Item type:Item, An optimal design of thermal-actuated and piezoresistive-sensed CMOS-MEMS resonant sensor(2013-11-01) ;Wang, Chun-Chieh ;Tsai, Chun-Yin ;Chen, Tsung-Lin ;Liao, Sin-Hao機械工程學系This paper proposes an optimal design of the thermal-actuated, piezoresistive-sensed resonator fabricated by a foundry-provided CMOS-MEMS process. The optimal design is achieved both by quantitatively comparing the mechanical properties of different composite films as well as by deriving an analytical model for determining the device dimensions. The analytical model includes a stress model of an asymmetric mechanical structure and a piezoresistivity model of the heavily doped, n-type polysilicon film. The analytical model predicts that the optimal length of the displacement sensor is 200 mu m when the thermal actuator is 200 mu m in length and the absorption plate is 100 mu m in length. Additionally, the model predicts the resistivity of the polysilicon film of (6.8 +/- 2.2) m Omega cm and the gauge factor of (6.8 +/- 2.9) when the grain size is (250 +/- 100) nm. Experimental results agree well with simulation results. Experimental data show that the resonant frequency of the device is 80.06 kHz and shifts to 79.8 kHz when a brick of Pt mass is deposited on the resonator. The mass of the Pt estimated from the frequency shift is 4.5419 x 10(-12) kg, while estimated from the measured dimension is 4.4204 x 10(-12) kg. Sensitivity of the resonant sensor is calculated to be 1.8 x 10(2) Hz ng(-1). Experimental results further show that the polysilicon film used in the experiments has a grain size of (241 +/- 105) nm, an average gauge factor of 5.56 and average resistivity of 5.5 m Omega cm.Item type:Item, Instruction-Cycle-Based Dynamic Voltage Scaling Power Management for Low-Power Digital Signal Processor With 53% Power Savings(2013-11-01) ;Peng, Shen-Yu ;Huang, Tzu-Chi ;Lee, Yu-Huei ;Chiu, Chao-ChangChen, Ke-HorngThis paper presents and analyzes a fully digital instruction-cycle-based dynamic voltage scaling (iDVS) power management strategy for low-power processor designs. The proposed iDVS technique is fully compatible with conventional DVS scheduler algorithms. An additional computer aided design-based design flow was embedded in a standard cell library to implement the iDVS-based processor in highly integrated system-on-a-chip applications. The lattice asynchronous self-timed control digital low-dropout regulator with swift response and low quiescent current was also utilized to improve iDVS voltage transition response. Results show that the iDVS-based processor with the proposed adaptive instruction cycle control scheme can efficiently perform millions of instructions per second during iDVS transition. The iDVS-based digital signal processor chip was implemented in a HH-NEC 0.18-mu m standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor. Measurement results show that the voltage tracking speed with 11.6 V/mu s saved 53% power.Item type:Item, Forwarding Methods in Data Dissemination and Routing Protocols for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks(2013-11-01) ;Daraghmi, Yousef-Awwad ;Yi, Chih-Wei ;Stojmenovic, Ivan ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIntermittent connectivity, abrupt changes in network topology and low reception rate are the most important properties that distinguish VANET (vehicular ad hoc networks) from other types of ad hoc networks. To optimize reliability and time criticality metrics in data communication protocols for VANET, novel ideas are needed. In this article, we present a tutorial on methods (at the network layer), encountered in recent literature, for small and large scale routing protocols, and geocasting (broadcasting, data dissemination, and warning delivery) protocols.Item type:Item, The formation of quasi-nondiffracting focused beams with second-harmonic generation of flower Laguerre-Gaussian modes(2013-11-01) ;Lin, Y. C. ;Huang, K. F. ;Chen, Y. F. ;電子物理學系Department of ElectrophysicsWe theoretically demonstrate that the second-harmonic generation of a flower Laguerre-Gaussian mode can be exploited to form a quasi-nondiffracting focused beam. It is verified that the product of donut Laguerre-Gaussian modes with opposite topological charges leads to the formation of the quasi-nondiffracting focused beam. The divergence of the quasi-nondiffracting focused beam is numerically confirmed to be root 2l + 1 times less than that of the Gaussian TEM00 mode with the same beam waist parameter, where l is the azimuthal index of the flower Laguerre-Gaussian mode. In an experiment, we employ a diode-pumped solid-state laser resonator with intracavity second-harmonic generation to realize the formation of the quasi-nondiffracting focused beams.Item type:Item, Palladium-catalyzed regioselective synthesis of 2(2 '-biphenyl)benzimidazoles through C-H activation(2013-11-01) ;Chen, Li-Hsun ;Wu, Tz-Yi ;Paike, Vijaykumar ;Sun, Chung-Ming應用化學系An efficient palladium-catalyzed strategy through C-H bond activation for the synthesis of 2(2-biphenyl)-benzimidazoles is reported herein. The regioselective C-C bond formation proceeds in a sealed tube via oxidative C-H activation of ortho-directed 2-aryl-benzimidazole to couple with various iodobenzene analogs in high yields. This arylation exhibited high regioselectivity which is able to increase molecular diversity in difficult functionalized positions of parent molecules. This strategy provides a convenient and simple synthesis of biphenyl heterocyclic compounds with high regioselectivity.Item type:Item, Fluorescence Intrinsic Characterization of Excitation-Emission Matrix Using Multi-Dimensional Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition(2013-11-01) ;Chang, Chi-Ying ;Chang, Chia-Chi ;Hsiao, Tzu-Chien ;分子醫學與生物工程研究所資訊工程學系Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy is a noninvasive method for tissue diagnosis and has become important in clinical use. However, the intrinsic characterization of EEM fluorescence remains unclear. Photobleaching and the complexity of the chemical compounds make it difficult to distinguish individual compounds due to overlapping features. Conventional studies use principal component analysis (PCA) for EEM fluorescence analysis, and the relationship between the EEM features extracted by PCA and diseases has been examined. The spectral features of different tissue constituents are not fully separable or clearly defined. Recently, a non-stationary method called multi-dimensional ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD) was introduced; this method can extract the intrinsic oscillations on multiple spatial scales without loss of information. The aim of this study was to propose a fluorescence spectroscopy system for EEM measurements and to describe a method for extracting the intrinsic characteristics of EEM by MEEMD. The results indicate that, although PCA provides the principal factor for the spectral features associated with chemical compounds, MEEMD can provide additional intrinsic features with more reliable mapping of the chemical compounds. MEEMD has the potential to extract intrinsic fluorescence features and improve the detection of biochemical changes.Item type:Item, A note on hyper ellipse method for classifying biological and medical data(2013-11-01) ;Huang, Yao-Huei ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and FinanceThe classification of biological and medical datasets is essential to humanity. For a convolutional code with code rate k/(k + 1), its corresponding reciprocal dual code with rate 1/(k + 1) has smaller codeword space than the original code while k > 1, leading to a simplified trellis of the high code-rate code. The proposed decoder architecture can decode code rate k/(k + 1) constituent convolutional codes for k = 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16. Moreover, two parallel soft-in/soft-out (SISO) decoders are exploited in our turbo decoder by using the quadratic permutation polynomial (QPP) interleaver to improve the decoding speed. After fabricated in 1P9M CMOS 40 nm process, the proposed decoder with 1.27 mm(2) core area can achieve 535 Mbps throughput at 8/9 code rate, and the energy efficiency is 0.068 nJ/bit/iteration at 0.9 V.Item type:Item, Integrating conjoint analysis with quality function deployment to carry out customer-driven concept development for ultrabooks(2013-11-01) ;Wang, Chih-Hsuan ;Shih, Chih-Wen ;工業工程與管理學系Department of Industrial Engineering and ManagementA hybrid framework integrating conjoint analysis (CA) with quality function deployment (QFD) is presented to incorporate customer preferences into the process of product development. In particular, the proposed framework constitutes two sequential phases, namely, concept generation based on CA and prototype evaluation based on QFD. In addition, product features are characterized by customer requirements (CRs) and functional attributes (FAs). By means of DEMATEL (Decision Making and Trial Laboratory), the impacts of FAs on CRs are systematically identified to visualize their causalities. Instead of utilizing FAs, the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) is employed to assess potential prototypes in terms of CRs. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. For the ZC, the optimal code structure for an arbitrary finite blocklength is derived in the cases of two, three, and four codewords and conjectured in the case of five codewords. For the BSC, the optimal code structure for an arbitrary finite blocklength is derived in the cases of two and three codewords and conjectured in the case of four codewords. For a general BAC, the best codebooks under the assumption of a threshold decoder are derived for the case of two codewords. The derivation of these optimal codes relies on a new approach of constructing and analyzing the codebook matrix not rowwise (codewords), but columnwise. This new tool leads to an elegant definition of interesting code families that is recursive in the blocklength and admits their exact analysis of error performance. This allows for a comparison of the average error probability between all possible codebooks.Item type:Item, A Practical Optimization Framework for the Degree Distribution in LT Codes(2013-11-01) ;Chen, Chih-Ming ;Chen, Ying-Ping ;Shen, Tzu-Ching ;Zao, John K.資訊工程學系LT codes are the first practical rateless codes whose reception overhead totally depends on the degree distribution adopted. The capability of LT codes with a particular degree distribution named robust soliton has been theoretically analyzed; it asymptotically approaches the optimum when the message length approaches infinity. However, real applications making use of LT codes have finite number of input symbols. It is quite important to refine degree distributions because there are distributions whose performance can exceed that of the robust soliton distribution for short message length. In this work, a practical framework that employs evolutionary algorithms is proposed to search for better degree distributions. Our experiments empirically prove that the proposed framework is robust and can customize degree distributions for LT codes with different message length. The decoding error probabilities of the distributions found in the experiments compare well with those of robust soliton distributions. The significant improvement of LT codes with the optimized degree distributions is demonstrated in the paper.Item type:Item, Optimal delivery cycles for joint distribution of multi-temperature food(2013-11-01) ;Hsu, Chaug-Ing ;Chen, Wei-Ting ;Wu, Wei-Jen ;運輸與物流管理系 註:原交通所+運管所Department of Transportation and Logistics ManagementThe need for fresh, refrigerated, and frozen food has been continuously growing due to high demand for healthy and convenient diets in urban fast-paced daily living. Correspondingly, the market for low temperature logistics is expanding due to demand for low-temperature food, and the process of delivering food requiring storage and shipping in containers with different temperature ranges has become an important issue for carriers. This study analyzes optimal delivery cycles for jointly delivering multi-temperature food using Traditional Multi-Vehicle Distribution and Multi-Temperature Joint Distribution systems. We formulate mathematical models for the systems considering a variety of time-dependent demands and time-windows for delivering different temperature range foods to various customers. The models provide effective tools that determine delivery cycles and dispatching lists for carriers. The results show both carriers and shippers benefit from jointly delivering different temperature range foods using a single vehicle to ensure the freshness of the food. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In sensor networks, a sensor has two types of attributes: a geographic attribute (i.e, its spatial location) and non-geographic attributes (e.g., sensed readings). Sensor data are periodically collected and viewed as spatial data streams, where a spatial data stream consists of a sequence of data points exhibiting attributes in both the geographic and non-geographic domains. Previous studies have developed a dual clustering problem for spatial data by considering similarity-connected relationships in both geographic and non-geographic domains. However, the clustering processes in stream environments are time-sensitive because of frequently updated sensor data. For sensor data, the readings from one sensor are similar for a period, and the readings refer to temporal locality features. Using the temporal locality features of the sensor data, this study proposes an incremental clustering (IC) algorithm to discover clusters efficiently. The IC algorithm comprises two phases: cluster prediction and cluster refinement. The first phase estimates the probability of two sensors belonging to a cluster from the previous clustering results. According to the estimation, a coarse clustering result is derived. The cluster refinement phase then refines the coarse result. This study evaluates the performance of the IC algorithm using synthetic and real datasets. Experimental results show that the IC algorithm outperforms exiting approaches confirming the scalability of the IC algorithm. In addition, the effect of temporal locality features on the IC algorithm is analyzed and thoroughly examined in the experiments.Item type:Item, Walk-Assist Robot: A Novel Approach to Gain Selection of a Braking Controller Using Differential Flatness(2013-11-01) ;Ko, Chun-Hsu ;Young, Kuu-Young ;Huang, Yi-Che ;Agrawal, Sunil K.電機工程學系With increasing populations of the elderly in our society, robot technology will play an important role in providing functional mobility to humans. From the perspective of human safety, it is desirable that controllers for walk-assist robots be dissipative, i.e., the energy is supplied from the human to the walker, while the controller modulates this energy. The simplest form of a dissipating controller is a brake, where resistive torques are applied to the wheels proportional to their speeds. The fundamental question that we ask in this brief is how to modulate these proportional gains over time for the two wheels so that the walker can perform point-to-point motions. The unique contribution of this brief is a novel way in which the theory of differential flatness is used to plan the trajectory of these braking gains. Since the user input forces are not known a priori, the trajectory of the braking gain is computed iteratively during the motion. Simulation and experimental results show that the walk-assist robot, along with the structure of this proposed control scheme, can guide the user to reach the goal.Item type:Item, Cross-lagged relationships between problematic Internet use and lifestyle changes(2013-11-01) ;Lin, Chih-Hung ;Chen, Ssu-Kuang ;Chang, Shan-Mei ;Lin, Sunny S. J.教育研究所Cross-lagged analysis of panel survey data collected from Taiwanese college students (initially 387 males and 370 females) was used to examine the temporal relationship between problematic Internet use (PIU) and lifestyle changes during the first year in college. We hypothesized that a reciprocal relationship might exist between PIU and lifestyle changes. Structural equation modeling was adopted to test several nested cross-lagged relationship models. The results showed that four measures of lifestyle changes and PIU were moderately to highly stable across one year. Moreover, PIU in freshman year predicted negative changes in lifestyle in the following year, including a reduction of physical and social activities, irregular diet and unhealthy sleep. Lifestyle changes in freshman year, in contrast, did not predict PIU in sopho-more year; the hypothesized reciprocal relationship between PIU and lifestyle changes was not warranted. Implications and limitations are discussed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. SCE thin films, typically represented by high-temperature superconductor (HTS) cuprate and colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) manganite thin films, demonstrate tremendous anisotropic Seebeck effect. In this study, a La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 thin film grown on a tilted LaAlO3 substrate is tested with the fundamental, the second, the third, and the fourth harmonics (1064, 532, 355, 266 nm, respectively) of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser over a wide range of temperatures from room temperature to 16 K. The peak-value of the laser-induced thermoelectric voltage signal shows a good linear relationship with the laser energy per pulse in the measured wavelength and temperature ranges. The combined advantages over other commercial laser detectors such as nanosecond-order response and spectrally broad and flat response over a wide range of temperatures, in situ real-time measurement, and energy savings, make the device an ideal candidate for next-generation laser detectors and laser power/energy meters.Item type:Item, Analytic Solution to Product Acceptance Determination for Gold Bumping Process With Multiple Manufacturing Lines(2013-11-01) ;Pearn, Wen Lea ;Tai, Yu Ting ;Wu, Chia Huang ;Chuang, Ching Ching工業工程與管理學系In recent years, gold bumping process has been applied extensively for the package technology of liquid crystal display driver integrated circuit, which is an essential component in portable devices. Because the increasing requirement of high-definition display devices, the gold bumping process has become more difficult and it is requested to be of high quality with very low fraction of defectives. Unfortunately, conventional methods for product acceptance determination no longer work because any sample of reasonable size probably contains no defective gold bump product items. In addition, in the globally competitive manufacturing environment, gold bumping processes involving multiple manufacturing lines are quite common in the Science-Based Industrial Park in Hsinchu, Taiwan, because of economic scale considerations. In this paper, we provide analytical solutions to gold bump product acceptance determination, which provide both manufacturers and customers to reserve their own rights by compromising on a rule for gold bumping process with multiple manufacturing lines. For the convenience of inplant applications, we tabulate the number of required inspection units, the critical acceptance values for various manufacturer's risks and consumer's risks, and various number of manufacturing lines. For illustration purpose, a real application in a gold bumping factory, which is located in the Science-Based Industrial Park in Hsinchu, Taiwan, is included.
