Item type:Item, An isolated Candida albicans TL3 capable of degrading phenol at large concentration(2005-12-01) ;Tsai, SC ;Tsai, LD ;Li, YK ;應用化學系應用化學系分子科學碩博班An isolated yeast strain was grown aerobically on phenol as a sole carbon source up to 24 mm; the rate of degradation of phenol at 30 degrees C was greater than other microorganisms at the comparable phenol concentrations. This microorganism was further identified and is designated Candida albicans TL3. The catabolic activity of C. albicans TL3 for degradation of phenol was evaluated with the K-s and V-max values of 1.7 +/- 0.1 mm and 0.66 +/- 0.02 mu mol/min/mg of protein, respectively. With application of enzymatic, chromatographic and mass-spectrometric analyses, we confirmed that catechol and cis,cis-muconic acid were produced during the biodegradation of phenol performed by C. albicans TL3, indicating the occurrence of an ortho-fission pathway. The maximum activity of phenol hydroxylase and catechol-1,2-dioxygenase were induced when this strain grew in phenol culture media at 22 mm and 10 mm, respectively. In addition to phenol, C. albicans TL3 was effective in degrading formaldehyde, which is another major pollutant in waste water from a factory producing phenolic resin. The promising result from the bio-treatment of such factory effluent makes Candida albicans TL3 be a potentially useful strain for industrial application.Item type:Item, Airline flight frequency determination in response to competitive interactions using fuzzy logic(2005-12-01) ;Hsu, CI ;Wen, YH ;運輸與物流管理系 註:原交通所+運管所Department of Transportation and Logistics ManagementThis study determines the flight frequencies on an airline network in response to anticipated airline competitive interactions using fuzzy logic. It is expressed as an optimization problem to be solved in the medium-term airline network-planning phase, and it deals with tactical decisions made one season or one year in advance. The proposed model includes three submodels-an airline market share model, a flight-frequency programming model, and a fuzzy-logic-based competitive interaction model. Flight frequencies on an airline network with competitive interactions are analyzed by combining these three submodels. A case study, demonstrating the feasibility of applying the proposed model, confirms that the competitive interactions will converge. The results of this study confirm the accuracy of the proposed model and their flexibility of the decision-making involved in determining flight frequencies on an airline network in competitive and uncertain environments. This paper analyzes the regional development of China by examining economic performance and environmental factors. Technical efficiency and productivity changes in 31 regions of China are computed for the period 1997-2001. In the case of regional GDP, the fast-developing eastern (coastal) regions experience higher technical efficiency and productivity growth than the inland central and western regions. When environmental factors are incorporated, the eastern regions still perform better than inland regions, both from static and dynamic analysis. This phenomenon is termed the 'double deterioration' of the inland areas in China. Double deterioration is attributed to the lack of economic resources to replace highly-polluting production equipment and technology in those less developed regions.Item type:Item, Item type:Item, Reduction of particle reentrainment using porous fence in front of dust samples(2005-12-01) ;Huang, CH ;Lee, CI ;Tsai, CJ ;環境工程研究所Institute of Environmental EngineeringWind tunnel experiments were conducted to measure the emission factor of particle reentrainment from a dust sample with or without a porous fence. The effect of wind velocity, fence porosity, and distance between the fence and the dust sample on the emission factor was studied. A 20% porous fence was found to be effective for reducing the particle reentrainment at a low wind velocity of 5 m/s. When the wind velocity was increase from 7 to 15 m/s, the results show that the particle reentrainment can also be reduced in a certain region behind the fence (x/H<4, x=distance between fence and sample; H=fence height) for the 20% porous fence. A linear multivariable regression model was fitted to the logarithmically transformed experimental data. The good fit of the regression model makes it possible to estimate emission rate as a function of the dimensionless distance (x/H), the wind velocity, and the elapsed time.Item type:Item, Oxide-trap-enhanced Coulomb energy in a metal-oxide-semiconductor system(2005-12-01) ;Lu, MP ;Chen, MJ ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsCoulomb energy is essential to the charging of a nanometer-scale trap in the oxide of a metal-oxide-semiconductor system. Traditionally the Coulomb energy calculation was performed on the basis of an interfacelike trap. In this paper, we present experimental evidence from a 1.7-nm oxide: Substantial enhancements in Coulomb energy due to the existence of a deeper trap in the oxide. Other corroborating evidence is achieved on a multiphonon theory, which can adequately elucidate the measured capture and emission kinetics. The corresponding configuration coordinate diagrams are established. We further elaborate on the clarification of the Coulomb energy and differentiate it from that in memories containing nanocrystals or quantum dots in the oxide. Some critical issues encountered in the work are addressed as well.Item type:Item, 諾貝爾生理醫學獎得主Phillip A. Sharp博士蒞校訪問(國立陽明大學, 2005-12-01)陽明電子報編輯小組諾貝爾生理醫學獎得主Phillip A. In this paper, we propose a mobility support for mobile host roaming between WLAN and GPRS networks. In addition, a handoff decision model is presented to reduce the latency of the handoff procedure. The experimental results, including throughput, packet delay and handoff latency are given to show the performance of our approach. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Based on that review, topology-aided cross-layer fast handoff designs are proposed for Mobile IP over IEEE 802.11 networks. Time-sensitive applications, such as voice over IP (VoIP), cannot tolerate the long layer-2. plus layer-3 handoff delays that arise in IEEE 802.11/Mobile IP environments. Cross-layer designs are increasingly adopted to shorten the handoff latency time. Handoff-related layer-2 triggers may reduce the delay between layer-2 handoff completion and the associated layer-3 handoff activation. Cross-layer topology information, such as the association between 802.11 access points and Mobile IP mobility agents, together with layer-2 triggers, can be utilized by a mobile node to start layer-3 handoff-related activities, such as agent discovery, address configuration, and registration, in parallel with or prior to those of layer-2 handoff. Experimental results indicate that the whole handoff delay can meet the delay requirement of VoIP applications when layer-3 handoff activities occur prior to layer-2 handoffs.Item type:Item, A novel Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on dual-ARROW structures for sensing applications(2005-12-01) ;Hsu, SH ;Huang, YT ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsA novel Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on dual antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROWs) for sensing is proposed. By adjusting the degree of structural symmetry to control the coupling behavior of the dual ARROW, an interferometric sensor without any bending structure can be realized. Operating principles and simulation characteristics of the device are discussed in detail. The refractive-index detection limit of the order of 10(-5) is achieved.Item type:Item, Connect6(2005-12-01) ;Wu, IC ;Huang, DY ;Chang, HC ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceThis note introduces the game Connect6, a member of the family of the k-in-a-row games, and investigates some related issues. Finally, the note describes the current developments of Connect6 and lists five new challenges.Item type:Item, HANet: a framework toward ultimately reliable network services(2005-12-01) ;Jiang, YJ ;Chang, DW ;Chang, RC ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceHigh availability is becoming an essential part of network services because even a little downtime may lead to a great loss of money. According to previous research, network failure is one of the major causes of system unavailability. In this paper, we propose a framework called HANet for building highly available network services. The main goal of HANet is to allow a server to continue providing services when all its network interfaces to the outside world (i.e., public interfaces) have failed. This is achieved by two techniques. First, a network interface can be backed up not only by other public network interfaces, but also by other inter-server I/O communication interfaces (i.e., private interfaces) such as Ethernet, USB, RS232, etc. Therefore, IP packets can still be transmitted and received via these I/O links, even when all of the public network interfaces have failed. Second, HANet allows a server to take over the packet transmission job of another network-failed server. The benefit of HANet is that a network-failed server will not lose any requests which are being processed. And, it is efficient since no synchronization overhead or replaying process is required. Moreover, it is totally transparent to server applications and clients. To demonstrate the feasibility of HANet, we implemented it in the Linux kernel. According to the performance results, using a private Fast Ethernet interface for data communication leads to only 1% overhead in user-perceived latency when the public Fast Ethernet interface of the server has failed. This indicates that HANet is efficient, and hence is feasible for commercial network services. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. Instruction guided by the conflict map emphasizes not only the use of discrepant events, but also the resolution of conflict between students' alternative conceptions and scientific conceptions, using critical events or explanations and relevant perceptions and conceptions that explicate the scientific conceptions. Two ninth grade science classes in Taiwan participated in this quasi-experi mental study in which one class was assigned to a traditional teaching group and the other class was assigned to a conflict map instruction treatment. Students' ideas were gathered through three interviews: the first was conducted I week after the instruction; the second 2 months afterward; and the third at 8 months after the treatment. Through an analysis of students' interview responses, it was revealed that many students, even after instruction, had a common alternative conception that seasons were determined by the earth's distance to the sun. However, the instruction guided by the framework of the conflict map was shown to be a potential way of changing the alternative conception and acquiring scientific understandings, especially in light of long-term observations. A detailed analysis of students' ideas across the interviews also strongly suggests that researchers as well as practicing teachers need to pay particular attention to those students who can simply recall the scientific fact without deep thinking, as these students may learn science through rote memorization and soon regress to alternative conceptions after science instruction. Here, the wavelet coefficients of the input image are rearranged to form the wavelet trees that are composed of the corresponding wavelet coefficients from all the subbands of the same orientation. A simple tree classifier has been proposed to group wavelet trees into two classes based on the amplitude distribution. Each class of wavelet trees is encoded using an appropriate procedure, specifically either SPIHT or VQ. Experimental results show that advantages obtained by combining the superior coding performance of VQ and efficient cross-subband prediction of SPIHT are appreciable for the compression task, especially for natural images with large portions of textures. For example, the proposed hybrid coding outperforms SPIHT by 0.38 dB in PSNR at 0.5 bpp for the Bridge image, and by 0.74 dB at 0.5 bpp for the Mandrill image.
