By reshaping the orthogonal frequency multiplexed (16-QAM OFDM) stream with sidelobe filtering, the raw data rate expedites from 17.2 to 18.4 Gbps. Employing an ultrafast p-i-n photodiode with smaller active area diameter and lower noise equivalent power significantly enlarges the data rate by 1.6 Gbps or upgrades the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 0.2 dB. Replacing the 80-mW BLD with the 120-mW one essentially increases the received SNR by 0.4 dB under enhanced modulation throughput. Reinforcing the beam collimation and collection by increasing the numerical aperture with a plano-convex hyper-hemispherical lens further improves the SNR by 0.6 dB. After optimization, the 16-QAM OFDM data with and without sidelobe filtering are respectively delivered at raw data rates of 16.4 and 18 Gbps with spectral-density usage efficiency as high as 4 bit/s/Hz over 16 m in free space, wherein the BLD carried QAM-OFDM data stream remains its capacity after reformation with sidelobe filtering as the superior inter-carrier-interference immunity reinforces.Item type:Item, Periostin promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition via the MAPK/miR-381 axis in lung cancer(2017-09-05) ;Hu, Wei-Wei ;Chen, Po-Chun ;Chen, Jun-Ming ;Wu, Yue-MingLiu, Po-YiPeriostin (POSTN, PN, or osteoblast-specific factor OSF-2) is a multifunctional cytokine that signals between the cell and the extracellular matrix. Periostin plays an important role in tumor development and is involved in carcinoma cell epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), whereby mature epithelial cells undergo phenotypic morphological changes and become invasive, motile cells. Here, we discuss the molecular mechanisms involved in periostin-induced promotion of EMT in lung cancer cells. Online TCGA datasets demonstrate the prognostic relevance of periostin in lung cancer; a higher periostin level correlates with poor overall survival. Similarly, our IHC results show that high periostin expression is positively correlated with the EMT markers Snail and Twist, as well as stage of lung cancer. We found that recombinant periostin induces the EMT phenotype in lung cancer cells through the p38/ERK pathway, while pretreatment with chemical inhibitors prevented periostin-induced EMT induction. Moreover, we found that periostin regulates EMT by repressing microRNA-381 (miR-381) expression, which targets both Snail and Twist. Using the miR-381 mimic, we dramatically reversed periostin-induced Snail and Twist expression. Furthermore, periostin knockdown dramatically affected EMT markers and cell migration potential. The role of periostin in lung cancer progression is elucidated by the in vivo mouse model. Our findings indicate that changes in periostin expression in lung cancer may serve as a therapeutic target for the treatment of lung cancer metastasis.Item type:Item, Violet Laser Diode Enables Lighting Communication(2017-09-05) ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Huang, Yu-Fang ;Wu, Tsai-Chen ;Tsai, Cheng-TingChen, Li-YinViolet laser diode (VLD) based white-light source with high color rendering index (CRI) for lighting communication is implemented by covering with Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce) or Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+/CaAlSiN3: Eu2+ (LuAG: Ce/CASN: Eu) phosphorous diffuser plates. After passing the beam of VLD biased at 70 mA (similar to 2I(th)) through the YAG: Ce phosphorous diffuser, a daylight with a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5068 K and a CRI of 65 is acquired to provide a forward error correction (FEC) certified data rate of 4.4 Gbit/s. By using the VLD biased at 122 mA (similar to 3.5I(th)) to excite the LuAG: Ce/CASN: Eu phosphorous diffuser with 0.85-mm thickness, a warm white-light source with a CCT of 2700 K and a CRI of 87.9 is obtained at a cost of decreasing transmission capacity to 2.4 Gbit/s. Thinning the phosphor thickness to 0.75 mm effectively reduces the required bias current by 32 mA to achieve the same CCT for the delivered white light, which offers an enlarged CRI of 89.1 and an increased data rate of 4.4 Gbit/s. Further enlarging the bias current to 105 mA remains the white-light transmission capacity at 4.4 Gbit/s but reveals an increased CCT of 3023 K and an upgraded CRI of 91.5.Item type:Item, Considerable humidity response of a well-aligned SOMS micro-wire flexible sensor by moisture-induced releasing of trapped electrons(2017-09-07) ;Chan, Kuei-Lin ;Yang, Min-Han ;Chiu, Hsin-Tien ;Lee, Chi-Young應用化學系Sandia Octahedral Molecular Sieves micro-wires (SOMS MWs) that exhibit ultra-high response to moisture and a short response time can be produced easily in an environmentally friendly mass production process. They are excellent candidate materials for use in humidity sensors. SOMS MWs were synthesized using niobium pentoxide as a precursor in concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. To fabricate humidity-sensing devices, electrophoresis was utilized to align the SOMS MWs on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The degree of alignment of SOMS MWs can be tuned by controlling the electric field during electrophoresis. Both well-aligned SOMS MWs (S-1.00) and randomly distributed SOMS MWs (S-0.00) exhibit maximum sensitivities to humidity (RRH/RDRY) of almost 10(4) and 10(7) respectively, and both exhibit short response times (34 and 38 s) and recovery times (7 and 10 s); these MWs outperform metal oxide ceramic-based materials in sensing humidity. Furthermore, the humidity response of S-1.00 exceeds that of S-0.00 by three orders of magnitude, and this result cannot be explained with reference to the Grotthuss mechanism. Therefore, the moisture-induced carriers from trapped electrons contribute significantly to the humidity response of SOMS MWs. In addition, with outstanding humidity sensing-performance under extreme bending conditions and superior durability after being bent hundreds of times, the well-aligned SOMS MW sensor is a favorable candidate for emerging multifunctional electronic-skin.Item type:Item, In situ evolution of highly dispersed amorphous CoOx clusters for oxygen evolution reaction(2017-09-07) ;Chen, Dawei ;Dong, Chung-Li ;Zou, Yuqin ;Su, DongHuang, Yu-ChengElectrocatalytic water splitting is a key technique to produce hydrogen fuels, which can be considered as an efficient strategy to store renewable energy. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that occurs at the anode side requires a four-electron transfer under highly oxidizing conditions. OER has a large overpotential and therefore determines the overall efficiency. Certain electrocatalysts can efficiently help to improve the reaction kinetics. Owing to the high cost of precious metals such as Pt, Ru, and Ir, non-precious metal oxide catalysts have been vigorously investigated under alkaline conditions. Herein, we synthesized novel highly dispersed amorphous CoOx for the first time in the form of a cluster favorable to enhance the OER activity using a facile method via the air dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. Compared with the pristine biopolymer-cobalt complex, the amorphous CoOx cluster exhibits a much higher current density and a lower overpotential for OER, e.g., the overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and the overpotential of only 350 mV at 300 mA cm(-1). The excellent electrocatalytic OER activity was attributed to the unsaturated catalytic sites on the amorphous CoOx cluster. In addition, we studied the reaction mechanism, and it was observed that pure O-2 DBD plasma could lead to the evolution of crystalline CoOx; however, the presence of N-2 and O-2 in DBD plasma could ensure the facile evolution of amorphous CoOx clusters. This study provides a new strategy to design amorphous materials for electrocatalysis and beyond.Item type:Item, IMPEDANCE-TO-DIGITAL CONVERTER, IMPEDANCE-TO-DIGITAL CONVERTING DEVICE, AND METHOD FOR ADJUSTMENT OF IMPEDANCE-TO-DIGITAL CONVERTING DEVICE(2017-09-07) ;Jin-Chern CHIOUShun-Hsi HSUAn impedance-to-digital converter is provided. However, limited reports are available on systematic optimization of carbonization degree. In this investigation, pyrolysis temperatures between 160 degrees C and 220 degrees C were studied, based on CA thermal decomposition path, using various heating durations. The effect of the formation of more carbonized carbon particles (MCCPs), as the major byproduct of this method, on photoluminescence properties of CDs was also considered. The NaOH amount that neutralizes the solution and the effect of dilution on the emission intensity, were introduced as simple and accessible factors for monitoring carbonization degree, and an estimate of MCCP/ CD ratio, respectively. The results show that the CDs fabricated at 160 degrees C, 50 minutes attain almost twice higher quantum yield (QY) of 29% than highest QY reported based on pyrolysis of CA. The so-prepared CDs can be employed as excellent candidates for turn-off sensing. As a proof of concept, detection limit of 50 nM for Hg2+ was achieved using a facile and inexpensive smartphone set-up that is able to quantify and compare fluorescent intensity in several samples simultaneously.Item type:Item, Large-Area 2D Layered MoTe2 by Physical Vapor Deposition and Solid-Phase Crystallization in a Tellurium-Free Atmosphere(2017-09-08) ;Huang, Jyun-Hong ;Deng, Kuang-Ying ;Liu, Pang-Shiuan ;Wu, Chien-TingChou, Cheng-TungMolybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) has attracted considerable interest for nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, spintronic, and valleytronic applications because of its modest band gap, high field-effect mobility, large spin-orbit-coupling splitting, and tunable 1T/2H phases. However, synthesizing large-area, high-quality MoTe2 remains challenging. The complicated design of gas-phase reactant transport and reaction for chemical vapor deposition or tellurization is nontrivial because of the weak bonding energy between Mo and Te. This study reports a new method for depositing MoTe2 that entails using physical vapor deposition followed by a postannealing process in a Te-free atmosphere. Both Mo and Te are physically deposited onto the substrate by sputtering a MoTe2 target. A composite SiO2 capping layer is designed to prevent Te sublimation during the postannealing process. The postannealing process facilitates 1T-to-2H phase transition and solid-phase crystallization, leading to the formation of high-crystallinity few-layer 2H-MoTe2 with a field-effect mobility of approximate to 10 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), the highest among all nonexfoliated 2H-MoTe2 currently reported. Furthermore, 2H-MoS2 and Td-WTe2 can be deposited using similar methods. Requiring no transfer or chemical reaction of metal and chalcogen reactants in the gas phase, the proposed method is potentially a general yet simple approach for depositing a wide variety of large-area, high-quality, 2D layered structures.Item type:Item, Effect of barrier layer on switching polarity of ZrO2-based conducting-bridge random access memory(2017-09-11) ;Chandrasekaran, Sridhar ;Simanjuntak, Firman Mangasa ;Tsai, Tsung-Ling ;Lin, Chun-AnTseng, Tseung-YuenIn this study, metal diffusion barrier-dependent switching polarity in ZrO2-based conducting-bridge random access memory was investigated. The device without the barrier layer (BL) exhibited nonpolar switching characteristics. However, inserting TiW BL resulted in positive reset failure. This phenomenon depends on the size and shape of the conducting bridge and also on the defects that contribute to the formation and rupture of the bridge. Consequently, the properties of the conducting bridge govern the device switching performance. Cu- and oxygen vacancy-based conducting bridge during N-Set for a device with and without the BL was proposed. The effect of the insertion of BL on the switching performance was also discussed. The absence of BL resulted in switching instability and poor nonvolatility. By contrast, a device with BL exhibited enhanced uniformity and nonvolatility, and the retention was more than 10(5) s at 200 degrees C. Interestingly, the mechanistic aspects behind that self-assembly directed G-DNWs formation was discussed in details. Notably, above self-assembly was validated by AFM and TEM data. Further interrogations by XRD and Raman data were revealed the possible graphite sheath wrapping over DNWs. Moreover, the HR-TEM studies also verified the coexistence of less perfect sp(2) graphite layer wrapped over the sp3 diamond carbon and the impurity channels as well. Very importantly, conductivity of hybrid G-DNWs was verified via fabrication of a single G-DNW. Wherein, the better conductivity of G-DNW portion L2 was found as 2.4 +/- 1.92 x 10(-6) mS/cm and revealed its effective applicability in near future. In addition to note, temperature dependent carrier transport mechanisms and activation energy calculations were reported in details in this work. Ultimately, to demonstrate the importance of our conductivity measurements, the possible mechanism behind the electrical transport and the comparative account on electrical resistivities of carbon based materials were provided.Item type:Item, Significant color space blue-shift of green OLED emitter with sustaining lifetime and substantial efficiency enhancement (vol 111, 093301, 2017)(2017-09-11) ;Li, Jung-Yu ;Chen, Shih-Pu ;Siao, Huei-Jhen ;Wu, Jin-HanChen, Guan-YuItem type:Item, Approaching confinement structure for light quarks in a holographic soft wall QCD model(2017-09-12) ;Li, Meng-Wei ;Yang, Yi ;Yuan, Pei-Hung ;電子物理學系物理研究所We study the confinement-deconfinement phase transition in a holographic soft-wall QCD model. By solving the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar system analytically, we obtain the phase structure of the black hole backgrounds. We then impose probe open strings in such a background to investigate the confinement-deconfinement phase transition from different open string configurations under various temperatures and chemical potentials. Furthermore, we study the Wilson loop by calculating the minimal surface of the probing open string world sheet and obtain the Cornell potential in the confinement phase analytically.Item type:Item, Characterization of a heat-tolerant Chlorella sp GD mutant with enhanced photosynthetic CO2 fixation efficiency and its implication as lactic acid(2017-09-12) ;Lee, Tse-Min ;Tseng, Yu-Fei ;Cheng, Chieh-Lun ;Chen, Yi-ChuanLin, Chih-ShengBackground: Fermentative production of lactic acid from algae-based carbohydrates devoid of lignin has attracted great attention for its potential as a suitable alternative substrate compared to lignocellulosic biomass. Results: A Chlorella sp. GD mutant with enhanced thermo-tolerance was obtained by mutagenesis using N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine to overcome outdoor high-temperature inhibition and it was used as a feedstock for fermentative lactic acid production. The indoor experiments showed that biomass, reducing sugar content, photosynthetic O-2 evolution rate, photosystem II activity (F-v/F-m and F-v'/F-m'), and chlorophyll content increased as temperature, light intensity, and CO2 concentration increased. The mutant showed similar DIC affinity and initial slope of photosynthetic light response curve (a) as that of the wild type but had higher dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) utilization capacity and maximum photosynthesis rate (P-max). Moreover, the PSII activity (F-v'/F-m') in the mutant remained normal without acclimation process after being transferred to photobioreactor. This suggests that efficient utilization of incident high light and enhanced carbon fixation with its subsequent flux to carbohydrates accumulation in the mutant contributes to higher sugar and biomass productivity under enriched CO2 condition. The mutant was cultured outdoors in a photobioreactor with 6% CO2 aeration in hot summer season in southern Taiwan. The harvested biomass was subjected to separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) for lactic acid production with carbohydrate concentration equivalent to 20 g/L glucose using the lactic acid-producing bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum 23. The conversion rate and yield of lactic acid were 80% and 0.43 g/g Chlorella biomass, respectively. Conclusions: These results demonstrated that the thermo-tolerant Chlorella mutant with high photosynthetic efficiency and biomass productivity under hot outdoor condition is an efficient fermentative feedstock for large-scale lactic acid production.Item type:Item, Carbodicarbenes: Unexpected pi-Accepting Ability during Reactivity with Small Molecules(2017-09-13) ;Chen, Wen-Ching ;Shih, Wei-Chih ;Jurca, Titel ;Zhao, LiliAndrada, Diego M.An investigation of carbodicarbenes, the less explored member of the carbenic complex/ligand family has yielded unexpected electronic features and concomitant reactivity. Observed 1,2-addition of E-H bonds (E = B, C, Si) across the carbone central carbon and that of the flanking N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) fragment, combined with single-crystal X-ray studies of a model Pd complex strongly suggests a significant level of pi-accepting ability at the central carbon of the NHC moiety. This feature is atypical of classic NHCs, which are strong sigma-donors, with only nominal pi-accepting ability. The unanticipated pi-acidity is critical for engendering carbodicarbenes with reactivity more commonly observed with frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) rather than the more closely related NHCs and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs).Item type:Item, Directional Solution Coating by the Chinese Brush: A Facile Approach to Improving Molecular Alignment for High-Performance Polymer TFTs(2017-09-13) ;Lin, Fang-Ju ;Guo, Cheng ;Chuang, Wei-Tsung ;Wang, Chien-LungWang, QianbinDirectional solution coating by the Chinese brush provides a facile approach to fabricate highly oriented polymer thin films by finely controlling the wetting and dewetting processes under directional stress. The biggest advantage of the Chinese brush over the normal western brush is the freshly emergent hairs used, whose unique tapered structure renders a dynamic balance of the liquid within the brush by multiple forces when interacting with the liquid. Consequently, the liquid is steadily held within the brush without any unexpected leakage, making the liquid transfer proceed in a well-controllable manner. It is demonstrated that the Chinese brush coating enables the crystallization of the polymer and the self-assembly of conjugated backbones to proceed in a quasi-steady state via a certain direction, which is attributed to the controllable receding of the three-phase contact line during the dewetting process by the multiple parallel freshly emergent hairs. The as-prepared polymer thin films exhibit over six times higher charge-carrier mobility compared to the spin-coated films, which therefore provides a general approach for high-performance organic thin-film transistors.Item type:Item, Energy transfer within small molecule/conjugated polymer blends enhances photovoltaic efficiency(2017-09-14) ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Su, Yu-Wei ;Li, Jia-Xing ;Lin, Bo-HsienChen, Chung-HaoIn this study, we employed ternary blends capable of energy transfer-a synthesized high-band-gap small molecule (SM-4OMe) comprising benzodithiophene (BDT) and rhodanine units (a molecular structure that was designed for energy transfer), a low-band-gap polymer (PTB7-TH) comprising BDT and thienothiophene units with desired packing orientation, and a fullerene-as active layers for singlejunction photovoltaic devices. The light absorption of the small molecule and the polymer was partially complementary, owing to their band gap difference, thereby broadening the absorption spectrum of solar light while maintaining the energy band structures that facilitated energy and charge transfer. The synthesized small molecule SM-4OMe and the PTB7-TH had somewhat similar chemical structureswith the same planar BDT donor units-and thus allowed sufficient mixing between them for energy transfer to take place. The power conversion efficiency of a device incorporating a ternary blend of PTB7-TH:SM-4OMe:PC71BM (0.9 :0.1 :1.5, w/w/w) as the active layer, processed with diiodooctane (2 vol%) in chlorobenzene, was 10.4%, which is higher than the value of 8% of the corresponding device incorporating PTB7-TH:PC71BM (1 :1.5, w/w)-an increase of 30%. We attribute this enhancement to the energy transfer from the high-band-gap small molecule SM-4OMe to the low-band-gap polymer PTB7-TH and to the optimal phase-separated bulk heterojunction morphology that comprises a mean PC71BM cluster size of 6 nm, which is lower than 12 nm for the PTB7-TH and PC71BM binary blends, and slightly better in-plane packing, arising from the inducements of the presence of SM-4OMe. This approach provides a facile and effective way to enhance the power conversion efficiency of single junction organic photovoltaics.Item type:Item, Theoretical study of the substituent effect controlling the radiative and non-radiative decay processes of platinum(II) complexes(2017-09-14) ;Shen, Wei ;Zhang, Wenting ;Zhu, Chaoyuan ;應用化學系應用化學系分子科學碩博班Six platinum complexes bearing different electron-withdrawing groups (-CN, -NO2, -o-carborane, -SF5 and -CF2CF2CF3) have been designed to explore the electron-withdrawing capability and the conjugative effect of the substituents, and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations have been performed to determine their electronic structures and phosphorescent properties. Three factors, including the oscillator strength mu(S-n) for S-0-S-n excitations, the energy gap between the triplet and singlet states DE(Sn-T1) and the spin-orbital coupling < T-1|(H) over cap (SOC)| S-n >, have been calculated to analyze the radiative processes. In addition, temperature-independent, temperature-dependent and triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) have been analyzed to determine the non-radiative decay processes. Introducing strong electron-withdrawing groups into phosphorescent transition-metal complexes has a significant impact on the phosphorescent properties and some regularity besides the inductive effect (the electron-withdrawing capability) and the conjugative effect of the substituents. The stronger electron-withdrawing capability and smaller conjugative effect can give rise to blue-shifted emission behavior and give larger radiative decay rate constants. The results demonstrate that complex 4 (-NO2 substituted) and complex 2 (-o-carborane) are possible candidates for blue-emitting materials.Item type:Item, Threading dislocation reduction in three-dimensionally grown GaN islands on Si (111) substrate with AlN/AlGaN buffer layers(2017-09-14) ;Chang, Shane ;Wei, Lin Lung ;Luong, Tien Tung ;Chang, ChingChang, LiThree-dimensional GaN island growth without any masks was first introduced under high pressure in metalorganic chemical vapor deposition after the growth of AlN and AlGaN buffer layers on Si ( 111) substrate, followed by two-dimensional GaN growth to form a continuous GaN film with improvement of the crystalline quality and surface smoothness. X-ray diffraction and cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy analyses show that a high-quality GaN film can be achieved by bending of edge threading dislocations (TDs) and the formation of dislocation half-loops. It is observed that most of edge TDs bend 90 degrees from the growth direction along c-axis, whereas mixed TDs bend about 30 degrees towards the inclined sidewall facets of the islands. Consequently, a 1.2 mu m thick GaN epitaxial film with a low threading dislocation density of 2.5 x 10 8 cm(-2) and a smooth surface of 0. 38 nm roughness can be achieved on Si substrate. To improve the targeting selectivity to the region of disease sites, we developed protease-activated pro-antibodies by masking the binding sites of antibodies with inhibitory domains that can be removed by proteases that are highly expressed at the disease sites. The latency-associated peptide (LAP), C2b or CBa of complement factor 2/B were linked, through a substrate peptide of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), to an anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) antibody and an anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) antibody. Results showed that all the inhibitory domains could be removed by MMP-2 to restore the binding activities of the antibodies. LAP substantially reduced (53.8%) the binding activity of the anti-EGFR antibody on EGFR-expressing cells, whereas C2b and CBa were ineffective (21% and 9.3% reduction, respectively). Similarly, LAP also blocked 53.9% of the binding activity of the anti-TNF-alpha antibody. Finally, molecular dynamic simulation showed that the masking efficiency of LAP, C2b and CBa was 33.7%, 10.3% and -5.4%, respectively, over the binding sites of the antibodies. This strategy may aid in designing new protease-activated pro-antibodies that attain high therapeutic potency yet reduced systemic on-target toxicity.
