Item type:Item, Does intellectual capital matter? Assessing the profitability and marketability of IC design companies(2012-10-01) ;Kuo, Mei-Huan ;Yang, Chyan ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and FinanceUnder a highly competitive market and a dynamic industrial environment, how to evaluate and enhance an integrated circuit (IC) design company's good performance is important. This paper develops a two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) combined intellectual capital theory through financial and non-financial data to evaluate a performance process on the IC design company. It adopts a new slacks-based measure (SBM) to obtain a more accurate performance estimation and rank between companies. This paper further uses the Simar and Wilson procedure with a truncated regression to explore the impact of intellectual capital variables on performance and competitive advantage. From the study we suggest to the company in how to enhance precisely its performance to create company value and success.Item type:Item, Improved Output Power of Nitride-Based Light-Emitting Diodes With Convex-Patterned Sapphire Substrates(2012-10-01) ;Hsu, Yu-Ting ;Yu, Cheng-Chang ;Huang, Kai-Feng ;Lan, Wen-HowHuang, Jing-EnNitride-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) grown on different convex-patterned sapphire substrates are proposed and fabricated. The electrical and optical properties of these LEDs are discussed in detail. It is found that the LED with a ball-shape patterned sapphire substrate has the best crystalline quality and I-V characteristic. On the other hand, on reducing total internal reflection, the LED with hexagonal-shape patterned sapphire substrate (HPSS) has the best performance on output power and external quantum efficiency. In comparison to the LED without patterned substrate, the LED with HPSS has 175% and 165% enhancement on output power and external quantum efficiency, respectively.Item type:Item, Design Ensemble Machine Learning Model for Breast Cancer Diagnosis(2012-10-01) ;Hsieh, Sheau-Ling ;Hsieh, Sung-Huai ;Cheng, Po-Hsun ;Chen, Chi-HuangHsu, Kai-PingIn this paper, we classify the breast cancer of medical diagnostic data. Information gain has been adapted for feature selections. Neural fuzzy (NF), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), quadratic classifier (QC), each single model scheme as well as their associated, ensemble ones have been developed for classifications. In addition, a combined ensemble model with these three schemes has been constructed for further validations. The experimental results indicate that the ensemble learning performs better than individual single ones. Moreover, the combined ensemble model illustrates the highest accuracy of classifications for the breast cancer among all models.Item type:Item, A Low-Latency Scanning with Association Mechanism for Real-Time Communication in Mobile WiMAX(2012-10-01) ;Chen, You-Lin ;Tsao, Shiao-Li ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn Mobile WiMAX, a mobile station (MS) scans neighboring base stations (BSs) before conducting handover. The MS may perform the association further, i.e., initial ranging, with neighboring BSs during scanning to obtain ranging parameters and/or service availability information for a potential handover to a BS and/or the selection of target BSs. However, the scanning with association scheme may introduce additional latency for handover. This study first evaluates the conventional scanning with association process, and then proposes a mechanism to reduce the association latency. The performance models of the proposed mechanism are presented and the accuracies of analytical models are verified by simulations. Results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism reduces the association latency by 61.9%-78.0% for audio services and 41.3%-65.4% for video services.Item type:Item, The Floating-Gate Non-Volatile Semiconductor Memory-From Invention to the Digital Age(2012-10-01) ;Sze, S. M. ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityIn the past 45 years (from 1967 to 2012), the non-volatile semiconductor memory (NVSM) has emerged from a floating-gate concept to the prime technology driver of the largest industry in the world-the electronics industry. In this paper, we briefly review the historical development of NVSM and project its future trends to the year 2020. In addition, we consider NVSM's wide-range of applications from the digital cellular phone to tablet computer to digital television. As the device dimension is scaled down to the deca-nanometer regime, we expect that many innovations will be made to meet the scaling challenges, and NVSM-inspired technology will continue to enrich and improve our lives for decades to come.Item type:Item, Accurate and rapid alignment of laser scanned 3D surface using TSK-type neural-fuzzy network-based coarse-to-fine strategy(2012-10-01) ;Chang, Jyun-Wei ;Lin, Sheng-Fuu ;Hsu, Chi-Yao ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringAligning a laser scanned three-dimensional (3D) surface is considered a critical step in object recognition, shape analysis, and automatic visual inspection. Two major concerns for the alignment task are execution time and alignment accuracy. Recently, neural network-based methods have become very popular due to their high efficiency. However, such methods experience difficulty in reaching high accuracy because the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to perform coarse alignment causes a large alignment error. Thus, a TSK-type neural-fuzzy network (TNFN)-based coarse-to-fine 3D surface alignment scheme is proposed in the current paper. Compared with traditional neural network-based approaches, the proposed method provides a coarse-to-fine alignment approach to ensure the accurate pose estimated by TNFN in the coarse phase, as well the high alignment speed provided by TNFN-based surface modeling in the fine phase. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed 3D surface alignment system over existing systems. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. In contrast to traditional design flow, a behavior-model program is constructed before parallelizing as a bridge to help developers gradually leverage the technique of thread-pipelining parallelization. The proposed methodology integrates verification mechanisms into the design flow. To demonstrate the practicality of the proposed methodology, we applied it to the parallelization of a 3D depth map generator with thread pipelining. The parallel 3D depth map generator was further integrated into a 3D video playing system for evaluation of the verification overheads of the proposed methodology and the system performance. The results show the parallel system can achieve 33.72 fps in D1 resolution and 12.22 fps in HD720 resolution through a five-stage pipeline. When verifying the parallel program, the proposed verification approach keeps the performance degradation within 23% and 21.1% in D1 and HD720 resolutions, respectively. Item type:Item, Controlled growth of beta-Na0.24V2O5 nanowire thin films(2012-10-01) ;Ke, Jhih-Syuan ;Wu, Ming-Cheng ;Weng, Sheng-Feng ;Lee, Chi-Shen應用化學系A method to prepare well-aligned beta-Na0.24V2O5 nanowires (NWs) involves the deposition of a vanadium oxide complex onto a substrate via gaseous transport, followed by a reaction between the complex and a sodium cation (Na+) precursor coated on the substrate. Techniques to investigate the composition, crystallinity, and morphology of products as prepared include ICP-AES, X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), SEM/transmission electron microscope (TEM), and XPS. PXRD patterns and images from a TEM confirm the single-crystalline nature of beta-Na0.24V2O5 NWs, which grow along direction [1 0 0]. Factors affecting the amount of deposited material and morphology were tested. On varying the reaction conditions, the length of the beta-Na0.24V2O5 wires is controlled in a range of 5-25 mu m. A mechanism of formation is proposed. According to measurements of field emission, the turn-on field is 7.8 V/mu m, and the maximum emission current density of 4.66 mA/cm(2) occurs at field 11 V/mu m. This method is applicable to grow other tertiary metal oxide nanostructures on glass substrate.Item type:Item, Nanotribological behavior of thermal treatment of zinc titanate thin films(2012-10-01) ;Wu, Shyh-Chi ;Yau, Wei-Hung ;Tsai, Chien-Huang ;Chou, Chang-Pin機械工程學系We present a study of the nanotribological behavior of ZnTiO3 films; the surface morphology, stoichiometry, and friction (mu) were analyzed using atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and nanoscratch system. It is confirmed that the measured values of H and mu of the ZnTiO3 films were in the range from 8.5?+/-?0.4 to 5.6?+/-?0.4 GPa and from 0.164 to 0.226, respectively. It is suggested that the hexagonal ZnTiO3 decomposes into cubic Zn2TiO4 and rutile TiO2 based on the thermal treatment; the H, mu, and RMS were changed owing to the grain growth and recovery that results in a relax crystallinity of ZnTiO3 films. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measured, core levels of O 1 can attribute the weaker bonds as well as lower resistance after thermal treatment. The XRD patterns showed that as-deposited films are mainly amorphous; however, the hexagonal ZnTiO3 phase was observed with the ZnTiO3 (104), (110), (116), and (214) peaks from 620 to 820 degrees C, indicating that there is highly (104)-oriented ZnTiO3 on the silicon substrate. The coarse-fine architecture with binary-weighted delay stages is applied for the delay range and resolution optimization. The coarse-tuning stage of the DCO uses the interlaced hysteresis delay cell, which is power and area efficient, as compared with conventional delay cells. The glitch protection synchronous circuit makes the DCO easily controllable without generating glitches. A demonstrative all-digital phase-locked loop using the DCO is fabricated in a 90-nm CMOS process with an active area of 0.0086 mm(2). The measured output frequency range is 180-530 MHz at the supply of 1 V. The power consumption are 466 and 357 mu W at 480- and 200-MHz output, respectively.Item type:Item, An energy-efficient tie-type architecture for stable and wavelength-tunable SOA-based fiber laser(2012-10-01) ;Yeh, C. H. ;Chow, C. W. ;Wu, Y. F. ;Lu, S. S.光電工程學系A new and energy-efficient tie-type architecture for stable and wavelength-tunable semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based fiber ring laser is proposed and experimentally investigated. Here, the tie-type laser configuration is constructed by two Sagnac fiber loops. The proposed laser also can extend the lasing wavelength to longer wavelength (L-band) even only the C-band SOA is used. The proposed tie-type architecture has > 5 dB higher output optical power at bias current of 80 mA when compared with the single ring SOA-based fiber laser. In this measurement, the output power, wavelength tuning range, side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) and output stability of proposed fiber laser have also been analyzed and discussed. The significantly longer N3-O3/N4-O4 [1.380(12) and 1.280(12) angstrom] and Fe1-N3/Fe1-N4 [2.008(11) and 2.045(10) angstrom] bond distances reflect that N3-O3 and N4-O4 of complex 1 may act as the nitroxyl-coordinated ligands. That is, the electronic structure of the DNIC 1 is best described as a {Fe(NO)(2)}(9) motif coordinated by two nitroxyl (NO-) ligands.Item type:Item, Facile preparation of sol-gel-derived ultrathin and high-dielectric zirconia films for capacitor devices(2012-10-01) ;You, Hsin-Chiang ;Chang, Chun-Ming ;Liu, Tzeng-Feng ;Cheng, Chih-ChiaChang, Feng-ChihThis study successfully prepared zirconia ultrathin films from the sol-gel solution with dispersion of zirconium halide in 1-octanol solvent. The film was subjected to annealing treatments after sol-gel spin-coating, and the films of interest were evaluated. The amorphous morphology of the zirconia film was identified using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The plot of the current density with respect to the electric field demonstrates that the as-deposited film at 500 degrees C annealing exhibited an inferior leakage current, whereas 600 degrees C annealing stabilized the film with a satisfactory leakage current of 10(-8) to 10(-9) A/cm(2). The out-gassing behavior of the sol-gel-derived thin film was evaluated using a thermal desorption system, that is, atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry. The dielectric constant of the film was dependent on the retention effect of the preparation solvents. The low residual solvent for the preparation of the thin film with 1-octanol solvent and 600 degrees C annealing contributed to the superior high-k property. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Without any surface modification, the Au nanostructures were used as the electrodes for dopamine (DA) sensing. Among them, the Au NW electrode performed exceptionally well. The determined linear range for DA detection was 0.2- 600 mu M (N = 3) and the sensitivity was 178 nA/mu M cm(2), while the detection limit was 26 nM (S/N = 3). After 10 repeated measurements, 95% of the original anodic current values were maintained for the nanostructured electrodes. Sequential additions of citric acid (CA, 1 mM), uric acid (UA, saturated), and ascorbic acid (AA, 1 mu M) did not interfere the amperometric response from the addition of DA (0.1 mu M).Item type:Item, Large-scale simulations on multiple Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for the direct simulation Monte Carlo method(2012-10-01) ;Su, C. -C. ;Smith, M. R. ;Kuo, F. -A. ;Wu, J. -S.Hsieh, C. -W.In this study, the application of the two-dimensional direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method using an MPI-CUDA parallelization paradigm on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) clusters is presented. An all-device (i.e. GPU) computational approach is adopted where the entire computation is performed on the GPU device, leaving the CPU idle during all stages of the computation, including particle moving, indexing, particle collisions and state sampling. Communication between the GPU and host is only performed to enable multiple-GPU computation. Results show that the computational expense can be reduced by 15 and 185 times when using a single GPU and 16 GPUs respectively when compared to a single core of an Intel Xeon X5670 CPU. The demonstrated parallel efficiency is 75% when using 16 GPUs as compared to a single GPU for simulations using 30 million simulated particles. Finally, several very large-scale simulations in the near-continuum regime are employed to demonstrate the excellent capability of the current parallel DSMC method. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. International tourist hotels in Taiwan tend to diversify their business by expanding their food and beverage (F&B) services. According to international tourist hotels' financial statements for 1996-2008 (published by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau), almost 60% generate higher revenue from their F&B services. Drawing on the concept of comparative advantage, this study assumes that a hotel's comparative advantage depends on evaluating the profitability between the F&B departments and the lodging departments. The authors propose a simultaneous equation model with qualitative and limited dependent variables, drawing on the interactions between hotel profitability and revenue structure. The empirical results show that hotels in which F&B services contribute the majority of the revenue have a profitability advantage.Item type:Item, Heat Transfer Augmentation in Rotating Triangular Channels with Discrete and V-Shaped Ribs(2012-10-01) ;Liu, Yao-Hsien ;Lai, Shi-Yu ;機械工程學系Department of Mechanical EngineeringHeat transfer has been experimentally measured in a rotating triangular-shaped cooling channel with the rotation number up to 0.65. Continuous, discrete, V-shaped, and discrete-V ribs are applied on the leading and trailing surfaces to augment heat transfer. The rib spacing-to-height ratio (P/e) is 9 and rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/D-h) is 0.085. Regionally averaged heat transfer coefficients are measured along the streamwise and spanwise directions with the Reynolds numbers from 15,000 to 25,000. Effects of secondary flow induced by ribs and rotation in this channel give distinct local heat transfer distributions. Results show that V-shaped and discrete-V ribs have comparable heat transfer distributions, and both have the highest heat transfer enhancement at stationary condition as well as rotating conditions.Item type:Item, Ball tracking and 3D trajectory approximation with applications to tactics analysis from single-camera volleyball sequences(2012-10-01) ;Chen, Hua-Tsung ;Tsai, Wen-Jiin ;Lee, Suh-Yin ;Yu, Jen-Yu資訊工程學系Providing computer-assisted tactics analysis in sports is a growing trend. This paper presents an automatic system for ball tracking and 3D trajectory approximation from single-camera volleyball sequences as well as demonstrates several applications to tactics analysis. Ball tracking in volleyball video has great complexity due to the high density of players on the court and the complicated overlapping of ball-player. The 2D-to-3D inference is intrinsically challenging due to the loss of 3D information in projection to 2D frames. To overcome these challenges, we propose a two-phase ball tracking algorithm in which we first detect ball candidates for each frame, and then use them to compute the ball trajectories. With the aid of camera calibration, we involve physical characteristics of ball motion to approximate the 3D ball trajectory from the 2D trajectory. The visualization of 3D trajectory and the applications to trajectory-based tactics analysis not only assist the coaches and players in game study but also make game watching a whole new experience. The experiments on international volleyball games show encouraging results. We believe that the proposed framework can be extended and applied to various kinds of sports games.
