Item type:Item, A GaInP/GaAs HBT micromixer for 2.4/5.2/5.7-Ghz multiband WLAN applications(2004-10-05) ;Wang, CY ;Lu, SS ;Meng, CC ;Lin, YS電信工程研究所A GaInP/GaAs HBT micromixer for 2.4/5.2/5.7-GHz multiband WLAN applications is demonstrated. Our experimental results show that the input return loss |S-11| is below -25 dB from DC to 10 GHz with power-conversion gains of 11.7, 11.9, and 11.5 dB at frequencies of 2.4, 5.2, and 5.7 GHz, respectively. The wideband matching characteristic makes the micromixer very suitable for multiband applications. Input P-IdB is -4 dBm and IIP3 is 2.36 dBm. Port-to-port isolation is also quite satisfactory. In addition, the single-to-differential input stage in the Gilbert micromixer eliminates the need for common-mode rejection. A new rate control is introduced for the MP3 encoding algorithm, rather than the rate control in ordinary MP3. The computational complexity of the rate control is reduced by taking the loop-independent components outside the loop and accelerating the nonuniform quantizer using a hybrid scheme. The hybrid scheme includes a lookup-table method for smaller numbers and a linear piecewise approximation for larger numbers. A precise method for predicting the quantizer parameter is developed to decrease the number of times the rate control is execute. hybrid scheme is also used in MP3 decoding algorithm to accelerate the dequantization. However, the approximation for larger numbers is two-tier. The first tier is a linear piecewise approximation that yields a rough value. The second tier uses the rough value as the initial value of the first -order Newton's method to obtain a more closely approximated value. The precise method for prediction has a statistically hit rate of 43%, and the new rate control consumes no more than 4.5 MIPS. The proposed dequantization consumes no more than 2.38 MIPS, and has an error-to-signal ratio of under 0.012%. The implementation Of the complexity-reduced MP3 algorithm over 16bit fixed-point arithmetic is subjectively tested to evaluate the quality of the complexity-reduced MP3 algorithm.Item type:Item, A queue manager chip for shared buffer ATM switches(1996-11-01) ;Lin, YS ;Huang, HC ;Shung, CB ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsThis paper presents an efficient queue manager chip for controlling a 16 x 16 shared buffer ATM switch with a 256-cell buffer. Compared to conventional implementations of queue managers for shared buffer ATM switches, our design eliminates the idle address FIFO and the pre-allocated bubbles at the tails of output queues. The former reduces the storage size required for queue management, while the latter improves the effective buffer capacity. Such modular implementation also provides flexibilities in queue management implementation. Backpressure with soft-full and hard-full flow control for multi-stage expansion and two priority classes with push-out cell discarding are supported without extra hardware overhead. This chip was designed and fabricated using 0.8 mu m CMOS technology. It has 35,700 transistors in a chip area of 28.3 mm(2), with a core of 10.4 mm(2) and 31,960 transistors. Two test sequences were developed during the design phase to fully verify the queue management functions of the prototype chip. The queue manager chip was tested up to 36 MHz, and is able to control a 16 x 16 shared buffer switch with a 155 MHz link rate.Item type:Item, A queue manager chip for shared buffer ATM switches(1996-11-01) ;Lin, YS ;Huang, HC ;Shung, CB ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsThis paper presents an efficient queue manager chip for controlling a 16 x 16 shared buffer ATM switch with a 256-cell buffer. The pathogen cell concentration in an infected sample, however, is generally lower than that capable of being detected directly by MALDI-MS. Furthermore, the presence of proteins or metabolites in biological fluids always causes unavoidable interference for the identification of microorganism species. Vancomycin, which binds to D-Ala-D-Ala moieties on the cell walls of Gram-positive bacteria and, therefore, inhibits peptidoglycan synthesis, is one of the most potent antibiotics. Thus, we have employed vancomycin-modified magnetic nanoparticles as affinity probes to selectively trap Gram-positive pathogens from sample solutions; i.e., these bacteria can be isolated from sample solutions by applying a magnetic field. The isolated cells could then be characterized by MALDI-MS. This approach effectively reduces the interference of protein and metabolite signals in the mass spectra of Gram-positive bacteria because vancomycin has such high specificity for the D-Ala-D-Ala units of the cell walls. The lowest cell concentration we detected for both Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Staphylococcus aureus in a urine sample (3 mL) was similar to 7 x 10(4) cfu/mL.Item type:Item, An efficient architecture for multicasting in shared buffer ATM switches(1998-02-01) ;Lin, YS ;Shung, CB ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsMulticast ATM switches are essential to support various types of services in the Broadband ISDN. In this paper we present an efficient architecture to support multicasting in shared buffer ATM switcher. A lookahead technique is employed to resolve the head-of-line blocking problem in the multicast-queue approach, thus improving the throughput of the multicast traffic. The arbitration between multicast and unicast services is investigated to prevent the lookahead technique from increasing the multicast dominance. We show through performance and complexity comparisons that with a small hardware overhead over the multicast-queue approach, our architecture provides a throughput performance comparable to address-duplication or searchable-queue-based approaches.Item type:Item, "Buy domestic" campaigns and optimal tariffs(2003-10-01) ;Chiou, JR ;Hu, JL ;Lin, YS ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementThis paper attempts to analyze the strategic use of optimal tariffs and to examine the effects of national bias on the optimal trade policy and social welfare in a two-country, two-good, price competition model derived from Neven et al. (1991). The major findings are as follows. (1) If all consumers prefer the domestic good, then "buy domestic" campaigns will decrease the prohibitive tariff rate and increase local welfare. (2) If at least some consumers prefer the foreign good, but not to a great extent, then "buy domestic" campaigns will not change the optimal tariff rate, but may improve local welfare. (3) When all consumers greatly prefer the foreign good, then promotion of "buy domestic" decreases the optimal tariff rate, but it cannot improve social welfare. With this framework, we also prove that "buy domestic" campaigns serve as a substitute for tariffs with respect to a strategic trade policy.Item type:Item, Copper electroplating for future ultralarge scale integration interconnection(2000-03-01) ;Gau, WC ;Chang, TC ;Lin, YS ;Hu, JCChen, LJCopper has received considerable attention during the past few years because of its low electrical resistivity, high melting temperature, and high electromigration resistance. Since electrochemical plating has several advantages compared to physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition due to its low cost and low processing temperature, it becomes the most attractive technique for the implementation of Cu metallization. In this article, we report an electroplating scheme for Cu deposition and study aspects of copper electroplating related to chemical additives effected on Cu deposition. A low resistivity Cu him (similar to 2 mu Omega cm) could be obtained when metallic ion concentration is decreased or current density is increased. The detailed correlation between film resistivity, electrolyte concentration, current density, and film morphology is given in this study. In addition, chemical additives in electrolyte solutions also play important roles in copper electroplating. In this report, thiourea and polyethylene glycol, which are usually added in printing circuit board electroplating to influence nucleation, have been used as gap filling promoters to help Cu filling. The results show that addition of thiourea and polyethylene glycol could help in forming smooth Cu film but does not promote Cu filling ability. Hydroxyl amine sulfate, which has both amino and sulfate groups, is proposed for use as a gap filling promoter in helping Cu electroplating. In this work, we demonstrate that Cu could be electroplated into fine trenches (at 0.3 mu m dimension with aspect ratio of 3) when hydroxyl amine sulfate is present and no voids are formed. The per port hardware complexity of a knockout concentrator, however, does grow linearly with the switch dimension. In the paper, several approaches are investigated to reduce the complexity of the knockout while retaining the cell loss performance. A bufferless hierarchical concentrator architecture with reduced hardware complexity is derived. The concentrator complexity can be further reduced by introducing buffers in the concentrator, and the trade-off is analysed. Furthermore, output grouping may be applied in the buffered hierarchical concentrator to reduce the per port complexity. Two large-scale switch design examples are derived using the proposed design approaches, producing a complexity reduction ranging from 1.2% to 89.7%.Item type:Item, DiffServ edge routers over network processors: Implementation and evaluation(2003-07-01) ;Lin, YD ;Lin, YN ;Yang, SC ;Lin, YS資訊工程學系Network processors are emerging as a programmable alternative to the traditional ASIC-based solutions in scaling up the data plane processing of network services. A MALDI matrix, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,5-DHB), was hybridized with sol-gels to generate a sol-gel-derived material. Taking advantage of the characteristics of sol-gels, the sol-gel-derived material readily adhered to the surface of a glass chip through covalent bonding. Only one step of sample preparation, deposition of the sample solution on the glass chip, was required before MALDI-MS analysis. Because 2,5-DHB was homogeneously dispersed on the sol-gel network structure, good spot-to-spot reproducibility was obtained in MALDI analysis using this approach and the analyte signals were uniform throughout the chip. The modified glass chips were robust and effective for at least 1 week. This glass-chip-based matrix preparation method provides a straightforward approach to developing techniques for analyzing the on-chip enzymatic digestion of proteins and intact cells of microorganisms. Cytochrome C and Escherichia coli were used as analytes to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. The products of the on-chip enzymatic digests were identified through protein database searches. The suppression effects can be avoided if target species are isolated from complicated matrix solutions in advance. Herein, we proposed a novel method for achieving such a goal. We describe a strategy that uses gold nanoparticles to capture charged species from a sample solution. Generally, ionic agents, such as anionic or cationic stabilizers, encapsulate gold nanoparticles to prevent their aggregation in solution. These charged stabilizers at the surface of the gold particles are capable of attracting oppositely charged species from a sample solution through electrostatic interactions. We have employed this concept to develop nanoparticle-based probes that selectively trap and concentrate target species in sample solutions. Additionally, to readily isolate them from solution after attracting their target species, we used gold nanoparticles that are adhered to the surface of magnetic particles through S-Au bonding. A magnet can then be employed to isolate the Au@magnetic particles from the solution. The species trapped by the isolated particles were then characterized by MALDI MS after a simple washing. We demonstrate that Au@magnetic particles having negatively charged surfaces are suitable probes for selectively trapping positively charged proteins from aqueous solutions. In addition, we have employed Au@magnetic particle-based probes successfully to concentrate low amounts of peptide residues from the tryptic digest products of cytochrome c (10(-7) M).Item type:Item, Laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry on sol-gel-derived 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid film(2002-11-15) ;Lin, YS ;Chen, YC ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryThis work presents a novel method for direct desorption/ ionization of analytes from sol-gel-derived film. 2,5-Dihydroxy benzoic acid (DHB), a common MALDI matrix, was incorporated into a sol-gel polymeric structure. The sol-gel-derived DHB thin film can assist the mass analysis of analytes by laser desorption/ionization, with a matrix interference-free background in the mass spectra. The sol-gel-derived film can function as an energy absorber during laser irradiation because it contains DHB molecules. Furthermore, laser irradiation with normal laser power (70 -110 muJ) is not likely to generate any background ions from this sol-gel-DHB derived film. The samples were prepared straightforwardly. After a thin film was formed on a Parafilm membrane from the sol-gel-derived DHB solution coating, the sample solution was directly added to the top of the film, for laser desorption/ ionization mass analysis. The analyte signals were homogeneously obtained on the sol-gel-derived DHB film. Experimental results show that the optimum concentrations of DHB incorporated in the sol-gel solution were between 7500 ppm and 10 000 ppm, providing a matrix interference-free background. Analytes, including small proteins, peptides, amino acids, and small organics, were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. However, a higher laser power (> 110 muJ) than normal was required to desorb small proteins from the sol-gel-derived DHB film. Therefore, a few matrix ions desorbed from the thin film were generated during laser irradiation. The detection limit for both small molecules and proteins, using this sol-gel-assisted laser desorption/ ionization (SGALDI) mass spectrometry (MS), was as low as 81 fmol. However, a mass spectrometer with cutoffmass selection could detect 8.1 fmol of cytochrome c. The largest analyte observed by the SGALDI-MS in this study was myoglobin.Item type:Item, Molecular techniques to identify freshwater eels: RFLP analyses of PCR-amplified DNA fragments and allele-specific PCR from mitochondrial DNA(2002-10-01) ;Lin, YS ;Poh, YP ;Lin, SM ;Tzeng, CS生物科技學系Because of morphological ambiguity, traditional classification of freshwater eel elvers (of the genus Anguilla) has always been difficult and unreliable. This study analyzes 2 mitochondrial genes viz., cytochrome b and 12S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes from previous studies, to establish molecular standards for eel identification. Prediction of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) indicated that a combination of 3 enzyme results for cytochrome b revealed good resolution power. We also selected 39 specific nucleotide sites of the 2 genes at which the site is unique for individual species: thus these can potentially be used for identification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To verify the accuracy of our predictions, we examined 58 specimens from 4 species by DpnII and HaeIII digestions and by PCR amplification using species-specific primers. Consistent with the putative mutation rates, more than 95% and 99% of the specimens could be successfully identified by the RFLP and PCR methods, respectively. The molecular techniques developed here can be helpful in eel aquaculture and ecological studies.Item type:Item, Queue management for shared buffer and shared multi-buffer ATM switches(1996) ;Lin, YS ;Shung, CB ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsItem type:Item, Reactive bandwidth arbitration for priority and multicasting control in ATM switching(1997) ;Fang, SJ ;Lin, YS ;Yang, SC ;Shung, CB交大名義發表A new service scheduling scheme, reactive bandwidth arbitration (RBA), is proposed as an effective way to arbitrate the contention among priority classes or between unicast and multicast services in ATM switching. The RBA scheme integrates two previously proposed concepts: bandwidth allocation and reactive arbitration. In, RBA, guaranteed bandwidth is allocated to a connection at call setup based on the traffic characteristics and service requirements, while the arbitration of cell delivery takes into account the queue status to react to traffic fluctuation. Through simulation, we found that by bandwidth allocation, a set of queue threshold levels can be obtained to provide a good approximation to the desired delay performance. Furthermore, around this initial configuration, a linear relationship between the queue threshold and the resulting delay performance car be established to fine-tune the configuration parameters for the desired delay performance. Similar effects were observed as the RBA scheme was applied to arbitrate the contention between unicast and multicast connections in a shared buffer ATM switch. The proposed RBA scheme was incorporated in a queue manager chip for an 8 X 8 shored buffer ATM switch with four priority classes per port and link rate at 622 Mbps. The chip has 130k gates in a chip area of 137.88 mm(2) and operates at 25 MHz.Item type:Item, Reassessment of morphological characteristics in freshwater eels (genus Anguilla, Anguillidae) shows congruence with molecular phylogeny estimates(2005-05-01) ;Lin, YS ;Tzeng, CS ;Hwang, JK ;生物科技學系Department of Biological Science and TechnologyThe morphology-based phylogeny of freshwater eels, proposed by V. Ege in 1939, has been accepted as the basis of eel classification since that time. However, this has been called into question by recent molecular studies. Most of the morphological characteristics recognized by Ege are morphometric. Since methods for the application of morphometric data to phylogeny construction have not been fully established, it is unclear whether the observed discrepancies between morphological and molecular data arise from intrinsic differences or from flawed analyses. Here, we have used two methods to assemble evolutionary trees from distance matrices constructed according to Ege's data, the neighbor-joining (NJ) method and the minimum network (MinNet) method; the latter is based on an evolutionary algorithm. After reanalysing Ege's morphological data, we found that both methods gave results consistent with those based on molecular data, although not with Ege's original classification. Therefore, we speculate that some morphological features Ege used to subdivide the eel groups may not be synapomorphic as he proposed, but symplesiomorphic or convergent . The method developed here may prove useful for constructing phylogeny for taxon groups where only continuous morphometric characteristics are recognized, such as the freshwater eels.
