Item type:Item, A comprehensive study of temperature-dependent reflectance and photoluminescence of Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O thin films grown on c-Al(2)O(3)(2009-03-01) ;Lin, D. Y. ;Lin, H. J. ;Wu, J. S. ;Chou, W. C.Yang, C. S.We present a systematic study of temperature-dependent reflectance (R) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements on ZnMnO films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. For the first time, the three free-exciton transitions FX(A) (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(u)(7v)), FX(B) (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(9v)), and FX(C) (Gamma(7c)-Gamma(l)(7v)) and the longitudinal-optical phonon replicas of FX(B) and FX(C) of ZnMnO films have been clearly observed in the R spectra. The parameters describing the activation energy and the temperature dependence of the transition energy and broadening have been extracted by fitting the experimental R and PL spectra. The spectral data of ZnMnO films not only show the deterioration of crystalline quality with increasing Mn composition fraction but also indicate the Mn clustering caused by Mn atom segregation.Item type:Item, A comprehensive study of temperature-dependent reflectance and photoluminescence of Zn1-xMnxO thin films grown on c-Al2O3(2009-03-01) ;Lin, D. The nanocolumn material exhibits broadband and omnidirectional antireflective characteristics up to an incidence angle of 70 degrees for the 350-900 nm wavelength range for both s- and p-polarizations. Calculations based on a rigorous coupled-wave analysis indicate that the superior antireflection arises from the tapered column profiles which collectively function as a gradient-index layer. Since the nanocolumns have a preferential growth direction which follows the incident vapor flux, the azimuthal and polarization dependence of reflectivities are also investigated. The single ITO nanocolumn layer can function as antireflection contacts for light emitting diodes and solar cells.Item type:Item, Broadband and omnidirectional antireflection from conductive indium-tin-oxide nanocolumns prepared by glancing-angle deposition with nitrogen (Retracted article. F. ;Lai, J. Y. ;Luo, C. W.Chou, W. C.Self-assembled CdTe/ZnSe Stranski-Krastanow quantum-dot (QD) structures, which have a CdSe-like precursor-layer (PCL) between CdTe quantum dots and ZnSe matrix, were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The carrier dynamics of the structures was studied by photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements. The temperature-dependent PL spectra revealed that there is a carrier transformation from small dots to larger dots via the precursor layer. Temperature-dependent PL measurements verify the existence of the QD excited excitonic state in 5.0 mono-layer (ML) coverage. In 0.6 ML coverage, the TRPL spectra exhibited a double-exponential decay process, as the detection energy at PCL emission energy. The faster decay time is corresponded to the carrier lifetime in PCL, the slower decay time exhibits the carrier in small QD. However, in 5.0 ML coverage, a faster and slower decay time represents the carrier lifetime in QD excited state for larger QD and the carrier lifetime in QD ground state for smaller QD.Item type:Item, Catalyst-free highly vertically aligned ZnO nanoneedle arrays grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy(2009-11-01) ;Wang, J. S. ;Yang, C. S. ;Chen, P. I. ;Su, C. F.Chen, W. J.This work describes the growth of highly vertically aligned ZnO nanoneedle arrays on wafer-scale catalyst-free c-plane sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy under high Zn flux conditions. The photoluminescence spectrum of the as-grown samples reveals strong free exciton emissions and donor-bound exciton emissions with an excellent full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1.4 meV. The field emission of highly vertically aligned ZnO nanoneedle arrays closely follows the Fowler-Nordheim theory. The turn-on electric field was about 5.9 V/A mu m with a field enhancement factor beta of around 793.Item type:Item, Chirped-pulse control of carrier dynamics in low-temperature grown GaAs(2011) ;Lee, Chao-Kuei ;Lin, Sung-Hui ;Yang, C. S. ;Pan, Ci-Ling物理研究所In this work, using chirped pulse excitation pump-probe technique, we present the results of a study of carrier dynamics modulation in low-temperature-grown GaAs. Increasing carrier relaxation times as varying the excitation chirped conditions from negative to positive is demonstrated and explained by spectral dependence of carrier dynamics in Shockley-Read Hall model. We also indicate that chirped pulse has the feasibility of controlling carrier dynamics in ultrafast optical devices.Item type:Item, Conventional vs Unconventional Magnetic Polarons: ZnMnTe/ZnSe and ZnTe/ZnMnSe Quantum Dots(2014-01-01) ;Barman, B. ;Tsai, Y. ;Scrace, T. ;Murphy, J. R.Cartwright, A. N.We used time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy to compare the properties of magnetic polarons in two related, spatially indirect, II-VI epitaxially grown quantum dot systems. In sample A (ZnMnTe/ZnSe), the photoexcited holes are confined in the magnetic ZnMnTe quantum dots (QDs), while the electrons remain in the surrounding non-magnetic ZnSe matrix. In sample B (ZnTe/ZnMnSe) on the other hand, the holes are confined in the non-magnetic ZnTe QDs and the electrons move in the magnetic ZnMnSe matrix. The magnetic polaron formation energies, E-MP, in these samples were measured from the temporal red-shift of the excitonic emission peak. The magnetic polarons in the two samples exhibit distinct characteristics. In sample A, the magnetic polaron is strongly bound with E-MP = 35 meV. Furthermore, E-MP has unconventionally weak dependence of on both temperature T and magnetic field B-appl. In contrast, magnetic polarons in sample B show conventional characteristics with E-MP decreasing with increasing temperature and increasing external magnetic field. We attribute the difference in magnetic polaron properties between the two types of QDs to the difference in the location of the Mn ions in the respective structures.Item type:Item, Effect of ZnSe partial capping on the ripening dynamics of CdSe quantum dots(2007-02-19) ;Lai, Y. J. ;Yang, C. S. ;Chen, W. K. ;Lee, M. C.Chang, W. H.The ripening dynamics of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) partially capped with ZnSe layer are investigated. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images show that the ripening of QDs is dramatically accelerated by depositing a ZnSe partial capping layer. The driving force of ripening enhancement is attributed to the increasing strain energy with capping thickness. For a ZnSe partial capping layer of below 3 ML, photoluminescence exhibits a clear redshift with increasing ZnSe monolayers. It is attributed to the size of the CdSe QD increases with ZnSe partial capping, in a manner that is consistent with the results of the AFM study. A. ;Luo, Y. Z. ;Chung, J. M.Tang, S. J.In this report, various organic Alq3 amorphous layers are prepared by vacuum deposition at different substrate temperatures T-sub (from 30 to 180 degrees C). The surface morphology, structural information, electrical and optical properties of these as-deposited layers are investigated by atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, J-E curves, and photoluminescence studies, respectively. Furthermore, a temperature dependence of dark electrical conductivity sigma(T) deduced from J-E curves of these organic amorphous layers is presented. Finally, effects from T-sub on the physical properties of these organic Alq3 amorphous layers are discussed and a model based on a thermal interconversion between Alq3 isomers is proposed to explain these experimental results.Item type:Item, Efficiency Enhancement of GaN/InGaN Vertical-Injection Light Emitting Diodes Using Distinctive Indium-Tin-Oxide Nanorods(2009) ;Yang, C. S. ;Lai, Y. J. ;Luo, C. W.Chen, D. S.The growth mode of CdTe quantum dots ( QDs) grown on highly lattice-mismatched ZnSe buffer was investigated. CdTe QDs ( 0.6 to 5.0 mono-layers ( MLs)) were deposited on the Se-stabilized ZnSe buffer layers using an alternating supply of Cd and Te atomic sources. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence ( PL) measurements revealed the existence of a CdSe-like two-dimensional precursor layer ( PCL). The prominent difference in the temperature-dependent PL peak shift was associated with the emissions from the respective CdSe PCL and CdTe QDs. In addition, the PL excitation measurement demonstrated the existence of the first QD excited excitonic state.Item type:Item, Gold nanoparticles: BSA (Bovine Serum Albumin) coating and X-ray irradiation produce variable-spectrum photoluminescence(2015-01-15) ;Lee, Kuo-Hao ;Lai, Sheng-Feng ;Lin, Yan-Cheng ;Chou, Wu-ChingOng, Edwin B. L.We show that by using different x-ray irradiation times of BSA-coated Au nanoparticles (NPs) we can change their ultraviolet-stimulated photoluminescence and shift the spectral weight over the visible spectral range. This is due to the interplay of two emission bands, one due to BSA and the other related to gold. The emission properties did not change with time over a period of several months. H.Yang, C. S.Self-assembled type-II ZnTe quantum dots (QDs) were grown on GaAs (0 0 1) substrates with Zn1-xMgxSe (x=0.24 and 0.52) buffer layers by molecular beam epitaxy. The optical properties of ZnTe QDs were investigated by low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL. An abrupt variation of the PL peak energy with coverage implies the existence of wetting layer of 3.2 MLs and 40 MLs for the Mg concentration x=0.24 and 0.52, respectively. The thickness of wetting layer is larger than that of Zaire QDs grown on ZnSe buffer layers because the strain between ZaTe and Zn1-xMgxSe is smaller. The non-mono-exponential decay profiles reflect the processes of carrier transfer and recapture. The Kohlrausch\'s stretching exponential well fits the decay profiles of ZaTe/Zn1-xMgxSe QDs. Y. ;Chen, H. H. ;Hua, T. E.Chen, S. T.Our experimental results demonstrate that full-field hard-X-ray microscopy is finally able to investigate the internal structure of cells in tissues. This result was made possible by three main factors: the use of a coherent (synchrotron) source of X-rays, the exploitation of contrast mechanisms based on the real part of the refractive index and the magnification provided by high-resolution Fresnel zone-plate objectives. We specifically obtained high-quality microradiographs of human and mouse cells with 29 nm Rayleigh spatial resolution and verified that tomographic reconstruction could be implemented with a final resolution level suitable for subcellular features. We also demonstrated that a phase retrieval method based on a wave propagation algorithm could yield good subcellular images starting from a series of defocused microradiographs. The concluding discussion compares cellular and subcellular hard-X-ray microradiology with other techniques and evaluates its potential impact on biomedical research. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. S. ;Liou, M. J. ;Wu, C. X.Chiu, K. C.This work investigated the influence of Zn/O flux ratio and Mn-doped ZnO buffer layer on the epitaxial growth of ZnO grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on c-plane sapphire substrates. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements indicated that a small amount residual strain of ZnO epilayers was further relaxed under stoichiometric growth conditions due to the better surface migration of the adatoms. Moreover, we observed that a small amount of Mn doping led to obtain a flatter surface with stronger lattice relaxation maybe due to the greatly enhanced surface migration of the adatoms. By adding a Mn-doped ZnO buffer layer the optical and electrical properties of the ZnO epilayers had significant improvement. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. H.The sigma(+) and sigma(-) circularly polarized time-integrated and time-resolved Photoluminescence (PL) measurements were employed to investigate the carrier spin dynamics of ZnMnTe/ZnSe Quantum Dots (QDs) grown on GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The Kohlrausch's stretching exponential function well correlates both the sigma(+) and sigma(-) decay profiles. The measured spin relaxation time is about 23 ns. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
