Item type:Item, A review of the research on Internet addiction(2005-12-01) ;Chou, C ;Condron, L ;Belland, JC ;師資培育中心Center of Teacher EducationResearch indicates that maladaptive patterns of Internet use constitute behavioral addiction. This article explores the research on the social effects of Internet addiction. There are four major sections. The Introduction section overviews the field and introduces definitions, terminology, and assessments. The second section reviews research findings and focuses on several key factors related to Internet addiction, including Internet use and time, identifiable problems, gender differences, psychosocial variables, and computer attitudes. The third section considers the addictive potential of the Internet in terms of the Internet, its users, and the interaction of the two. The fourth section addresses current and projected treatments of Internet addiction, suggests future research agendas, and provides implications for educational psychologists.Item type:Item, Constructing a computer-assisted testing and evaluation system on the World Wide Web - The CATES experience(2000-08-01) ;Chou, C ;傳播研究所Institute of Communication StudiesThis paper describes applications of computer network technologies to testing and evaluation; reviews related research on computer assisted testing; and introduces the analysis, design, progress-to-date, and evaluation of the Computer-Assisted Testing and Evaluation System (CATES) currently under development at National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, R.O.C. This ellipsometer presents the advantages of both polarized optical heterodyne interferometry and optical photometry, which introduce a polarization modulation that is capable of performing with high-sensitivity on phase detection in real time. The twist angle Phi and the untwisted phase retardation Gamma of TN-LC are measured precisely. The experimental results verify that a TN-LC can be treated as identical to an elliptical retarder. The instructional systems development approach and the elaboration theory of instruction are introduced as the macro and micro stages of designing hypertext learning courses. The-development of a sample course is reported. Discussions and a conclusion are provided.Item type:Item, Developing the e-Delphi system: a web-based forecasting tool for educational research(2002-03-01) ;Chou, C ;教育研究所Institute of EducationItem type:Item, Developing web-based curricula: issues and challenges(2002-11-01) ;Chou, C ;Tsai, CC ;教育研究所Institute of EducationItem type:Item, Diagnosing students' alternative conceptions in science(2002-06-01) ;Tsai, CC ;Chou, C ;教育研究所 ;師資培育中心Institute of EducationThis study described an attempt to develop a networked two-tier test system. A two-tier test is a two-level multiple-choice question that diagnoses students' alternative conceptions in science. Three networked, two-tier test items were presented in this study. Students in Taiwan (555 14 year olds and 599 16 year olds) were asked to answer these items online. An analysis of students' answers suggested that students' alternative conceptions might be retained even after formal instruction about relevant conceptions. Moreover, their responses were related across these three two-tier test items. Further development of the two-tier test system will mainly focus on designing appropriate feedback and guidance that help students overcome their alternative conceptions. In this way, the networked two-tier test system is not only a diagnostic tool, but also an effective instructional tool. This study has illuminated some innovative thoughts for the research and practice of science education.Item type:Item, Experiencing CORAL: Design and implementation of distant cooperative learning(1996-08-01) ;Sun, CT ;Chou, C ;傳播研究所 ;資訊工程學系Institute of Communication StudiesThis paper describes application of information technologies to education, outlines the educational foundations and design strategies of the applications, and addresses related research issues, In this paper, we introduce the CORAL (COoperative Remotely Accessible Learning) system, currently under development at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, as an example of how information technologies are being used in science and engineering education.Item type:Item, Experiencing CORAL: Design and implementation of distant cooperative learning(1996-08-01) ;Sun, CT ;Chou, C ;傳播研究所 ;資訊工程學系Institute of Communication StudiesThis paper describes application of information technologies to education, outlines the educational foundations and design strategies of the applications, and addresses related research issues, In this paper, we introduce the CORAL (COoperative Remotely Accessible Learning) system, currently under development at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, as an example of how information technologies are being used in science and engineering education.Item type:Item, Incidences and correlates of Internet anxiety among high school teachers in Taiwan(2003-11-01) ;Chou, C ;教育研究所Institute of EducationOnce high schools are connected to the Internet, teachers are the key to the successful use of the Internet for both teaching and learning. Teacher anxiety, however, can often reduce the success of such technological and pedagogical innovations. The purpose of this study was to explore the Internet anxiety experience by Taiwan high school and vocational high school teachers. This study reviewed related literature in computer anxiety and discussed the further development of the Internet Anxiety Scale (IAS), which was used to survey 136 teachers in Taiwan. The statistical data produced by this study identified four aspects of Internet anxiety: Internet use, hardware construction, management of students' Internet-use, and learning computer-related skills and knowledge. Among these, survey respondents ranked anxiety over managing students' Internet-use as the highest problem. Further, results indicated that female teachers had significantly higher Internet anxiety than did male teachers, and teachers' majors or subject areas appeared to contribute significantly to the level of Internet anxiety as well. Results also showed that both computer-use hours per week and Internet-use hours per week were significantly negative factors when correlated with anxiety over Internet uses, hardware construction, and management of students' Internet-use. The author reviews the literature on the interactivity concept from the perspectives of communication, computer-assisted instruction, distance education, and interactive dimensions and functions for Web systems. A proposal is then made for a technical framework for including such dimensions and functions in Web-based learning systems. To enhance the framework's ease-of-use and overall effectiveness, each interactive function was submitted to two panels of experts for assessment and evaluation in terms of instructional necessity and programming difficulty. A discussion of the panels' feedback and the potential for future research concludes the article.Item type:Item, Internet addiction, usage, gratification, and pleasure experience: the Taiwan college students' case(2000-08-01) ;Chou, C ;Hsiao, MC ;傳播研究所Institute of Communication StudiesThis study explores Internet addiction among some of the Taiwan's college students. Also covered are a discussion of the Internet as a form of addiction, and related literature on this issue. This study used the Uses and Gratifications theory and the Play theory in mass communication. Nine hundred and ten valid surveys were collected from 12 universities and colleges around Taiwan. The results indicated that Internet addiction does exist among some of Taiwan's college students. In particular, 54 students were identified as Internet addicts, It was found that Internet addicts spent almost triple the number of hours connected to the Internet as compare to non-addicts, and spent significantly more time on BBSs, the WWW, e-mail and games than non-addicts. The addict group found the Internet entertaining, interesting, interactive, and satisfactory. The addict group rated Internet impacts on their studies and daily life routines significantly more negatively than the non-addict group. The study also found that the most powerful predictor of Internet addiction is the communication pleasure score, followed by BBS use hours, sex, satisfaction score, and e-mail-use hours.
