Item type:Item, Novel transport function of adherens junction revealed by live imaging in Drosophila(2015-08-07) ;Li, Yu-Chiao ;Yang, Wen-Ting ;Cheng, Lien-Chieh ;Lin, Chiao-MingHo, Yu-HueiAdherens junctions are known for their role in mediating cell cell adhesion. DE-cadherin and Echinoid are the principle adhesion molecules of adherens junctions in Drosophila epithelia. Here, using live imaging to trace the movement of endocytosed Echinoid vesicles in the epithelial cells of Drosophila embryos, we demonstrate that Echinoid vesicles co-localize and move with Rab5-or Rab11-positive endosomes. Surprisingly, these Echinoid-containing endosomes undergo directional cell-to-cell movement, through adherens junctions. Consistent with this, cell-to-cell movement of Echinoid vesicles requires the presence of DE-cadherin at adherens junctions. Live imaging further revealed that Echinoid vesicles move along adherens junction-associated microtubules into adjacent cells, a process requiring a kinesin motor. Importantly, DE-cadherin- and EGFR-containing vesicles also exhibit intercellular movement. Together, our results unveil a transport function of adherens junctions. Furthermore, this adherens junctions-based intercellular transport provides a platform for the exchange of junctional proteins and signaling receptors between neighboring cells. The effect of eye state on listeners' reaction to music has attracted some attention, but its influence on brain activity has not been fully investigated. The present study aimed to evaluate the electroencephalographic (EEG) markers for the emotional valence of music in different eye states. Thirty participants listened to musical excerpts with different emotional content in the eyes-closed and eyes-open states. The results showed that participants rated the music as more pleasant or with more positive valence under an eyes-open state. In addition, we found that the alpha asymmetry indices calculated on the parietal and temporal sites reflected emotion valence in the eyes-closed and eyes-open states, respectively. The theta power in the frontal area significantly increased while listening to emotional-positive music compared to emotional-negative music under the eyes-closed condition. These effects of eye states on EEG markers are discussed in terms of brain mechanisms underlying attention and emotion.Item type:Item, Electronic quenching of O(D-1) by Xe: Oscillations in the product angular distribution and their dependence on collision energy(2015-08-07) ;Garofalo, Lauren A. ;Smith, Mica C. ;Dagdigian, Paul J. ;Klos, JacekAlexander, Millard H.The dynamics of the O(D-1) + Xe electronic quenching reaction was investigated in a crossed beam experiment at four collision energies. Marked large-scale oscillations in the differential cross sections were observed for the inelastic scattering products, O(P-3) and Xe. The shape and relative phases of the oscillatory structure depend strongly on collision energy. Comparison of the experimental results with time-independent scattering calculations shows qualitatively that this behavior is caused by Stueckelberg interferences, for which the quantum phases of the multiple reaction pathways accessible during electronic quenching constructively and destructively interfere. The micro-prisms on the compact light guide plate guide the emitting rays to the normal viewing angle, whereas a set of striped diffusers scatter the rays to a wide viewing angle. View cones of +/- 10 degrees/+/- 55 degrees were obtained for narrow/wide viewing modes with 88%/85% uniformity of spatial luminance, respectively. Compared with the conventional backlight, the optical efficiencies were increased by factors of 1.47 and 1.38 in narrow and wide viewing modes, respectively. In addition, only 5% of power consumption was needed when the backlight worked in private narrow viewing mode to maintain the same luminance as that of a conventional backlight. The calculation of these higher integer soliton solutions is based on the recently developed multi-indexed extensions of the reflectionless soliton potential.Item type:Item, Size-dependent line broadening in the emission spectra of single GaAs quantum dots: Impact of surface charge on spectral diffusion(2015-08-10) ;Ha, Neul ;Mano, Takaaki ;Chou, Ying-Lin ;Wu, Yu-NienCheng, Shun-JenMaking use of droplet epitaxy, we systematically controlled the height of self-assembled GaAs quantum dots by more than one order of magnitude. The photoluminescence spectra of single quantum dots revealed the strong dependence of the spectral linewidth on the dot height. Tall dots with a height of similar to 30 nm showed broad spectral peaks with an average width as large as similar to 5 meV, but shallow dots with a height of similar to 2 nm showed resolution-limited spectral lines (<= 120 mu eV). The measured height dependence of the linewidths is in good agreement with Stark coefficients calculated for the experimental shape variation. We attribute the microscopic source of fluctuating electric fields to the random motion of surface charges at the vacuum-semiconductor interface. Our results offer guidelines for creating frequency-locked photon sources, which will serve as key devices for long-distance quantum key distribution.Item type:Item, Nanocontact Disorder in Nanoelectronics for Modulation of Light and Gas Sensitivities(2015-08-11) ;Lin, Yen-Fu ;Chang, Chia-Hung ;Hung, Tsu-Chang ;Jian, Wen-BinTsukagoshi, KazuhitoTo fabricate reliable nanoelectronics, whether by top-down or bottom-up processes, it is necessary to study the electrical properties of nanocontacts. The effect of nanocontact disorder on device properties has been discussed but not quantitatively studied. Here, by carefully analyzing the temperature dependence of device electrical characteristics and by inspecting them with a microscope, we investigated the Schottky contact and Mott's variable-range-hopping resistances connected in parallel in the nanocontact. To interpret these parallel resistances, we proposed a model of Ti/TiOx in the interface between the metal electrodes and nanowires. The hopping resistance as well as the nanocontact disorder dominated the total device resistance for high-resistance devices, especially at low temperatures. Furthermore, we introduced nanocontact disorder to modulate the light and gas responsivities of the device; unexpectedly, it multiplied the sensitivities compared with the intrinsic sensitivity of the nanowires. Our results improve the collective understanding of electrical contacts to low-dimensional semiconductor devices and will aid performance optimization in future nanoelectronics. Item type:Item, Reflective Displays Based on Dye-Doped Bistable Chiral-Tilted Homeotropic Nematics(2015-08-13) ;Huang, Kuan-Chung ;Lee, Yun-Han ;Lee, Wei ;影像與生醫光電研究所Institute of Imaging and Biomedical PhotonicsItem type:Item, Dielectric and Electro-Optical Properties of Polymer-Stabilized-Blue-Phase Cells(2015-08-13) ;Hsu, Hsuan-Tsung ;Wu, Po-Chang ;Lee, Wei ;光電學院影像與生醫光電研究所Item type:Item, YKL-40 regulated epithelial-mesenchymal transition and migration/invasion enhancement in non-small cell lung cancer(2015-08-15) ;Jefri, Malvin ;Huang, Yi-Ning ;Huang, Wen-Chien ;Tai, Chun-SanChen, Wen-LiangBackground: YKL-40 is a secreted inflammatory protein that its overexpression has been reported to correlate with poor outcome of various malignant diseases, especially in cancer. However, the function of this protein is still unclear. Methods: The clinical prognosis of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) patients and their clinical YKL-40 expressions were obtained from the Prognoscan database. The expressions of YKL-40 in patient samples were determined by Western Blotting assay. YKL-40 gene knockdown and overexpression were performed on NSCLC cancer cells (CL1-1 and CL1-5). The cells were investigated for their epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers gene modulation through Western Blotting and RT-PCR. Further cell metastatic abilities were assessed by transwell migration and invasion assay. Result: In this study, YKL-40 was observed to be highly expressed in NSCLC specimens. Furthermore, determined by the PrognoScan database analysis, patients with high expression levels of YKL-40 were found with poor prognosis. In the in vitro study, different characteristics of NSCLC cell lines (CL1-1, H23, H838, CL1-5, and H2009) were used as study models, where YKL-40 expression levels were determined to correlate with the phenotypic characteristics of cancer metastasis. In this study, YKL-40 was demonstrated to regulate EMT marker expressions such as Twist, Snail, Slug, N-cadherin, Vimentin, and E-cadherin. The protein's affects in cancer cell migration and invasion were also observed in YKL-40 overexpression or knock down NSCLC cell lines. Conclusion: All of results from this study suggest that YKL-40 is a major factor in NSCLC metastasis. Thus, YKL-40 may serve as therapeutic target for NSCLC patients in the future.Item type:Item, Method to evaluate afterpulsing probability in single-photon avalanche diodes(2015-08-15) ;Tzou, Bo-Wei ;Wu, Jau-Yang ;Lee, Yi-Shan ;Lin, Sheng-Di電機工程學系We propose and demonstrate a new method for evaluating the afterpulsing effect in single-photon avalanche photodiodes (SPADs). By analyzing the statistical property of dark count rate, we can quantitatively characterize afterpulsing probability (APP) of a SPAD. In experiment, the temperature-dependent low dark count rate (DCR) distribution becomes non-Poissonian at lower temperature and has higher excess bias as the afterpulsing effect becomes significant. Our work provides a flexible way to examine APP in either single-device or circuit level. We show that a 1.2-mu m GaAs film on Au can completely absorb an electromagnetic wave of 7.9 THz and totally reflect the waves of frequencies not very close to 7.9 THz. The uniformity of the layered structure enables observation of a quasi-monochromatic, nearly perfect absorption of 96% in a 1.4-mu m GaAs film. The absorption can be high for a wide range of incident angles. H. ;Sung, J. Y.Liu, P. F.Square-core optical fiber has been proposed recently for high optical power delivery in industrial processing tools with core size larger than 400 x 400 mu m(2). In this work, we first study the possibility of significantly reducing the core side to single-mode condition (i.e. 9 x 9 mu m(2)) at optical communication wavelength. In the proposed square-core single-mode-fiber (SC-SMF), high bandwidth-distance product and low bending loss are achieved. We also discuss the fabrication of the SC-SMF. After this, the bending losses of the SC-SMF and standard single mode fiber (SSMF) are analyzed and compared. Finally, 10 Gb/s signal transmission using conventional on-off keying (OOK) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) passing through 200 m, 500 m and 1 km SC-SMFs are performed. Negligible power penalty is observed. We believe that this can be another choice of high bending tolerance fiber which is simple to manufacture. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
