Bis(2,2-diphenylvinyl)spirobifluorene: An efficient and stable blue emitter for electroluminescence applications

We have synthesized a spirobifluorene-based DPVBi [4,4'-bis(2,2-diphenylvinyl)-1,1'-biphenyl] analogue, DPVSBF [2,7-bis(2,2diphenylvinyl)-9,9'-spirobifluorene], in which the bis(2,2-diphenylvinyl) groups are connected through the 2 and 7 positions of the spirobifluorene framework, and have characterized its thermal properties, electronic properties (viz. absorption and photoluminescence), and electrochemical behavior. The presence of the rigid spirobifluorene linkage imparts significant improvement in the material's glass transition temperature and morphological stability, while preserving most of the photophysical and electronic properties of its non-spiro, biphenyl analogue, DPVBi. Organic electroluminescent devices having the structure ITO/NPB/DPVSBF/AlQ/LiF/Al display bright emissions with a lambda(max) at 474 nm (CIE coordinates: 0.16, 0.24) and exhibit maximum luminescence exceeding 40,000 cd/m(2). At a driving current density of 100 mAcm(2) (6.4 V), a luminance of 4110 cd/m(2) was obtained with external quantum efficiency of 2.54%, luminance efficiency of 4.1 cd/A, and power efficiency of 2.0 lm/W. Moreover, the DPVSBF-based device exhibits a 16-fold enhancement in the operation lifetime relative to that of a similar device based on DPVBi. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Optical properties of nanosize aggregation of phenylene vinylene oligomers

In this paper, we report the experimental results on the optical properties of oligo-phenylene vinylenes (OPVs) formed in nanosize pores of porous silicon substrates. Strong modifications of the photoluminescence properties of nanosize aggregation of OPVs were observed at room temperature, such as a blue shift of the PL spectra, whereas the structure of the oligomers is preserved as proved by Raman scattering experiments. However, the penetration of the oligomers into the nanopores was found to depend on the conformation of the chains, which is, in turn, conditioned by the solvents, used to dissolve the oligomer powder. Injectio-locking laser-diode-based OC-192 optical non-return-to-zero-to-return-to-zero OR logic gate

An OC-192 optical return-to-zero- (RZ-) formatted OR logic gate is experimentally demonstrated and theoretically interpreted for the first time to our knowledge. It is implemented by using a data format converter based on an optically injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) modulated in below-threshold condition. By injecting two non-return-to-zero data streams into the FPLD-based OR gate, a peak-power-equalized RZ-formatted OR logic data stream extinction ratio of > 8 dB is obtained from the FPLD with optimized rf-modulating and optical injecting powers of 24.7 and >-4 dBm, respectively. The highest data rate of up to 12.5 Gbits/s with a bit error rate (BER) of 10(-13) at a received optical power of >-16 dBm can be achieved by increasing the de bias current of the FPLD-based RZ-formatted OR logic gate to 8 mA. The OR-gated RZ data stream exhibits a duty cycle (pulse width) of similar to 27% (27 ps) and a 0.5 dB power penalty at a BER of 10(-9) at a data rate of 9.953 Gbits/s. An efficient tunable diode-pumped Nd:GdVO4 laser at 1083 nm has been constructed by suppressing the higher gain transition near 1063 nm. With 12.5 W diode pump power, the free-running output power centered about 1083 nm was up to 3.4 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 30.1%. When a simple uncoated etalon was used as a wavelength-selective element, the output power at each helium transition was higher than 2.5 W. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Photodissociation dynamics of formyl fluoride (HFCO) at 193 nm: Branching ratios and distributions of kinetic energy

Following photodissociation of formyl fluoride (HFCO) at 193 nm, we detected products with fragmentation translational spectroscopy utilizing a tunable vacuum ultraviolet beam from a synchrotron for ionization. Among three primary dissociation channels observed in this work, the F-elimination channel HFCO -> HCO+F dominates, with a branching ratio similar to 0.66 and an average release of kinetic energy similar to 55 kJ mol(-1); about 17% of HCO further decomposes to H+CO. The H-elimination channel HFCO -> FCO+H has a branching ratio similar to 0.28 and an average release of kinetic energy similar to 99 kJ mol(-1); about 21% of FCO further decomposes to F+CO. The F-elimination channel likely proceeds via the S-1 surface whereas the H-elimination channel proceeds via the T-1 surface; both channels exhibit moderate barriers for dissociation. The molecular HF-elimination channel HFCO -> HF+CO, correlating with the ground electronic surface, has a branching ratio of only similar to 0.06; the average translational release of 93 kJ mol(-1), similar to 15% of available energy, implies that the fragments are highly internally excited. Detailed mechanisms of photodissociation are discussed. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.
