Independent measurement of the neutrino mixing angle theta(13) via neutron capture on hydrogen at Daya Bay

A new measurement of the theta(13) mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of the theta(13) measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GWth reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as sin(2)2 theta(13) = 0.083 +/- 0.018 in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain sin(2)2 theta(13) = 0.089 +/- 0.008 as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

TiN thin films were deposited on MgO (100) substrates at different substrate temperatures using rf sputtering with Ar/N-2 ratio of about 10. At 700 degrees C, the growth rate of TiN was approximately 0.05 mu m/h. The structural and electrical properties of TiN thin films were characterized with x-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Hall measurements. For all deposition conditions, XRD results show that the TiN films can be in an epitaxy with MgO with cube-on-cube orientation relationship of (001)(TiN) // (001)(MgO) and [100](TiN) // [100](MgO). TEM with selected-area electron diffraction pattern verifies the epitaxial growth of the TiN films on MgO. SEM and AFM show that the surface of the TiN film is very smooth with roughness approximately 0.26 nm. The minimum resistivity of the films can be as low as 45 mu Omega cm.

Stainless steel (316L) and 8mol pct Y2O3-stabilized zirconia (8Y-ZrO2) were bonded using a Ti-Ni-Ti multilayer at 1173K (900 degrees C) for 1h. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy specimens were prepared by an innovative focused ion beam plus lift-out technique. In addition to acicular alpha-Ti, the dissolution of Fe, Cr, and Ni diffusing outwards from 316L into beta-Ti led to the precipitation of the omega (omega) phase with different variants in the residual Ti foil between 316L and Ni. The omega-phase was not found in the residual Ti foil between Ni and 8Y-ZrO2, while Ti2Ni precipitates were precipitated in some alpha-Ti grains owing to the exclusion of Ni from the beta-Ti.

Effect of layout on electromigration characteristics in copper dual damascene interconnects

This study demonstrates that the electromigration (EM) behavior of dual damascene Cu lines is strongly affected by the layout which surrounded the tested EM lines, especially for Cu line below 0.10 mu m used for 40 nm or below technologies. The Cu EM lifetime declines as the number of local dummy lines increase, and the global dummy line density increases with the width of the Cu line below 0.063 mu m. This work presents mechanisms of layout effects that explain the EM characteristics and can be exploited to improve the layout effect. Therefore, not only the stressed Cu line structures, but also the surrounding layouts must to be considered in assessing EM reliability of a real IC circuit in 40 nm or below technology.
