The as-quenched Fe-9.0Al-30Mn-1.8C (in wt.%) alloy gas nitrided at 550 degrees C for 4 h show excellent corrosion resistance investigated in 3.5% NaCl and 10% HCl solutions. Owing to the high corrosion resistance components, the gas-nitrided layer consists mainly of AlN with a slight amount of Fe3N and Fe4N identified by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction technique. Therefore, the pitting potential and corrosion potential of the nitrided sample are + 1860 mV and + 30 mV, respectively. Surprisingly, it is worthy to be pointed out that the nitrided and then tensile-tested alloy reveals very shallow in fracture depth and the excellent lattice coherence is shown between the nitrided layer and the substrate. Moreover, due to the extremely high nitrogen concentration (about 17-18 wt.%) at stretched surface, the corrosion resistance of present gas-nitrided and then tensile-tested alloy is superior to those optimally gas-nitrided or plasma-nitrided high-strength alloy steels, as well as martensitic stainless steels. The nitrided and then stretched alloy still retains a satisfactory corrosion resistance (E-pit = + 890 mV; E-corr = + 10 mV). Furthermore, only nanoscale-size pits were observed on the corroded surface after being immersed in 10% HCl for 24 h. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Integrated three-dimensional photonic nanostructures for achieving near-unity solar absorption and superhydrophobicity

In this paper, we proposed and realized 3D photonic nanostructures consisting of ultra- thin graded index antireflective coatings (ARCs) and woodpile photonic crystals. The use of the integrated ARC and photonic crystal structure can achieve broadband, broad- angle near unity solar absorption. The amorphous silicon based photonic nanostructure experimentally shows an average absorption of similar to 95% for 400-620 nm over a wide angular acceptance of theta = 0 degrees - 60 degrees. Theoretical studies show that a Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) based structure can achieve an average absorption of > 95% for lambda = 400-870 nm. Furthermore, the use of the slanted SiO2 nanorod ARC surface layer by glancing angle deposition exhibits Cassie- Baxter state wetting, and superhydrophobic surface is obtained with highest water contact angle theta(CB) similar to 153 degrees. These properties are fundamentally important for achieving maximum solar absorption and surface self-cleaning in thin film solar cell applications. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

The simplest Criegee intermediate CH2OO is important in atmospheric chemistry. It has been detected in the reaction of CH2I + O-2 with various spectral methods, including infrared spectroscopy; infrared absorption of CH2OO was recorded at resolution 1.0 cm(-1) in our laboratory. We have improved our system and recorded the infrared spectrum of CH2OO at resolution 0.25 cm(-1) with rotational structures partially resolved. Observed vibrational wavenumbers and relative intensities are improved from those of the previous report and agree well with those predicted with quantum-mechanical calculations using the MULTIMODE method on an accurate potential energy surface. Observed rotational structures also agree with the simulated spectra according to theoretical predictions. In addition to derivation of critical vibrational and rotational parameters of the vibrationally excited states to confirm the assignments, the spectrum with improved resolution provides new assignments for bands 2 nu(9) at 1234.2 cm(-1) and nu(5) at 1213.3 cm(-1); some hot bands and combination bands are also tentatively assigned. New non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers containing cholesterol, triazole and biphenylene segments have been synthesized via click reaction. Increase in the flexible spacers length affects the mesophase formation. The homologues with short and medium alkyl spacer exhibit SmA* and SmC* phases whilst the analogue with the longest spacer favors the formation of enantiotropic SmA and N* phases. The XRD studies reveal the emergence of the SmA* and SmC* phases that can be associated with the monolayer ordering of these dimers. Further investigation through a comparison study shows that the triazole ring affects the mesophase formation wherein apart from the molecular dipole the subtle electrostatic interaction and van der Waal\'s forces enhance the SmC* phase.
