Y. ;Cheng, H. M. ;Chen, H. R. ;Huang, K. F.Tsai, L. N.Temperature dependent magnetic and phonon anomalies in epitaxial self-assembled CoFe2O4 (CFO) rods embedded in BaTiO3 (BTO) matrix nanostructures were investigated. The temperature dependence of A(1)(2TO) phonon frequency of BTO indicates that the BTO matrix experiences structural transformations. The lattice strain produced during the structural transformations drives spin reorientation in CFO rods, resulting in anomalous changes of magnetization. Through correlating the phonon anomalies with the increase of in-plane spin ordering, we show the spin-phonon coupling induces the softening of A(1g) and A(1)(2TO) phonons. It suggests that spin strongly couples with lattice strain and phonons in this nanostructure. A.We previously reported a highly efficient protocol for bimetallic Ni-Al-catalyzed hydroheteroarylation of styrene with benzimidazole based on C-H bond activation. We have now delineated the mechanism of this process, providing a rationale for an observed switch in regioselectivity in the presence of the Lewis acid, AlMe3. The present mechanistic study gives insights for the rational development of catalysts that exhibit required linear/branched selectivity.Item type:Item, Universal fluorescent tri-probe ligation equipped with capillary electrophoresis for targeting SMN1 and SMN2 genes in diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy(2014-06-23) ;Wang, Chun-Chi ;Shih, Chi-Jen ;Jong, Yuh-Jyh ;Wu, Shou-Mei生物科技學院This is the first ligase chain reaction used for diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Universal fluorescent tri-probe ligation (UFTPL), a novel strategy used for distinguishing the multi-nucleotide alternations at single base, is developed to quantitatively analyze the SMN1/SMN2 genes in diagnosis of SMA. Ligase chain reaction was performed by adding three probes including universal fluorescent probe, connecting probe and recognizing probe to differentiate single nucleotide polymorphisms in UFTPL. Our approach was based on the two UFTPL products of survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) and SMN2 genes (the difference of 9 mer) and analyzed by capillary electrophoresis (CE). We successfully determined various gene dosages of SMN1 and SMN2 genes in homologous or heterologous subjects. By using the UFTPL-CE method, the SMN1 and SMN2 genes were fully resolved with the resolution of 2.16 +/- 0.37 (n = 3). The r values of SMN1 and SMN2 regression curves over a range of 1-4 copies were above 0.9944. Of the 48 DNA samples, the data of gene dosages were corresponding to that analyzed by conformation sensitive CE and denatured high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC). This technique was found to be a good methodology for quantification or determination of the relative genes having multi-nucleotide variants at single base. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. However, previous experiments concerning SO coupling are performed far beyond the superconducting state and thus a direct demonstration of how SO coupling affects superconductivity remains elusive. Here we investigate the SO coupling in the critical region of superconducting transition on Al nanofilms, in which the strength of disorder and spin relaxation by SO coupling are changed by varying the film thickness. At temperatures T sufficiently above the superconducting critical temperature T-c, clear signature of SO coupling reveals itself in showing a magneto-resistivity peak. When T < T-c, the resistivity peak can still be observed; however, its line-shape is now affected by the onset of the quasi two-dimensional superconductivity. By studying such magneto-resistivity peaks under different strength of spin relaxation, we highlight the important effects of SO interaction on superconductivity.Item type:Item, The evolution of the coding exome of the Arabidopsis species - the influences of DNA methylation, relative exon position, and exon length(2014-06-25) ;Chen, Feng-Chi ;Chuang, Trees-Juen ;Lin, Hsuan-Yu ;Hsu, Min-Kung生物科技學系Background: The evolution of the coding exome is a major driving force of functional divergence both between species and between protein isoforms. Exons at different positions in the transcript or in different transcript isoforms may (1) mutate at different rates due to variations in DNA methylation level; and (2) serve distinct biological roles, and thus be differentially targeted by natural selection. Furthermore, intrinsic exonic features, such as exon length, may also affect the evolution of individual exons. Importantly, the evolutionary effects of these intrinsic/extrinsic features may differ significantly between animals and plants. Such inter-lineage differences, however, have not been systematically examined. Results: Here we examine how DNA methylation at CpG dinucleotides (CpG methylation), in the context of intrinsic exonic features (exon length and relative exon position in the transcript), influences the evolution of coding exons of Arabidopsis thaliana. We observed fairly different evolutionary patterns in A. thaliana as compared with those reported for animals. Firstly, the mutagenic effect of CpG methylation is the strongest for internal exons and the weakest for first exons despite the stringent selective constraints on the former group. Secondly, the mutagenic effect of CpG methylation increases significantly with length in first exons but not in the other two exon groups. Thirdly, CpG methylation level is correlated with evolutionary rates (d(S), d(N), and the d(N)/d(S) ratio) with markedly different patterns among the three exon groups. The correlations are generally positive, negative, and mixed for first, last, and internal exons, respectively. Fourthly, exon length is a CpG methylation-independent indicator of evolutionary rates, particularly for d(N) and the d(N)/d(S) ratio in last and internal exons. Finally, the evolutionary patterns of coding exons with regard to CpG methylation differ significantly between Arabidopsis species and mammals. Conclusions: Our results suggest that intrinsic features, including relative exonic position in the transcript and exon length, play an important role in the evolution of A. thaliana coding exons. Furthermore, CpG methylation is correlated with exonic evolutionary rates differentially between A. thaliana and animals, and may have served different biological roles in the two lineages.Item type:Item, Symmetry and Coplanarity of Organic Molecules Affect their Packing and Photovoltaic Properties in Solution-Processed Solar Cells(2014-06-25) ;Lan, Shang-Che ;Raghunath, Putikam ;Lu, Yueh-Hsin ;Wang, Yi-ChienLin, Shu-WeiIn this study we synthesized three acceptor donor acceptor (A-D-A) organic molecules, TB3t-BT, TB3t-BTT, and TB3t-BDT, comprising 2,2\'-bithiophene (BT), benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b\':5,6-d \'\']trithiophene (BTT), and benzo[ 1,2-b;4,5-b\']dithiophene (BDT) units, respectively, as central cores (donors), terthiophene (3t) as pi-conjugated spacers, and thiobarbituric acid (TB) units as acceptors. These molecules display different degrees of coplanarity as evidenced by the differences in dihedral angles calculated from density functional theory. By using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffractions for probing their crystallization characteristics and molecular packing in active layers, we found that the symmetry and coplanarity of molecules would significantly affect the melting/crystallization behavior and the formation of crystalline domains in the blend film with fullerene, PC61BM. TB3t-BT and TB3t-BDT, which each possess an inversion center and display high crystallinity in their pristine state, but they have different driving forces in crystallization, presumably because of different degrees of coplanarity. On the other hand, the asymmetrical TB3t-BTT behaved as an amorphous material even though it possesses a coplanar structure. Among our tested systems, the device comprising as-spun TB3t-BDT/PC61BM (6:4, w/w) active layer featured crystalline domains and displayed the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.1%. In contrast, the as-spun TB3t-BT/PC61BM (6:4, w/w) active layer showed well-mixed morphology and with a device PCE of 0.2%; it increased to 3.9% after annealing the active layer at 150 degrees C for 15 min. As for TB3t-BTT, it required a higher content of fullerene in the TB3t-BTT/PC61BM (4:6, w/w) active layer to optimize its device PCE to 1.6%.
