Optical MMW signals with 30-dB undesired sideband suppression ratios can be obtained. Since no optical filtering is required, the proposed system can be readily implemented in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) systems. V-band 60-GHz and W-band 80-GHz optical MMW signals are experimentally demonstrated. Because of the high undesired sideband suppression ratio, 60-GHz waveform with 50% duty cycle is observed. The single-sideband (SSB) phase noise of the generated 60-GHz signal is -73 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz. The proposed system is a viable solution for the future ultra-high frequency MMW applications up to 320 GHz using the external modulator with a limited bandwidth of 40 GHz. A 20-GHz radio-frequency (RF) 312.5-MSymbol/s M-ary phase-shift keying (PSK) signal and a baseband (BB) 1.25-Gb/s on-off keying signal are simultaneously generated and transmitted over an identical distributed infrastructure. The wired BB signal is compatible with the existing passive optical network (PON) system, and the wireless RF PSK signal can also share the same distributed infrastructure. The proposed system has no RF fading issue, no narrowband optical filter at remote node to separate the RF and BB signals, and can carry vector signals. Moreover, a frequency doubling for optical RF signal generation is achieved to reduce the bandwidth requirement of the transmitter. After transmission over 25-km standard signal-mode fiber, the receiver sensitivity penalties are less than 0.5 dB for both the RF and BB channels.Item type:Item, Hybrid Access Networks Integrated with Wireline and Wireless Services without Optical Filtering at Remote Nodes(2008) ;Shih, Po-Tsung ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Chen, Jason (Jyehong) ;Peng, Peng-ChunChi, SienA multi-services hybrid access network has been experimentally demonstrated. Lastly, the output optical signal is being delivered to an optical receiving device through an optical fiber transmission channel, and the optical receiving device can access the OOK signal and RF signal from the output optical signal. In addition, the present invention does not require remote nodes (receiver side) to use any optical filter to discern on-off keying signal from cable network and RF signal from wireless network. The present invention can also apply to the field of wavelength-division multiplexing system.Item type:Item, Optical millimeter-wave signal generation using frequency quadrupling technique and no optical filtering(2008-05-01) ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Shih, Po-Tsung ;Chen, Jason (Jyehong) ;Xue, Wen-QiangPeng, Peng-ChunThis letter demonstrates a novel method to generate high-purity optical millimeter-wave signals with carrier suppression by using a frequency quadrupling technique. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first time that a frequency quadrupling system requires only a single integrated Mach-Zehnder modulator without a narrowband optical filter to remove undesired optical sidebands. Since no optical filter is needed, fast frequency tuning is straightforward and this approach will be particularly attractive for optical up-conversion in wavelength-division-multiplexing radio-over-fiber systems. This letter provides both theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration. The generated optical millimeter-wave signals have very high quality with an optical carrier and harmonic distortion suppression ratio of more than 38 and 36 dB at 40 and 72 GHz, respectively.
