Synthesis of cyclopentyloxy terphenyl liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy

Liquid crystalline materials possessing negative dielectric anisotropy (Delta epsilon) have attracted considerable attention because they can be used to formulate eutectic mixture for several display applications. The negative Delta epsilon can be achieved by introducing a lateral polar substituent onto the mesogen core of a liquid crystalline material, and fluorine atoms are usually used because of the small size and high electronegativity. 2,3-ortho-Difluoro substituent liquid crystals exhibit stable and profound physical properties such as the low viscosity, strong negative Delta epsilon, and high solubility. To avoid the decrease of the mesophase range, 2,3-ortho-difluorophenyl is often placed next to the terminal chain. In this paper, we have synthesised a new series of 2,3-ortho-difluoroterphenyl liquid crystals with a negative dielectric anisotropy. Ether oxygen is introduced to the structure because it can further increase the lateral dipole moment. 3-Alkylcyclopentane end group decreases both the melting point and the viscosity, which makes it an appropriate substituent for negative Delta epsilon 2,3-ortho-difluoroterphenyl liquid crystals. The mesomorphic properties as well as the optical anisotropies of the synthesised liquid crystals are discussed in this paper. All compounds in the series are found to possess highly negative dielectric anisotropy, wide mesophase ranges; therefore, they have a great potential to formulate eutectic mixture for liquid crystal displays.
Broadband cholesteric liquid crystal devices with poly(N-vinyl carbazole) microstructures

The particular thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method was developed by using poly(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) dissolved in liquid crystal (LC) layer recently. Permanent scattering is produced via the particular TIPS due to the formation of poly-domain LCs. In this work, we applied the particular TIPS to a conventional cholesteric LC (CLC) device. A broadband CLC device with a poly-domain structure was demonstrated by using the particular TIPS of CLC and PVK. The CLC device fabricated by two indium tin oxide glass substrates coated with PVK films generated the rough PVK layers and microstructures when the device was cooled from a temperature higher than the clear point of CLCs. The produced poly-domain planar texture of CLCs still preserved the bistability. A high cooling rate and PVK concentration both increased the reflection bandwidth of the CLC devices.
Magnetoelectric effect induced by the delocalised Nb-93m state

We herein report on the density- and temperature-dependent decay of the Nb-93m nuclear excited atom and present a simple interpretation of the underlying physics. This anomaly indicates nuclear resonant absorption and delocalisation of the long-lived Mossbauer state in the crystal. A non-linear magnetoelectric response, on low-frequency drive current, appeared in the bulk metal of a high-purity niobium crystal and then disappeared along with the disappearance of delocalised nuclear excitation. Several non-linear resonant peaks, of the order of several hundred Hertz, increased in magnitude with the applied magnetic field, and the central frequencies of these peaks decreased with temperature.
Supervisors as good coaches: influences of coaching on employees\' in-role behaviors and proactive career behaviors

Coaching as an effective leadership initiative in organizations has gained increasing attention from scholars. This study investigates the effects of coaching on employees\' in-role behaviors (IRBs) and proactive career behaviors (PCBs), while also exploring the mediating role of psychological empowerment. Data were collected from a sample of 324 employee-supervisor pairs from 11 service companies in Taiwan. The results show that coaching was positively related to both IRBs and PCBs. Moreover, psychological empowerment fully mediated the coaching-IRB relationship and partially mediated the coaching-PCB relationship. Implications for managerial practices and future research are derived from these findings.
Inhibitory Effect of Excessive Glucose on Its Biochemical Pathway and the Growth of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) Cells

In this study, we found the specific growth rate of CHO cells being reduced when glucose increased from 1 to 10g/L. Under high glucose, we show a 41% increase in lactate dehydrogenase activity consistent with a 70% rate increase in lactate production. The pyruvate kinase activity was significantly increased. However, the activities of citrate synthase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase involved in the TCA cycle were attenuated. We propose that pyruvate produced from glycolysis is utilized in a lesser extent over the TCA cycle under high-glucose conditions. Thus, the pyruvate is largely converted to lactate, which is toxic to the cells.
Application of project-based change management in construction: a case study

Real-time information is vital to enhance dynamic control and management via information sharing and analysis in order to reduce construction conflicts and project delays. However, most construction project management programs are ineffective for project prompt responses, especially with respect to change management. This work presents a novel construction project management system called the web project-based change management (WPCM) system. The WPCM system responds to changes in information efficiently in order to facilitate change management among project participants (e.g. general contractor, suppliers, and subcontractors) in a construction project environment. Capable of increasing information sharing in construction change management, web-based technology can also provide cost savings via the Internet. A case study involving a commercial building project in Taiwan demonstrates the effectiveness of both the proposed WPCM system and information sharing in change control during the construction phase. In addition to increasing the efficiency of change control and management for a general contractor, as well as dynamic project tracking and management, the proposed system enables subcontractors and suppliers to access and manage the change information timely. Future work should implement the system functions comprehensively and apply the system to additional projects more strictly for further verification of its reliability.
