Heuristic dispatching rule to maximize TDD and IDD performance

Although mean flow time and tardiness have been used for a long time as indicators in both manufacturing plants and academic research on dispatching rules, according to Theory of Constraints (TOC), neither indicator properly measures deviation from production plans. TOC claims that using throughput dollar-day (TDD) and inventory dollar-day (IDD) can induce the factory to take appropriate actions for the organization as a whole, and that these can be applied to replace various key performance indices used by most factories. However, no one has studied dispatching rules based on TDD and IDD performance indicators. The study addresses two interesting issues. (1) If TDD and IDD are used as performance indicators, do those dispatching rules that yield a better performance in tardiness and mean flow time still yield satisfactory results in terms of TDD and IDD performance? (2) Does a dispatching rule exist to outperform the current dispatching rules in terms of TDD and IDD performance? First, a TDD/IDD-based heuristic dispatching rule is developed to answer these questions. Second, a computational experiment is performed, involving six simulation examples, to compare the proposed TDD/IDD-based heuristic-dispatching rule with the currently used dispatching rules. Five dispatching rules, shortest processing time, earliest due date, total profit, minimum slack and apparent tardiness cost, are adopted herein. The results demonstrate that the developed TDD/IDD-based heuristic dispatching rule is feasible and outperforms the selected dispatching rules in terms of TDD and IDD.
Photoluminescence of ZnSexTe1-x/ZnTe multiple-quantum-well structures grown by molecular-beam epitaxy

This work investigates photoluminescence (PL) spectra from ZnSexTe1-x/ZnTe multiple-quantum-well structures grown on GaAs(001) substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The PL data reveal that the band alignment of the ZnSexTe1-x/ZnTe system is type II. The thermal activation energy for quenching the PL intensity was determined from the temperature-dependent PL spectra. The activation energy was found to increase initially and then decrease as the thickness of the ZnSexTe1-x layers decreases from 7 to 3 nm. The temperature-dependent broadening of the PL linewidth was also investigated. The LO-phonon scattering was found to be the dominant broadening mechanism. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.
Using biofunctionalized nanoparticles to probe pathogenic bacteria

In this paper, we report a method for fabricating biofunctionalized nanoparticles by attaching human immunoglobulin (IgG) onto their surfaces through either electrostatic interactions or covalent binding. We found that these IgG-presenting nanoparticles can bind selectively to the cell walls of pathogens that contain IgG-binding sites based on the investigation of transmission electron microscopy images. Our results demonstrate that such Au-IgG nanoparticles may serve as useful nanoscale probes for exploring the interactions between IgG and pathogens. Furthermore, the IgG-presenting magnetic nanoparticles have been employed as effective affinity probes for selectively concentrating traces of target bacteria from sample solutions. The trapped bacteria were then characterized by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. The lowest cell concentration we detected for both Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Staphylococcus aureus in aqueous sample solutions (0.5 mL) was similar to3 x 10(5) cfu/mL, while the detectable cell concentration for S. saprophyticus in a urine sample was similar to3 x 10(7) cfu/mL.
A model-selection-based self-splitting Gaussian mixture learning with application to speaker identification

We propose a self-splitting Gaussian mixture learning (SGML) algorithm for Gaussian mixture modelling. The SGML algorithm is deterministic and is able to find an appropriate number of components of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based on a self-splitting validity measure, Bayesian information criterion (BIC). It starts with a single component in the feature space and splits adaptively during the learning process until the most appropriate number of components is found. The SGML algorithm also performs well in learning the GMM with a given component number. In our experiments on clustering of a synthetic data set and the text-independent speaker identification task, we have observed the ability of the SGML for model-based clustering and automatically determining the model complexity of the speaker GMMs for speaker identification.
