    Instantaneous Drug Delivery of Magnetic/Thermally Sensitive Nanospheres by a High-Frequency Magnetic Field

    Novel dual-functional nanospheres composed of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles embedded in a thermo-sensitive Pluronic F127 (17127) matrix were successfully synthesized by an in situ coprecipitation process. The nanospheres were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Experimental observations indicated that the F127 was subjected to a rapid structural change when the magnetic phase caused rapid heating after a short exposure to a high-frequency magnetic field. During the field duration, considerable volume shrinkage of the nanospheres (2.3-fold diameter reduction) was detected. This has been translated to an instantaneous release of a drug, Doxorubicin (DOX), when the DOX was encapsulated within the nanospheres. Such a rapidly responsive release of the DOX from the nanospheres was due to an intimate contact between the nanomagnet and F127, where an effective thermal and mechanical transfer between core and shell phases efficiently took place in the presence of the magnetic field.

    Controlled Growth of Nanofiber Network Hole Collection Layers with Pore Structure for Polymer-Fullerene Solar Cells

    In this study, we compare a series of hole collector layers (HCLs) with pore structure fabricated via an electrochemical method to construct polymer-fullerene solar cells. The HCLs with a pore structure can offer a large interface to enhance hole collection; however, the series resistances are also increased by the relatively pore morphology. Photovoltaic device with the largest short circuit current (J(sc)) and efficiency is achieved using poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDoT) as HCLs due to its highly porous structure and reasonable series resistance. By further optimizing the thickness of the HCLs in the solar cell, a power efficiency of 3.57% under simulated sun light is achieved.

    Infrared electroabsorption spectroscopy is used to study the trans/gauche conformational equilibrium and associated thermodynamic parameters of the two conformers of liquid 1,2-dibromoethane at room temperature. Electric-field modulation induces an increase in the population of the gauche conformer that has the permanent dipole moment and a decrease in that of the trans conformer that has a center of inversion symmetry and hence no dipole moment. The Gibbs free energy difference DG and the entropy difference Delta S between the gauche and trans conformers are obtained as 4.5 kJ mol(-1) and -2.7 J K(-1) mol(-1), respectively, using the reported enthalpy difference.     Fabrication and Characterization of Anodic Titanium Oxide Nanotube Arrays of Controlled Length for Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

    The performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC), made of highly ordered anodic titanium oxide (ATO) nanotube (NT) arrays produced directly on Ti foil, depends on the length of these arrays. We controlled these lengths L from 4 to 41 mu m while varying the concentration (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.8 wt %) of the electrolyte (NH(4)F) in ethylene glycol in the presence of H(2)O (2 vol %) with anodization for various periods (t = 0.5-8 h). The compact and bundle layers introduced. during anodization were effectively removed upon simple ultrasonic cleaning in deionized water containing submicrometer particles of Al(2)O(3) in a small proportion. The photovoltaic performance of the NT-DSSC devices (NH4F at 0.5 wt %) made of ATO films, as prepared, increased from 3.0% to 5.2% as L was increased from 6 mu m (t = 0.5 h) to 30 mu m (t = 8 h). After treatment of the ATO films with TiCl(4) in a two-step annealing process, the optimized NT-DSSC device attained an overall efficiency of 7.0% power conversion.

    Three-Dimensional Coherent Optical Waves Localized on Trochoidal Parametric Surfaces

    We theoretically demonstrate that the three-dimensional (3D) coherent laser waves formed by the degenerate Laguerre-Gaussian modes with different longitudinal indices are well localized on rotating trochoidal parametric surfaces. We further use a large-Fresnel-number laser system to realize the existence of the laser modes related to trochoidal coherent states. Experimental results reveal that the exotic laser modes generally originate from a superposition of two degenerate standing-wave trochoidal coherent states.
