This micro-needle array, with 250 um in height and 35 um in diameter, was placed onto skin and penetrated the cuticle yet not reaching the corium layer, so as to avoid pain and bleeding but achieve superior light transmission efficiency. For PDT applications, this design can significantly reduce the required incident power and therefore avoid additional damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Practical in-vivo test on human skin demonstrates the improved power transmission efficiency (PTE) of two types of needle arrays is 1.41 and 1.71 times better than the condition without using micro-needle array.Item type:Item, Fast-lock all-digital DLL and digitally-controlled phase shifter for DDR controller applications(2010-05-10) ;Sheng, Duo ;Chung, Ching-Che ;Lee, Chen-Yi ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringA fast-lock and portable all-digital delay-locked loop (ADDLL) with 90 degrees phase shift and tunable digitally-controlled phase shifter (DCPS) for DDR controller applications are presented. The ADDLL can achieve small phase-shift error in 1.3 degrees at 400 MHz and locking time of less than 13 clock cycles, making it very suitable for low-power DDR controller with power-down mode. The proposed DCPS provides the suitable phase shift of control signals for DDR interface where precise control is the key to reliable high-performance operation. Besides, the cell-based implementation makes it easy to target a variety of technologies as a soft silicon intellectual property (IP).Item type:Item, Spatial redistribution of the optical field intensity in inverted polymer solar cells(2010-05-10) ;Chen, Fang-Chung ;Wu, Jyh-Lih ;Hung, Yi ;光電工程學系顯示科技研究所We have used indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conducting oxide, as an optical spacer to improve the performance of inverted polymer solar cells. The optical interference effect resulted in spatial redistribution of the optical field in the devices. Although the degree of light absorption in inverted cells was not increased, the resulting favorable distribution of photogenerated excitons probably decreased the level of exciton quenching near the electrodes. As a result, the introduction of the ITO optical spacer at an appropriate thickness increased the short-circuit current density and the overall power conversion efficiency. W.We studied the power-dependent photoluminescence of Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O nanopowders grown by sol-gel method, at temperature T = 100 K. At moderate optical pumping intensity, a nonlinear emission band due to the radiative recombination of free biexcitons was detected. We found that the free biexciton binding energies of Zn(1-x)Mg(x)O nanopowder (0.01 <= x <= 0.05) are nearly constant (13.5 +/- 1.5 meV). (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Each of the N SCR units includes a first node, a second node coupled to the second source, and a trigger node. An nth diode of the (N−1) diodes is coupled between a first node of an nth SCR unit and a trigger node of an (n+1)th SCR unit. An nth resistor is coupled between the first node of the nth SCR unit and the first source, wherein n and N are integers. The (N−1) diodes can be replaced by directly coupled the first node of the nth SCR unit to the trigger node of the (n+1)th SCR unit when a trigger pulse is applied at the trigger node of a first SCR unit.Item type:Item, Quantum Chemical Prediction of Reaction Pathways and Rate Constants for Reactions of NO and NO2 with Monovacancy Defects on Graphite (0001) Surfaces(2010-05-13) ;Xu, S. C. ;Irle, S. ;Lin, M. C. ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryWe present reaction pathways for adsorption reactions of NO and NO2 molecules in the vicinity of monovacancy defects on graphite (0001) based on quantum chemical potential energy surfaces (PESs) obtained by B3LYP and dispersion-augmented density-functional tight-binding (DFTB-D) methods. To model the graphite (0001) monovacancy defects, finite-size molecular model systems up to the size of dicircumcoronene (C95H24) were employed. We find that the reactions of NOx on the monodefective graphite surface are initiated by rapid association processes with negligible barriers, leading to nitridation and oxidation of the graphite surface, and eventually producing gaseous COx, NO, and CN species leaving from an even more defective graphite surface. On the basis of the computed reaction pathways, we predict reaction rate constants in the temperature range between 300 and 3000 K using Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory. High-temperature quantum chemical molecular dynamics simulations at 3000 K based on on-the-fly DFTB-D energies and gradients support the results of our PES studies.Item type:Item, MULTIPOINT SENSING METHOD FOR CAPACITIVE TOUCH PANEL(2010-05-13) ;Chen, Jian Ting ;Chao, Paul C.P.Ruan, Jyun-YaoA multi-point sensing method used in a capacitive touch panel is disclosed to detect the voltage variation of every electrode patterned on two parallel electrode layers by means of a capacitive sensing circuit, and measure the vertical capacitance at the intersection crossed by the electrodes of the two electrode layers where the voltage variation is detected, and then compare the vertical capacitance thus measured with the initial vertical capacitance at the same intersection before touch, as a result, the intersection corresponding to the measured vertical capacitance can be determined as the touch point when the comparison result shows different.Item type:Item, Quantum Chemical Prediction of Reaction Pathways and Rate Constants for Reactions of NO and NO(2) with Monovacancy Defects on Graphite (0001) Surfaces(2010-05-13) ;Xu, S. It has a housing with an internal chamber, and several cold and hot tubes. The cold and hot tubes are arranged in a staggered manner in the internal chamber of the housing. Low and high temperature fluids flow inside the cold and hot tubes, respectively. When the exhaust gas passes through the chamber, temperature gradient between the cold and hot tubes causes aerosol particles suspended in the exhaust gas to deposit on the surface of cold tubes to achieve the treatment of exhaust gas. Staggered arrangement of cold and hot tubes can maintain nearly constant temperature gradient in the direction of the gas flow thereby enhances the overall removal efficiency of particles.Item type:Item, Assessment of gold nanoparticles as a size-dependent vaccine carrier for enhancing the antibody response against synthetic foot-and-mouth disease virus peptide(2010-05-14) ;Chen, Yu-Shiun ;Hung, Yao-Ching ;Lin, Wei-Hsu ;Huang, Guewha Steven材料科學與工程學系To assess the ability of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) to act as a size-dependent carrier, a synthetic peptide resembling foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) protein was conjugated to GNPs ranging from 2 to 50 nm in diameter (2, 5, 8, 12, 17, 37, and 50 nm). An extra cysteine was added to the C-terminus of the FMDV peptide (pFMDV) to ensure maximal conjugation to the GNPs, which have a high affinity for sulfhydryl groups. The resultant pFMDV-GNP conjugates were then injected into BALB/c mice. Immunization with pFMDV-keyhole limpet hemocyanin (pFMDV-KLH) conjugate was also performed as a control. Blood was obtained from the mice after 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks and antibody titers against both pFMDV and the carriers were measured. For the pFMDV-GNP immunization, specific antibodies against the synthetic peptide were detected in the sera of mice injected with 2, 5, 8, 12, and 17 nm pFMDV-GNP conjugates. Maximal antibody binding was noted for GNPs of diameter 8-17 nm. The pFMDV-GNPs induced a three-fold increase in the antibody response compared to the response to pFMDV-KLH. However, sera from either immunized mouse group did not exhibit an antibody response to GNPs, while the sera from pFMDV-KLH-immunized mice presented high levels of binding activity against KLH. Additionally, the uptake of pFMDV-GNP in the spleen was examined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The quantity of GNPs that accumulated in the spleen correlated to the magnitude of the immune response induced by pFMDV-GNP. In conclusion, we demonstrated the size-dependent immunogenic properties of pFMDV-GNP conjugates. Furthermore, we established that GNPs ranging from 8 to 17 nm in diameter may be ideal for eliciting a focused antibody response against a synthetic pFMDV peptide.Item type:Item, Strong orbital polarization in orthorhombic DyMnO3: A combined x-ray linear dichroism and ab initio electronic structure study(2010-05-15) ;Chen, J. M. ;Hu, Z. ;Jeng, H. T. ;Chin, Y. Y.Lee, J. M.We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the Mn 3d orbital occupation in orthorhombic DyMnO3 single crystals. We have observed a very strong polarization dependence in the Mn L-2,L-3 x-ray absorption spectra, indicative for a distinct anisotropic orbital occupation. Ab initio electronic-structure calculations clearly infer the existence of a strong orbital polarization in the e(g) band with a staggered d(3x2-r2)/d(3y2-r2)-type ordering pattern in the ab plane. This finding is in excellent agreement with a quantitative analyis of the spectra using the atomic multiplet cluster approach.Item type:Item, Optimization and sensitivity analysis of controlling arrivals in the queueing system with single working vacation(2010-05-15) ;Yang, Dong-Yuh ;Wang, Kuo-Hsiung ;Wu, Chia-Huang ;工業工程與管理學系Department of Industrial Engineering and ManagementThis paper analyzes the F-policy M/M/1/K queueing system with working vacation and an exponential startup time. The F-policy deals with the issue of controlling arrivals to a queueing system, and the server requires a startup time before allowing customers to enter the system. For the queueing systems with working vacation, the server can still provide service to customers rather than completely stop the service during a vacation period. The matrix-analytic method is applied to develop the steady-state probabilities, and then obtain several system characteristics. We construct the expected cost function and formulate an optimization problem to find the minimum cost. The direct search method and Quasi-Newton method are implemented to determine the optimal system capacity K, the optimal threshold F and the optimal service rates (mu(B), mu(V)) at the minimum cost. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of changes in the system parameters on the expected cost function. Finally, numerical examples are provided for illustration purpose. Based upon the refined cellular automaton (CA) model recently developed by the authors [LW. Lan, Y C Chiou. Z.S. Lin, C.C. Hsu, Physica A 388 (2009) 3917-3930], this paper further proposed a sophisticated CA model to elucidate the erratic motorcycle behaviours in mixed traffic contexts. In addition to the conventional moving forward and lane-change rules, the sophisticated CA model also explicated the lateral drift behaviour for cars moving in the same lane, the lateral drift behaviour for motorcycles breaking into two moving cars. and the transverse crossing behaviour for motorcycles through the gap between two stationary cars in the same lane. Fundamental diagrams and space-time trajectories for vehicles with various car-motorcycle mixed ratios are demonstrated (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The pretreatment of the substrate surface may influence the initial growth period. In this study, diamond films have been synthesized on adamantane-coated crystalline silicon {100} substrate by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition from a gaseous mixture of methane and hydrogen gases without the application of a bias voltage to the substrates. Prior to adamantane coating, the Si substrates were not pretreated such as abraded/scratched. The substrate temperature was similar to 530 degrees C during diamond deposition. The deposited films are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectrometry, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These measurements provide definitive evidence for high-crystalline quality diamond film, which is synthesized on a SiC rather than clean Si substrate. Characterization through atomic force microscope allows establishing fine quality criteria of the film according to the grain size of nanodiamond along with SiC. The diamond films exhibit a low-threshold (55 V/mu m) and high current-density (1.6 mA/cm(2)) field-emission (FE) display. The possible mechanism of formation of diamond films and their FE properties have been demonstrated. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. In this setup, one of the dots is embedded in a close metallic ring with a finite size L and the other dot is side coupled to the embedded dot via an antiferromagnetic spin-spin-exchange coupling with a strength K. The antiferromagnetic coupling favors local spin-singlet state and suppresses the Kondo screening. The mean-field phase diagram as a function of 1/L and K shows a crossover to the local spin-singlet ground state from the Kondo phase to occur at K < K(c) (L = 4n, 4n + 1, 4n + 3) and at K > K(c) (L = 4n + 2). The effective Kondo temperature T(k) (proptotional to inverse of the Kondo screening cloud size) shows the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) scaling at finite sizes for L = 4n, 4n + 2, indicating quantum transition of the KT type between the Kondo screened phase for K <= K(c) and a local spin-singlet phase for K >= K(c) in the thermodynamic limit with Kc being the critical value. The local density of states on the embedded quantum dot and the persistent current at finite sizes with different values of K are calculated in the crossover region. Item type:Item,
