Item type:Item, Pervasive brain monitoring and data sharing based on multi-tier distributed computing and linked data technology(2014-06-03) ;Zao, John K. ;Gan, Tchin-Tze ;You, Chun-Kai ;Chung, Cheng-EnWang, Yu-TeEEG-based Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are facing basic challenges in real-world applications. The technical difficulties in developing truly wearable BCI systems that are capable of making reliable real-time prediction of users\' cognitive states in dynamic real-life situations may seem almost insurmountable at times. Fortunately, recent advances in miniature sensors, wireless communication and distributed computing technologies offered promising ways to bridge these chasms. In this paper, we report an attempt to develop a pervasive on-line EEG-BCI system using state-of-art technologies including multi-tier Fog and Cloud Computing, semantic Linked Data search, and adaptive prediction/classification models. To verify our approach, we implement a pilot system by employing wireless dry-electrode EEG headsets and MEMS motion sensors as the front-end devices, Android mobile phones as the personal user interfaces, compact personal computers as the near-end Fog Servers and the computer clusters hosted by the Taiwan National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) as the far-end Cloud Servers. We succeeded in conducting synchronous multi-modal global data streaming in March and then running a multi-player on-line EEG-BCI game in September, 2013. We are currently working with the ARL Translational Neuroscience Branch to use our system in real-life personal stress monitoring and the UCSD Movement Disorder Center to conduct in-home Parkinson\'s disease patient monitoring experiments. We shall proceed to develop the necessary BCI ontology and introduce automatic semantic annotation and progressive model refinement capability to our system.Item type:Item, Pervasive brain monitoring and data sharing based on multi-tier distributed computing and linked data technology(2014-06-03) ;Zao, John K. ;Gan, Tchin-Tze ;You, Chun-Kai ;Chung, Cheng-EnWang, Yu-TeEEG-based Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are facing basic challenges in real-world applications. Localization of pi-electron rotation by using laser pulses is expected to play an essential role in nanoscience. The pi-electron rotation created at a selected aromatic ring of a single molecule induces a local intense electromagnetic field, which is a new type of ultrafast optical control functioning. We propose a quantum localization of coherent pi-electron angular momentum in (P)-2,2\'-biphenol, which is a simple, covalently linked chiral aromatic ring chain molecule. The localization considered here consists of sequential two steps: the first step is to localize the pi-electron angular momentum at a selected ring of the two benzene rings, and the other is to maintain the localization. Optimal control theory was used for obtaining the optimized electric fields of linearly polarized laser pulses to realize the localization. The optimal electric fields and the resultant coherent electronic dynamics are analyzed.Item type:Item, Quantum Localization of Coherent pi-Electron Angular Momentum in (P)-2,2 '-Biphenol(2014-06-05) ;Yamaki, Masahiro ;Mineo, Hirobumi ;Teranishi, Yoshiaki ;Hayashi, MichitoshiFujimura, YuichiControlling g-electrons with delocalized character is one of the fundamental issues in femtosecond and attosecond chemistry. In this study, silicone resin was designed to have a low molecular weight and a highly nonpolar chemical structure. The silicone resin was applied to silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives. The molecular structure of silicone resin was characterized by FT-IR, GPC, H-1-NMR, and Si-29-NMR spectroscopic techniques. Properties such as thermal stability, solubility, hydrophobic, and transparent properties were researched and compared. When the chlorotrimethylsilane increased, it appeared that the amount of silanol groups, molecular weight and thermal stability decreased, while the hydrophobic and transparent properties increased. The silicone resin was completely soluble in toluene and xylene. It was also applied to silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives, resulting in good peel adhesion. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. The present invention uses a work control logic unit to detect load imbalance between different types of processors, and employs a number of dynamic reconfigurable heterogeneous processors to offload the heavier loaded processors. Hardware utilization of such design can be enhanced, and variation in computation needs among different computation phases can be better handled. To design the dynamic reconfigurable heterogeneous processors, a method of how to choose the basic building blocks and place the routing components is included. With the present invention, performance can be maximized at a minimal hardware cost. Hence the dynamic reconfigurable heterogeneous processor(s) so constructed and the load balancing and dynamic allocation method together will have the best performance at least cost.Item type:Item, Fluctuation-induced transport of two coupled particles: Effect of the interparticle interaction(2014-06-07) ;Makhnovskii, Yurii A. ;Rozenbaum, Viktor M. ;Sheu, Sheh-Yi ;Yang, Dah-YenTrakhtenberg, Leonid I.We consider a system of two coupled particles fluctuating between two states, with different interparticle interaction potentials and particle friction coefficients. An external action drives the interstate transitions that induces reciprocating motion along the internal coordinate x (the interparticle distance). The system moves unidirectionally due to rectification of the internal motion by asymmetric friction fluctuations and thus operates as a dimeric motor that converts input energy into net movement. We focus on how the law of interaction between the particles affects the dimer transport and, in particular, the role of thermal noise in the motion inducing mechanism. It is argued that if the interaction potential behaves at large distances as x(alpha), depending on the value of the exponent a, the thermal noise plays a constructive (alpha > 2), neutral (alpha = 2), or destructive (alpha < 2) role. In the case of alpha = 1, corresponding piecewise linear potential profiles, an exact solution is obtained and discussed in detail. In this study, we adopted a trapping approach in which we used a monolayer thin film of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS56k-b-P4VP(8k))-a highly asymmetric diblock copolymer having a spherical micelle morphology to incorporate various amounts of one-phase-synthesized dodecanethiol-passivated silver (DT-Ag) NPs and a fixed amount of ligand-exchanged pyridine-coated gold (Py-Au) NPs into the polystyrene (PS) and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) blocks, respectively. We characterized the packing of these metal NPs in the two blocks of the nanostructured diblock copolymer using reciprocal-space synchrotron grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) as well as atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in the real space. The packing of the Ag NPs in the PS block was dependent on their content, which we tuned by varying the concentrations in the composite solution at a constant rate of spin-coating. The two-dimensional hierarchical arrangement of Ag and Au NPs within the BCP thin films was enhanced after addition of the Py-Au NPs into the P4VP block and after spin-coating a thinner film from a low concentration solution (0.1 wt%), due to the DT-Ag NPs accumulating around the Py-Au/P4VP cores; this two-dimensional hierarchical arrangement decreased at a critical DT-Ag NP weight ratio (c) of 0.8 when incorporating the Py-Au NPs into the P4VP domains through spin-coating at higher solution concentration (0.5 wt%), where the DT-Ag NPs realigned by rotating 20 degrees along the z axis in the real space, due to oversaturation of the DT-Ag NPs within the PS domains.Item type:Item, Multi-level control of conductive nano-filament evolution in HfO2 ReRAM by pulse-train operations(2014-06-07) ;Zhao, L. ;Chen, H. -Y. ;Wu, S. -C. ;Jiang, Z.Yu, S.Precise electrical manipulation of nanoscale defects such as vacancy nano-filaments is highly desired for the multi-level control of ReRAM. In this paper we present a systematic investigation on the pulse-train operation scheme for reliable multi-level control of conductive filament evolution. By applying the pulse-train scheme to a 3 bit per cell HfO2 ReRAM, the relative standard deviations of resistance levels are improved up to 80% compared to the single-pulse scheme. The observed exponential relationship between the saturated resistance and the pulse amplitude provides evidence for the gap-formation model of the filament-rupture process.
