yanghyo ;Zhang, Yan ;Reck, Theodore James ;Nemchick, Deacon J.Chattopadhyay, GoutamAcomplete 183-GHz CMOS/Indium Phosphide (InP) hybrid heterodyne-spectrometer is realized for spaceborne atmospheric remote sensing applications. It captures spontaneous emission from thermally populated pure rotational states for investigating Earth/planetary atmosphere and interstellar media. Recent missions such as the heterodyne instrument for far-infrared, the microwave limb sounder, and the microwave instrument for Rosetta orbiter highlighted the wealth of scientific knowledge that can be attained by utilizing heterodyne-spectrometers. However, major challenges still remain in mission cost, instrument size, weight, and power (SWaP). Highly integrated CMOS circuits are designed to prototype a low-cost/SWaP spectrometer system and conduct challenging science missions. Within the prototype system, a 183-GHz receiver with a frequency synthesizer is designed in the 28-nm CMOS, and a back-end 6-GS/s 4096-point spectrometer processor is designed in the 65-nm CMOS. The receiver's center frequency is tunable from 180 to 200 GHz. An external InP low-noise amplifier is added at the front-end to provide the required receiver sensitivity. The demonstrated 28-nm CMOS receiver and 65-nm CMOS spectrometer consume 515 mW under 1.5/1.15-V and 1500 mW under 1 V supply, respectively. The complete system achieves 700 to 1000 K noise temperature within the interested bandwidth and RMS uncertainty improvement up to 10 s integration according to the Allan deviation measurements. The spectrometer's capability in detecting gas phase molecular compounds is verified with laboratory trials employing water (H2O) and methyl-cyanide (CH3CN).Item type:Item, A Single Layer 3-D Touch Sensing System for Mobile Devices Application(2018-02-01) ;Du, Li ;Liu, Chun-Chen ;Zhang, Yan ;Li, YileiDu, YuanTouch sensing has been widely implemented as a main methodology to bridge human and machine interactions. The traditional touch sensing range is 2-D and therefore limits the user experience. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel 3-D contactless touch sensing called Airtouch system, which improves user experience by remotely detecting single/multi-finger position. A single layer touch panel with triangle-shaped electrodes is proposed to achieve multitouch detection capability as well as manufacturing cost reduction. Moreover, an oscillator-based-capacitive touch sensing circuit is implemented as the sensing hardware with the bootstrapping technique to eliminate the interchannel coupling effects. To further improve the system accuracy, a grouping algorithm is proposed to group the useful channels' data and filter out hardware noise impact. Finally, improved algorithms are proposed to eliminate the fringing capacitance effect and achieve accurate finger position estimation. EM simulation proved that the proposed algorithm reduced the maximum systematic error by 11 dB in the horizontal position detection. The proposed system consumes 2.3 mW and is fully compatible with existing mobile device environments. A prototype is built to demonstrate that the system can successfully detect finger movement in a vertical direction up to 6 cm and achieve a horizontal resolution up to 0.6 cm at 1 cm finger-height. As a new interface for human and machine interactions, this system offers great potential in finger movement detection and gesture recognition for small-sized electronics and advanced human interactive games for mobile device.Item type:Item, A W-Band FMCW Radar System-on-Chip Employing Synchronized Switching Digitally Controlled Artificial Dielectric for Chirp(2019-01-01) ;Tang, Adrian ;Kim, Yanghyo ;Zhang, Yan ;Huang, RulinChang, M. -C. FrankThis paper presents a fully integrated single-chip radar transceiver (including waveform generation) in 65nm CMOS technology. The single chip radar employs synchronously switched digitally controlled artificial dielectric (DiCAD) in order to extend the FMCW chirp bandwidth leading to higher axial radar resolutions. Measurements with a prototype device demonstrate a factor of 2 increase in chirp bandwidth although increase by larger factors is possible. The entire radar chip occupies 2.5 x 1.7 mm of silicon area and consumes 320 mW of DC power.Item type:Item, Context-Aware Middleware and Intelligent Agents for Smart Environments(2010-03-01) ;Arabnia, Hamid R. ;Fang, Wai-Chi ;Lee, Changhoon ;Zhang, Yan交大名義發表Item type:Item, Electricity generation based on vertically aligned PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 nanowire arrays(2012-05-01) ;Chen, Cheng-Ying ;Liu, Te-Hsiang ;Zhou, Yusheng ;Zhang, YanChueh, Yu-LunWe statistically demonstrated the electricity generation from individual vertically-aligned/epitaxial PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) nanowires (NWs) using a conductive atomic force microscope (AFM). The measured outputs were analyzed in reference to the theoretically calculated piezopotential distribution in a bent NW. Our results show that the performance of the PZT NWs for electricity generation is at the same level as that of ZnO NWs although the piezocoefficient of PZT is high, due to high relative dielectric constant of PZT. Systematic investigating piezoelectricity from single PZT NWs will be useful for optimizing the performance for PZT nanogenerator applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. As scientific goals become more ambitious, the FPGA-based solutions are showing limitations, especially with restricted launch vehicle capacity and available solar power. In this paper, modern integrated circuit technology is adopted to realize two fully integrated spectrometer SoCs to support spaceborne telescopic sensing. The system specifications are derived from the scientific principles of radio-frequency spectroscopy while each component strives for a simple and reliable implementation. Realized in 65-nm CMOS technology, Design A operates at 2.6 GHz with a three-bit ADC, a 2048-point FFT with 8192-point polyphase filter bank, and a billion-count accumulator. Design B more than doubles the bandwidth, reaches 6 GS/s by interleaving the ADC. The FFT size is also quadrupled to 8192. Both designs include integrated phase locked loops and tunable clock distribution networks. Design A consumes a peak power of 650 mW and Design B consumes 1.5 W. They represent the highest level of integration among similar endeavors and achieve orders of magnitude of improvement over traditional solutions in terms of size, weight, and power consumption. Both designs are actively involved in NASA's spectroscopy missions.Item type:Item, Local Cyber-Physical Attack for Masking Line Outage and Topology Attack in Smart Grid(2019-07-01) ;Chung, Hwei-Ming ;Li, Wen-Tai ;Yuen, Chau ;Chung, Wei-HoZhang, YanMalicious attacks in the power system can eventually result in a large-scale cascade failure if not rectified in a timely manner. These attacks, which are traditionally classified into physical and cyber attacks, can be avoided by using the latest advanced detection mechanisms. However, a new threat called cyber-physical attacks jointly targets both the physical and cyber layers of the system to interfere with the operations of the power grid is more malicious than traditional attacks. In this paper, we propose a new cyber-physical attack strategy where the transmission line is first physically disconnected, the line-outage event is masked to mislead the control center into detecting this as an obvious line outage at a different position in the local area of the power system. Therefore, the topology information in the control center is interfered with as a result of our attack. We also propose a novel procedure for selecting vulnerable lines and analyze the observability of our proposed framework. Our proposed method can effectively and continuously deceive the control center into detecting fake line-outage positions, and thereby increase the chance of cascade failure because the attention is given to the fake outage. The simulation results validate the efficiency of our proposed attack strategy.Item type:Item, Multi-Gbps Tri-Band 28/38/60-GHz CMOS Transmitter for Millimeter-Wave Radio System-on-Chip(2019-01-01) ;del Rio, David ;Yoon, Daekeun ;Chen, Fan-Ta ;Zhang, YanLiang, Chia-JenThis paper presents the design of a novel tri-band 28-nm CMOS transmitter for the 28, 38 and 60-GHz mm-wave bands. It consists of a 4-stage power amplifier preceded by a wideband active mixer. The PA employs wideband enhancing techniques and low-loss switches to achieve the tri-band operation, as well as a linearization loop to enhance the OP1dB by more than 3.5 dB. The PA exhibits a measured gain of 22/23/12 dB in the 3 bands and a Psat higher than 10 dBm. The transmitter CG is 10/15/4 dB and it is capable of transmitting a 1.5-Gbps modulated signal. The PA and the transmitter consume 430 and 431 mW of DC power and occupy 0.87 and 1.14 mm(2), respectively.
