Item type:Item, Theoretical Formulation and Simulation of Electronic Sum-Frequency Generation Spectroscopy(2013-11-14) ;Lin, Chih-Kai ;Hayashi, Michitoshi ;Lin, Sheng Hsien ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistrySum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for not only identifying molecular species but also analyzing orientation configurations on a surface/interface. In this Article, we presented reformulation of the theoretical framework of electronic SFG spectroscopy, the signal of which could be greatly enhanced by tuning one or two incident beam frequencies resonant with electronic excited states. Simulated electronic SFG spectra resonant at the sum frequency of a pair of coumarin-derivative pH-indicator surfactant molecules, 4-methyl-7-hydroxycoumarin and its anionic counterpart (MHC/MHC-), floating on the water surface were carried out as a demonstration.Item type:Item, EMBEDDED INDUSTRIAL CONTROLLER WITH BICYCLE FRAME SHAPE(2013-11-14) ;Tseng Yung-Sheng ;Shih Ching-Wei ;Jeng Shyr-Long ;Chang Edward-YiChang Chia-HuaAn embedded industrial controller with a bicycle frame shape is disclosed. The time-resolved two-dimensional difference absorption (Delta A) spectra are observed between -314 and 1267 fs. By performing the Fourier transform and spectrogram analysis, vibrational modes in THIATS are observed at 285, 485, 555, 824, and 1633 cm(-1) and there was a modulation of the vibrational frequencies around 1633 cm(-1) which depend on the delay time, respectively. By the analysis of the modulation, energy flow is found to take place from other modes to the 1633 cm(-1) mode through the low frequency mode with similar to 50 cm(-1). Also, by fitting the real-time traces of Delta A with the sum of two exponential functions and a constant term, the average lifetimes of three electronically excited states were found to be tau(1) = 52 +/- 5 fs and tau(2) = 540 +/- 78 fs. By performing single-exponential fitting around the stationary absorption peak at 1.990 eV, in the negative time range, the electronic dephasing time, T-2(ele), is determined to be 18.30 fs.Item type:Item, Deciphering the Catalysis-Associated Conformational Changes of Human Adenylate Kinase 1 with Single-Molecule Spectroscopy(2013-11-14) ;Lin, Chien Y. ;Huang, Jung Y. ;Lo, Leu-Wei ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsHuman adenylate kinase isoenzyme 1 (AK1) is the key enzyme in maintaining the cellular energy homeostasis. The catalysis-associated conformational changes of AK1 involve large-amplitude rearrangements. To decipher the conformational changes of AK1 at the single-molecule level, we tagged AK1 with two identical fluorophores, one near the substrate-binding site and the other at the boundary of the core domain. We found that magnesium ion binding to AK1 increases the structural heterogeneity of AK1, whereas ADP binding reduces the structural heterogeneity. We exploited the hidden Markov model to extract the underlying catalysis-associated conformational dynamics and determined thermodynamic parameters of the multiple catalytic pathways. The third-order correlation difference calculated from photon fluctuation traces reveals the irreversible nature of the conformational motions, suggesting that single-molecule AK1 is in a nonequilibrium steady state. This discovery offers a fresh viewpoint to look into the molecular mechanisms of cellular biochemistry.Item type:Item, Words with a generalized restricted growth property(2013-11-15) ;Fuchs, Michael ;Prodinger, Helmut ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsWords where each new letter (natural number) can never be too large, compared to the ones that were seen already, are enumerated. F. ;Chen, C. Y. ;Li, F. W. ;Hsu, C. H.Chou, W. C.Good-optical-quality, thick InxGa1-xN films with high In content were grown using a homemade two-heater metal-organic chemical vapor deposition system. By varying the growth temperature, it was Found that the In composition of the InGaN epilayer varied from 18 to 59% as the substrate temperature decreased from 750 to 625 degrees C. Our results show that the optical properties in terms of the emission peak wavelength and linewidth are uniformly distributed throughout the entire 2 in. wafer for the x=0.40 InGaN sample. The resultant mean peak wavelength and FWHM are 808 +/- 6 nm and 229 +/- 18 meV, respectively, at 18 K. In addition, for the InGaN film grown at 625 degrees C, a noticeable decrease in the In composition occurred when the ceiling temperature was >800 degrees C, indicative of the occurrence of parasitic reactions in the gas phase. T.Yu, Y. C.This report describes the development of a compact microcell irradiation system in the 3 MV MN Van de Graaff accelerator in the Accelerator Laboratory of National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). The main feature of this system is backscattering, a technique whereby a 100 nm gold scattering foil is placed in the center of a scattering chamber, instead of a 90 bending magnet. The incident particles produced by the accelerator bombard the scattering foil and scatter isotropically. A set of micro pinholes was installed above the scattering foil and directed the 90 scattering particles to irradiate the cell target. This innovation simplifies the system design and massively reduces the cost and space requirements for system construction. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. The highest theoretical Q factor of 120,000 is obtained. The Fourier transformation of field distribution shows that the enhancement arises from the component reduction of a leaky mode. The Q-factor improvement has also been demonstrated experimentally with the highest value of 11,700. Our design could be useful for studying light-matter interaction in an H1 cavity as the mode volume only increases slightly. This study applied TDR methodology to provide two new designs for a water level sensing waveguide that can be applied in difficult field conditions such as in an underpass, tunnel, culvert, or sewer, etc. Two types of water level sensing waveguides are presented, including a rigid assembled coaxial pipe and a flexible adhered parallel wire. The corresponding data reduction procedure is also proposed to account for uncertainty of travel time analysis and calibrate the velocity of pulse propagation along the waveguides. The satisfactory performance of both the proposed TDR waveguides and data reduction method was experimentally validated. A field case study further demonstrated the feasibility of the TDR technique for water level measurements under typical urban drainage conditions. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Bi2Se3 films with highly c-axis-oriented and controlled textures were fabricated by maintaining the helium gas pressure (P) between 0.7 and 173 Pa and the substrate temperature (T-s) between 200 and 350 degrees C. The carrier concentration (n) of films decreased with increasing P, which was attributed to the increase of Se concentration from Se deficiency (P <= 6.7 Pa) to stoichiometry to slight Se enrichment (P >= 40 Pa). The Seebeck coefficient (S) was enhanced considerably because of the reduction in n, following the S similar to n(-2/3) relation approximately. The average grain size increased from approximately 100 to 500 nm when T-s was raised from 200 to 350 degrees C, resulting in enhanced carrier mobility (mu) and electrical conductivity (sigma) and a reduced full width at half maximum of (0 0 6) peaks. The shape of grains transformed from rice-like at T-s of 200-250 degrees C to layered-hexagonal platelets (L-HPs) or super-layered flakes (S-LFs) at T-s of 300-350 degrees C. Films that were grown at 300 degrees C and 40 Pa and contained highly c-axis oriented L-HPs possessed the highest power factor (PF =S-2 sigma), which reached 5.54 mu W cm(-1) K-2, where S=75.8 mu V/K and sigma = 963.8 S cm(-1). Most manufacturing companies, however, need to balance the trade-offs between enhancing product variety and controlling manufacturing cost. In order to fulfil the goal of market-oriented product development, customer satisfaction needs to be well incorporated into the decision-making process of product configuration. Therefore, a hybrid framework is presented to address two critical issues in new product development: customer satisfaction and product configuration. In the beginning, fuzzy Kano model is employed to elicit customer perception of product attributes and extract customer satisfaction. Consecutively, information entropy is used for deriving the important weights of product attributes. Lastly, by means of Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution, competing design alternatives are efficiently prioritised and configured. In particular, a case study on configuring varieties of smart pads is demonstrated to justify the validity of the proposed framework. With consideration of and the pricing policies of multi-segments, a systematic framework to effectively bridge customer satisfaction and product configuration is offered for the academics and industrial practitioners.Item type:Item, Conjugation of Benzylvanillin and Benzimidazole Structure Improves DNA Binding with Enhanced Antileukemic Properties(2013-11-15) ;Al-Mudaris, Zena A. ;Majid, Aman S. A. ;Ji, Dan ;Al-Mudarris, Ban A.Chen, Shih-HsunBenzyl-o-vanillin and benzimidazole nucleus serve as important pharmacophore in drug discovery. The benzyl vanillin (2-(benzyloxy)-3-methoxybenzaldehyde) compound shows anti-proliferative activity in HL60 leukemia cancer cells and can effect cell cycle progression at G2/M phase. Its apoptosis activity was due to disruption of mitochondrial functioning. In this study, we have studied a series of compounds consisting of benzyl vanillin and benzimidazole structures. We hypothesize that by fusing these two structures we can produce compounds that have better anticancer activity with improved specificity particularly towards the leukemia cell line. Here we explored the anticancer activity of three compounds namely 2-(2-benzyloxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1H-benzimidazole, 2MP, N-1-(2-benzyloxy-3-methoxybenzyl)-2-(2-benzyloxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1H-benzimidazole, 2XP, and (R) and (S)-1-(2-benzyloxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2, 2, 2-trichloroethyl benzenesulfonate, 3BS and compared their activity to 2-benzyloxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde, (Bn1), the parent compound. 2XP and 3BS induces cell death of U937 leukemic cell line through DNA fragmentation that lead to the intrinsic caspase 9 activation. DNA binding study primarily by the equilibrium binding titration assay followed by the Viscosity study reveal the DNA binding through groove region with intrinsic binding constant 7.39 mu M/bp and 6.86 mu M/bp for 3BS and 2XP respectively. 2XP and 3BS showed strong DNA binding activity by the UV titration method with the computational drug modeling showed that both 2XP and 3BS failed to form any electrostatic linkages except via hydrophobic interaction through the minor groove region of the nucleic acid. The benzylvanillin alone (Bn1) has weak anticancer activity even after it was combined with the benzimidazole (2MP), but after addition of another benzylvanillin structure (2XP), stronger activity was observed. Also, the combination of benzylvanillin with benzenesulfonate (3BS) significantly improved the anticancer activity of Bn1. The present study provides a new insight of benzyl vanillin derivatives as potential anti-leukemic agent.Item type:Item, Efficient numerical methods for computing ground states of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates based on their characterizations(2013-11-15) ;Bao, Weizhu ;Chern, I-Liang ;Zhang, Yanzhi ;應用數學系數學建模與科學計算所(含中心)In this paper, we propose efficient numerical methods for computing ground states of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with/without the Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic field B (X). When B (X) not equal 0, a numerical method is introduced to compute the ground states and it is also applied to study properties of ground states. Numerical results suggest that the densities of m(F) = +/- 1 components in ground states are identical for any nonzero B(x). In particular, if B(x) B not equal 0 is a constant, the ground states satisfy the single-mode approximation. When B(x) 0, efficient and simpler numerical methods are presented to solve the ground states of spin-1 BECs based on their ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic characterizations. Numerical simulations show that our methods are more efficient than those in the literature. In addition, some conjectures are made from our numerical observations. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc.
