Item type:Item, A first near real-time seismology-based landquake monitoring system(2017-03-02) ;Chao, Wei-An ;Wu, Yih-Min ;Zhao, Li ;Chen, HongeyChen, Yue-GauHazards from gravity-driven instabilities on hillslope (termed 'landquake' in this study) are an important problem facing us today. Rapid detection of landquake events is crucial for hazard mitigation and emergency response. Based on the real-time broadband data in Taiwan, we have developed a near real-time landquake monitoring system, which is a fully automatic process based on waveform inversion that yields source information (e. g., location and mechanism) and identifies the landquake source by examining waveform fitness for different types of source mechanisms. This system has been successfully tested offline using seismic records during the passage of the 2009 Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan and has been in online operation during the typhoon season in 2015. In practice, certain levels of station coverage (station gap < 180 degrees), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR >= 5.0), and a threshold of event size (volume > 10(6) m(3) and area > 0.20 km(2)) are required to ensure good performance (fitness > 0.6 for successful source identification) of the system, which can be readily implemented in other places in the world with real-time seismic networks and high landquake activities.Item type:Item, Dispersive Element and Spectrometer Using the Same(2017-03-02) ;Cheng-Sheng HUANGHsin-An LINA dispersive element is incorporated with an optical sensor as a spectrometer. The dispersive element includes a guided-mode resonance filter having a plurality of resonance regions. The resonance regions respectively have different filter characteristics, each reflecting a first light beam of a tested light source or transmitting a second light beam of the tested light source light source to the optical sensor, wherein the wavelength of the first light beam is different from that of the second light beam. In one embodiment, the dispersive element is incorporated with an optical sensor to form a miniature, high-resolution and low-cost spectrometer. The spectrometer makes use of the transmission efficiencies of the resonance regions of the guided-mode resonance filter and the light intensity distribution detected by the photosensitive regions of the optical sensor to acquire the spectral data of the tested light source.Item type:Item, COMPOSITE WATER PURIFICATION APPARATUS AND METHOD THEREOF(2017-03-02) ;Chih-Pin Huang ;Chien-Hung Chen ;Hsin-Ju Yang ;Chi-Chang HuWei-Chieh LinA composite water purification apparatus and method thereof are provided. Through the thinned wall, the effective bandgaps of nano-ring LEDs can be precisely tuned by reducing the strain inside the active region. Photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL measurements indicated the lattice-mismatch induced strain inside the active region was relaxed when the wall width is reduced. Through the simulation, we can understand the strain distribution of active region inside NRLEDs. The simulation results not only revealed the exact distribution of strain but also predicted the trend of wavelength-shifted behavior of NRLEDs. Finally, the NRLEDs devices with four-color emission on the same wafer were demonstrated.Item type:Item, Effect of tungsten incorporation in cobalt tungsten alloys as seedless diffusion barrier materials(2017-03-05) ;Su, Yin-Hsien ;Kuo, Tai-Chen ;Lee, Wen-Hsi ;Wang, Yu-ShengHung, Chi-ChengWith the increase in the aspect ratio of the interconnect features in integrated circuits, the direct electroplating of Cu on diffusion barrier without sputtered Cu seed layers is attracting more and more attention. In this study, direct electroplating of Cu onto sputtered CoW films with various W concentration in acidic CuSO4 solution is investigated. Also, the adhesion and anti-diffusion properties of the CoW thin films for Cu are explored. The results show that Cu films cannot be electrodeposited on thin Co layers due to corrosion of Co in the acidic bath. For CoW alloys, higher W concentration is found to be beneficial for suppressing corrosion of CoW films and also improving the thermal stability. However, on the surface of Cu/CoW films with high W concentration, Cu agglomeration and pin-holes were found after annealing, indicating poor adhesion between Cu and high W-content CoW alloys. In this study, CoW alloys with moderate W concentration around 50% are found to be a direct platable material which also demonstrates desirable adhesion and anti-diffusion characteristics for Cu interconnects application. By introducing the free cooling technologies, the compressor loading of refrigeration systern, can be partially or completely relieved. Utilization of airside or waterside free cooling relies strongly on the ambient conditions, yet either airside free cooling or waterside free cooling may be integrated with other systems such as absorption, solar system, adsorption, geothermal, evaporative cooling, and the like to extend its performance. On the other hand, thermosiphon heat exchangers and pulsating heat pipes feature unique characteristics to transfer heat at small temperature difference are quite promising for datacenter free cooling. The far-field transmission spectra of the complementary screens are considerably different from each other. On the other hand, genuine near-field extinction spectra exhibit nearly complementary characteristics. The spatial features of the observed near-field images for the complementary screens show little correlation. We have found from the Fourier analysis of the simulated images that high spatial-frequency components of the electromagnetic fields show mutual spatial correlation. These results suggest that Babinet's principle is applicable to the high spatial-frequency components of electromagnetic fields for the complementary screens. Experiment results for SNR, BER, and data rate (based on a bit-loading algorithm) revealed that the performance of frequency-domain SSII cancellation is unaffected by power fading; however, it depends heavily on the precision of the mathematical model. Conversely, although time-domain Volterra filtering is affected by the faded waveform, adaptive-weighting provides flexibility in dealing with mixed nonlinear distortion, particularly that associated with the interplay between fiber dispersion and fiber nonlinearity. 4-channel WDM-OFDM and 3rd-order Volterra filtering were used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme in a 200-Gbps IMDD system. Based on 10-GHz EAM and PIN, we achieved 200-Gbps transmission over a distance of 60 km with a loss budget of > 30 dB, while providing support for 128 ONUs at >1.6 Gbps/ONU without the need for an inline amplifier or pre-amplifier. Through the measurement on how long individual particles are trapped at the focus, we here show that immobilization time of dye-doped particles becomes longer than that of bare ones. We directly confirm that the immobilization time of dye-doped particles trapped by the blue-detuned laser becomes longer than that by the red-detuned one. These findings are well interpreted by our previous theoretical proposal based on nonlinear optical response under intense laser field. It is discussed that the present result is an important step toward efficient and selective manipulation of molecules, quantum dots, nanoparticles, and various nanomaterials based on their quantum mechanical properties. TFT devices with two different source and drain layouts were exanimated: one having a parallel format electrode and the other with UI format electrode. UI means that source/drain electrodes shapes is defined as a forked-shaped structure. The I-V curve of the parallel electrode exhibited a symmetric degradation under forward and reverse sweeping in the saturation region after 1000 s NBIS. In contrast, the I-V curve of the UI electrode structure under similar conditions was asymmetric. The UI electrode structure also shows a stretch-out phenomenon in its C-V measurement. Finally, this work utilizes the ISE-Technology Computer Aided Design (ISE-TCAD) system simulations, which simulate the electron field and IV curves, to analyze the mechanisms dominating the parallel and UI device degradation behaviors. The mechanisms through which infiltrating lymphocytes cause disease remain unknown. Using a mouse model of AH we assessed whether T lymphocytes undergo activation in the pituitary gland. Infiltrating T cells co-localized with dendritic cells in the pituitary and produced increased levels of interferon-gamma and interleukin-17 upon stimulation in vitro. Assessing proliferation of CD3- and B220-postive lymphocytes by double immunohistochemistry (PCNA-staining) and flow cytometry (BrdU incorporation) revealed that a discrete proportion of infiltrating T cells and B cells underwent proliferation within the pituitary parenchyma. This proliferation persisted into the late disease stage (day 56 post-immunization), indicating the presence of a continuous generation of autoreactive T and B cells within the pituitary gland. T cell proliferation in the pituitary was confirmed in patients affected by autoimmune hypophysitis. In conclusion, we show that pituitary-infiltrating lymphocytes proliferate in situ during AH, providing a previously unknown pathogenic mechanism and new avenues for treatment.Item type:Item, Estimating Percent Crystallinity of Polyethylene as a Function of Temperature by Raman Spectroscopy Multivariate Curve Resolution by Alternating Least Squares(2017-03-07) ;Samuel, Ashok Zachariah ;Lai, Bo-Han ;Lan, Shih-Ting ;Ando, MasahiroWang, Chien-LungWe have recently demonstrated a methodology to estimate the percent crystallinity (PC) of polymers directly with Raman spectroscopy and multivariate curve resolution (MCR) by alternating least-squares (ALS). In the MCR-ALS methodology, the Raman spectrum of a semicrystalline polymer is separated into two constituent components (crystalline and molten/amorphous) and their corresponding concentrations. The methodology necessitates that the Raman spectrum at any temperature be a linear combination of two MCR spectral components (one molten and one crystalline). This is true in the case of simple systems such as crystalline pendant alkyl domains in polymers (Samuel et al. Anal. Chem. 2016, 88, 4644). However, in the case of main chain polymer crystals (e.g., polyethylene), the situation can be complicated owing to several molecular changes in the lattice in addition to conformational reorganizations during melting. Under this circumstance, a simple two-state model may not be adequate and we describe the modifications required to treat such systems, keeping the basic principles of the proposed methodology unchanged. A comparative study with wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and Raman spectroscopy is also performed to substantiate our findings. In addition to estimating percent crystallinity (PC), our methodology is capable of revealing additional information, such as interchain interactions in crystal lattice, that in principle will help distinguishing polymorphic transformations, subtle changes in lamellar lattice dimensions, and other phase changes in polymers.Item type:Item, Probing Skin for Metabolites and Topical Drugs with Hydrogel Micropatches(2017-03-07) ;Dutkiewicz, Ewelina P. ;Chiu, Hsien-Yi ;Urban, Pawel L. ;應用化學系應用化學系分子科學碩博班Sampling the skin surface is a convenient way to obtain biological specimens bearing clinically relevant information. The unusual mesopore embedded BST films exhibit the highest power factor of similar to 33 mu W cm(-1) K-2, which is comparable to or higher than the previously reported values for BST, and the corresponding relatively low thermal diffusivity in contrast to that for dense pore-less BST films evidently reveals the crucial role of the three-dimensionally and densely arranged air-solid interfaces in significantly arising the phonon scattering.Item type:Item, Luminance enhancement in quantum dot light-emitting diodes fabricated with Field's metal as the cathode(2017-03-08) ;Basilio, Carlos ;Oliva, Jorge ;Lopez-Luke, Tzarara ;Pu, Ying-ChihZhang, Jin Z.This work reports the fabrication and characterization of blue-green quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) by using core/shell/shell Cd1-xZnxSe/ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots. Poly [(9,9-bis(3'-(N, N-dimethylamino) propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (PFN) was introduced in order to enhance the electron injection and also acted as a protecting layer during the deposition of the cathode (a Field's metal sheet) on the organic/inorganic active layers at low temperature (63 degrees C). This procedure permitted us to eliminate the process of thermal evaporation for the deposition of metallic cathodes, which is typically used in the fabrication of OLEDs. The performance of devices made with an aluminum cathode was compared with that of devices which employed Field's metal (FM) as the cathode. We found that the luminance and efficiency of devices with FM was similar to 70% higher with respect to those that employed aluminum as the cathode and their consumption of current was similar up to 13 V. We also demonstrated that the simultaneous presence of 1,2-ethanedethiol (EDT) and PFN enhanced the luminance in our devices and improved the current injection in QD-LEDs. Hence, the architecture for QD-LEDs presented in this work could be useful for the fabrication of low-cost luminescent devices.Item type:Item, USE OF KNOWN COMPOUNDS AS D-AMINO ACID OXIDASE INHIBITORS(2017-03-08) ;TSENG, Yufeng, Jane ;LIU, Yu-Li ;SUN, Chung-Ming ;HWU, Hai-GwoLIU, Chih-Min
