Item type:Item, Intra-cavity stimulated emissions of photons in almost pure spin states without imposed nonreciprocity(2012-01-30) ;Chang, Shu-Wei ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsWe propose a chiral Fabry-Perot cavity in which only the cavity modes in almost pure spin (circular polarization) states lase in the presence of gain. In absence of imposed nonreciprocal environments and time-reversal symmetry breaking of emitter states to favor the emission of circularly-polarized photons, only the resonance of modes with a specific spin orientation remains in the cavity. We demonstrate a prototype of the cavity using distributed Bragg reflectors and cholesteric liquid crystals. This reciprocal cavity may provide a method to control the angular momentum state of emitters based on stimulated emissions. Combining the classical energy method and the smoothing estimates for the Airy equation, we guarantee the time local well-posedness for this system. We also discuss the extension of our results to more general hyperbolic-dispersive system. Excellent optical confinement and slow light effect provided by the photonic crystal structure greatly enhance the optical force exerted on the particle. The S-PhCW can thus transport the particle with optical propulsion force as strong as 5.3 pN/W, which is over 10 times stronger than that generated by the slotted strip waveguide (S-SW). In addition, the vertical optical attraction force induced in the S-PhCW is over 2 times stronger than that of the S-SW. Therefore, the S-PhCW transports particles not only efficiently but also stably. We anticipate this waveguide structure will be beneficial for the future lab-on-chip development (C)2012 Optical Society of AmericaItem type:Item, An electrically tunable-focusing liquid crystal lens with a low voltage and simple electrodes(2012-01-30) ;Lin, Hung-Chun ;Lin, Yi-Hsin ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsAn electrically tunable focusing LC lens with a low voltage and simple planar electrodes is demonstrated. The inhomogeneous electric field of the LC lens without any hole-patterned-electrode is generated by using an embedded polymeric layer with a gradient distribution of dielectric constants (or relative permittivity). LC directors in the LC layer experience spatially inhomogeneous voltages even though a single voltage is applied to the planar electrodes. Such a LC lens has a low voltage (similar to 2.6 V-rms) and simple design of electrodes. The gradient distribution of dielectric constants of polymeric layer is discussed and the performance of the LC lens is investigated. The applications of such a LC lens are cell phones, webcam, and pico projectors. The bit node messages are generated according to the difference between the newly generated check messages and the previous check node messages. The bit node messages can be updated immediately, and the decoder throughput can be improved. The required memory of LDPC decoders can be effectively reduced, and the decoding speed can also be enhanced.Item type:Item, BPR1J-097, a novel FLT3 kinase inhibitor, exerts potent inhibitory activity against AML(2012-01-31) ;Lin, W-H ;Jiaang, W-T ;Chen, C-W ;Yen, K-JHsieh, S-YBACKGROUND: Activating mutations of Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) constitute a major driver in the pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Hence, pharmacological inhibitors of FLT3 are of therapeutic interest for AML. METHODS: The effects of inhibition of FLT3 activity by a novel potent FLT3 inhibitor, BPR1J-097, were investigated using in vitro and in vivo assays. RESULTS: The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of BPR1J-097 required to inhibit FLT3 kinase activity ranged from 1 to 10 nM, and the 50% growth inhibition concentrations (GC(50)s) were 21 +/- 7 and 46 +/- 14 nM for MOLM-13 and MV4-11 cells, respectively. BPR1J-097 inhibited FLT3/signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 phosphorylation and triggered apoptosis in FLT3-driven AML cells. BPR1J-097 also showed favourable pharmacokinetic property and pronounced dose-dependent tumour growth inhibition and regression in FLT3-driven AML murine xenograft models. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that BPR1J-097 is a novel small molecule FLT-3 inhibitor with promising in vivo anti-tumour activities and suggest that BPR1J-097 may be further developed in preclinical and clinical studies as therapeutics in AML treatments. The test heat exchangers have a new type of multipass parallel and counter cross-flow water flow arrangement which is a combination of parallel cross-flow and counter cross-flow. The test samples are made from copper and aluminium with different number of tube rows (N-row = 2, 3, 4 and 5). The effects of number of tube rows and fin material on the heat transfer and friction characteristics are studied. The results show that no significant effect for either number of tube rows or fin materials on the heat transfer performance is found at high Reynolds number. In addition, the correlation of the air-side performances of this type of the heat exchangers at high Reynolds number is developed for industrial applications. (c) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. L. ;Chen, C. A. ;Lin, Y. L. ;Lin, T. F.機械工程學系An experiment is carried out here to investigate the transient oscillatory boiling heat transfer and associated bubble characteristics of FC-72 flow over a small circular plate subject to a time varying heat flux with the plate flush mounted on the bottom of a horizontal rectangular channel. At the inlet the flow is maintained at saturated liquid state with zero vapor quality. The imposed heat flux oscillates periodically with time in the form of rectangular waves. In the experiment the FC-72 mass flux G varies from 300 to 400 kg/m(2)s, mean imposed heat flux (q) over bar ranges from 0 to 10 W/cm(2) and the amplitude of the heat flux oscillation Delta q is fixed at 10-50% of (q) over bar with the period of the heat flux oscillation varied from 10 to 30 s. The experimental results show that the time-averaging FC-72 oscillatory boiling heat transfer characteristics resemble that for stable flow boiling. However, the imposed heat flux oscillation causes significant temporal oscillations in the heated plate temperature, boiling heat transfer coefficient, bubble departure diameter and frequency, and active nucleation site density. These physical quantities oscillate at the same frequency as the heat flux oscillation and at a higher (q) over bar, a larger Delta q/(q) over bar, and a longer t(p) they exhibit stronger oscillations. Besides, a slight time lag in T-w oscillation is seen. Moreover, the size of departing bubbles, active nucleation site density and bubble departure frequency decrease as the heat flux is reduced to the low level of (q) over bar - Delta q. The opposite processes take place for the heat flux raised to the high level of (q) over bar + Delta q. Furthermore, at the mean imposed heat flux close to that for the ONB in the stable boiling we observe intermittent boiling in the flow. A regime map is provided to delineate the boundaries among single-phase liquid flow, intermittent boiling and persistent boiling. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. First, an initiator and generators are set. After several times of iterating, a transitional object is formed. Then, a leaping recursion is performed based on this transitional object. When performing the leaping recursion, a generator of each of the iterations is designed by a single pattern converted from a structural result of a previous iteration added with a base object. Since the result of each of the iterations keeps the original structure, the structure is used as the input initiator. The initiator of the first iteration can be a feature of different iteration objects. Since the input structure of iterations are the same, the advantage of reducing computing resources and avoid system overload are reachable.Item type:Item, Energy Landscape Evolution of Single-Molecule Protein Guided by Conformational Fluctuation(2012-01-31) ;Lin, Chien Y. ;Huang, June Y. ;Lo, Leu-Wei ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsItem type:Item, Effect of compressive stress on nickel-induced lateral crystallization of amorphous silicon thin films(2012-01-31) ;Huang, S. Y. ;Lin, H. L. ;Chao, C. G. ;Liu, T. F.材料科學與工程學系The present study describes a method enabling the metal-induced lateral crystallization (MILC) of amorphous silicon (a-Si) films. Glass substrates coated with a-Si films were contacted with ground nickel sheets under compressive stresses ranging from 3.7 to 265.8 MPa at 550 degrees C for 1 h. Subsequently, the nickel sheet and stress were removed and the specimens were annealed at 550 degrees C for 1 to 4 h. The experimental results indicate that the extent of MILC decreased when the preliminary compressive stress was increased, while all specimens exhibited the same rate of lateral crystallization during annealing. The present study indicates that, by applying an appropriate compressive stress (similar to 4 MPa), an effective method to reduce the residual Ni content in polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) can be obtained. Local remnant piezoresponse was utilized to probe both ferroelectric properties and effects of imperfect electrical contacts. It was found that the shape of electromechanical hysteresis loops is strongly influenced by an extrinsic dielectric gap, primarily through the suppressing effect of the depolarizing field on the spontaneous polarization in the ultrathin films. Furthermore, statistical analysis of the hysteresis loops has revealed lateral variation of the extrinsic dielectric gap with sub-10-nm resolution. Robust and reproducible ferroelectric properties of nanoscale BiFeO3 indicate its potential for nanoscale applications in information storage and spintronics.Item type:Item, Folding and Characterization of Intrinsically Disordered Protein Human Cyclin I (Ccni)(2012-01-31) ;Chu, Hsueh-Liang ;Cheng, Tsai-Mu ;Li, Hsing-Yuan ;Chang, Chia-Ching交大名義發表Item type:Item, pH-Sensitive Pegylated Cationic Lipid-DNA Complexes for Gene Delivery: Transfection Efficiency and Live Cell Imaging Studies(2012-01-31) ;Chan, Chia-Ling ;Majzoub, Ramsey ;Shirazi, Rahau S. ;Liang, Keng-SanEwert, Kai K.Item type:Item, Magnetic and Metal Binding Structural Analysis of Mn,Zn-Metallothionein-Green Fluorescence Fusion Protein(2012-01-31) ;Chen, Ting-Kai ;Lin, Yin-Chih ;Chen, Yu-Chen ;Chen, Yen-LinTseng, Wei-LunItem type:Item, Functional Characterization of Glycine N-Methyltransferase and Its Interactive Protein DEPDC6/DEPTOR in Hepatocellular Carcinoma(2012-02-01) ;Yen, Chia-Hung ;Lu, Yao-Cheng ;Li, Chung-Hsien ;Lee, Cheng-MingChen, Chia-YenGlycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT) is a tumor suppressor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). High rates of Gnmt knockout mice developed HCC. Epigenetic alteration and dysregulation of several pathways including wingless-type MMTV integration site (Wnt), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and Janus kinase and signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) are associated with HCC development in Gnmt knockout mice. We hypothesized that GNMT may regulate signal transduction through interacting with other proteins directly. In this report, we identified a mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor (DEP domain containing MTOR-interacting protein (DEPDC6/DEPTOR)) as a GNMT-binding protein by using yeast two-hybrid screening. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer assay demonstrated that the C-terminal half of GNMT interact with the PSD-95/DIg1/ZO-1 (PDZ) domain of DEPDC6/DEPTOR. Immunohistochemical staining showed that 27.5% (14/51) of HCC patients had higher expression levels of DEPDC6/DEPTOR in the tumorous tissues than in tumor-adjacent tissues, especially among HCC patients with hepatitis B viral infection (odds ratio 10.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05-11.3) or patients with poor prognosis (death hazard ratio 4.51, 95% CI 1.60-12.7). In terms of molecular mechanism, knockdown of DEPDC6/DEPTOR expression in HuH-7 cells caused S6K and 4E-BP activation, but suppressed Akt. Overexpression of DEPDC6/DEPTOR activated Akt and increased survival of HCC cells. Overexpression of GNMT caused activation of mTOR/raptor downstream signaling and delayed G2/M cell cycle progression, which altogether resulted in cellular senescence. Furthermore, GNMT reduced proliferation of HuH-7 cells and sensitized them to rapamycin treatment both in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, GNMT regulates HOC growth in part through interacting with DEPDC6/DEPTOR and modulating mTOR/raptor signaling pathway. Both GNMT and DEPDC6/DEPTOR are potential targets for developing therapeutics for HCC. Online address: http://www.molmed.org doi: 10.2119/molmed.2011.00331
