Item type:Item, Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Are Better than Acetaminophen on Fever Control at Acute Stage of Fracture(2015-10-02) ;Yeh, Kuang-Ting ;Wu, Wen-Tien ;Subeq, Yi-Maun ;Niu, Chi-ChienLiao, Kuang-WenIn addition to adequate surgical fixation and an aggressive rehabilitation program, pain relief is one of the most critical factors in the acute stage of fracture treatment. The most common analgesics are nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs and Acetaminophen, both of which relieve pain and reduce body temperature. In clinical experiences, they exhibit effective pain control; however, their influence on body temperature remains controversial. This study is aimed at determining the effects of analgesics at the acute stage of traumatic fracture by performing a clinical retrospective study of patients with fractures and a fracture animal model. The retrospective study revealed that, in the acetaminophen group, the mean value of postmedication body temperature (BT) was significantly higher than that of the premedication BT. The change in BT was highly related with the medication rather than other risk factors. Forty eight 12-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups: a control group, fracture group, fracture-Acetaminophen group, Acetaminophen group, fracture-Arcoxia group, and Arcoxia group. Fracture rats were prepared by breaking their unilateral tibia and fibula. Their inflammation conditions were evaluated by measuring their serum cytokine level and their physiological status was evaluated by estimating their central temperature, heart rate, and mean blood pressure. The hepatic adverse effects were assessed by measuring the serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (sGOT) and alanine aminotransferase (sGPT). The central temperature in the fracture-Acetaminophen group exceeded that in the groups fed normal saline water or Arcoxia. Accumulated hepatic injury was presented as steadily ascending curves of sGOT and sGPT. Inflammation-related cytokine levels were not higher in the Acetaminophen fracture group and were significantly lower in the fracture-Arcoxia group. Fever appeared to be aggravated by acetaminophen and more related to the elevation of hepatic enzymes than to the change in the inflammation-related cytokines. We suggest that acetaminophen may aggravate fever at the acute stage of fracture. This response is highly related to the accumulated and exacerbated side effects of hepatitis that are caused by the medication and trauma.Item type:Item, An exploratory study of young students\' core virtues of e-character education: The Taiwanese teachers\' perspective(2015-10-02) ;Chang, Chih-Ming ;Chou, Chien ;教育研究所Institute of EducationThe e-character education (e-CE) approach refers to systems of ethics education that pertain specifically to cyberspace. This exploratory study used a survey to collect 2495 teachers\' responses regarding virtues important to e-CE. Furthermore, in order to identify the teaching concerns associated with these most important virtues, this study used two focus groups that involved interviews with 16 teachers and Internet experts, as well as a content analysis of 92 posts from 72 teachers in an online course regarding ethical behavior in the context of Internet activity. The results of this study show that e-CE virtues considered important by teachers include law abidance, respect, self-discipline and sharing. Teaching-related concerns of these virtues have also been discussed. The results serve as a foundation and guide for the promotion of e-CE curriculum development and implementation.Item type:Item, Narrating the pasts and selves: in dialogue with Ashis Nandy\'s "Memory Work"(2015-10-02) ;Chen, Vickie Ying-En ;社會與文化所Institute of Social Research and Culture StudiesThrough taking Ashis Nandy\'s Memory Work as the entry point to his psychological-political thoughts toward colonialization, de-colonialization and the empathetic critique of ultra-nationalism in India/South Asia, this paper aims to emphasize Nandy\'s essential argument to see how ideologies of modern colonialism work on molding the narrative of pasts and vivisecting the multiplicity of subjecthood - which Nandy termed as multiple selves. In this regard, this paper considers Memory Work as a revitalization of the perspective to look into how the selves and the narrative of pasts inter-configure each other under colonialism and nationalism. The paper also further looks for alternative accountability of pasts and selves within communities and their cultural traditions.Item type:Item, A Green Time-Bounded Routing on Solar-Based Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks(2015-10-02) ;Chen, Yuh-Shyan ;Lin, Yun-Wei ;Wang, Chih-Hao ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceA solar-based vehicular ad-hoc networking technique is a key issue to exploit the on-board sensing, computing, energy harvesting, and wireless communication capabilities in the intelligent transportation system. Most existing research results mostly paid attention to the energy savings, but lacking in consideration of the energy harvesting. An electric solar vehicle considered in this paper is equipped with a solar panel so that the vehicle battery can be periodically charged while keeping the high ECR, where ECR (energy consumption ratio) is the average packet arrival ratio divided by the energy consumption. This paper proposes a new green time-bounded routing protocol, whose goal is to deliver messages to the destination within user-defined delay and to minimize the usage of radio and power consumption, because the radio spectrum and the power are the limited resources. Simulation results justify the efficiency of the proposed protocol.Item type:Item, Numerical radii for tensor products of matrices(2015-10-03) ;Gau, Hwa-Long ;Wang, Kuo-Zhong ;Wu, Pei Yuan ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsFor n-by-n and m-by-m complex matrices A and B, it is known that the inequality w(A circle times B) = parallel to A parallel to w(B) holds, where w(center dot) and parallel to center dot parallel to denote, respectively, the numerical radius and the operator norm of a matrix. In this paper, we consider when this becomes an equality. We show that (1) if parallel to A parallel to = 1 and w(A circle times B) = w(B), then one of the following two conditions holds: (i) A has a unitary part, and (ii) A is completely nonunitary and the numerical range W(B) of B is a circular disc centered at the origin, (2) if parallel to A parallel to = parallel to A(k)parallel to = 1 for some k, 1 <= k < infinity, then w(A) >= cos(pi/(k + 2)), and, moreover, the equality holds if and only if A is unitarily similar to the direct sum of the (k + 1)-by-(k + 1) Jordan block J(k+1) and a matrix B with w(B) <= cos(pi/(k + 2)), and (3) if B is a nonnegative matrix with its real part (permutationally) irreducible, then w(A circle times B) = parallel to A parallel to w(B), if and only if either p (A) = infinity or n (B) = p (A) < infinity and B is permutationally similar to a block-shift matrix [GRAPHICS] with k = n (B), where p (A) = sup{l >= 1 : parallel to A(l)parallel to = parallel to A parallel to(l)} and n (B) = sup{l >= 1 : B-l not equal 0}.Item type:Item, Getting Grandma Online: Are Tablets the Answer for Increasing Digital Inclusion for Older Adults in the US?(2015-10-03) ;Tsai, Hsin-yi Sandy ;Shillair, Ruth ;Cotten, Shelia R. ;Winstead, VickiYost, ElizabethUsing information and communication technologies (ICTs) can improve older adults\' quality of life. ICT use is associated with decreased feelings of loneliness and depression, along with increased feelings of independence and personal growth. However, limited access and low technological self-efficacy are key reasons why some groups, especially older adults, are excluded from being fully engaged in the digital world. In this study, we focus on older adults\' technological self-efficacy, which is related to their actual use of technology and the second level digital divide. Specifically, we examine: (a) how older adults decide to use a new technology, tablet computers; (b) how they conquer the barrier of technological self-efficacy through using tablets; and (c) the impacts of using this new technology in their lives. Twenty-one in-depth interviews were conducted with older adults residing in independent living communities in a medium-sized city in the Deep South region of the United States. Observational and enactive learning played important roles for older adults in using tablets. Seeing others use tablets, getting recommendations from family members, or having tablets given to them were the primary reasons they started to use tablet computers. The ease of use feature of tablets helped solve the problem of lacking technological self-efficacy. Using tablets helped increase a sense of connectedness. Tablet computers may be one way to increase digital inclusion among older adults.
