Unfortunately, the application of xerogels is limited due to their poor mechanical properties and poor structural maintenance of entrapped biomaterials. In this study, the availability of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-modified silica sol-gel (TEOS/PDMS Ormosil) glass in the immobilization of enzymes and its application in the fabrication of amperometric biosensor was investigated. We demonstrated that most of activity of encapsulated horseradish peroxidase can be preserved in PDMS-modified SiO2 glass compared with conventional silica xerogel. The synthesized monoliths exhibited high transparency and crack-free. The enzyme electrode based on glucose oxidase encapsulated TEOS/PDMS Ormosil glass on Pd electrode was fabricated and characterized electrochemically. The characteristics of the biosensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The biosensor exhibited a series of good properties: high sensitivity (1.63 mu A mM(-1) analyte), short response time and high reproducibility. The results indicate that TEOS/PDMS Ormosil glass has great potential to the immobilization of biomaterials as well as the fabrication of biosensors. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Single-crystal characterization of 2,8-di(6,7-dimethyl-3-phenyl-2-quinoxalinyl)-5H-5 lambda(6)-dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-5,5-dione indicates a triclinic crystal structure with space group P1 and a non-coplanar structure. These new materials are amorphous, with glass-transition temperatures ranging from 132 to 194 degrees C. The compounds (Cpd) exhibit high electron mobilities and serve as effective electron-transport materials for organic light-emitting devices. Double-layer devices are fabricated with the structure indium tin oxide (ITO)/Qn/Cpd/LiF/Al, where yellow-emitting 2,3-bis[4-(N-phenyl-9-ethyl-3-carbazolylamino)phenyl]quinoxaline (Qn) serves as the emitting layer. An external quantum efficiency of 1.41 %, a power efficiency of 4.94 lm W-1, and a current efficiency of 1.62 cd A(-1) are achieved at a current density of 100 mA cm(-2).Item type:Item, Real-time human identification using a pyroelectric infrared detector array and hidden Markov models(2006-07-24) ;Fang, Jian-Shuen ;Hao, Qi ;Brady, David J. ;Guenther, Bob D.Hsu, Ken Y.This paper proposes a real-time human identification system using a pyroelectric infrared ( PIR) detector array and hidden Markov models ( HMMs). A PIR detector array with masked Fresnel lens arrays is used to generate digital sequential data that can represent a human motion feature. HMMs are trained to statistically model the motion features of individuals through an expectation-maximization ( EM) learning process. Human subjects are recognized by evaluating a set of new feature data against the trained HMMs using the maximum-likelihood ( ML) criterion. We have developed a prototype system to verify the proposed method. Sensor modules with different numbers of detectors and different sampling masks were tested to maximize the identification capability of the sensor system. It was found that the front side luminance intensity of double roughened LED was 2.77 times higher than that of the conventional LED at an injection current of 20 mA. The backside luminance intensity was 2.37 times higher than that of the conventional LED. This is because the double roughened surfaces can provide photons multiple chances to escape from the LED surface, and redirect photons, which were originally emitted out of the escape cone, back into the escape cone.Item type:Item, Control of the spin Hall current in two dimensional electronic gas(2006-07-24) ;Cheche, T. O. ;Barna, E. ;電子物理學系Department of ElectrophysicsThe intrinsic spin Hall conductivity is obtained for a two-dimensional electronic gas (2DEG) in the presence of strain, Rashba coupling, and an external in-plane applied magnetic field. The conduction electrons of [001] oriented quantum well are used to model the 2DEG. The spin current value is dependent on the stress applied in direction [111].Item type:Item, Evaluating performance of post-tensioned steel connections with strands and reduced flange plates(2006-07-25) ;Chou, Chung-Che ;Chen, Jun-Hen ;Chen, Yu-Chih ;Tsai, Keh-Chyuan土木工程學系The seismic performance of post-tensioned steel connections for moment-resisting frames was examined experimentally and analytically. Cyclic tests were conducted on three full-scale subassemblies, which had two steel beams post-tensioned to a concrete-filled tube (CFT) column with high-strength strands to provide recentring response. Reduced flange plates (RFPs) welded to the column and bolted to the beam flange were used to increase the dissipation of energy. Test results indicated that (1) the proposed buckling-restrained RFP could dissipate energy in axial tension and compression, (2) the subassemblies could reach an interstorey drift of 4% without strength degradation, and (3) buckling of the beam occurred towards an interstorey drift of 5%, causing a loss of the strand force, the recentring response, and the moment capacity. A general-purpose non-linear finite element analysis program (ABAQUS) was used to perform a correlation study. The behaviour of the steel beam under both post-tensioning and flexural loadings was compared to the test results and predictions. The differential equations allow degeneracy at two end points and the assumption on mild degeneracy is not required in this study. The regularity result is proved by an alternative argument. Uniqueness of the weak solutions of the differential equations is a direct consequence from this Holder continuity. When an access request for a web page from a browser is sent, by analyzing the web page content returned from the web site, we can decide whether the page is allowed or not, by early blocking and early bypassing algorithms. It allows making the decision as early as we have enough confidence that the web content should belong to some forbidden category or a normal one. Therefore, the web content determination speed can be improved and users' waiting time can be reduced. Moreover, by the present method, the network gateway devices will be allowed to analyze more web content.Item type:Item, Defect states investigation in poly(2-methoxy,5-(2 ' ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV)(2006-07-26) ;Nguyen, T. P. ;Le Rendu, P. ;Gaudin, O. ;Lee, A. J. T.Jackman, R. B.in this study, application of the charge based Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (Q-DLTS) has been extended to poly(2-methoxy,5-(2ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) single layer diodes, whose cathode consisted of aluminium and anode of indium tin oxide (ITO). The results reveal a broad Q-DLTS spectrum, with at least two maxima, consistent with a complex distribution of trap states. Only the Q-DLTS maximum with the shortest relaxation time could be fully resolved over the temperature range used here (100-300 K), yielding activation energies and capture cross sections in the ranges 0.3-0.4 eV and 10(-20) 10(-18) cm(2), respectively. It will be shown that this energy level is likely related to a majority-carrier (hole) trap, consistent with a Poole-Frenkel injection mechanism and p-type doping of the MEH-PPV film. The origin of the second (non-resolved) Q-DLTS peak will also be discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. It was shown that two out-of-plane bending modes mediate the dynamic mode coupling between 1469 and 1379 cm(-1) and between 1603 and 1469 cm(-1). These couplings are considered to be associated with geometrical relaxation relevant to the neutral bipolaron formation in all-s-trans polyacetylene. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. It intends to eliminate the need of wires and connectors between a variety of devices, like PCs and their peripherals, walkmans and their earphones, etc. Bluetooth provides robust and secure wireless radio communication of both data and voice, even when the devices are not within line-of-sight. Bluetooth employs the 2.4 GHz ISM band, sharing the same band with the Wireless LAN (WLAN) implementing the IEEE 802.11 series standard. While WLANs and WPANs are complementary rather than competing technologies, the likelihood of mutual interference may occur unexpectedly, which may impact the performance of either severely. In this paper, we propose a Bluetooth channel state dependent data segmentation and reassembly (CSD-SAR) scheme and a queue state dependent priority (QSD-PR) scheduling policy. The CSD-SAR maintains a receiving frequency table to predict channel conditions and selects the best packet type and packet size to transmit data. In this way, it not only masks bad frequencies without delaying transmission but also leads to the best performance with high link utilization in error-prone environments. In addition, the QSD-PR also uses the receiving frequency table to avoid bad frequencies and gives a selected master-slave pair, which has more queued data to send between each other, a higher priority to eliminate the wastage of slots. The conventional scheduling policy, Round Robin (RR), yields poor performance with the time division duplex based MAC protocol and results in slot wastage and may not ensure fairness. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme achieves better link utilization and higher throughput with bounded delay compared to the RR scheme in error-free and error-prone environments. Our scheme can also eliminate interference to other wireless networks that share the same spectrum, such as WLANs, by avoiding selecting channels occupied by other networks. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Zhu, J. Chem. Phys. 105, 4159 (1996)] with the certain symmetry transformation. This symmetry comes from a detailed analysis of the reduced scattering matrix for Landau-Zener type of crossing as a special case of nonadiabatic transition and nonadiabatic tunneling. Traditional classification of crossing and noncrossing types of nonadiabatic transition can be quantitatively defined by the rotation angle of adiabatic-to-diabatic transformation, and this rotational angle enters the analytical solution for general nonadiabatic tunneling. The certain two-state exponential potential models are employed for numerical tests, and the calculations from the present general nonadiabatic tunneling formula are demonstrated in very good agreement with the results from exact quantum mechanical calculations. The present general nonadiabatic tunneling formula can be incorporated with various mixed quantum-classical methods for modeling electronically nonadiabatic processes in photochemistry. A breatherlike mode modulation of both the amplitude and frequency of the C = C stretching was observed for the first time. It generates two sidebands of 2238 and 700 cm(-1) with a separation of 769 cm(-1) corresponding to the modulation frequency. The latter mode is very close to the C-S-C ring deformation, which indicate that this mode mediates coupling between the breather mode and the C-beta-C-beta stretching mode. It was also found that the breather-type excitation has a longer lifetime (2-3 ps) than in all-trans-polyacetylene (50 fs) due to its confinement. This cell can be switched between tilted-homeotropic state and twisted state under the applied voltage as low as 5 V. The reason for the low switching voltage is attributed to the dielectric anisotropy character of DFLC. The analysis also shows that the switching wave form accelerates the switching behaviors of the directors which results in faster response in BHN LC cell. The ratios of 1/1 cycloadducts 3a-d to 4a-d in THF solution were about 1/1 in the four different nitrile oxides 2a-d studied and microwave was found to accelerate the reactions and enhance their yields. It is noteworthy that the regioselectivity of 3a/4a was enhanced to 71/29 in beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) aqueous solution compared to that of 40/60 in the absence of P-CD. The regioselectivity of 3b/4b was further enhanced to 99/1 when 4-tert-butylphenyl hydroximinoyl chloride (9b) was complexed with beta-CD and then proceeded to react with 1; this is in sharp contrast with that of 33/67 in the absence of beta-CD. The binding constant of 1 center dot beta-CD in acetone-d(6)/D2O (1/1) was determined to be 188 +/- 9 M-1 by H-1 NMR titration experiments. The binding mode of 1 center dot beta-CD was further determined by ROESY experiment. Furthermore, molecular dynamic simulations were carried out to provide information of the complexation modes of 1 center dot beta-CD, 3a center dot beta-CD, 4a center dot beta-CD, 9a center dot beta-CD, and 9b center dot beta-CD. It was found that both steric and electrostatic effects play important roles in determining the regio- and stereochemistry of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of 1. Finally, beta-CD is shown to serve as a chiral shift reagent to differentiate the enantiomers of 4a in H-1 NMR. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. L.Wu, Y. S.In this letter, the authors introduce a GaAs/AlGaAs based unitraveling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) for a wavelength of around 830 nm. There is significant bias- and output-current-dependent bandwidth enhancement phenomena observed with this device. According to their microwave and optical-to-electrical measurement results, such distinct phenomena can occur under a much lower current density (0.3 mA/mu m(2) vs 0.05 mA/mu m(2)) than previously reported for InP-InGaAs UTC-PDs. This can be attributed to the self-induced field in the absorption region, made possible due to the optimized p-type doping profile. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
