The vibrational populations of allyl phenyl ether were excited by a broadband visible 5-fs laser pulse by the stimulated Raman process to promote a 'non-thermal' Claisen rearrangement reaction in the electronic ground state. Analyses of the time-resolved vibrational spectra observed in the subpicosecond region has shown that the Claisen rearrangement proceeds in the following three-step pathway: (1) weakening of the C(3)O bond to generate a bis-allyl intermediate, (2) formation of the weak C(1)C(5) bond results in the generation of a six-membered structure, and (3) simultaneous processes of C(3)O breaking and C(1)C(5) formation leading to the generation of a keto-intermediate. Meta-analysis of Dense Genecentric Association Studies Reveals Common and Uncommon Variants Associated with Height

Height is a classic complex trait with common variants in a growing list of genes known to contribute to the phenotype. Using a genecentric genotyping array targeted toward cardiovascular-related loci, comprising 49,320 SNPs across approximately 2000 loci, we evaluated the association of common and uncommon SNPs with adult height in 114,223 individuals from 47 studies and six ethnicities. A total of 64 loci contained a SNP associated with height at array-wide significance (p < 2.4 x 10(-6)), with 42 loci surpassing the conventional genome-wide significance threshold (p < 5 x 10(-8)). Common variants with minor allele frequencies greater than 5% were observed to be associated with height in 37 previously reported loci. In individuals of European ancestry, uncommon SNPs in IL11 and SMAD3, which would not be genotyped with the use of standard genome-wide genotyping arrays, were strongly associated with height (p < 3 x 10(-11)). Conditional analysis within associated regions revealed five additional variants associated with height independent of lead SNPs within the locus, suggesting allelic heterogeneity. Although underpowered to replicate findings from individuals of European ancestry, the direction of effect of associated variants was largely consistent in African American, South Asian, and Hispanic populations. Overall, we show that dense coverage of genes for uncommon SNPs, coupled with large-scale meta-analysis, can successfully identify additional variants associated with a common complex trait.

Logistic regression model for predicting the failure probability of a landslide dam

Landslides may obstruct river flow and result in landslide dams; they occur in many regions of the world. The formation and disappearance of natural lakes involve a complex earth-surface process. According to the lessons learned from many historical cases, landslide dams usually break down rapidly soon after the formation of the lake. Regarding hazard mitigation, prompt evaluation of the stability of the landslide dam is crucial. Based on a Japanese dataset, this study utilized the logistic regression method and the jack-knife technique to identify the important geomorphic variables, including peak flow (or catchment area), dam height, width and length in sequence, affecting the stability of landslide dams. The resulting high overall prediction power demonstrates the robustness of the proposed logistic regression models. Accordingly, the failure probability of a landslide dam can also be evaluated based on this approach. Ten landslide dams (formed after the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake, the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake and 2009 Typhoon Morakot) with complete dam geometry records were adopted as examples of evaluating the failure probability. The stable Tsao-Ling landslide dam, which was induced by the Chi-Chi earthquake, has a failure probability of 27.68% using a model incorporating the catchment area and dam geometry. On the contrary, the Tangjiashan landslide dam, which was artificially breached soon after its formation during the Wenchuan earthquake, has a failure probability as high as 99.54%. Typhoon Morakot induced the Siaolin landslide dam, which was breached within one hour after its formation and has a failure probability of 71.09%. Notably, the failure probability of the earthquake induced cases is reduced if the catchment area in the prediction model is replaced by the peak flow of the dammed stream for these cases. In contrast, the predicted failure probability of the heavy rainfall-induced case increases if the high flow rate of the dammed stream is incorporated into the prediction model. Consequently, it is suggested that the prediction model using the peak flow as causative factor should be used to evaluate the stability of a landslide dam if the peak flow is available. Together with an estimation of the impact of an outburst flood from a landslide-dammed lake, the failure probability of the landslide dam predicted by the proposed logistic regression model could be useful for evaluating the related risk. Polarization-independent filters for luminescent solar concentrators

The efficiency of luminescent solar concentrators could be enhanced by use of wavelength-selective filters, reducing the amount of luminescent light lost. To accomplish this, polarization-independent filters with reflectivity >97% were made by combining layers of cholesteric liquid crystals, either a right-with a left-handed layer, or two right-handed layers with a half-lambda waveplate. Normal cholesteric filters have a reflection bandwidth which is narrower than the spectral and angular range of the luminescent emission. The reflection band is broadened from 80 to 200 nm by employing a pitch gradient in the cholesteric layer. The measured transmission bands compare well with calculations. Manifestation of quantum-billiard eigenvalue statistics from subthreshold emission of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

We report that the subthreshold emission spectra of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) can be analogously used to manifest the quantum-billiard energy spectra. The Fourier-transformed distributions of the subthreshold emission spectra are demonstrated to display various peak structures that are in good agreement with the results of the quantum-billiard model. We also verify that the statistical analyses of the nearest-neighbor eigenvalue spacing distributions obey a Poisson distribution for an equilateral-triangular device and a Wigner distribution for a stadium-shaped device.

一種跳躍式遞迴複雜圖形構圖法及具有可執行此構圖法之電腦程式的儲存媒體。首先，設置起始物件及生成物件。經數次疊代形成過渡物件。再以此過渡物件為基礎進行跳躍遞迴；跳躍遞迴時，每次疊代的生成物件是用前次疊代後的結構性結果轉化為單一圖案，加上基準物件後所設計；每次疊代後的結果仍保留原來的結構，因此以結構為輸入的起始物件；第一次疊代的起始物件可以是不同的疊代物件的表徵。由於每次疊代的輸入結構相同，生成物件又是單一的圖案構成，因此每次疊代耗費計算資源相同，可避免計算資源指數成長，也節省大量計算資源、及避免系統運算量負荷過重。
Three-Dimensional Reconstruction of Brain-wide Wiring Networks in Drosophila at Single-Cell Resolution

Background: Animal behavior is governed by the activity of interconnected brain circuits. Comprehensive brain wiring maps are thus needed in order to formulate hypotheses about information flow and also to guide genetic manipulations aimed at understanding how genes and circuits orchestrate complex behaviors. Results: To assemble this map, we deconstructed the adult Drosophila brain into approximately 16,000. single neurons and reconstructed them into a common standardized framework to produce a virtual fly brain. We have constructed a mesoscopic map and found that it consists of 41 local processing units (LPUs), six hubs, and 58 tracts covering the whole Drosophila brain. Despite individual local variation, the architecture of the Drosophila brain shows invariance for both the aggregation of local neurons (LNs) within specific LPUs and for the connectivity of projection neurons (PNs) between the same set of LPUs. An open-access image database, named FlyCircuit, has been constructed for online data archiving, mining, analysis, and three-dimensional visualization of all single neurons, brain-wide LPUs, their wiring diagrams, and neural tracts. Conclusion: We found that the Drosophila brain is assembled from families of multiple LPUs and their interconnections. This provides an essential first step in the analysis of information processing within and between neurons in a complete brain.

A Reynolds equation that considers both the smoothing hydrodynamic pressure and the pattern of surface topography at the polishing pads was used to solve the distribution of the hydrodynamic field. A three-body abrasion wear model for solving the removed thickness of silicon oxide films was also introduced to obtain the removal rate of SiO(2) film in a chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) process. The suction hydrodynamic pressure field expands its region with increasing groove width and decreasing depth of grooves. The flow rate of the slurry was thus increased, and the removal rate also increased with an increased number of abrasive particles. The solid contact pressure was much higher than the hydrodynamic pressure. The three-body abrasion for the wear depth of a particle arises from the solid contacting pressure and is hence more important than the hydrodynamic pressure. The removal rate of the SiO(2) film was dominated by the number of abrasive particles, which was affected by the variation of the hydrodynamic pressure in addition to the wear depth controlled by the solid contact pressure. The thickness of the silicon oxide films removed increased with decreasing grooving width and depth. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Method For Selecting Transmitting Points In A Communication System

The present invention provides a method for identifying a specific number of communicating points having relatively smallest accumulated path values from a plurality of transmitting points for a receiving point in a communication system. The method includes steps of: (a) defining a first coordination of each of the plurality of transmitting points and the receiving point on a complex plane; (b) transferring the first coordination of the receiving point to a second coordination thereof, in which the second coordination of the receiving point is near an origin of the complex plane; and (c) identifying the specific number of transmitting points having relatively smallest accumulated path values based on the second coordination of the receiving point.
